— Ace Ah, that was cheap, and so's this zero-content post.
ItÂ’s the highest job approval Governor Chris Christie has ever had. At 74 percent, itÂ’s the highest of any New Jersey Governor in the 17 years that Quinnipiac has been polling the state, and the highest of any Governor in the seven states that Quinnipiac polls now....
“If the Democrat was Andrew Cuomo or Hillary Clinton, Clinton beats him 49 percent to 45 percent — within the margin of error — and Cuomo trails him 54 percent to 36 percent in New Jersey,” Carroll explains.
I'll find something more important in a second.

Because he doesn't constantly spew venom towards the Left when we demand it. Because he realizes that the secret to success in politics (not just blue-state politics, but NATIONAL politics) is coming across as a reasonable "I can work with these guys across the aisle!" sort of guy.
So we call him a fat egomaniac, even though he's still probably the best hope we have for rehabilitating the GOP's image.
Attitudes like that are basically why we're doomed. We don't recognize that this guy out there is actually playing the game for conservatives far better than any other GOP politician in the country right now: because he's NOT instantly repelling swing voters and even center-lefties. Meanwhile we take that appeal as de facto proof that he's a traitor.

I consider myself a pragmatist when it comes to the conservative/moderate GOP divide. We live in a big country and regional differences exist. For example, a Massachusetts Republican cannot run as a Texas Republican and hope to win in Massachusetts. The same is true for many blue and purple state Republicans. That's why I'm generally leery of the Conservative Purity Brigade, which often fails to recognize political realities and draw such distinctions.
However, Christie crossed the Lugar Line with his 98% Cuomo comparison and is now virtually indistinguishable from a moderate Democrat by his own admission. And I initially had such high hopes for the guy, too.

1.) If you think Christie/Hurricane Sandy is the reason Mitt Romney lost OH, NV, WI, CO, FL, etc., you're living in a fantasy-land. Seriously.
2.) What the fuck was he supposed to say? He's the governor of a state that has been hit with the worst natural disaster it's experienced in over 150 years. Obama's there with the aid and the logistics as necessary (because it benefits him, no doubt). What is the guy supposed to do? Say "yeah, thanks but no thanks, you Democrat asshole." Or "no, actually Obama hasn't done shit for us, he's been less than useless."
I just don't get it. Christie's responsibility is and was to serve the people of his state. Had he put national partisan politics above the life-and-death needs of the people who he governs, that would have been far worse. Do I wish the timing had been different? Fuck yes I do. But you're dealing with a truly epic Black Swan disaster.
Moreover: the guy has governed way way more to the right, towards conservatism, than was ever thought possible in a state like New Jersey. And he's POPULAR because of it. You know how people like Limbaugh always keep screaming that "conservatism is actually popular everywhere it's honestly tried?" Well here's a guy who's damn near close to proving it, albeit by guile, craft, and canny political stage-management while working in hostile territory, and I'm being told I need to shut my brain down and ritually scream obscenities and epithets at him because he once said Obama did something good for his state. (Despite the fact that he's also said countless times, before and after, that he's a horribly incompetent chief executive when it comes to the key issues facing America, like the economy, the debt, etc.)

Did you ever once even bother to check the sourcing of that. No you did not. I'm assuming you read it from some site, and never realized that it wasn't Christie speaking at all. It was some Democrat saying "oh yeah, he totally said this to me the other day." A third-hand recollection of a conversation, possible (if not probably) inaccurate, and stripped of any context.
And furthermore, you don't seem to get the fact that it's common practice for people who are trying to reach across the aisle to say shit like "oh yeah, me and [that other guy] agree on so much stuff...see I'm not so bad!" It's fucking politics for chrissakes.
Meanwhile look at his actual record in New Jersey. Does that record look like the record of a guy who's actually just a carbon copy of Andrew Cuomo? Of course not. So we can go on the evidence of the way the guy has actually governed, in a state where Republicans are about as popular as cholera, and has fought tooth and nail for...or we can go by some bullshit garbled third-hand recollection that has been misunderstood and was probably just typical political "oh we're all alike deep down" gladhanding.

Most people are viewing Christie through the prism of a 2016 Presidential run, a possibility he hasn't exactly strained himself to deny.
Is some of the criticism from the Purity Brigade unfair and counterproductive? Yes, yes it is, especially considering the alternatives. We should be welcoming the help where we can find it.
However, there has to be a line somewhere with regards to a Presidential nominee. It's a fair criticism to suggest he's on the wrong side of it.

What we have here is a failure to communicate.
Chris Christie is our "best chance" to win in 2016. That might even be correct in a truly objective sense. The "powers that be" in the Democrat Party might actually let the Republicans win in 2016 so it looks like we really are a "two party system".
And seriously, just how much different will a President Christie be than say, a President Hillary Clinton? Of course, Christie will have "Republicans" in his cabinet, but again, the permanent bureaucracy in DC is Democrat. How much will he really be able to cut? Will he have some control over the Senate? Will the Republicans still control the House?
So many possibilities. For me, as for others, I feel like we have reached the end of the road in terms of politics in the known sense as they have existed in the US. Perhaps I am just slow (very possible) and this has been going on for a long time (truly possible). But the demographics and political mentality of much of the electorate (you only vote six times) persuades me to think that Christie only gets elected in 2016 if:
1) the country's economy truly tanks and there is so dumb realization that somehow Obama's policies just didn't work, no matter how hard he "tried".
2) The media doesn't turn on Christie like sharks, as they did to Maverick McCain, after he did years of trashing his own party, because they never did like him, they were just teasing him.
3) and somehow, the Republican base actually turns out to vote for another Northeast 'liberal' Republican, which seems kinda unlikely, but you never know.

I totally get the opposition to Christie as a presidential nominee. I tend to agree, but that's a discussion that doesn't need to take place for another two years.
Point is, he can still play a positive role in winning people over to Republican ideas in the meantime. He's a charismatic, popular guy. It's counterproductive to discard him.
