Change in Policy in Non-Political Threads
— Ace

As regards Non-Political Threads, I'm going to try something new.

First, anytime someone posts a Non-Political Thread, and there is no politically-oriented post which has been posted recently (say, within the past hour), I'll ask the person posting the Non-Political Thread to also post an Open Thread just below. Just a blank thread, basically, which says "take all political comments or off-topic comments here."

Second, I'm going to ask people to respect the topic of a Non-Political Thread and not go off-topic simply because it's now (for the moment) the top post on the site.

The reasons for this are simple: While any week will have 100 political threads, there is only one Gaming Thread per week, one Book thread per week, one or maybe two of CAC's astronomy threads per week, and so on.

Using such threads to talk about the Hot Political Topics is understandable, given that people rush to the Top Thread looking for the "active conversation" thread. But this results in people not really being able to have a conversation about much besides politics. You can't really have much of a conversation about, say, some cooking technique CBD is discussing if there are two or three stray cooking comments among the first hundred comments, with the bulk of them about the shutdown.

That's why I'm asking for cobs and guest-bloggers to simultaneously post an Open Thread just beneath their actual thread. This will serve to give people a place to discuss politics -- which I know is the reason most people come to the site -- which is also a clearly designated "active conversation" thread, while leaving the Non-Political Thread alone, so that people can actually get that critical mass of comments necessary to have any kind of interesting discussion about the topic at hand.

So, three requests: First that cobs and Guest Bloggers post an empty Open Thread, to serve as a new "active conversation" thread for political talk;

that they end begin their post by noting an Open Thread is now directly below the current Top Thread, and that all off-topic comment should be directed there (Update: Include the directive at the beginning of the post, because someone not interested in the topic is not going to read anything in the post, but will just jump to the comments),

and that commenters respect this, and understand that some people, while of course interested in the Shutdown and all the rest, may sometimes want to take advantage of a thread dedicated to their niche interest, just to talk about the actual niche subject itself without the comments immediately being swamped by the general political discussion of the day.

I think this solution will both give people who want to talk just politics the Top Thread they want (even though it will be in the second position, not the first) and will also allow Non-Political Threads to serve the purpose for which they're intended, which is letting commenters drop politics for a while and discuss something which, while not political, still interests them as people.

Thanks for understanding.

I will bump this thread to both Saturday and Sunday so that people understand the basic idea.

By the way, as an example of this idea (let's see if it works), We Politely Request That All Off-Topic or Political Comments Be Directed to the Thread Directly Below This One, Which Will Serve Officially as the Current "Active Conversation" Thread for All Discussions Not Related To This Topic.

35 I get the concept but think it kinda unworkable Ace. People always seem to gravitate to the newest Thread for better or worse. And also breaking news will always trump the rules. And what happens sometimes is a non-political thread that is scheduled seems to interrupt a real rip roaring political thread and throws everything off. But for my part I will try to obey the rules and suggestions of those appointed over me. Now what's for lunch

Posted by: Nevergiveup at October 08, 2013 09:21 AM (1RQeV)

36 Great idea. The threads get so long in the first couple minutes that it's impossible to follow.

37 >>>28 Just wondering -- what is the topic of this thread? the policy. whether it's workable, etc. I think it should be workable. I don't think people have some driving need to post on the current top thread; I think they just go to the top thread because that immediately becomes the active conversation thread. If there is a clearly designated active conversation thread besides the top thread, they can go there and still get what they want (i.e., to have their comments seen).

Sorry, look, but when CAC posts a very good post on astronomy, I want him to actually have the benefit of sparking a conversation on that subject, and not have his post (which may have taken hours to write) simply become Shutdown Thread #438. Writers write here to be read, to start conversations they want to have, and to, yeah, get complimented once in a while. That's what they get out of it. or that's what they EXPECT to get out of it. If they're not getting anything out of it, they'll stop writing, and the weekend will go back to being nothing but one Open Thread after another.

Again, so long as all people NOT interested in Astronomy are directed to the thread below, then everyone knows where "the active thread" is, and there's no loss to anyone. The writer of the thread gets what he wants, the commenters who are not interested in the subject get what they want, and everyone wins. Just saying "I want to post where I want to post" and kicking up a fuss over being directed to post in the SECOND post rather than the first strikes me as... unreasonably self-interested.

Well--everyone thinks they are an expert on politics--astronomy--not so much. ... right well it's a niche interest. But a niche interest still has a niche. An astronomy thread will never have a LOT of comments, but if the comments are on the subject of astronomy, there'll be some discussion, which is what people actually want. Not that it will turn into a 1000 comment thread on the Wonders of the Universe, but if it turns into a 150 comment thread on astronomy, mission achieved.

101 75 sorry I'm going to have to pull rank on this: Someone who spends an hour or more writing a post has a greater priority than someone writing a ten second comment. 103 Honestly I believe the people around here are mostly of above average intelligence and have eclectic interests. Many of the comments are just to blow off some steam or express frustration. But as the old adage rightly indicates- you can't hide intelligence in stupid.

104 the policy. whether it's workable, etc. I think it should be workable. I don't think people have some driving need to post on the current top thread; I think they just go to the top thread because that immediately becomes the active conversation thread. If there is a clearly designated active conversation thread besides the top thread, they can go there and still get what they want (i.e., to have their comments seen). Posted by: ace at October 08, 2013 01:22 PM (/IWYB) I'm not (just) ass kissing, but I think this is an excellent idea and a nice way to attempt to balance the LOOK SQUIRREL IT'S SHINY SHINY SQUIRREL nature of the Horde with allowing air to be given to non-political stuff. Especially now with tensions so high, it's nice to have a place to go and talk about something non-political with some of the funniest people on the Interwebs. As you noted, it's about rehabituating that it's not necessarily the newest post where you should scurry. Also, this will hopefully cut down on the how dare you post something not political don't you know the country is ending bullshit.

146 Some good threads dead-end only because a new thread has been started. People with comments on the older topic either don't post them or they post them in a new thread.

Here's my suggestion - Instead of a linear page with a single "top" thread, put up a panel of threads (something like the hotair.com format) to encourage people to continue commenting on earlier topics and keep the comments focused on those topics.

Posted by: fawkes at October 08, 2013 09:35 AM (Djwm9)

147 I always thought the "wait until at least comment 100 before going off-topic" was a good self-enforced rule.

By about 100, unless it's a fast-moving news day--and if everyone stays on-topic--then most who are interested have had their say.
If it's a good topic and has sparked a lot of interest, most people stay on-topic.

But, I can see the "why" of this. Give those who can't check in every hour a chance to post a comment on something they're interested in and--the whole point of commenting--get feedback.

I know I've run into that: Come back after a few hours and see several posts, want to make a comment but the most recent is off-topic. So, I've just not commented (unless it's already gone off-topic).

Just so we're clear though ace.  In the "niche threads" we still have fairly broad latitude on the particular discussion of that niche right?

So if I want to ask questions about telescopes in the astronomy thread or ask general advice in the cooking thread, or discuss a games I'm trying to catch up in in the gaming thread..etc. etc. etc. That's still all good right?

Otherwise I think if we can skip the "New thread, everyone abandon the old one!" thing we'll be good. (Although I support newer software.)

245 I've noticed that when DiT posts a somber military related thread, there are few comments. I believe that this is because people respect the content, and avoid going off topic. Yet many people don't have a lot to say about the topic, so the thread is sparsely commented on.

This is not a criticism, just an observation. I love those posts, but I rarely comment on them. Since I don't want to spoil the thread, I wander off until a new thread appears.

So maybe having an open thread below will keep the overall conversation levels at a higher pace. Sounds good to me.

Posted by: NPS at October 08, 2013 10:08 AM (ggRof)

446 What if we cleverly connect or tie in the top non-political thread to breaking news or politics? Would that comment count as "off-topic" or "on-topic"? So, in this example, with this non-political top thread being about comment policy, while the current just-below-it "top political thread" being about the gestapo tactics of NPS enforcers, I might sarcastically and joshingly say, "Ace also announces he is hiring National Park Service employees to monitor all non-political threads for off-topic comments! /s". Would such a comment count as violation of the policy? Is purposely "bending the rules" a bit frowned upon? A clearer, less convoluted example: Top non-political thread is about making peanut butter sandwiches. Just below that, top "open thread" is topicless, open for any comment. Comments on the top peanut butter thread might go: 1. I love peanut butter. 2. The best way to make sandwiches is with slices of bread. 3. I still remember my mom's sandwiches from grade school. 4. Don't use Jif, it's full of high fructose corn syrup. 5. It always sticks to the roof of my mouth. ...and so on. So would it be a violation of the policy if the next comment on the peanut butter thread was, "6. I'm still miffed that kids are taught the myth that George Washington Carver invented peanut butter, a lie which is patently absurd and only pushed as part of the PC agenda. Peanut butter had been around for a century before Carver was even born; he merely claimed (without documentation) that he had come up with dozens of other uses for peanuts, most of which were industrial products, not food. Our education system still pushes PC myths just to "boost the self-esteem" of minority students, even though they're being taught lies. When will it end?" So, it's in the topic of peanut butter, but it also violates the spirit of the thread, which is supposed to b non-political. OK or not?

This is the Left's failing.  I see no reason to make it ours.

Believe it or not, I like discussing the objective merits of a movie, or music, or art, without having to have some damn fool hunch over, grunt sweatily, cut a runny turd into the conversational pool by declaring that "[X actor/musician/artist] is SUCH A LIBERAL IDIOT AND I REFUSE TO SUPPORT THOSE LIBERAL BASTARDS."

We get it.  We know.  We don't care.  Elvis Costello is as brainlessly left-wing as they get (this is a guy who wrote MULTIPLE songs wishing for Maggie Thatcher's death) -- his first decade of music making is still absolutely superb, essential work, as Ace will tell you.  (But Ace likes Punch The Clock, which makes him gay and not in the acceptable Malor-esque way but in the "beaten up in high school" way.)

I hear it not only has threaded comments, with avatars, and imbedded links, pix, and vids, it also has hundreds topical forum rooms. #twoweeks Butt syriasly, youguys, I often think about Ace and this site - certainly the community fostered here is valuable, but it's all on one guy's head, and I can't imagine that Ace could've known when he began what was to be generated under his rule. (Thanks for hosting what must sometimes seem an unasked for and thankless kingdom, BTW.) It's theological. There is that which the gods encourage, that which the gods discourage. 461 >>>>"6. OK or not? ... not okay, it should be posted in the designated open thread below. with respect, everyone here defaults to politics because it's an area in which we're all "experts." Well, not really, but we all have easy things we can toss out about politics. Let a Non political Thread breathe. What's the worst that could happen?

What a surprise to find you of all people posting this.  What a selfish turd.

Did it ever occur to you that Ace of Spades HQ used to be something far more than just a "political website?"  It was once (before you started hanging around, which is probably not entirely uncoincidental) a CULTURAL HUMOR site with open conservative politics.  A lot of people -- whose opinions are infinitely more valuable than yours -- would like to see it return to that format.  If we lose the 'benefit' of your readership, then que sera, sera.

Take it from one who knows about these things: you are a truly remarkable asshole.

543 This is going to go over as well as trying to herd an angry herd of cats with rabies - - on meth.

545 I like the new posting segregation --> Makes the first "I'd hit it." post much easier to find!

547 Sounds like an excellent idea. Just as a matter of effectiveness, it would probably be more successful if you put the open thread above the niche thread instead of below. The people that want to comment in the gun thread, for example, will still likely scroll down to get to it.

Assuming that someone actually remembers to post the gun thread. /grumble

It's a good idea, Ace.

But I think it will be tough to enforce it.

When breaking news is happening, it's kinda nice to get a heads-up about it from the commenters here.

One of the cool things about your site, Ace, is the freedom that you allow your commenters to have here.

I will abide by your wishes, though.

549 Goes triple for football threads.  I want to escape the political nonsense for a few hours on the weekends.
