Chris Christie Won't Be At CPAC This Year...and That Doesn't Bother Me.
— Russ from Winterset

Jonah Goldberg is one of my faves over at NRO, and he posted an article on Friday concerning the organizers of CPAC declining to invite Chris Christie to this year's event. If you haven't read it yet, you should. It's pretty well written.

If I might have a second, I'd like to explain why I disagree with his ultimate point in the article: the fact that Chris Christie will more than likely be reelected in a Blue State, making him a contender for the 2016 nomination and a must-have for the CPAC organizers.

First, Mr. Goldberg is crossing the streams here. And you know what happens when you cross the streams: The alternate universe "Bearded Spock" gets frozen in carbonite and then set adrift in the Phantom Zone by Londo Mollari and the Shadows. But, seriously. The gathering is called C-PAC, not R-PAC. Chris Christie's success as a registered Republican does not qualify him automatically as a "certified" conservative. I hate the Conservative Purity Purges as much as the next person.... but in this case? I think there is a valid point to be made.

Chris Christie is not just soft on the Second Amendment. He is downright hostile. Anyone who shares this significant position with both Nanny Bloomberg and President Please Stay Healthy So That SlingBlade Biden Doesn't Have to Take the Oath of Office is no friend of conservatives. And that's not just because I own guns* and feel personally threatened by a government that wants to take them away. Think about the great conservative figures of the past. Reagan? Goldwater? Coolidge? Do you think any of these men ever gave the American public a verbal pat on the head and a hearty "You'll Shoot Your Eye Out With That Thing"?

Politicians who don't trust law-abiding citizens to own guns do NOT see them as equal members of a democratic republic. To put it bluntly, they see them as serfs. Or children who need to be protected from themselves. And that sort of attitude will NEVER get you the nomination from a Republican Party that wants to keep Conservatives inside the Big Tent. NEVER. The way he treats the voters of New Jersey is the way he will treat the voters of America. Take it to the bank. The Second Amendment is not just one amendment in the Bill of Rights: It's the Founders' message to the citizens of America - "We Trust You". And if you fold on that amendment? You'll fold on all the others. Guaranteed.

If you don't agree with me that his hostility to civilian gun ownership (unless you're a member of the New Jersey Governor's Protective Detail, of course) is a total dealbreaker, then let's look at his recent actions on Hurricane Sandy relief. The guy who won in a Deep Blue State partly because he was willing to take on the unions and bluntly tell them "There's No Money Left" railed against Conservatives who wanted to trim pork from the relief bill. Pork. Not aid for Northeastern residents who lost everything in the storm, but pure goddamn pork like handouts for Alaskan fisheries.

Now don't get me wrong. I like Alaskan fisheries. Some of my favorite seafood dishes come from Alaskan fisheries. But what do Alaskan fisheries have to do with Hurricane Sandy? Not a goddamn thing. Cut the pork, pass the bill, and take up the issue of Alaskan fisheries immediately after the President signs the hurricane relief bill.

I'm not totally against an occasional need for hypocricy in politics, but I do draw the line and blatant goddamn goalpost moving. If waste & fraud are unacceptable in the New Jersey budget process, they're just as unacceptable in the National budget process.

And that's not even touching on his bending over & lubing up for Obamacare. That's a stand-alone post on it's own. Hell, my governor (Terry Branstad of Iowa) is castigated as a RiNO by the Conservative Purists out there, and he's done more to oppose Obamacare than Christie.

Now his embrace of Obama after the hurricane? That might have mixed results in the Big Tent. Republicans won't like his sticking a knife in his party's nominee, but some conservatives who were lukewarm about Romney (and Lord knows why they would feel THAT way) might not hold that against him.

Now just because I think that Chris Christie is not a conservative and should not carry the banner for our side in 2016 doesn't mean that it won't happen. McCain & Romney both happened without my blessing, and I wouldn't be the least goddamn bit surprised if The Stupid Party ran a "Christie/Bloomberg" ticket next time. Maybe they could use "Making the Hard Choices: Because You're Too Goddamn Stupid" as their motto?

Is he doing well as the Republican Governor of New Jersey? Sure. I'm not a New Jersey Republican. If they want to be treated as children who can't be trusted with hollow point ammunition, who am I to tell them otherwise? Keep electing the man if that works for you. No skin off my back. Hell, maybe he'll get their budget mess cleaned up. That alone would make him a Republican Hero. But please don't tell me that he's the answer to all our prayers on the national level. Because I know the difference between rain and a stream of piss. Especially when it's splashing on my head.

* - Sorry, I should have said that I USED to own guns. All my firearms were destroyed in a tragic waffle iron malfunction that happened last Groundhog Day.

That's my story.

And I'm sticking to it.

13 Christie's the Media's choice. They can puff him up with his anti unionism and budget restraint to destroy any contenders and then destroy him with his anti unionism and budget restraint to blow him away in the national.

He lost me with the hug and kiss on the beach and then buried it when his new BF's and his plan for recovery was threatened by budget restraints.

On top of that, he's either clueless as to how he's coming across to the people who are supposed to be part of his party or he's just another arrogant nanny stater who's even worse because apparently HE can't control himself. (Unlike Mike who I will give props to for maintaining himself well physically. Of course that could just all be genetics.)

Like I said. I'm voting for someone who actually LIVES their convictions and doesn't treat them like a time share. Visiting once every 2-4 years for a few months and then back to their real home in DC.

The letters after their name don't mean much anymore as the R's morph more into D's.

I saw this piece earlier, Russ.  Amen, amen, I say to you.  I like Jonah, too, but he's way off the reservation here.  Christie is NOT the kind of Republican I want to hold up as an example for the rest of the country.

Levin has been ranting and raving about CPAC having been co-opted by the Establishment RINOs, and he's right.  I think Palin agreed to speak long before the RINO contingent did.  It'll be interesting to see what kind of crowd they get -- what with charging CONSERVATIVE bloggers $175 per internet hook up.  Time to organize a new grassroots convention.  Do it for Andrew.

24 I think part of Christie's appeal was that for a brief interval, there was a nominal Republican public figure that was not afraid to use sarcasm and attack unions.  What we later found out was that sarcasm is not a set of principles, and an occasional attack on a union doesn't mean that one really believes in any aspect of conservatism.

From a media point of view, Christie is NE conservative enough to be labeled "MR CONSERVATIVE" in the primaries (to placate the rubes), but not liberal enough to actually garner any media support during the general.  A Journolist Win Win scenario.

45 Somehow, the question of who Jonah Goldberg is fapping over today and who is/isn't/might be a Republican seems meaningless to me.

The real issue is that not a single friggin' Republican has stood up to Choom Boy. Not in Congress, not outside the self-entitled, free-spending sewer that is Washington.

We have a traitor in the White House who is doing his damndest to destroy the country and whining about needing more of our money, while his butt-boy John F'n Kerry hands out $250 million to Egypt 'cause they're so freedom-loving and democratic and all. Does any "Republican" who has sucked on the public teat demand that this lunacy be stopped? Anyone????

Christie, like Boner and Bitch McConnell, is a freekin' eunuch. We have wasted too much time listening to -- and voting for -- eunuchs.

P.S. Goldberg is one, too.

Yes there is about 25-30 vote faction in the R-caucus that are "Christie" Republicans,  that want to deliver all the government sugar at a discount price to, get this, buy votes.  Boehner knows they are trying to beaver out the ground underneath his feet.  Those dicks can swing the majority vote around to the Democrats when they want to.

Point of Order:

Grover Norquist is a fucking muslim, his wife is a fucking muslim, and these clowns coddle up not to the good guy, western muslims who care about individual rights, but hang out with TERRORIST FUCKING MUSLIMS???

I mean, how far down the rabbit hole have we ALREADY GONE????

Fuck norquist then.  Fuck his tax pledge.

And finally, we will see whether or not Chris Christie has figured out his "moment."  If he vetoes all of these new anti-gun laws, then he is definitely going for 2016.  If he pocket vetoes them or signs them into law,

THEN HE IS FUCKING DONE NATIONALLY.  Period.  End of story.  And a GOP that would allow Christie to win the national nomination is not a GOP I am a part of or support any longer.

Here's an idea: why don't we appeal to the VAST MAJORITY OF AMERICANS who don't vote because they see no current Party that presents a clear contrast to these fucking Marxists?

Instead of turning the Party more stupid - why don't we give the country a more intelligent option?

But instead, the current braintrust in the GOP tell us the Party must get more stupid if it wants to "win" elections. Yeah. Because nothing spells "Success" like a Pyrrhic Victory! Dumb-asses.

126 I propose that there are two broad arguments. First, that running conservative candidates cannot win elections; that the only way to win elections is to be moderately less left-wing than Democrats. The other argument is that the only way to win elections is to run candidates distinctly different, and distinctly more right-wing than Democrats. The former, if correct, guarantees a steady slide to collectivism. The latter, if correct, guarantees a reversal of direction, but promises to be more difficult to sell to voters according to the adherents of the former theory. Toss in distinctions between social and fiscal issues, and the division between the two points of view become more complex. Hell if I know who is right. But I know I can't defend Christie begging for federal pork while he also cuts NJ pork. Not logically. I also will never persuade someone who thinks gubmint should pay for his medicine and doctor visits that he should just ask for a little less money but yes, there must be a safety net. Just a smaller one.

158 Who in the Republican Party was taking the media and Obama to task over all the shit over the last 4 years? No one.The Left had free rein to "define" success. Quite so.

160 Chris Christie's gut is pretty easy to understand unless you are terrified by the paralyzing fear that he might sit on George W. Bush. This is called the "George Lucas effect." The only cure for this malady is public suicide. But I digress.

I'm completely on board with the idea that Islamofascism is a serious threat and that Norquist is a squish in this area.

It's just the this message really, really needs to have its chief advocate be somebody other than Pam Geller.

165 There were people taking barky to task, they just never got coverage. Do the names West and Palin ring a bell? Of course the media and RINOS don't like them so they don't count. Has Alan West been invited to CPAC? That might be a "tell" as to whether an anti islam/shari'a stance has anything to do with the snub of PG.

I just go to church and break bread with the saints. God has promised that good will triumph over evil. You can read about it in the book of Revelation.

171 i think Goldberg can be a clever writer and i'm not down on Christie, but unfortunately too much of Goldberg's writing is about defining the boundaries of Republican thought depending on what's acceptable at the time, and not so much putting forward a cogent conservative philosophy. which is OK, just that it naturally makes you flip from one position to another depending on what the GOP "has to do" on a given day.

176 Jonah is an elitist pr*ck. I bet he went to Harvard. I had words with him on Twitter. I was shocked he answered me. I won because I was meaner and drunk. Now deleted. Goldberg: Jack Cashill's work on Obama book banned from NRO. Cashill didn't go to Harvard. Goldberg: Woodward wasn't threatened. Thanks, Jonah. CPAC should include GoGays or I'm confusing him with others?

Chris Christie is a typical NJ Republican.  I know because I was active in the GOP when I lived there for twelve years.  My fellow Republicans there didn't give a shit about anything that didn't happen outside the town boundaries.

In 1987 at a GOP committee meeting I moved that the organization go on record as supporting Judge Bork's nomination to the Supreme Court.  It was voted down, not because there was no support for it, but because it was deemed "too political".

Imagine that.  A Republican political organization not supporting its party's president at a critical point in his administration because it looked "too political".

I started edging away from my involvement then.  I had better things to do with my time.

185 Chris Christie disgusts me on many issues, but surely the one that galls me the most is his stubborn, pugnacious, pig-headed loyalty to various Islamist scum: http://tinyurl.com/655fhwg ...and his outrageous attempts to block the NYPD counterterrorism unit -- one of the best CTU's in the land -- from doing their job.

Posted by: Kathy from Kansas at March 03, 2013 07:33 PM (F0o5k)

186 Well said. I'm glad Christie is Gov. of NJ, but he doesn't belong at CPAC.
