Change: Obama Secretly Extends Enrollment Deadline By One Day
— Ace

He Hearts Secret Laws.

At midnight Monday, the official deadline arrives for Americans to sign up through the new federal health insurance exchange for health plans that begin Jan. 1. But, without any public announcement, Obama administration officials have changed the rules so that people will have an extra day to enroll, according to two individuals with knowledge of the switch.

Over the weekend, government officials and outside IT contractors working on the online marketplaceÂ’s computer system made a software change that automatically gives people a Jan. 1 start date for their coverage as long as they enroll by 11:59 p.m. Christmas Eve.

A source says the Secret Extension was mandated by Obama's Princely Right in order to offer a back-stop should the system go down on December 23 due to a rush of sign-ups.

According to the two individuals, both of whom spoke on condition of anonymity about a matter that is not public, the one-day extension is automatic, built into the software, and cannot be overridden by individual insurers if they object.

...

In recent days, insurance industry leaders have protested other 11th-hour rule changes by the administration....

On Monday morning, one insurance industry official, informed by The Washington Post about the quiet deadline extension, criticized the move. “Making yet another last-minute change to the rules by shortening an already-tight time period in which to process enrollments makes it even harder to ensure people who have selected a plan are able to have their coverage begin in January,” said the official, who spoke on the condition of anonymity because the change has not been made public.

41 Here is what I don't get. Why doesn't the CEO of Blue Cross (or whoever) call up the CEO of Aetna and Humana and all of these other insurers and just say 'Forget it, lets ALL get out of these exchanges if he makes one more change we don't like." No insurers on the exchange = no exchange = no law. HE needs them more than they need him, so WHY are they putting up with this? Is the lure of the new customers the individual mandate is supposed to bring that good? How can it be if they are being made to accept a terrible risk pool and being "strongly encouraged" to cover things that the plans don't actually cover. Cannot imagine this is going to end well for the insurers, so I cannot understand why they keep going along. I'm guessing at this point, they must want to stay on King Obama's good size for the inevitable bailout. The republicans should be hammering the idea of these "risk corridor" bailouts EVERY DAY and should stick an amendment on every single piece of legislation to get rid of the insurance company bailout. Let the dems repeatedly vote to preserve this bailout every single day as the law fails (and get the insurers scared about potential repeal of the bailout so they stop going along with this nonsense!)

However, I know of several people who get to choose between "Self" and "Family" as their only options (no "Self Plus children." or "Self Plus one.") So since both husband and wife work (there's some math here I'm omitting by the way*) one of them gets double covered since the cost is $0 to do so. Admittedly though that's a funky thing. *The omitted math is that one of them actually has a "Self + One" option, but for some odd reason it costs more than the "Self + Family" the other has. And their employer mandates they take at least some employer insurance, so they took the cheapest one and roll with it.

92 Why not 15 minutes, why not for-fukkin'-ever. Because Republicans secretly (or not-so-secretly) like ObamaCare. They just wish they were holding the reigns of power. Which is why they still view this in the terms of political contest rather than a fundamental disagreement over the nature of Government.

Can't say I feel a whole lot of pity for insurance company executives right about now. They fairly salivated at the idea of Obamacare since a world where everyone is forced by law to buy their product--at inflated prices--is their idea of Sugar Candy Mountain.  The only good thing about any kind of transition to single payer and full-on socialized healthcare would be the sound of their collective wailing and gnashing of teeth.

People get it wrong about large multinational corporations being hostile to socialism. Although it seems counterintuitive, big business interests love socialism and other big government variants and hate small business. Historically, they have closely allied themselves with authoritarian regimes while simultaneously locking out smaller competitors who can't afford such strategically favorable access to the throne.

However this turns out, I can only hope the President and his fellatio-friendly corporate allies all go down together.

Were I a general counsel for an insurance company, once I was done injecting the heroin into my eyeball, I would explain to the board that hell yes we were going to head to court immediately seeking an injunction against this unilateral lawmaking. I mean, since the company is going to be destroyed due to having to pay claims for people who aren't actually insureds or by the shareholder derivative suits based on losses to the company stemming from attempting to comply with the minute to minute changes to the law or by having to treat all physicians as being part of the network no matter what or by having to issue catastrophic policies without any actuarial analysis being done, what with the actuary department having committed mass seppuku or by the administrative actions against the company due to have violated some regulatory change or other or by some combination of the above, fuck it. This is going to require a programming change that would normally take 6 - 12 weeks for completion (rough estimate, including a fairly abbreviated Test and QA cycle), and now insurers have less than a day to make it.

166 I've been chasing a couple healthcare threads that I've seen discussed and found something interesting.

If you are currently without insurance, and want to avoid Obamacare, it looks like there is a way to do it.

First you need an alternative to insurance.  Enter the "Healthcare Ministries" which are legal under ACA, and you aren't fined if you are a member.  I'm not 100% sure how they work, but the "premium" plan I looked at costs $300 a month and covers up to $1M in medical costs.

http://tinyurl.com/m37ahvq

Now if you then couple that with doctors and hospitals that don't take insurance, and offer up front pricing...

http://tinyurl.com/bdmpvmb

It looks like you have avoided Obamacare, avoided the penalty, are covered for expensive costs, and have monthly costs more closely in line which what we were paying last year.

Plus you have cut the insurance company out of the loop completely.

I believe Republican strategy is to say and do nothing while Obamacare collapses into itself, creating a gravity- and popularity-sucking singularity which will pull in and destroy any Democratic politician too closely associated with it. Not a bad strategy on a superficial level but still inherently flawed. Failure to exploit an opponent's weaknesses and gaffes is a failure of nerve. It shows a certain passivity and demonstrates an unwillingness to engage, to get down and dirty. GOP leadership is, in a word, chickenshit.

For their part, the Democrats wouldn't hesitate to go for the kick in the balls or the rabbit punch at the back of the neck whenever the opportunity presents. They don't win elections because of their policies. They win elections because of their tactics.
