— Ace He says it's for health reasons, not political ones.
New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie secretly underwent lap-band stomach surgery to aggressively slim down for the sake of his wife and kids, he revealed to The Post last night. The Garden State governor agreed to the operation at the urging of family and friends after turning 50 last September.
He told The Post he was thinking of his four kids and how it was time to start improving his health when he decided to have the procedure.
“I’ve struggled with this issue for 20 years,” he said. “For me, this is about turning 50 and looking at my children and wanting to be there for them.”
He says he's already lost 40 pounds but it's a bit drop-in-the-bucket. I don't think anyone noticed he was losing weight. I haven't seen anyone asking "Is Christie losing weight?"
I suppose it may begin to show. He had the surgery on February 16.

He did look dangerously obese, I hope this works for him.
He only had the problem for the last 20 years...was he thin before that? He has a nice face and hair, if he were a normal weight he'd be a hottie.

I guess the exercise and diet is too hard? Doesn't matter he's still fat.
I imagine that being able to shed a bunch of weight right away will make exercising at bit easier - I imagine that doing even moderate exercise is difficult for the very fat.

I lost 30lbs using weightwatchers in a year. I've put much of it back on (I'm a stress eater and it's been really stressful these last few months.) But I'm supposing that if I started my control again I could lose.
Why should I risk surgery when good behavior has the same result. Plus I learn from it.

I met a girl on the walking trail who was morbidly obese. She went there faithfully three times a week and about six months later she had shed 100 pounds. She modified her diet too, and was in her twenties, so that may have aided the weight loss effort.

Good for him; I hope it works. It's tough to lose weight, and unhealthy not to.
As to all the speculation that it means he's running - "yawn". I think I've seen idle speculation about possible Republican candidates about 3 or 4 times, just this week, and it's only 2013. People would be speculating about a Christie run whether he did something like this or not.

Among the revelations—if “revelations” is even the proper word for something readily available on Google Books —McAuliffe offers about himself is that he almost missed the birth of his daughter to attend a bold-faced-name party in honor of then Washington Post gossip columnist (and current Daily Beast editor at large) Lloyd Grove; that in another instance he left his wife and their newborn son in the car on the way back from the hospital so that he could he attend a Democratic Party fundraiser; and that he was kicked out of the delivery room for another son because he was getting too loud with the anesthesiologist over President Clinton’s health-care reform plan.
On Wednesday, a Republican operative passed along yet another doozy, this one from a collection by the late Vanity Fair writer Marjorie Wiliams. In it, McAuliffe tells Williams, whom he considered a friend, that his wife doesn’t know how much money the couple has. “She’s got a great life. Listen, her credit cards are paid and all that. She knows I do very well. But she has no idea. Myself and my accountants are the only people who know.’”

Really - states that boast how prosperous and educated they are, and they have to go crying to the Feds because they didn't realize they were situated on the OCEAN? They weren't prepared for a storm that wasn't even a hurricane, and apparently didn't have INSURANCE? The whole thing is kind of ridiculous.

I have went from 225 to 207 in 10 weeks by just eating a couple small meals a day and drinking water mixed with OJ at 7 parts water to 1 one part OJ. I do some moderate exercise. I didn't lose anything last week so I need to kick up the excercise a little ,I think. The water and OJ seems to keep you from getting starving, it is supposed to keep your blood sugar stable.

It seems like it's taking the easy way out, but even with the lap band, you still have to eat responsibly to lose weight. It's a tool for weight loss, nothing more. You can cheat and defeat the purpose of the band - some people don't lose weight, and some gain it back.
My husband had the surgery a few years ago and has lost 100 lbs. Before the surgery, he would diet and drop 70 or 80 lbs, and then gain it back in a few months. He never had a problem losing the weight, just keeping it off. And each time he would gain more. The lap band was the tool he needed to keep the weight off.

The medical problem with lap band surgery is that it's not permanent. Most of my patients who have had the surgery loose a great deal of weight. Some have had to follow through with skin reductions to take up all the excess after loosing massive amounts of weight. The problem then begins all over again as their body starts to adapt to the new diet and the digestive tract "compensates" (IE: the stomach that was left expands to regrow missing tissue and accomodate the volume needs of the individual) followed by the patient compensating with increasing amounts of food.......and within 5 years they have bottomed out on their diet and are now gaining too much weight again.
You can argue with genetics all you want. DNA's gonna win sooner or later.

____________
That's BS. Weight loss is a very simple process. Eat fewer calories than your body uses. This doesn't have to be a radical change of life. Just east a little less. You can still eat a burger and fries, but get the small not the super size. You can still eat pizza. Just east 1 slice instead of 4. Don't eat desert after dinner.
I'm not saying it's easy to do this when you've spent a lifetime of eating desert and 4 slices and super sizing ever meal. But it is possible to do it. You just need some self control.

"Chris Christie" is an anagram for "Charlie Crist". If he wants a future in politics, he had better switch parties now.
As far as his pitch to "alienated conservatives", this conservative is so profoundly and permanently alienated on Christie that I make Grays from Zeta Reticuli look like your next door neighbor.
Not backing Christie for anything, ever, full stop, end of story. No money, no vote, nothing, nada. If Christie is the nominee in 2016 and if he's running against Clinton, I will vote faithfully and on schedule. For a third-party or write-in protest candidate.

The band is easy to cheat because 'slippery foods" like milkshakes, ice cream, doughnuts, potato chips etc go down easy with little chance of getting stuck.
Proteins and Complex Carbs are denser and tend to get stuck, resulting in what Banders call a PB, productive burp. So you are rewarded when you eat shit and punished when you eat nutritional foods.
Unless you have a huge amount of will power and a desire to work out daily, the band cannot work long term. If your weight is caused by a genetic issue there is no change to your body by the band that will help that, so you will regain. If your weight is caused by a failure to put the fork down, the band is not going magically cause you to develop will power.
It is a money making crock and ought to be considered malpractice
I'm not saying it's magic, and I'm not saying it's 100% effective, and I'm not saying it's not defeat-able, and I'm not saying there's no difference between eating salad and nachos.
The thing is -- people who are severely obese tend to eat A LOT of food. They also tend to hide their over-eating, so the normal-weight people around them don't often see them do it. Their quantity of food intake is astounding.
Of course there's a caloric difference between salad greens and cheese. I suppose you could theoretically eat nothing but liquid cheese and milkshakes, and that would circumvent the band's effectiveness. Sure. Obviously.
But most people tend to eat real food, even if it's crap. Oily breads, burgers, pizzas, fries, etc. Low fiber, high fat, but still more substantial than milkshakes.
If you physically prevent an extreme over-eater from eating more than 200 cubic centimeters of food at a time, it forces him to eat substantially less food. As in one-eighth of the usual amount.
That alone won't make you healthy. The micro-nutrient issue is still extremely important. But cutting one's food quantity down that much can turn a 400-pounder into a 200-pounder.

I can buy that -- you defeat the fuckers by making sure your body is in a semi-starvation mode where its not producing fat.
This is where people fuckup with radical low calorie diets like I did. You gotta ease out of that semi-starvation mode you're in once you hit where you want to be.
Start eating like crazy again, and starvation-mode is still there, kicks in and saves every spare calorie.
Transitioning off the radical diet is a several months long proposition, perhaps even as long as a year.

But seriously, I admit to being weak. I dropped weight through the white knuckle approach. I did Adkins. I did it all. I rode the yo-yo of weight loss. But three years in with the band I'm keeping it off. Why? Because dieting is easy to quit. It is easy to have a day of indulgence and wake up feeling guilty about it. It is easy to start building up the cycle of disgust at your bad eating day the previous day, and then embrace the 'fuck it all' and have another bad day. And then you start stacking up bad days and before you know it you've picked up the pounds.
Are it can be sneakier. You indulge at a special occasion. The diet slips a bit, and gradually you are sliding back but aren't really even aware of it. The pounds start accumulating and you wake up once a week or so vowing that 'this is the week' I get back on track.
Now with the band, each and every time I eat I am viscerally reminded that I DON'T WANT TO GO BACK TO BEING HEAVY. I have to chew carefully. I have to swallow and monitor what is going on. I screw up, I have to run to the bathroom and puke.
And it works for me. That inconvenience, that annoyance, that occasional pain works to remind me that I HAVE A PROBLEM WITH FOOD. It keeps me honest. And for that I'd do it all over again.
Those who can do without this tool, I salute you. For the judgmental bastards who wish to remove this option from people like us, go take a leap. I'll violently ignore you and remain quite happy with my choice.

Here's the most succinct explanation I've found (from the LiveStrong site): "Almost two-thirds of the human body is made up of water, and water acts as a natural appetite suppressant. It also helps to regulate your metabolism. In a study in "The Journal of Clinical Endocrinology and Metabolism" from 2003, metabolic rate increases by 30 percent after drinking 2 cups of water. When you become dehydrated, your metabolism slows down, affecting how your body burns fat. Your body mistakes thirst for hunger, which leads to increased calorie consumption. This can lead to stubborn fat gathering around your stomach, which is difficult to lose."

Sorry to say this, but I suspect he won't keep off the weight. The smaller stomach means one isn't able to hold much food there w/out feeling filling up fast or feeling sick to one's stomach. However, little by little, the compulsive eater starts increasing what he consumes, and the stomach stretches little by little into a larger "container" and the eater is right back to square one. You can tell that Christie *thinks* about food every minute the way an alcoholic thinks about a drink when he's w/out one. Stress makes things worse. He's actually gained weight since becoming governor. I think the best think for his weight is an unstressful job.

Comment #71:
I'm not making excuses for people with compulsions, but the recent ability to do DNA sequencing has shown there definitely are alleles among many that contribute to proclivities toward obesity. That doesn't mean one is doomed to be fat, but it does mean that some of these people have genes that are better suited to a diet different from that in our Western, agriculturally-based culture which is a diet heavy in carbohydrates. You also find that most people are totally ignorant about what is and what is not healthy for them in particular.
A good example is cereal. Most people think a morning breakfast of oats or wheat grains (yes, even the sugarless cereals) is healthy, but a large portion of the population doesn't understand they have a genetic profile that means their pancreas has to work too hard making insulin when such a "healthy" food hits the digestive tract. Thus, they not only risk developing type 2 diabetes, they risk getting fat w/out understanding why.
One doesn't have to pig out on pasta in order to get fat over the years, in other words.

It's a shame too, I used to really like Christie, but I now see his true colors, he's a McCain 2.0. I honestly believe though had he run in 2012, he would have beat Obama. All the reports were that the White House was scared shitless he'd jump in.
The only way I see a chance for Christie to be the nominee is if Rubio and Rand Paul go all in for Amnesty and some bill passes and Christie stakes out a position against it. Even then, it's a long shot, but hugging Obama will be viewed as less a sin than giving Amnesty to 20 million illegals.
