Cheap solar power 15% conversion efficiency...
— Purple Avenger

...using rust.

...This allows water splitting to take place that leads to the capture of about 15% of the energy in the incident sunlight - that which falls on a set area for a set length of time. This energy can then be stored in the form of hydrogen...

The big thing about hydrogen production has always been that it took power to crack water apart. If that power comes from free sunlight, and doesn't need any fancy/expensive chemicals, the production value equation changes.

A pretty good commercial solar panel will be about 15% efficient. The really cheap poly-silicon stuff is in the 10% range. So 15% out of rust-tech looks pretty good. All the usual caveats about hydrogen apply to commercialization though...hydrogen embrittlment, seal issues on fittings, splodyness in crashes, etc.

Mid-morning open thread major, with a minor in Zimmerman trial.

Semi-interesting anectodal info:

I posted a comment at the local rag's most recent Zimmerman story  last night  detailing some of usual fucktardery (unsurprisingly, the 'narrative' is changing to 'some Americans may be disappointed in the verdict' and discussions about possible rioting).

Anyway, it's a disqus format and plenty of 'up votes' registered by this morning, no 'down votes', and all the comments  on the story  were either pro-Zimmerman or  at least  anti-fucktard media.

A couple of months ago I would be getting accused of teh RACISM!!11!! for pointing out inconvenient facts.

43 The important thing about solar-hydrogen power (now that I've actually clicked through the link) is that it (at least potentially) solves the energy storage problem. We can't store electricity, except in small amounts and at great cost. Mostly, it's "use it or lose it." Anything generated by a power plant has to be used or grounded. Now, for a power plant using coal, oil, or nuclear power to boil water, that's not really a big problem. As long as you've got people to make sure the plant is operating, it's generating power. For a solar plant, that's a big deal- when the sun isn't up it's not generating power, BUT there was probably a lot of power that it grounded during the day. So if, instead of sending electricity directly to the grid, we could use Solar to (basically) create Hydrogen for burning, Solar plants become (in essence) a combination of a hydrogen mine and a power plant (just like "fossil fuel plants") which basically boils water for steam and turns a turbine. I'm not really certain it's worth it; 15% energy absorption doesn't seem like much, especially since solar power is not particularly energy dense by the time it's filtered through our atmosphere to begin with. But it is kind of cool.

Obviously we're not talking about the energy itself, but its utility. And, as it turns out, this is about hydrogen power- using the sun and rust to split water into it's component H & 02, storing the hydrogen, and burning at a later time.

56 The last numbers I saw for solar power in residential usage showed that they were only an economically viable alternative in one location in the country.  That was parts of Southern CA near the coast and only on new construction.

Several factors made it so there.  Relative mild weather, high electricity cost, and lots of sunshine compared to most other parts of the country.  And that "viability" was only for an initial installation that qualified for both federal and State subsidies.  (those were only one time shot deals and at the time the predicted lifespan for the cells was only 10 years)

The South may be assumed to be a viable location, particularly parts of TX that get loads of sunshine.  The problem there is you need AC and residential solar simply will not power residential AC

Posted by: Vic at July 10, 2013 09:20 AM (lZvxr)

I don't know what you mean.  It is a system that pumps water through the ground to get the ambient temperature of 55 degrees and then raises it or lowers it to the desire temperature.  In a state like Oklahoma with huge AC needs, any system that takes temps starting at 55 degrees and goes up is eezy peezy.   It can be 110 outside and I keep it at 72 and don't worry about the bill.  When we had our highest temp of 117, the system did not even run that much.

No leaks on this house and it is a dual system--one for each floor.  The system at the other house developed a minor leak that caused it to lose vacuum, cost about $200 to get fixed and that included the mandatory $95 driving charge from Tulsa to the Lake Skiatook.

Posted by: CharlieBrown'sDildo at July 10, 2013 09:12 AM (eSrLn) China says hi. *clambers up on top of squirrel on awesome stepstool of awesomeness* You know what may infuriate me the most about the whole catastrophic anthropogenic global warming folderol? Besides that whole willful annihilation of the scientific process thing, I mean. It's that the fight about that drains away all the focus from actual environmental problems. Such as, say, China. Hell, let's discuss fracking. I'm in the fracking yay camp but I do want to know what the risks are. There has to some risk of ground water contamination so what's that risk and what steps should be taken to ameliorate that risk. Is strip mining the best way to mine coal or is there some other method available and what are the additional costs to that and what are the additional risks, particularly to the lives of the miners. We need batteries. Producing batteries generates some truly nasty byproducts. How do we dispose of that? Nuclear waste. We have to do something with it. What? None of that gets discussed in any type of rational manner because reason no longer has a seat at the table. Hell, look at wildfires. Even I know that you need to clear underbrush to prevent fires from spreading. But, nope, can't do that. Everything is all global warming all the time and the whole you deniery denier you thing makes someone like me, who is a conservationist at heart, want to go out and cook a spotted owl in baby seal fat over a tire fire.

Use rust panels to generate hydrogen, use it as an industrial power source to generate electricity with a gas turbine, which will run when the sun don' shine - better than direct conversion panels. Yep. Again, though, I'm not sure how economically feasible it is. How much hydrogen is created? How fast would you burn through what you make in a day? How expensive is it to store it? Considering the 2nd Law (since we already introduced the 1st into the discussion), if you convert 15% of terrestrial solar (not-very energy-dense) energy into hydrogen, and then burn that, how much more energy is lost? It's impossible to get 100% efficiency. Could you get 99%? 95%?

179 Nuclear waste should be utilized as a heat source for Stirling engines.  Blast that shit into space, and fuck the space hippies.

181 rickb223 - gotta love a company that sell barrel stove kits for the burning times. I have their small boxwood stove. I'd give my left nut for their Rancher or Railroad Pot Belly models.

What are we going to do with the multi-billion Yucca Mt.  boondoggle now that they've decided to just leave nuclear waste lying around?

191 They don't want to provide people with solutions, they want people to do penance for being human

And/or they've decided they don't want the middle class to have it because what's the point of being rich if idiots making $50k can have dishwashers and a fast car and the Internet.

194 And the health risks of nano-particles?

The tubes aren't particles per-se, they remain planted and are quite sturdy and not prone to busting into pieces.  Pure carbon is pretty bio-inert

197 Exactly what I said upthread. In their perfect little green world, the bright and beautiful people will live in peaceful park like utopias while the few worker bees still required will live in unheated and un-air conditioned hovels. Sherry, you going to see that new MATT DAMON!!! movie?

Ah, I was referring to nano-particles in general, not the carbon ones.

But.....there are significant health effects from seemingly benign chemicals in particular structures (asbestos), so I would tread carefully.

Well, the judge just committed reversible error. Z will win the appeal.

The judge is doing her best to insure a conviction...and it's a given that if GZ is convicted, he will not be allowed to remain out on bail during his appeal. The whole point of this charade is to put him in jail....general population, where nature will be allowed to take it's course.

202 Another pipe dream to get more money from the government tit.  Anyone seen where all this water's going to come from?  Most states are needing a lot more of it and don't have a lot of excess inventory laying around.

203 Re hydrogen storage: The best solution I know of is to use it to convert CO2 to liquid fuel - an unsolved problem, though a lot of capable people are working on it. FrontTowardLeft, #60: Interesting. The catch is where the energy comes from to make the aluminum. (Either fossil fuels, or hydroelectric, which doesn't scale.)

204 Interesting. The catch is where the energy comes from to make the aluminum. (Either fossil fuels, or hydroelectric, which doesn't scale.) Hence my TANSTAAFL. I was thinking more in terms of time/location shifting: Nuke plants in nobody's back yard or offshore Solar furnaces in the middle of uninhabitable deserts PA did comment @169 that he thinks capacitors will win this race. I defer to him.

Posted by: FRONT TOWARD LEFT at July 10, 2013 06:57 AM (V3kRK)

205 Affordable superconducting materials would be a game changer.  We could locate all the nuke plants in the barren wastes and ship their power where needed.

206 Dang at 202 above, You burn the hydrogen to generate electricity and water (H2O). Can unprocessed sea water be used in the process? If so then even better.

Posted by: huggy at July 10, 2013 08:33 AM (o00SF)

207 What isn't mentioned in the original link is what becomes of the oxygen that is also produced when water is electrolyzed on the rust substrate. One volume of O2 for each two of H2, curiously enough. As far as I can see, these cells would produce an explosive mixture of hydrogen and oxygen. That mixture would make a fine fuel for a gas turbine or reciprocating engine; might be kinda scary to supply as home heating fuel. Any effort to separate the two gases is going to involve further energy input to overcome entropy.

If this rust-electrolysis cell can be made to work reliably on an industrial scale, I envision "plants" with large acreages devoted to electrolysis chambers, plus old-fashioned gasometers to store the resultant gas at low pressure, and the stored gas being burned in turbines or reciprocating engines tuned to function well on it.

208 A company called Ambri is promising really cheap storage batteries that can hold grid-level amounts of power and will last for years of service. Instead of converting power to hydrogen, this simply would store the power for later use. He didn't give efficiency numbers, but I expect they are better than 15%. If this works as promised, this is going to be huge. This would allow the grid to become *much* more robust, smoothing out imbalances between production and consumption. Renewables like wind and solar would become much more practical and cost-effective. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=khf9UYg2ISw
