Cameras Catch Law Firm Burglars on Video
— Ace

One additional bit, too: There were "multiple" break-ins. They exited and reentered more than once.

The burglars are dressed in street clothes -- t-shirt, shorts, cap -- but then, the idea of Evil Elite Operatives always dressing in impeccably-tailored suits or wicked-cool black leather trenchcoats is probably Something Hollywood Made Up.

7 no I think we're looking a professional dirty-work detectives who know to dress in street clothes because they knew they'd be on camera.

They keep their heads down as they approach the camera.  They knew there was a camera there.

Well thank goodness the State Department categorically denied they had anything to do with this.

Given their fantastic track record in the last 5 years, what with a peaceful Middle East, Iran not acquiring nuclear weapons and an increasingly stable North Korea, I think we can all agree to take them at their word.

Anyone who was just robbing the place would have taken the easiest stuff to get, and then gotten out. Sure they'd take everything they could carry, but multiple trips? Taking just the computer equipment and some files? No, this was directed. The only question is "by whom?"

Here's my question- why *not* steal other stuff, too?

I     can think of three options:

1) They were told specifically what to get    but had to go back several times because they kept grabbing similar items that were not the right ones.

OR

2)   The person directing them told them not to grab anything other than what they were sent to get because every extra item taken from the office is one more piece of evidence that, if located, might be tracked back to the    mastermind culprit.

OR

3) They're just really, REALLY stupid.

None of these is mutually exclusive, of course.

No, this was directed. The only question is "by whom?"

That is indeed the million dollar question.

Plus

you need to get away from the bomb after you set it off

There's always remote detonation, but if they catch you or something happens, they can prevent the bomb detonation.

With the timer, it's gonna blow unless someone goes in there and stops it.

Creates better plot tension, though knowing criminals the remote detonation is more likely (gives you more 'control'.)

The actual story was that the party was making introductions, and the wizard challenged Spoony's half-orc thief how he could ever be sneaky enough given his size. The thief said 'I can pick your pocket' and the wizard replied 'Show me.'

So the thief punches him, doing enough subdual damage to knock him out, and then takes his coinpurse.

That segued into a story to long to recount here about a player who used the phrase "I'm not that kind of thief" every time any of the usual thief skill checks came up.

Posted by: Mr. Moo Moo at July 08, 2013 04:19 PM (HDgX3) Firefox has a 10-year-old memory leak in it and is a pig, and their dev cycle adds bugs faster than they can fix them, and they keep changing the interface in subtle, annoying ways (like reversing the "open in new tab" and "open" menu options in the context menu). Chrome is a pig, insists on creating security flaws, and fights mightily to keep you from doing what you want to do. The chrome clones don't have security updates often enough, Safari is pretty but dumb and trips over itself, Opera was always the nerd who keeps trying to make excuses as to why its job is impossible. IE, I don't think it's more of a PITA than the others but I don't use i much. You still have to bang it with a hammer to make it work on a basic level. Browsers in general have become markedly worse in the last 5-7 years, as far as stability and usability.

Windows 8 as an operating system is in general faster, better, etc. But the drastic change in the UI may put it into the Vista category.

It really depends on how you use your system - for me the new UI completely broke my usual style of using Windows. I use the Start menu A LOT and have many windows open at the same time.

So for me Win 8 has just sucked and wasted a lot of my time. I'm holding out for a usable service pack or whatever comes after Win 8.

There is some logic to your point of view, but get a LINUX guy to load UBUNTU (or other 'nix) on an old computer and try it out.  It is pretty amazing how much basic stuff is there out of the box in a "standard" off the shelf free Linux distribution.  And it pretty much has the Windows feel, so you are not forced to a command line interface.

359 The funny thing is, they do that so that one crashed page won't take out the browser. Because people complained about the bloat. So they still took their core stuff and put it in its own process to share across the tabs. Which, basically, makes them the same as FF and IE in that respect, just with more processes to eat my threads. So when something on a *page* fails, you might be fine. But when the java-script causes the browser to throw an unhandled exception (which happens much more often than a mere page failure), it's still going to kill the whole browser.

411 Imo there are bright shiny clues and leads all over the place on this.

It seems glaringly obvious to me that at least one of these two are familiar with the layout and operation of Schulman & Mathias, and they know exactly what they're looking for/where its located for before they broke in.

Also the fact that they go back multiple times indicates that someone on the outside who also knows what is being looked for is telling them they don't have it yet so go back and try again.

If the authorities put once ounce of effort into finding out who these folks are and why they broke in, they'll catch them (which is why I'm pretty sure it will never be investigated).

Or if it IS investigated, the FBI will get around to it just as soon as they have interviewed all...er, one...of the tea party groups hassled by the IRS.

Something is making me write the name Eddie Bernice Johnson.

There are still huge swaths of proprietary code living on Linux distros.  There's also the problem that there's no way to know if compiled code is the same as the code you see.  Do you compile everything yourself, or just the kernel?  Finally, there is code so arcane and dense that only a handful of people on Earth really understand it.  Do you really know if some odd transient bug from that area is accidental?

A couple of riots: 1837 NYC Barrel of Flour price rose from $5.62 to $12.00 1846 NYC Irish Labor worked thirteen hours a day for sixty-five cents. Their strike resulted in industrialists importing German labor. South Ferry Riot: At this time this vicinity was filled with shanties surrounded by hills. The military came and planted cannon on these lines, and remained on duty for nearly a week. They were the Union Blues, Captain Goodchild; the City Guard, Captain Olney; the Fusileer Guard, Captain Dillon; the Columbian Riflemen, Captain Morrison, all spirited young men. During this time the strikers issued a notice, which read, "To the laborers of New York, two hundred and fifty of your fellow laborers, because they refused to work thirteen hours a day for sixty-five cents, appeal to you for assistance to resist this outrageous oppression." ...The Germans continued to work unmolested while guarded by the military. The strikers next put posters on the fences, calling a meeting on Bergen Hill at 3 o'clock on Thursday, April 21, 1845, which read "to take into consideration the conduct of Carmichael, the contractor, in bringing German laborers in place of those who were willing to give ten hours work a day for seven shillings. 492 BAM! Judge to allow tox report of St Tray as testimony!

Posted by: Billy Bob, pseudo intellectal at July 08, 2013 01:04 PM (wR+pz)

493 456 437 I believe that Trayvon was run over mistakenly by an emergency vehicle responding to the 911 call. -- I wasn't surprised to hear from the witnesses details that reveal Martin's body was left outdoors in the on/off rain for hours before finally getting bagged improperly, and when finally transported to the county office, was NOT identified AND was autopsied in an unprofessional manner by the Asian emigrant doctor who bragged at having done over 3000 autopsies. He didn't bother reading the police report for the Martin body, didn't bother properly reviewing ANYTHING, and failed to supervise his underlings. Dr. Bao figured that this was just another unidentified black youth shot dead, nothing special, no reason to bother with details. Just slice him open and get the damned bullet. Case closed: dead 71" black male, unknown age, no ID, not obese. In his opinion, he has no opinion other than what is not a fact. And with no memory, his opinion is less than nothing.

that's Helen Thomas territory

We watched that movie Dave  last night. She was in it, as was Ben Stein. That movie was funny in its  innocence compared to today,  especially the  ending monologue  at the joint session.

496 491 Why? I've seen people get extremely paranoid on pot. It's not a harmless drug. I've seen people do crazy shit on Tequila too. Does that mean I think we should outlaw wine and brandy? "Pot" isn't a drug. It's a plant with several psychoactive compounds, and each strain has different mixes of these compounds. Maybe those weren't harmless people? I've seen folks that were imbalanced have their moods dramatically affected by blood sugar levels, not to mention caffeine levels early in the morning. It ain't the plant that's the problem - but I digress.

Posted by: Jones in CO at July 08, 2013 04:23 PM (8sCoq) Did you consider doing a system restore to before ie 10 was installed? My laptop installed it and I hated it after less than 1 day. So I did a restore back to before it installed and then hid the update so it wouldn't try and put it back on my computer.

No, she can't.

Jesus Crist, State, haven't you ever watched the show? She can run a spectroanalysis of the fumes rising from the crack in your ass as picked up by a 200x300 pixel security cam with a fixed lens at 1000'. At night, around a corner. She will then be able to tell with 100% certainty what brand of ketchup you had on your burger last Tuesday.

Only Star Trek NG technobabble amd magic technology can beat NCIS technobabble and MT.

507 504 Maybe, yeah. Funny to watch a couple of guys swaying without wind. Kinda like yawning? The more one yawns, or sways, the more the other. They'd be tipping over like democrat party islands. But it doesn't take getting stoned to notice when someone is stoned. I'll never forget the public tongue lashing that our old school Choir Director gave a soprano high on pot back in '72. He decided that year to retire, not worth putting up with the likes of hippie yutes.

The funny thing is, people arguing from your perspective tend to be YOUNG pot smokers.  Old pot smokers don't make the same argument, mostly because they have a hard time stringing that many words together.

But go ahead, tell me how harmless it is.  And while you're at  it, compare it to excessive alcohol consumption.  That's always a winning argument.

ALSO, Tracy Martin threw his lawyer under the bus (Crump). Crump supposedly was deposed yesterday. Crump supposedly said that Tracy listened to a clean-up 911 tape, and I take it that is why he changed his opinion about the person yelling for help.

525 Pot really shouldn't be a factor in this because it mostly just makes people hungry and lazy. But being stuck at home I've seen lots of 48 Hours episodes and I'm amazed how many blacks kill each other over the stuff. Mostly inner city blacks, but almost nevertheless mostly black. Over tiny bags. I don't get it. I never knew any white dopers who would kill somebody over pot unless they were ripped off for thousands of dollars. I do know white trash kill people over petty amounts of pot -- it happens occasionally in my part of the country. It just seems to be more prevalent in the black community. Must be a cultural thing, meaning: 1) I'm incapable of understanding it, and 2) you can't criticize it.

526 I went psychotic smoking pot, and it lasted (for years) until I finally stopped smoking. I know other people who were crazy/disturbed before hand, and pot made them dangerous.
