Captain America: The Winter Soldier UK Trailer
— Gabriel Malor

Your afternoon open thread.

From what I gather, helicarriers are death traps. Which, y'know, the obvious end result from an absurd idea, but COMICS.

The right attitude.

I found this easy stress management technique in November issue of The Journal of Clinical Psychology. The simple protocol worked wonders for me. I thought IÂ’d pass it along to you.

1. Picture yourself lying prone on a warm rock that hangs just above a deep stream.

2. Your hands dangle in the cool running water.

3. Birds chirp sweetly in the cool mountain air.

4. No one knows your secret place.

5. You are in total seclusion from that hectic place called the world.

6. The water is so clear that you can make out the face of the politician you are holding underwater. See? it worked. YouÂ’re smiling. You feel better already.

I view that as a lost marketing opportunity.  I would have given it away as a free promotional prize to any country that would buy a couple of dozen F-18s.

In fact, I would throw in letting them wander around Davis-Monthan and pick as many Navy F-4s or any other carrier aircraft they want for free.

The logical customer would be India.  It would certainly be a crack up if they got this mothballed carrier up and underway before that Russian carrier they bought is ever functional.  Japan could take that deal if they wanted to spin up the Chinese.  What the heck, Taiwan could afford to buy a couple of dozen F-18s and maintain a carrier.  Maybe then the Chinese would break diplomatic relations like Saudi Arabia just did.  Israel could take two carriers and keep one in the Mediterranean and one in the Red Sea, or better still, the Persian Gulf.

Oh, well.  There is still the Kittyhawk.

Posted by: Vic at October 24, 2013 02:11 PM (zZbNF) ------------------ Paul Newman looks better as a zombie than Redford has for years. Now, Redford might still be attractive if he had cut down on the sun exposure, let his hair go gray rather than dye it orange, cut down the shine on the snow white teethy caps, and laid off the Botox. IF. And you're right. Newman was never a jerk about his politics. He didn't have the hate going. Class act all around. Same with his wife, who incidentally also aged very well.

110 For some inexplicable reason, I enjoyed ScarJo's early acting career. For some unknowable, mysterious reason, I was fascinated by her acting when she was 19. And now that she's almost 30 I'm ... less fascinated. Obviously, one of the great mysteries of the universe. The only explanation is that she's getting worse at acting. That is the only possible explanation. Cause I tell you, I was riveted during her early roles. In recent years ... for some unknown reason ... less riveted. I blame her diminished acting ability.

Yup.  "McCarthy hearings" is a douchey strawman.   Redford exercised his First Amendment right to be a jackass; we're exercising our First Amendment rights to not associate with jackasses; there is no need to imagine there's more to it than that.

115 Read that the proposed Marine cover is a throwback to what they wore prior to 1922 when a change was made because it looked too close to what the French wore.   The idea that they need to move to a one-cover-for-all sexes is the crazy part.  So next, the mens shirts will now have darts sewn in to allow for their breasts.... because equality-eleventy shutup

Way to gay up the Marines, dipshits. This is like when Gen. Shinseki pulled the two-fer of pissing all over the 75th Ranger Regiment's tradition of wearing the black beret* and making it the garrison cover for ALL soldiers, making the US Army look like every Joe Shit The Ragman formation gracing parade fields throughout South America and the Middle East. Why not mandate bushy moustaches for all soldiers while you're at it? *as a consolation, the Rangers were then authorized to wear TAN berets, which could only look less tough if they had the faggy French apple stem sticking out of the top.

Because that was never what he was going to give them, and anyone with half a brain should have known that. As for that trailer - they can be so misleading it isn't funny. I'd be wary about what conclusions I drew from it.

146 Here's the rub if Congress is stupid enough to change the law.  If they make it a real penalty instead of a tax that has no penalty all of Robert;s justification for saying the law is OK because it is a tax goes away.

All somebody like Cruz who has argued at the Supreme Court would have to do is ask for and file an emergency hearing to have the law invalidated because the law no longer conforms to the ruling that Roberts made.

148 Scarllett on her good looks from keeping her from more challenging roles: The Avengers actress recently lamented her good looks for keeping her from landing coveted roles. “That has happened to me before,” the star said of losing out on a parts for being a pretty face. “That’s always an unfortunate thing… I would imagine when casting someone, you would want to challenge yourself in some way. It is so interesting to see actors transform. There are certainly plenty of times when I am definite not sexy.” No doubt, Scarley, you don't look so good without all the makeup, but maybe you're just a wooden actress and couldn't do more challenging roles.

150 Helen Mirren was called the sexpot of Stratford or something like that because she started out in very sexually charged roles,. yet she was playing in Shakespeare as Cleopatra at age 20. It's a shame SJ can get some acting chops doing Shakespeare or live theatre, but she might turn out to be as good an actress as the one who played Maggie Thatcher. I doubt it though.
