They are manufactured in fairly poor conditions in China, or now China is outsourcing to even poorer 3rd world countries. The book "Cheap, the High Cost of Discount Culture" is good, and discusses this in one of its chapters.

85 NDH & y-not, Ann Taylor used to have things that were of a much higher quality. Sometime in 2011 their clothes became as bad as Loft's version but with a much higher price. Last year I bought a dress because it's the perfect color of pink for me. I wore it & then noticed it had no lining. The prices are too high for summer dresses that used to Be silk & lined. I bought a sweater last month only because it was my birthday month & they sent me $15 off coupon.

Sometime in 2011 their clothes became as bad as Loft's version but with a much higher price. --- I find in general that clothing has really gone downhill. J Crew was a place I used to look at on occasion and my recollection was it was good stuff, but now it's like Old Navy at 5x the price. Hell, even the Gap used to have plain clothes that were decent quality. Now there is one line of slacks they carry that I like, but that's it. I find that the stuff I gravitate towards at Ann Taylor is higher quality than they carry at Loft, but I never pay full price at AT -- or anywhere, really. Our closest one always has a ton of stuff on sale. I usually get nice skirts there.
