Chris Matthews: The Passing of Nelson Mandela Reminds Us That South Africa's Apartheid Government Leaders Were More Reasonable and Empathetic Than the Republican Party
— Ace

Matthews hailed Al Sharpton as having uttered the smartest thing he'd heard in five years.

Still throbbingly erect from his interview with Barack Obama (which I'm writing about, but it's a longer post), Chris Matthews was still in something of a Sex High when he spoke to MSNBC Democratic Partisan Alex Wagner.

Matthews acknowledged a point that Rev. Al Sharpton had made earlier in this broadcast where he noted that the last apartheid president, F.W. de Klerk, recognized after MandelaÂ’s release from prison that he would be ascendant and brought him into his government to facilitate that transition.

“I haven’t heard anything as smart as what I heard Reverend Sharpton say a moment go in five years,” Matthews said. “The difference between the way F.W. de Klerk handled the need for change and the election – democratic election of Nelson Mandela – legitimate election, he was never truly elected – for him to recognize his role in history which was to be a patriot at that point is so different than the way [Senate Minority Leader] Mitch McConnell handled the election of Obama.”

“They were willing, the McConnell people onto the far right, were willing to destroy the country in order to destroy Obama,” Matthews insisted. “Whereas, to succeed in a country he loved, F.W. de Klerk was willing to see it transformed to black rule so it could be done successfully so he could have his country have a better future.”

“The loss of Mandela and what his history is about and the key statement of why this has been so poisonous the last five years,” he concluded. “We have real people in this country with real power and status who have used that status of power to hurt the country so they could hurt the president.”

“That’s the most damming assessment I’ve heard and, I think, the truest,” Matthews lamented.

Sure why not.

One of the interesting things to observe about the left is that it delegitimizes any opposition to its rule.

McConnell being a right of center politician is opposed to moving the country in the far left direction Obama wants. This is normal politics. But to the left this isn't a case of mere disagreement - it is a moral deficit if not a crime.

It never ceases to amaze me how desperately the left clings (bitterly, one might say) to McConnell's declaration that he wanted to make Obama a one-term president as prima facie evidence of malevolence and / or racism.  Look, this is Politics 101 - if someone whose guiding principles are opposed to your own achieves a position of power, you're derelict in your duty to your party, your constituents and your country if you don't oppose him.  That's the essence of representative democracy, for fuck's sake!

And, of course, when you confront one of these idiots with the eight years of near- and outright treason the left engaged in with Bush (including four years of "selected, not elected!") they plug their ears and yell imprecations about Halliburton or Diebold.

That is so ass backward, it hardly bears repeating.

And I do so love the implication that South Africa's some kind of multicultural utopia since the abolition of Apartheid.   Apartheid was a stain   --    a cruel, evil stain --   and when it was ended the world became a much better place.  You can't hope for any kind of    equality, global or otherwise,    with the boot of Apartheid stepping on the throat of one of the biggest economies in Africa.

That said, abolishing Apartheid was only    one battle,  and South Africa hasn't won the war by a long shot.  The country is a mess.

What Pissy Chrissy fails to understand is that the Republicans (the decent ones, at least) want to SAVE   our    country by STOPPING Obama.   de Clerk, on the other hand, wanted to SAVE his country by NOT STOPPING Mandela.   There's a difference.         The latter was an attempt to integrate the formerly segregated and separate aspects of South Africa's society   to try and create a unified whole.    Obama, on the other hand, works tirelessly to DIVIDE the formerly united and cohesive aspects of American society; to literally set brother against brother, parents against children, old against young, black against white, male against female, etc.

While the South African experiment has thus far been a miserable failure, there's still hope that in the future they can learn from their mistakes and become a better place.   They've    just not    yet    reached    that state of national evolution.

But America?  We ARE that place already.   Our mistake was electing this asshat into the Oval Office    and then letting him run roughshod over the Constitution and every one of our founding and governing principles.   We've allowed ourselves to devolve    from a united nation with a booming economy -- the kind of place South Africa aspires to be --    to a spiteful,  feuding country of alleged haves and have-nots.

Not so far as has ever been revealed.  iirc, their marriage occurred while he was in prison and was largely for political reasons.  They ended up divorced within just a few years of his release.  While it's possible that she was secretly acting as his enforcer after his release, there hasn't been any evidence of it.

The jackholes have it exactly backward.  Not that this is unusual.

The true analogy is that Mandela, after years of incarceration, was magnanimous after his liberation and chose not to pursue a one-party ANC state which many in the ANC wanted.  It was him reaching out to De Klerk which saved South Africa.  That's why both of them shared the Nobel Peace Prize.

Obama, on the other hand, rather than reach out to those he had vanquished, sneered "I Won," rammed through a ginormous $800 billion stimulus bill that did nothing but patch holes in state government budgets for a couple of years while exploding the national debt, and then rammed through Obamacare on a party-line vote.

This is so obvious a caveman could see it.

113 76 It never ceases to amaze me how desperately the left clings (bitterly, one might say) to McConnell's declaration that he wanted to make Obama a one-term president as prima facie evidence of malevolence and / or racism.

ItÂ’s beyond perversity that these fellow leftwit travelers have constructed are living in and trying to bring credibility to their alternate universe that bears no resemblance to reality at all. I think its way beyond time to stop treating anyone at MSDNC as anything other than a freak show exhibit. Yes, part of me still feels a strong desire to do physical and career harm every time I read a quote or watch a video, but to what end? ItÂ’s an intellectual snuff film at this point. The advertisers on MSDNC are fair game. And anyone who I meet in person who attempts to quote or draw relevance to anything coming from this font of leftism is going to be treated (at best) like something I would scrape from the bottom of my shoe. At worst I will become outright hostile to them. Anything else is a waste of my time and electrons. 176 139 At this point the ranting of this alcohol addled imbecile have left amusing or even cringe worthy behind as Matthews has veered past simple derangement.

Sorry Ace, IÂ’m sure your Matthews interview thread will be a thing of beauty, but the subject truly isnÂ’t worth the effort at this point.

185 How about Mr. Obama is willing, and showing his intent through actions, to destroy our country and way of life for his personal philosophical ideas.  Ideas, by the way, which are foreign to American culture and the functioning of a republican democracy. Ideas, which despite the fact a majority of our electorate disagrees with, the Democrat Party oligarchy continues to foist upon us.

I've grown a bit tired of liberals saying if we only would simply surrender the freedom to think, argue, debate and decide in a democratic fashion that we would be much better under Mr. Obama's tutelage. No, we wouldn't. We would be subjects of a despot. Nothing is more un-American than that.

I disagree.   Ignoring these idiots    permits them to continue ranting   undisturbed     in their bubble of frothing hatred.    And while Pissy Chrissy and other leftist commentators may have piss-poor ratings, they DO have ratings nonetheless.      The people who watch them are just as cloistered, just as close-minded, just as insane as Chrissy and Company.

The only way to break the media is to expose, mock and destroy them from the outside.  Pick at the frayed edges and the whole thing will eventually come apart,   and Chrissy is about as frayed as they come.   If you want to eventually take out the heart of the leftwing media complex -- the big three networks and papers like the NYT -- you have to take out their pawns and wingmen first.

213 162 And I'll repeat the point I made this morning on the Headlines thread: why does Mandela's death warrant a lowering of the flag to half staff, but Dame Thatcher's death did not? Is the United States in the habit of lowering the flag following the death of world leaders? Or do they lower the flag just on those times when they want to make some cheap political points by pretending to care that a civil rights icon has died? Because you know Obammy doesn't ACTUALLY care. Mandela is only as important to him as his usefulness allows.

When I think of Chris Matthews (I try not to, but sometimes there's a post on AOS and I'm forced to think about little Chrissy McTingles) I'm reminded of an old story that's applicable to Matthews.

Kris Kristofferson, Barbra Streisand and Jon Peters (who was then Barbra's husband after having first been her hairdresser) were making a movie in Arizona.  Kristofferson suffered from an inexplicable lack of taste and judgment and was pursuing--supposedly successfully--the sexual favors of La Streisand.  [I'm not making this up pally--that was the story.]

Anyway the cuckolded Peters confronted Kristofferson who replied, "Any time I want any shit from you I'll just squeeze your head."

True, but all that really does is cheapen the meaning of the flag.  It takes it from being    a     tribute   given on behalf of the whole nation and makes it the very petty, selfish    tribute    given on behalf of one     narcissistic man.

Whitney Houston got the flag lowered, too.   She was pretty popular in the singing world at about the same time Thatcher was helping destroy the Communist Bloc.   But Obama liked Whitney Houston's music, and he didn't really care for Thatcher's anti-communist ideology.

250 Thanks for watching Chris Matthews so I don't have to. This is actually useful information. It has been hard for me to fathom how the left could attribute every disagreement with Obama as racism - other than through knowing bad faith. This sheds some light on it and it goes to the old saw that we think they're wrong; they think we're evil. In the Chris Matthews/leftist view, Obama is our Mandela. The oppressive right therefore has a duty to lay down, renounce "our" past actions and celebrate the breakthrough. We see Obama as a man, a President that is doing things contrary to the good of the county who must be opposed on policy grounds. They see us as opposing their symbol of all that is good.

256 IIRC, it was Christie who lowered the flags (in NJ) for Whitney Houston. Obama did not do that.

257 If obama had a father, he be a black african communist like Mandela.    Oh wait....

258 Whitney Houston got the flag lowered, too. She was pretty popular in the singing world at about the same time Thatcher was helping destroy the Communist Bloc. But Obama liked Whitney Houston's music, and he didn't really care for Thatcher's anti-communist ideology. Posted by: MWR, Proud Tea(rrorist) Party Assault Hobbit at December 06, 2013 02:51 PM

For the record, Obama didn't order the flags at half-staff.  The only flags that went there were in NJ on orders from Christie.

260 So Nexus Model 6 EC, which version of Blade Runner do you recommend?

1982 Theatrical release?
International theatrical release 1982?
Director's Cut 1992?
The final cut?

261 He's using Mitch McConnell as his demon right-winger? Delusional from the outset.

262 So Nexus Model 6 EC, which version of Blade Runner do you recommend?

I like International release because it's the one I saw with the narration and happy ending.  The DC and FC have stuff taken out, which goes against the whole point of making a version with extra stuff that you want to include.

I don't know.  I guess I can see why Scott wanted to change the feel of the movie.  For movies I like, I want to see everything the director shot.  I want all footage included, I don't want to miss anything.

263 "He's using Mitch McConnell as his demon right-winger?

Delusional from the outset."

I think a rational setup for later down the campaign trail.  "If you think Mitch McConnell is a hard-core rightwinger, let us introduce you to his fascist Tea Party primary opponent."

I think I remember reading that Philip K. Dick lived long enough to see the initial theatrical release of Blade Runner. He was delighted.

I didn't like Ridley Scott's admission that he believed Deckard was a replicant himself, and directed Harrison Ford along those lines. It didn't feel right to me, not at all, and was--in my opinion--alien to Dick's conception of the character.

Virtually all of Philip K. Dick's work revolved around questions of identity, the blending of perspectives of objective and subjective reality, and the nature of humanity. Something is lost, I think, if Deckard turns out to be a replicant.

It makes no sense if he is.  I could never reconcile that fact and the rest of the movie.

273 Hey, Chrissie. When your throbbing slows you might want to consider the precedent the Gore and Clinton people set for this when Bush 43 was elected? Litigating Florida forever, stealing w's from typewriters, blocking appointees, etc. that wasn't very de Klerk - like, was it?

274 Obama's going to South Africa to show respect to Mandela.  What a wonderful opportunity to also pee on Margaret Thatchers memory as well, you know to finish the job.  Give her the Sarah Palin treatment.....respect/tolerance the demorat/Obama way.

Why does anyone advertise on either CNN or MSNBC?  No one watchs either one of them.  Advertising rates should be very low.  If you are not getting them cheap, you should be!
