— Russ from Winterset Jonah Goldberg is one of my faves over at NRO, and he posted an article on Friday concerning the organizers of CPAC declining to invite Chris Christie to this year's event. If you haven't read it yet, you should. It's pretty well written.
If I might have a second, I'd like to explain why I disagree with his ultimate point in the article: the fact that Chris Christie will more than likely be reelected in a Blue State, making him a contender for the 2016 nomination and a must-have for the CPAC organizers.
First, Mr. Goldberg is crossing the streams here. And you know what happens when you cross the streams: The alternate universe "Bearded Spock" gets frozen in carbonite and then set adrift in the Phantom Zone by Londo Mollari and the Shadows. But, seriously. The gathering is called C-PAC, not R-PAC. Chris Christie's success as a registered Republican does not qualify him automatically as a "certified" conservative. I hate the Conservative Purity Purges as much as the next person.... but in this case? I think there is a valid point to be made.
Chris Christie is not just soft on the Second Amendment. He is downright hostile. Anyone who shares this significant position with both Nanny Bloomberg and President Please Stay Healthy So That SlingBlade Biden Doesn't Have to Take the Oath of Office is no friend of conservatives. And that's not just because I own guns* and feel personally threatened by a government that wants to take them away. Think about the great conservative figures of the past. Reagan? Goldwater? Coolidge? Do you think any of these men ever gave the American public a verbal pat on the head and a hearty "You'll Shoot Your Eye Out With That Thing"?
Politicians who don't trust law-abiding citizens to own guns do NOT see them as equal members of a democratic republic. To put it bluntly, they see them as serfs. Or children who need to be protected from themselves. And that sort of attitude will NEVER get you the nomination from a Republican Party that wants to keep Conservatives inside the Big Tent. NEVER. The way he treats the voters of New Jersey is the way he will treat the voters of America. Take it to the bank. The Second Amendment is not just one amendment in the Bill of Rights: It's the Founders' message to the citizens of America - "We Trust You". And if you fold on that amendment? You'll fold on all the others. Guaranteed.
If you don't agree with me that his hostility to civilian gun ownership (unless you're a member of the New Jersey Governor's Protective Detail, of course) is a total dealbreaker, then let's look at his recent actions on Hurricane Sandy relief. The guy who won in a Deep Blue State partly because he was willing to take on the unions and bluntly tell them "There's No Money Left" railed against Conservatives who wanted to trim pork from the relief bill. Pork. Not aid for Northeastern residents who lost everything in the storm, but pure goddamn pork like handouts for Alaskan fisheries.
Now don't get me wrong. I like Alaskan fisheries. Some of my favorite seafood dishes come from Alaskan fisheries. But what do Alaskan fisheries have to do with Hurricane Sandy? Not a goddamn thing. Cut the pork, pass the bill, and take up the issue of Alaskan fisheries immediately after the President signs the hurricane relief bill.
I'm not totally against an occasional need for hypocricy in politics, but I do draw the line and blatant goddamn goalpost moving. If waste & fraud are unacceptable in the New Jersey budget process, they're just as unacceptable in the National budget process.
And that's not even touching on his bending over & lubing up for Obamacare. That's a stand-alone post on it's own. Hell, my governor (Terry Branstad of Iowa) is castigated as a RiNO by the Conservative Purists out there, and he's done more to oppose Obamacare than Christie.
Now his embrace of Obama after the hurricane? That might have mixed results in the Big Tent. Republicans won't like his sticking a knife in his party's nominee, but some conservatives who were lukewarm about Romney (and Lord knows why they would feel THAT way) might not hold that against him.
Now just because I think that Chris Christie is not a conservative and should not carry the banner for our side in 2016 doesn't mean that it won't happen. McCain & Romney both happened without my blessing, and I wouldn't be the least goddamn bit surprised if The Stupid Party ran a "Christie/Bloomberg" ticket next time. Maybe they could use "Making the Hard Choices: Because You're Too Goddamn Stupid" as their motto?
Is he doing well as the Republican Governor of New Jersey? Sure. I'm not a New Jersey Republican. If they want to be treated as children who can't be trusted with hollow point ammunition, who am I to tell them otherwise? Keep electing the man if that works for you. No skin off my back. Hell, maybe he'll get their budget mess cleaned up. That alone would make him a Republican Hero. But please don't tell me that he's the answer to all our prayers on the national level. Because I know the difference between rain and a stream of piss. Especially when it's splashing on my head.
* - Sorry, I should have said that I USED to own guns. All my firearms were destroyed in a tragic waffle iron malfunction that happened last Groundhog Day.
That's my story.
And I'm sticking to it.

I almost forgot the biggest reason why I don't give a damn if Chris Christie gets invited to speak at CPAC 2013:
Russ from Winterset won't be at CPAC 2013.

He lost me with the hug and kiss on the beach and then buried it when his new BF's and his plan for recovery was threatened by budget restraints.
On top of that, he's either clueless as to how he's coming across to the people who are supposed to be part of his party or he's just another arrogant nanny stater who's even worse because apparently HE can't control himself. (Unlike Mike who I will give props to for maintaining himself well physically. Of course that could just all be genetics.)
Like I said. I'm voting for someone who actually LIVES their convictions and doesn't treat them like a time share. Visiting once every 2-4 years for a few months and then back to their real home in DC.
The letters after their name don't mean much anymore as the R's morph more into D's.

I saw this piece earlier, Russ. Amen, amen, I say to you. I like Jonah, too, but he's way off the reservation here. Christie is NOT the kind of Republican I want to hold up as an example for the rest of the country.
Levin has been ranting and raving about CPAC having been co-opted by the Establishment RINOs, and he's right. I think Palin agreed to speak long before the RINO contingent did. It'll be interesting to see what kind of crowd they get -- what with charging CONSERVATIVE bloggers $175 per internet hook up. Time to organize a new grassroots convention. Do it for Andrew.

From a media point of view, Christie is NE conservative enough to be labeled "MR CONSERVATIVE" in the primaries (to placate the rubes), but not liberal enough to actually garner any media support during the general. A Journolist Win Win scenario.

We have a traitor in the White House who is doing his damndest to destroy the country and whining about needing more of our money, while his butt-boy John F'n Kerry hands out $250 million to Egypt 'cause they're so freedom-loving and democratic and all. Does any "Republican" who has sucked on the public teat demand that this lunacy be stopped? Anyone????

Yes there is about 25-30 vote faction in the R-caucus that are "Christie" Republicans, that want to deliver all the government sugar at a discount price to, get this, buy votes. Boehner knows they are trying to beaver out the ground underneath his feet. Those dicks can swing the majority vote around to the Democrats when they want to.
Power corrupts, and the power to give stuff away corrupts absolutely.
And further, I doubt Christie lives until 2016. He's a prime candidate for a heart attack. But yes, the Bullshit media wants to pick him as the R-candidate.

Instead of turning the Party more stupid - why don't we give the country a more intelligent option?

Actually, he's not so so bad. At least he took on the unions and defeated never-to-be ex-con Jon "How do I kniow what we did with that billion?" Corzine. I'd sooner have him show up to polite applause and let him wonder why someone like Palin get an ovation.

If your stock in trade is a belief system, it helps to actually believe in something.

I'll say it again, if Christie does not veto this crazy fucking gun shit coming up, then he is FUCKING DONE.
Billy bob, yeah, don't go to walmart. That's where all the gunshop guys bought it up already and have marked it up.
But look at luckygunner, etc., even Bass Pro and Cabelas are getting more and more in.

Also disinvited from CPAC? Pamela Geller.... why??? because she called out their various connections with CAIR and those like them....
She can't even get a booth there.... even though the last few years her events there were standing room only.
CPAC is not about givng a place for Conservatives to talk amongst themselves... but for the Conservatives the SPONSORS like, to get a national platform. Its not about Conservatives having freedom to choose, but to promote a certain pre aprooved messege.

uh "yeah"...no if Obama was willing to speak at CPAC but we somehow didn't find him conservative enough....
Krispy Kreme is actually precisely the worst kind of Republican to go to CPAC because his ego would demand he heckle the audience giving the media a photoop and the chance to act as magnifier for their preferred GOP.
The Krispy Kaukus is using the threat of the media to thwart obstruction.

Capt. bAckfire and billy bob;
Indeed, the ammo manufacturers apparently were in a downtime over the winter and now are ramping up like crazy and are ramped. I would imagine the current inability to find ammo will be ironed out in the next several months.

On the contrary, remind the American people that socialism never works out. Ever. And if it has, when? Where?
And then remind them that this little venture into Marxism will fail within THEIR life times. And it will. Scare the FUCK outta them with the truth.
Start by stirring up the youth vote. Remind them of all the Gubmint goodies that are being stolen from their paychecks that they don't benefit from and will most likely NEVER benefit from: Social Security, Medicare, Medicaid, ObamaCare, unsustainable tuition increases and on and on....

Lacks a certain ethnic charm. We're really looking for something in a Edward James Olmos-ish Latin for the top of the 2016 ticket.
And a mannish Michelle Rodriguez type for VP.

This seems easier said than done. If the last four years didn't convince enough of them, perhaps our current stagnation is just good enough for them.

Who in the Republican Party was taking the media and Obama to task over all the shit over the last 4 years? No one.
The Left had free rein to "define" success.

I'm completely on board with the idea that Islamofascism is a serious threat and that Norquist is a squish in this area.
It's just the this message really, really needs to have its chief advocate be somebody other than Pam Geller.

Chris Christie is a typical NJ Republican. I know because I was active in the GOP when I lived there for twelve years. My fellow Republicans there didn't give a shit about anything that didn't happen outside the town boundaries.
In 1987 at a GOP committee meeting I moved that the organization go on record as supporting Judge Bork's nomination to the Supreme Court. It was voted down, not because there was no support for it, but because it was deemed "too political".
Imagine that. A Republican political organization not supporting its party's president at a critical point in his administration because it looked "too political".
I started edging away from my involvement then. I had better things to do with my time.
