Question for the Horde:

My wife and I, soon to celebrate our 21st anniversary, have decided to get an HD 3D tv. There are two basic types, that I can tell, one is active, and requires battery powered LCD shutter glasses, (which also tend to be expensive, and aren't guaranteed to work across brands). The other uses the same system that theaters use, and require simple polarized glasses.

Is there a big difference in picture quality between these two systems?

Smitten      teen girls stir up #FreeJahar mania for Boston     Marathon bombings suspect

NY Post: http://tiny.cc/2ez0ww

This love is terrifying.

Thousands of American teen girls are crushing on Boston Marathon bomber Dzhokhar “Jahar” Tsarnaev, 19 — and leading a social-media movement to exonerate him.

The swooning teens will not accept allegations that the bushy-haired college kid — whom they refer to by his nickname, “Jahar” — and his brother, Tamerlan, 26, killed three and maimed hundreds by setting off bombs at the April 15 race and killed an MIT police officer during the ensuing manhunt.

While some scrawl the hashtag “#FreeJahar” on their hands with markers, an 18-year-old in Topeka, Kansas, is going to the extreme — she wants the Dzhokhar’s words inked on her arm forever...

And people wonder why I     say I'm borderline misogynist.    Actually, I'm beginning to wonder why, too.       I think I     crossed over that border   months ago.

WRT the IRS disclosures: Nobody is pressing any agency or admin toadie about the admin going after businesses [yet?] such as Gibson. We need the pattern well and truly established in the public mind.

I agree.  One of the reasons the impeachment of Clinton was unsuccessful was that Republicans couldn't articulate what was "so wrong" about what he'd done.  We had one group (of Republicans) talking about "sex in the oval office," which played in with the Democrats' "It's just about sex!" storyline.  Together those drowned out the "perjury, obstruction of justice, and, oh yeah, credible accusations of rape" voices.

I don't even really care if TFG gets impeached (I'd love it, though, and I think he deserves it more than any president in history), but I want so thoroughly to destroy Democrats' credibility with the LIVs that we basically don't even have to run against them for the next 12 years.  To do that, we have to make sure every piece of filth and dirty laundry gets aired.

The People need to know about Benghazi.  They need to know that it is a direct result of Democrat incompetence when it comes to foreign affairs.  They need to know that 4 Americans are dead because Democrats couldn't be bothered to pay attention or listen to their people on the ground.  They need to know that the gross negligence and incompetence was covered up by the Democrat-Media complex for the specific purpose of winning the November election- 4 families left without even the least bit of consideration from the President or Secretary of State just because this Admin thought (okay, knew) that admitting it was a failure on their part would damage them politically.

The People need to know about Solyndra and Fisker and Tesla and all the other "green-energy" corruption.  They need to know that this president not only puts his donors and "friends" first, but that he will sacrifice the good of the country for them.  They need to know that GWB turned down those same companies repeatedly, because he knew they could never be solvent.  They need to know that TFG approved the loans not for any ecnomic benefit for the country, but for his own political gain.

The People need to know about the prosecution against Gibson and others.  They need to know that this president will attempt to destroy even private citizens who simply disagree with him in publich.

And the People need to know about the IRS being used as a weapon against his political enemies.  They need to know that he will use the full weight of the US Government to destroy the lives of those who disagree with him.

And if we can get that message out to the people, the Democrats will begin urging to impeach him so fast that our heads will spin.  They'd rather throw him under the bus (enough face-time and money to Jesse Jackson and Al Sharpton will be enough to ensure their cooperation) than see their own prospects so thoroughly destroyed.

So did we like the movie or not?

It has potential.

Speaking of movies- if you haven't seen "Immortals"... don't.  I'm the kind of guy who's happy if an action flick has good action, a few good one-liners, and some t-n-a (optional, but highly preferred).  This movie didn't even do those well.

I just looked out the window and the rocket surgeons who are painting have now started up a small charcoal grill. Because these are exactly the people I want using fire. I see no possible way for this to end badly.

Ah.  Yes.   So    these   brain    scientists see no problem with    employing    an open flame near     their      oh-so-inviting paint cans?

These are the kind of geniuses we need in Washington.

And WTH are they grilling?          Have they got some   "brauts sizzling away for lunch?       Or have they always wanted to see if     all those stories about   "suicide by charcoal grill"   from Japan are really true?   I mean,    WTH?

So we have an all staff meeting last week, a couple scrunts from Columbia University to give a presentation on the wonders of 'infomatics', ie, commie health care. Psycho libs really letting their masks slip. Obammycare is great you see, because now everyone's medical records will be digitized and at the fingertips of tens of thousands of bureaucrats, WHETHER YOU LIKE IT OR NOT, PEONS! Yes, sans the peons part, that was actually as part of the presentation.

It's all good though you see, there are like fines and stuff that will be assessed if you misuse this info. They mentioned how you see celebrities always have their medical procedures exposed, and this makes it both vastly easier and way harder to track down the culprit, but that's great, or something. As long as you don't divulge info on someone politically important, they'll probably just let it slide.

But man, if you're one of them evil insurance companies, watch out! For example, one company digitized tens of thousands of records. A computer was stolen and all that private info with it. Now, the company had followed all the guidelines for protecting the data, but when the guberment investigated, they decided the company didn't do enough, so they fined them millions and helped open up the class action lawsuit floodgates to sue that evil company out of business! Hoorah!

By the end of the presentation, it was clear that glorious Obamacare provides for whole lot of new onerous paperwork, bureaucratic hurdles, and new avenues for lawyers to sue, but not a damn minute on actual medical care. And the scrunts had the nerve to stand there in front of hundreds of people bitching about Republicans in Congress not giving them even more money to implement it, but not to worry, they're determined to fuck us, funding or no.

166 According to the McRINO brigade these people deserve U.S. military support. Via Times of Israel: A video uploaded to LiveLeak on Sunday claimed to show a Syrian rebel dismembering a dead Syrian soldier and eating the man’s heart. The authenticity of the video could not be independently confirmed. A user by the name of El Ghoul101 — “ghoul” was a loanword from Arabic for a mythical cannibalistic grave robber — posted the video on Sunday with the title “Cannibal Rebel Eats Heart of Syrian Soldier.” The video bore the stamp “Syrian Truth,” a pro-Assad regime grass-roots organization. The knife-wielding subject of the video says while cutting away at the corpse, “We swear to God that we will eat your hearts and livers, you soldiers of Bashar the dog.” “We are the heroes of Baba Amr,” he says, referring to the Homs neighborhood that has been a rebel stronghold since the beginning of the Syrian civil war two years ago. Assad is looking better and better every day

At the battle of Yarmuk in 636, the battle in which the Byzantine Empire  lost the Holy Land to the Arabs, one of the Arab women walked out onto the battlefield and ate the liver of one of the Byzantine soldiers, IIRC. Ate something, anyhow. I suspect that there may be a connection, and the eating of corpses may be intended to send a message - it is a pretty well-known story among the Arabs, I believe.

263   I will speak my ordeal  over the week-end, My mother had bought a dollhouse for my oldest sister that Her father had put together  (a kit) anyway gorgeous and in the process of building added many beautiful things over the years.

soo when my sister died I was given  the dollhouse (because i had wanted to play with it for so many years and i was only allowed to touch it if it was guarded by Her).

I  had cleaned it up after many years  in the attic and in preparation of giving it to the oldest grandaughter.
so i had it on the living room table  while making new lace linens for the canopies on  one of the  fabulous beds.

what do the Boy baby terrorists of dollhouse s do. They break the legs off of the whole dining room set and break the chandelier off the ceiling in two of the rooms. while i was making  dinner!

I know it is my fault i should have known better than to have it assessable and my back turned.

still  it  brought tears to my eyes.

277 WRONG! This went all the way to the top of the agency who knew for at least two years this was going on and denied it was happening to Congress. Via TPM: White House press secretary Jay Carney said in a statement Monday that President Barack Obama is “concerned” that a “small number of Internal Revenue Service employees may have” inappropriately singled out conservative groups for further review during the 2012 election and that he expects “appropriate steps” will be taken should an independent review find that rules were broken. [...] “Based on recent media reports, he is concerned that the conduct of a small number of Internal Revenue Service employees may have fallen short of that standard. We understand that the matter is currently under review by the Inspector General. If the Inspector General finds that there were any rules broken or that conduct of government officials did not meet the standards required of them, the President expects that swift and appropriate steps will be taken to address any misconduct.” with obama the buck never stops there

Any 3d movies should work with either 3d TV technology just fine.

IMO, passive is preferable for less finickyness.  Active requires synchronization between TV and the glasses (done passively with a dongle, but sometimes you need to adjust its placement), and you need batteries for the glasses.   Passive, you just put your glasses on and no further hassle.

Found a cnet article that goes into the picture quality trade offs:
http://preview.tinyurl.com/bv68fkj

Basically, passive is lower resolution, active has lower brightness.

304 251 1) $10/hour employees are more than likely the ones entering all of that data in the first place; and Everyone's eligibility/enrollment feeds are automated...thankfully nobody hand-enters any of this for the most part. Even though employers weren't a covered entity under HIPAA, their TPAs and what-not were. 2) I don't care how secure your network is. Computers will break, servers will fry, network connectivity will flilcker,"new guys" in the IT department will forget some important protocol... These things are going to happen, and data leaks are going to be the result. There is no way to get around that. And of course, hackers gonna hack. That's the beauty of someone - say "Micheal Jackson" - being entered into the system as "Fred Dzherhensky". When you limit the number of employees that actually know the substitution was made to 2-3 (talking literally a couple execs and a single developer), the chances of anything like this getting leaked fall pretty low. Oh, someone found out? We need to waterboard the following three people...etc.

311 That's the beauty of someone - say "Micheal Jackson" - being entered into the system as "Fred Dzherhensky". When you limit the number of employees that actually know the substitution was made to 2-3 (talking literally a couple execs and a single developer), the chances of anything like this getting leaked fall pretty low. Oh, someone found out? We need to waterboard the following three people...etc.

Had a coworker who never outgrew the grab and play phase.  Decided to display some of my craft skills by bringing in a kit I had built and won a model contest award with.  Big mistake.  Had to take care of a problem, so left office.  Come back to find the idiot with his paws on the kit.  I saw red since he had managed to break parts off it.  Lucky I was not in a homicidal mood that instant so he could return in one piece to his wife and son they had named Jean-Luc.  Never brought anything nice to work ever again.

326 1) $10/hour employees are more than likely the ones entering all of that data in the first place; and Everyone's eligibility/enrollment feeds are automated...thankfully nobody hand-enters any of this for the most part. Even though employers weren't a covered entity under HIPAA, their TPAs and what-not were. Someone, somewhere typed that information in at some point. That person was probably not that highly paid. I'm sorry, but whenever I hear the whole "oh this part is automated so that's not a worry" I laugh because at some point some person sat down and typed that information in. Just because that information then gets automated out doesn't mean there was never human entry. As far as famous people having their information leaked, that's not the main concern. It's about what happens when someone suddenly becomes famous. Joe The Plumber anyone? Hell, anyone running for school board better watch out. Automation does nothing but give human nature more information with which to play.

330 When I was a kid I built a very elaborate Corvette model car kit.  Quite detailed right down to having individual spark plug wires.

One of my "friends" at the time took my X-acto and sliced up all the fine detail when I was in the bathroom taking a dump.  No reason, he just couldn't stand someone else having something nice, and he was never inclined to put in the work needed to create anything nice.

We drifted apart soon after that.  Years later just after high school, he started out mugging, then graduated to murder.  He'll die in the NY State prison system.

331 292--- Willow, this is an excellent opportunity for the little savages to learn something about repair work, depending on their age and if you have someone handy nearby. Mr. DeVille used to torture the boys by making them 'help.' They had to listen to his insufferable lectures about the right way to do things, the chemistry of glue, and the proper use of tools. Then they had to spend interminable periods holding things while the glue set, etc., etc. Even if an item was irretrievably ruined and he knew it, he'd insist on 'fixing it' just to make them miserable. Cruel and unusual, but they learned a lot.

332 And if we can get that message out to the people, the Democrats will begin urging to impeach him so fast that our heads will spin. Don't Bogart, AllenG. Give me some of whatever you're having. No Democratic Party politician would or will ever publicly urge the impeachment of Barack Obama under any circumstances. Some because they're true believers, others because political suicide is usually a bad idea.

President Obama will likely not be perceived as a failure whatever the reality of his record. His glaringly massive shortcomings as a leader and as a man will be obscured under a cloud of hagiographic veneration for decades to come. Few will ever know the truth.

349 Plain Elmers white glue dries clear and is soft enough that any squeeze-out globs can be trimmed off with an X-acto.  The amber/yellow wood glues are a different animal and dry pretty hard.

The "gel" type crazy glues can work OK on wood, but don't give you a lot of time for positioning.

With any busted wood project, the key thing is to collect ALL the pieces, then put the jigsaw puzzle together DRY first and establish what fits into what.  Each break will be unique.

Well some of it may be their fault.

The lack of compatibility between the two major vendors (Cener and EPIC) is a major fail.  In my town it's split about 50/50 between who uses what.  The problem is that the major hospital attached to my PCP is not where I'm most likely to be taken in case of an actual emergency given the frequency swarm of my location around town.

This leads to a moronic manual transcribing which I think accounts for at least some of these errors (certainly not all obviously.)

Of course this is what happens when you tweak the market to force a technology that's still at least partially in development into the main stream.  Had the market performed properly I think you'd have at least seen a de facto standard emerge. (Similar to PDF and DOC.)

At the very least if you're going to be stupid and force EHR on people, mandate some sort of standard as well.

379 I don't think you can buy a car anymore w/o power windows and locks. Besides, I have had the manual window mechanisms break more often that the motorized ones.

But the benefit of manual is that you can jury rig a fix pretty easily.

My car is manual windows and locks, and it's a 2007.   Don't know about anything more recent than that, though.

My car has no power locks and I wish it did.  When friends get stuff out of my back seat they often forget to lock it, and it's just far enough away that I can't quite reach it from the drivers seat.  Meaning I have to get out to take care of it.  (I'm not a fan of driving around parts of this town with an unlocked door.)

------

A neighbor recently bought a '69 Corvette as a project car. When he got it home, his 16 year-old daughter, while sitting in the passenger seat, pointed at the window-winder and said, "What's that?"

387 The last car I had with manual windows and locks was a 1979 Mustang.  I had to go to the junkyard twice to get the window mechanism for the left door.

that actually reminds me, speaking of broken winders, anyone else's seem to slip over time?  I have tighten my windows about every 2 weeks or so.  It's not awful just bad enough I can barely hear it (no water ever gets in, which is surprising considering the rain level 'round here lately.)

390 The motor operates a cantilever lifting device.  I suppose once it gets worn it it can slip.  I have never had that problem though.

Oh these are manual crank windows.

The 2007 Chevo aveo didn't even come with a tape deck (luckily I do have a radio!)

AC was an option (thankfully the one I bought used had it.)

The manual one in 1979 that I changed had the same cantilever lifting device, only it had a half circle type gear that the crank turned to operate the cantilever device that lifted it.
