Chris Christie Reveals Stomach Surgery to Reduce Weight
— Ace

He says it's for health reasons, not political ones.

New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie secretly underwent lap-band stomach surgery to aggressively slim down for the sake of his wife and kids, he revealed to The Post last night.

The Garden State governor agreed to the operation at the urging of family and friends after turning 50 last September.

He told The Post he was thinking of his four kids and how it was time to start improving his health when he decided to have the procedure.

“I’ve struggled with this issue for 20 years,” he said. “For me, this is about turning 50 and looking at my children and wanting to be there for them.”

He says he's already lost 40 pounds but it's a bit drop-in-the-bucket. I don't think anyone noticed he was losing weight. I haven't seen anyone asking "Is Christie losing weight?"

I suppose it may begin to show. He had the surgery on February 16.

3 There's no reason why losing weight so that you'll be around for your children and spouse and in order to improve his image for a run for President are mutually exclusive goals.

25 I was never sure what to make of these weight-loss surgeries.  They seem to me to be a "pass" on responsibility.

I lost 30lbs using weightwatchers in a year.  I've put much of it back on (I'm a stress eater and it's been really stressful these last few months.) But I'm supposing that if I started my control again I could lose.

Why should I risk surgery when good behavior has the same result.  Plus I learn from it.

94 Over the past week, Republican operatives have been barely able to contain their glee as they email out select passages from What a Party!: My Life Among Democrats, Presidents, Candidates, Donors, Activists, Alligators, And Other Wild Animals, the memoir by Terry McAuliffe, former chairman of the Democratic National Committee, top fundraiser and ally of Bill and Hillary Clinton, and now the Democratic candidate for governor of Virginia.

Among the revelations—if “revelations” is even the proper word for something readily available on Google Books —McAuliffe offers about himself is that he almost missed the birth of his daughter to attend a bold-faced-name party in honor of then Washington Post gossip columnist (and current Daily Beast editor at large) Lloyd Grove; that in another instance he left his wife and their newborn son in the car on the way back from the hospital so that he could he attend a Democratic Party fundraiser; and that he was kicked out of the delivery room for another son because he was getting too loud with the anesthesiologist over President Clinton’s health-care reform plan.

On Wednesday, a Republican operative passed along yet another doozy, this one from a collection by the late Vanity Fair writer Marjorie Wiliams. In it, McAuliffe tells Williams, whom he considered a friend, that his wife doesn’t know how much money the couple has. “She’s got a great life. Listen, her credit cards are paid and all that. She knows I do very well. But she has no idea. Myself and my accountants are the only people who know.’”

Nope. He's a lawyer. There're always very lucrative jobs for former politicians who hold a law degree.

They weren't prepared for a storm that wasn't even a hurricane, and apparently didn't have INSURANCE? The whole thing is kind of ridiculous.

130 16 The band really does work. If you can't physically cram more than about a baseball-sized quantity of food down your gullet at one sitting, it doesn't much matter if that food is a salad or deep-fried cheese with a side of nachos. Posted by: Phinn at May 07, 2013 12:35 PM (oFH2D) Wrong. Carbs are 4 calories a gram, Protein also. Fat is 9 calories a gram. A gram of cheese is an inch cubed. A gram of lettuce? Substantially more. The band is easy to cheat because 'slippery foods" like milkshakes, ice cream, doughnuts, potato chips etc go down easy with little chance of getting stuck. Proteins and Complex Carbs are denser and tend to get stuck, resulting in what Banders call a PB, productive burp. So you are rewarded when you eat shit and punished when you eat nutritional foods. Unless you have a huge amount of will power and a desire to work out daily, the band cannot work long term. If your weight is caused by a genetic issue there is no change to your body by the band that will help that, so you will regain. If your weight is caused by a failure to put the fork down, the band is not going magically cause you to develop will power. It is a money making crock and ought to be considered malpractice

It seems like it's taking the easy way out, but even with the lap band, you still have to eat responsibly to lose weight.  It's a tool for weight loss, nothing more.  You can cheat and defeat the purpose of the band - some people don't lose weight, and some gain it back.

My husband had the surgery a few years ago and has lost 100 lbs.  Before the surgery, he would diet and drop 70 or 80 lbs, and then gain it back in a few months.  He never had a problem losing the weight, just keeping it off. And each time he would gain more.  The lap band was the tool he needed to keep the weight off.

The medical problem with lap band surgery is that it's not permanent. Most of my patients who have had the surgery loose a great deal of weight. Some have had to follow through with skin reductions to take up all the excess after loosing massive amounts of weight. The problem then begins all over again as their body starts to adapt to the new diet and the digestive tract "compensates" (IE: the stomach that was left expands to regrow missing tissue and accomodate the volume needs of the individual) followed by the patient compensating with increasing amounts of food.......and within 5 years they have bottomed out on their diet and are now gaining too much weight again.

You can argue with genetics all you want. DNA's gonna win sooner or later.

That's BS. Weight loss is a very simple process. Eat fewer calories than your body uses. This doesn't have to be a radical change of life. Just east a little less. You can still eat a burger and fries, but get the small not the super size. You can still eat pizza. Just east 1 slice instead of 4. Don't eat desert after dinner.

I'm not saying it's easy to do this when you've spent a lifetime of eating desert and 4 slices and super sizing ever meal. But it is possible to do it. You just need some self control.

No. Unapologetically, no. Fuck off. Go away. Now.

"Chris Christie" is an anagram for "Charlie Crist". If he wants a future in politics, he had better switch parties now.

As far as his pitch to "alienated conservatives", this conservative is so profoundly and permanently alienated on Christie that I make Grays from Zeta Reticuli look like your next door neighbor.

Not backing Christie for anything, ever, full stop, end of story. No money, no vote, nothing, nada. If Christie is the nominee in 2016 and if he's running against Clinton, I will vote faithfully and on schedule. For a third-party or write-in protest candidate.

Only 40 cm of intestine bypassed which the body compensates for within 2 yrs (again Roslin, though Rabkin has some nice articles on it) meaning the malabsorption is gone and he will get every calorie that he eats. And he gets the joys of having to maintain a vitamin regimen for life even after the rest of the surgery has failed. Oh and he won't be able to ever have any kind of NSAID again. RNY (or Ruined and Why?) is not the gold standard. It is better than the band but that's about it.

178 If you are a drinker, it is probably a good idea to avoid the lap band/gastric bypass. The shrinking of the stomach can change how you process alcohol, so the booze hits you much, much faster. It's like crack compared to cocaine, and the surgery can turn a moderate drinker into a raging alcoholic.

193 Okay found this in an old Jennifer Grifzfin post, but it is new to me. And, it sucks. _____________ The quick reaction force that was mobilized from the Libyan capital was made up of five Americans -- including Glen Doherty, who was on contract with the CIA’s Global Response Staff (or GRS), and two Delta Force special operators who were in Libya on a separate assignment. That was all the hastily rented plane could hold, according to the State Department Review Board. Stevens used the cellphone of Regional Security Officer 1, who is currently recovering at Walter Reed. Stevens was speaking with the Embassy in Tripoli at 9:50 p.m. from the safe room where he and RSO1 had retreated for safety. When the reaction team left Tripoli for Benghazi several hours after the attack began, they were told by one of the senior U.S. security officials at the Embassy that there would be “fast movers above Benghazi” when they arrived. “Fast movers” is a reference to military jets used to fly over a combat situation. It was a reference to F-18s, F-15s or F-16s that would have been flown in from Europe. The team that left for Benghazi assumed they would have air cover when they landed. Instead, they got held up at the Benghazi airport without transportation and did not arrive at the CIA Annex to help with the evacuation until 5 a.m. local time on Sept. 12 (more than seven hours after the attack had begun.) Air support never came. http://www.foxnews.com/politics/2013/01/22/fact s-and-questions-about-what-happened-in- benghazi/#ixzz2Scywcyqa

199 Wrong.

I'm not saying it's magic, and I'm not saying it's 100% effective, and I'm not saying it's not defeat-able, and I'm not saying there's no difference between eating salad and nachos.

The thing is -- people who are severely obese tend to eat A LOT of food.  They also tend to hide their over-eating, so the normal-weight people around them don't often see them do it.  Their quantity of food intake is astounding.

Of course there's a caloric difference between salad greens and cheese.  I suppose you could theoretically eat nothing but liquid cheese and milkshakes, and that would circumvent the band's effectiveness.  Sure.  Obviously.

But most people tend to eat real food, even if it's crap.  Oily breads, burgers, pizzas, fries, etc.  Low fiber, high fat, but still more substantial than milkshakes.

If you physically prevent an extreme over-eater from eating more than 200 cubic centimeters of food at a time, it forces him to eat substantially less food.  As in one-eighth of the usual amount.

That alone won't make you healthy.  The micro-nutrient issue is still extremely important.  But cutting one's food quantity down that much can turn a 400-pounder into a 200-pounder.

It is not addressed under Obama Care. Employers currently can opt out of covering bariatrics just like they can opt out of obstetric or psych coverage. If you are lucky enough to have an employer who doesn't opt out (Starbucks and Home Depot are two I know of), there is still the one and done attitude. Even if you have a crap band and only lose 100 of the 200 you need to lose, you are considered a success and not in need of revision. If the band breaks, slips, erodes into surrounding tissue, necrotizes part of your stomach, you might be eligible for revision, assuming there's enough left of your innards to revise you to something ( and yes, I know more than one person who has lost the entire stomach because of the band). Also if you regain significantly and can prove it wasn't your fault and have a really good lawyer you can sometimes revise. This is why the WLS community adage is Think twice, cut once. I can buy that -- you defeat the fuckers by making sure your body is in a semi-starvation mode where its not producing fat.

This is where people fuckup with radical low calorie diets like I did.  You gotta ease out of that semi-starvation mode you're in once you hit where you want to be.

Start eating like crazy again, and starvation-mode is still there, kicks in and saves every spare calorie.

Transitioning off the radical diet is a several months long proposition, perhaps even as long as a year.

Posted by: Phinn at May 07, 2013 01:14 PM (oFH2D) Until the stomach above the band (and the esophagus) stretch out to permit more food. Or until the patient asks for a lighter fill on the band which allows more food in--we had a bander once who would get completely unfilled before a vacation to be able to eat more and then over fill on return so that she would literally be a on a liquid diet. Glorified bingeing and purging. Or until the band has to be removed, they are only good for 6 years before needing replaced, which insurance will not cover. Nor does insurance cover the saline fills and unfills. Low fiber, high carb are squishy foods. Easy to eat, easy to gain weight on. And easy to get past a band. 6 oz of steak is a whole nother thing from 6 ounces of pizza. And steak is rarely on the menu for a bander. Once that band is gone or the restriction from it eases, he's back in the same boat he's in now. This is why in cases of Super Morbid obesity a weight loss surgery with a malabsorptive component is a necessity. The restriction takes the weight off, malabsorption keeps it off. That is why Allergan has to admit to an 80% failure rate with the band and they do.

229 I have a friend who had this. Lost a lot of weight because he could only eat a little bit. Had the extra skin surgically removed. Looked pretty darn good at around 200lbs. But- Never changed his eating habits. Even though he was eating a little bit, it was always something loaded with fat or sugar. Five sugar packets in his ice tea- that kind of thing. Sure enough. Next time I saw him roughly three years later. Most of the weight was back on. A lifetime of bad habits are hard to break. I've seen people lose as much weight as him and keep it off but they really must've had a come-to-Jesus-moment regarding food. They completely change their eating and exercise habits. Otherwise, I think it's like a drug addict. You may want them to get off drugs. They might even go along with whatever program you think they should try. But at the end of the day, they're not going to turn down that speedball or chocolate donut because that's what they really want.

Posted by: Staff at May 07, 2013 09:30 AM (vJ+mj)

230 I love the 'willpower' people. I really do. Good for you, glad you found what works. For me, the band did it. Call me weak. Call me pathetic. Yeah, I took the easy way out by having dangerous surgery and potential complications because I was just too damn lazy to try to put the fork down. Much easier to shell out $10k and climb up on a table to have a bunch of holes punched into me.

But seriously, I admit to being weak. I dropped weight through the white knuckle approach. I did Adkins. I did it all. I rode the yo-yo of weight loss. But three years in with the band I'm keeping it off.  Why? Because dieting is easy to quit. It is easy to have a day of indulgence and wake up feeling guilty about it. It is easy to start building up the cycle of disgust at your bad eating day the previous day, and then embrace the 'fuck it all' and have another bad day. And then you start stacking up bad days and before you know it you've picked up the pounds.

Are it can be sneakier. You indulge at a special occasion. The diet slips a bit, and gradually you are sliding back but aren't really even aware of it. The pounds start accumulating and you wake up once a week or so vowing that 'this is the week' I get back on track.

Now with the band, each and every time I eat I am viscerally reminded that I DON'T WANT TO GO BACK TO BEING HEAVY.  I have to chew carefully. I have to swallow and monitor what is going on. I screw up, I have to run to the bathroom and puke.

And it works for me. That inconvenience, that annoyance, that occasional pain works to remind me that I HAVE A PROBLEM WITH FOOD. It keeps me honest. And for that I'd do it all over again.

Those who can do without this tool, I salute you. For the judgmental bastards who wish to remove this option from people like us, go take a leap. I'll violently ignore you and remain quite happy with my choice.

BUT, vanity knows no bounds. Posted by: Soona at May 07, 2013 01:25 PM (tMEdS) It's called a Gastric Sleeve. The greater curvature of the stomach is removed leaving a much smaller, fully functional stomach. Mine held about 4 ounces at the time of surgery, probably 8 oz now at 3 years post op. It is actually less dangerous and less invasive than the band. Less dangerous in terms of post op complications. And mine wasn't 'Vanity'. It was health. It was survival. It was rebooting a broken metabolism so that the issues that have killed members of my family wouldn't get me. The fact that I look damn good at a size 4 is a perk. I wasn't terrible at a 24.

Posted by: Ragamuffin AKA Rags on a Rant today at May 07, 2013 09:32 AM (fzFF6)

232 #232:  It's not starvation that's the issue.  It's often dehydration.

Here's the most succinct explanation I've found (from the LiveStrong site):  "Almost two-thirds of the human body is made up of water, and water acts as a natural appetite suppressant. It also helps to regulate your metabolism. In a study in "The Journal of Clinical Endocrinology and Metabolism" from 2003, metabolic rate increases by 30 percent after drinking 2 cups of water. When you become dehydrated, your metabolism slows down, affecting how your body burns fat. Your body mistakes thirst for hunger, which leads to increased calorie consumption. This can lead to stubborn fat gathering around your stomach, which is difficult to lose."

I know, I can't imagine how anyone could possibly find things they might want to do with their time and money than being skinny.

Sweet Jesus, y'all sound like proggs.  How dare anyone enjoy any non-sexual pleasures you don't personally approve of?!  HOW DARE THEY?!

Democrats are playing Pick A Hand with the Republicans and they're playing along.

In one hand I've got Amnesty, in the other hand I've got Taxes. Pick one.

In one hand I've got No Guns, in the other hand I've got Syrian rebels. Pick one.

When someone plays Pick A Hand with you, you kick them in the balls, turn around, and walk away and say "Pick this, jerkoff."

238 #232: It's not starvation that's the issue.

This I believe wholheartedly !

Posted by: HeatherRadish™ needs to skip the beer and go straight to tequila at May 07, 2013 01:32 PM (ZKzrr) There are countries and cultures in the world where obesity is a sign of wealth. Because it means you get to eat. Here it tends to be a sign of poverty because the cheap foods are the over processed unhealthy foods. Kraft Mac and cheese is way cheaper than fresh veggies. Have you ever looked in those bags the grocery store puts together to donate to the food bank? High carb, high sodium garbage foods. Only the people of means (and people who build their budget to manage it) can shop the perimeter of the store where the healthy food is.

Indeed.  I was downing a couple of gallons of liquid a day (still am) and getting up to piss several times a night.

Some days I've seen an 8lb weight drop by morning due to overnight pissing.

Sorry to say this, but I suspect he won't keep off the weight.  The smaller stomach means one isn't able to hold much food there w/out feeling filling up fast or feeling sick to one's stomach.  However, little by little, the compulsive eater starts increasing what he consumes, and the stomach stretches little by little into a larger "container" and the eater is right back to square one.  You can tell that Christie *thinks* about food every minute the way an alcoholic thinks about a drink when he's w/out one.  Stress makes things worse.  He's actually gained weight since becoming governor.  I think the best think for his weight is an unstressful job.

242 I remember when Jim Fixx died. My Dad (the mortician) commented that he saw just as many young avid runners and sportsmen as he did young obesity deaths. I still think there is no use in sloth though. I am at least 50 pounds overweight and the Dr set me up for a stress test this Friday. Kind of scaring me actually.

243 There's no credible study that shows that drinking large amounts of water has any health benefits. Drink what you need for conditions, maybe a little more to help feel full.

Comment #71:

I'm not making excuses for people with compulsions, but the recent ability to do DNA sequencing has shown there definitely are alleles among many that contribute to proclivities toward obesity.  That doesn't mean one is doomed to be fat, but it does mean that some of these people have genes that are better suited to a diet different from that in our Western, agriculturally-based culture which is a  diet heavy in carbohydrates.  You also find that most people are totally ignorant about what is and what is not healthy for them in particular.

A good example is cereal.  Most people think a morning breakfast of oats or wheat grains (yes, even the sugarless cereals) is healthy, but a large portion of the population doesn't  understand they have a genetic profile that means their pancreas has to work too hard making insulin when such a "healthy" food hits the digestive tract.  Thus, they not only risk developing type 2 diabetes, they risk getting fat w/out understanding why.

One doesn't have to pig out on pasta in order to get fat over the years, in other words.

249 He'll probably cheat and stay fat.  A lot of people get that procedure and cheat their way right past it.  If he does lose the weight he needs to he could have a set of luggage made from all the excess skin he'll have hanging around.

Also, includes NSFW posture studies and moron-style historical information and analysis, with government-bashing that's pretty well backed up.

251 Yeah 40lbs in ~3mos off a guy isnt much, even without surgery. We have a local features reporter here (Pacific Islander) who had surgery in february and he's lost over 80lbs so far. Think he started at around 430lbs iirc.

252 With the coming healthcare disaster (not to mention the possibility of STHTF or TEOTWAWKI as the Prepper sites call it) I think it's in all of our best interests to get in the best possible shape right now and keep it that way. I was already in pretty good shape for a pushing-50 wingnut, but I've been kicking it up a notch, taking up kickboxing, doing tougher hikes, more workouts than usual. I consider it to be a part of prepping. An essential and often overlooked part.

257 It's clear he's running for 2016.  I don't think he understands how much he's ticked off the base, he probably lives in such a bubble he still thinks he's a conservative rock star because he yelled at some Union goons.

It's a shame too, I used to really like Christie, but I now see his true colors, he's a McCain 2.0.  I honestly believe though had he run in 2012, he would have beat Obama.  All the reports were that the White House was scared shitless he'd jump in.

The only way I see a chance for Christie to be the nominee is if Rubio and Rand Paul go all in for Amnesty and some bill passes and Christie stakes out a position against it.  Even then, it's a long shot, but hugging Obama will be viewed as less a sin than giving Amnesty to 20 million illegals.
