California Rejects Obama's Magical "Fix" for Cancelled Policies. 1 Million Set To Lose Coverage On January 1
— DrewM

California is often touted as an ObamaCare success. Nearly 1/3 of registrants/shoppers/people who Googled ObamaCare (or however they are measuring it) came from California about 80,000 in total. Of course this "success" is made up mostly of old and sick, so hop aboard the Death Spiral Express!

Now the state has rejected the illegal and unworkable plan to let 1 million plus Californians keep their policies.

Unlike in other states where the insurance commissioners are making the decisoin on Obama's newest scheme, it's the management of the exchange itself who made the call in California.

But in California, although the state's insurance commissioner, Dave Jones, strongly favored Obama's fix, he said he needed the state's new insurance exchange, Covered California, to release insurers from contractual obligations that they cancel policies that did not comply with the law by year end.

Covered California's board decided on Thursday not to allow people to stay in non-compliant plans beyond the end of the year.

"Covered California has spent a lot of time structuring a marketplace that's best for consumers," the exchange's executive director, Peter Lee, told the board before it voted on Thursday.

On Thursday, Jones called Covered California's decision a "disservice to California's consumers," but said there was nothing more he could do.

Huh, it's almost like they had a financial incentive to force people into their crappy programs to subsidize the old and sick who are signing up in their faux market place.

Oh and if you're keeping score...

Covered California has signed up 80,000 uninsured and forced 1.1 million out of their plans. That means there are 1,020,000 MORE uninsured people in California now than before this whole thing started.

Welcome to Liberal World!

So by doing a disservice to their consumers, Covered California is doing what's best for it's consumers?   Or is it that by doing what's best for it's consumers Covered California is   doing a disservice to     its consumers?

Posted by: Nip Sip at November 22, 2013 09:39 AM (0FSuD)

29 part of Allahpundit's argument over at HA In fact, dig down into the numbers that California’s released about its new exchanges enrollees and you’ll find that the heavy majority of them earn too much to qualify for subsidies. That suggests that most of them are people who used to have coverage and then were forced to buy an O-Care plan when that coverage was dropped. Give them the option now of un-canceling their old plan and not only will you lose some revenue, you’ll spoil a rare instance of O-Care working exactly as it’s intended. All of which is why, I think, Obama secretly wants state commissioners (and the California exchange) to reject his “fix.” It’s better for the law if they do and it sets them up to be the bad guy when disgruntled consumers ask why they can’t have their old coverage back. That’s what the fix was really about, of course — shifting blame. The fact that the state’s insurance commissioner sided with O knowing/expecting/quietly hoping that the exchange board would reject O’s fix suggests that he’s not above passing the buck either when there’s an easy way to do so.

90 Democrats also sold Obamacare as an economy stimulator and a job creator.  Let's start seeing more attacks on Obamacare from that angle.  People, if they buy the new, more expensive plans, will have less discretionary money to spend... that's not going to stimulate the economy.  People are losing jobs and getting hours cut so companies can avoid having to provide coverage, the opposite of stimulating an economy.

We keep pounding them on the lost coverage and the price hikes, but how about the effects that logically follow from those things, which (just like quality of coverage and price of premiums) are the very opposite of what Democrats claimed when ramming Obamacare through.

Well I'm one of the victims.  Current plan is to go commando for myself, get the cheapest non-HMO plan for the wife, develop an off-shoring strategy for assets should I get hit by a bus (she's a foreign citizen, in a pinch could go back there, and other than the house I'd transfer the assets there).  Not sure it will work.

But boy will the trust lawyer be shocked if I decide to go to her with questions about it - presto! transformed from a law-abiding rules-following healthy "medical care averse" citizen who's always had catastrophic coverage (even in my 20s) and probably utilized about $500 worth of insurance coverage in my life (middle-aged) to ..... somebody trying to game and plan against the system like a productive business-owner in Argentina or Zimbabwe.

Both of us had a (bare-bones, always my approach) catastrophic plan for $300/month (goes to show that, even with the massive distortion and added costs of the frankenstein "insurance" market as it existed up to now, even in costly CA there were still affordable catastrophic plans).  New rates?  About $900 for the two of us - nice, cool tripling of costs.  Of course, for significantly less coverage.

Unlike some here, I don't plan to harangue my (politically) idiotic family at holiday events.  They're all typically Coastal Clueless - smart, successful, nice, and utterly clueless about their country's history, the sources of its prosperity, and completely in the thrall of the mythology and distortion that constitute "news" coverage.  No framework, and mostly non-facts.  And, of course, socially conditioned to support only Dems.  (darkly funny, the sister and her husband are very active Catholics, the sister hated teacher's unions when her kids were in school - yet these two vote exclusively for abortion freak extremists and wholly-owned tools of the teacher's union, that being the Dem Party of CA - ridiculous!).

145 I went to the grocery store and said I would like a "Silver" food package from the structured food market. But they didn't have anything like that at all! Instead it was a giant, chaotic cornucopia of food. Aisle after aisle. It was mostly decidedly not structure by a commission. How am I supposed to live like this? Am I supposed to select my own food? Who can do that? That's chaos, that's what that is. Sooo unorganized. Soo unstructured. What if I choose the wrong food? What if I buy too much candy or too many processed foods? I don't want to ever have to choose between more than 3 options -- good, better, and best. And I always choose the middle option anyway cause I'm no fancypants and no loser. I'm just a middle-class American. Like you! Thank god there are no platinum plans in my state. Platinum plans really should be left to important people -- like people who sit on commissions that structure marketplaces.

150 I have had much more then a little experience with medical insurance companies. They would place an order then ask for a form to be set. The typesetter would produce the form, then we would wait for approval. The ins co would run the form past some govt agency and seek approval. Then their own crew of lawyers would have to go over it with a fine tooth comb and make a change or two. Then it was back to the typesetter to make the revisions and generate additional proofs. Then we would have to produce a version in Spanish. This process would continue for months on end, as long as six months in some circumstances. Sometimes the cost for all of the alterations would be more costly then the final finished product. ObamaCare is doomed to fail, and there is no unsticky way out of this briar patch. Unfortunately, I think not just individuals, but the entire economy is going to take another nosedive as the inevitable consequence. I still would like to see the numbers split out of those that signed onto the exchanges between those who were uninsurable prior to Obamacare and those that simply  were  voluntarily uninsured and decided to sign up now.

I'm sure  out of those 80,000 that signed up,  not a  majority  of them  were prevented from  buying insurance prior to  Benghazicare.

216 Older or unhealthy people at high risk cannot afford to be without insurance even for a little while so they will make up the bulk of the early signees.  Even if their plan is several times what it was in cost it could still make economic sense for them to seek coverage.

We will have to wait for the penalties and compulsion to kick in for everyone else to see what they do.  As it is now the wise thing to do if you are young and healthy seems to be to wait and see if you can get a better deal once Obama is through making up whatever he thinks the law should be.  It is kind of like Russian Roulette at this point.   Everyone is calculating percentages based on imperfect knowledge.  We are watching Obama but bullets in and take them out of the gun while cackling wildly and spinning the chamber.

But there is also the tar baby aspect.  Once you get into the Obamacare you may be mired in something you cannot get out of even if a better deal comes along later.  People may choose to hold out in hope the Republicans can take back enough of the government to set things aright.

As it is right now most people can't even get on the website to sign up so it is a moot point.  We will see if young people decide just to pay the penalty, or to ignore the penalty as well once things are functioning.  That decision is being made for them currently since buying a plan is not an option due to their being no mechanism to purchase one.

The only thing Obama has been good at is creating a huge amount of uncertainty and more or less freezing the entire economy in place.  The only growth seems to be coming from the Treasury printing up more dollars and the CPI hiding the inflation since it doesn't take into account energy, food, housing etc... which is destroying wealth at an unprecedented rate.   We have a stock price bubble since all of that money has to go somewhere and corporations are able to charge whatever they want without fear of competition coming along since no one is going to create that competition in this climate of fear and cronyism.  Insurance companies certainly couldn't collude in the Obamacare forces them to do.  We are pretty much as screwed up as Europe now.

Ironically, the only thing saving us from being completely frakked is fracking.

polynikes, perhaps as I'm a policy-geek at heart (or maybe because I'm rational and analytical, ya know, for stuff that needs that sort of thing, as opposed to sports or fashion or movies), the point you were getting at is among the things that alienates and infuriates and amazes me the most.

The best health care system in the world (whose flaws were entirely borrowed trouble from federal and state regulation) is being detonated so that ...... a tiny outlying category of "beneficiaries" can be helped.  WTF?

Exactly how many households declare bankruptcy each year due to medical expenditure?  It cannot be statistically significant on a national basis.  And they can be helped, directly, easily and cheaply (by national standards).

Again - the 2010 Census had what, 32 million uninsured?  Subtract the voluntarily uninsured (using common sense analysis based on the income levels and age groups involved) and I believe you get down to around 10 - 12 million INvoluntarialy uninsured - maybe.  Even that group has to be looked at.  Surely many of those are voluntarily uninsured, if only through incompetence, laziness, or mental disorder.  And THOSE people are covered by so many safety nets nobody who doesn't study the subject can even name them all.

While true 1.1 million Californians have lost their old policies many of those will, or already have, resign with their current insurers under new plans. While more people are definitely going to ultimately end up losing their coverage then gaining coverage, it won't be everyone that got dropped from their old plans, and didn't migrate to the exchanges, losing insurance. But those who renew directly with their insurers are still hopping mad at their rate and deductible hikes.

Duke settled with for $12 mill each and they are STILL suing City of Durham and expect to win a shit pot there. Word is the City will have to increase the by I Want This">property tax to pay the judgement.

That $12 mill is tax free.

That completely destroys my world view. I was convinced that going to an ivy league wasn't worth the money.

347 Posted by: Nip Sip at November 22, 2013 02:44 PM (0FSuD) Problem is that Doctors would have to sign up... and THEY are also governed by State Law. The Health industry is no where near a Free Enterprise system... it was already one of the most regulated and Lawyerized industries we have... The only way a Concierge Doctor would work, is if they have a rich backer... and take cash payments from the Rich... ie... like the TV show Royal Pains... IMO won't work for Real people.

351 "McConnell said the Tea Party was ‘nothing but a bunch of bullies,’” the source said. “And he said ‘you know how you deal with schoolyard bullies? You punch them in the nose and that’s what we’re going to do.'"

Go for it, you son of a bitch. You don't have a problem going after someone that's supposed to be on your side, but when it comes to opposing Democrats, what passes for spine in your body melts as quickly as an ice cube tossed into a pot of boiling water.

Fucking asshole.

Btw, working here is ocassionally like working with the Horde. I'm wheeling the big trashcan down the hallway collecting trash from all the offices to go dump in our dumpster. Standard Friday thing. I get to grandpa's office and kick the trashcan a couple times and yell "Bring out your dead!" "What??" "Bring out your dead!" *turns around quickly* "My what???" "YOUR DEAD, grandpa. It was a joke." "Oooohhh. I thought you said to bring out my dick." "............................"

359 I used to hear all these things about how the best snipers in the world couldn't make the shot. Then I learned to shoot and realized that it was a simple shot with a rifle. Almost harder to miss than hit, especially firing twice. Less than a hundred yards is barely enough to tell if you're zeroed.

Besides, cash payments to doctors will be forbidden in the very near future. In fact, I foresee a new form of voucher payments, MediBucks, issued by the government in the amount your plan allows you to spend.

Correct and functionally the car was still from an optics standpoint and aim after the initial shot....

the kooks love to pretend that Oswald was Barney Fife...nope he was an above average Military Marksman and contrary to legend it was not a horrifically complex shot.

85% of military trained shooters testes could replicate or go better than Oswald on a simulated test... hell civilians replicated the shots in '67 for CBS...

377 @350 No, doctors won't have to sign up any more than repair shops would have to sign up for your car insurance. Loyd's makes a cash payment, you do with it what you want. Get your dr or repair where ever you want.

378 @364 I don't see how you could "intercept" a payment on insurance. As to stopping Dr from excepting cash, I am sure the Drs in Costa Rica or the Bahama's will love that idea. How do prevent a person from expecting payment for a service? Threaten to take their license?
