Christmas Morning Open Thread
— andy

And, lo, the angel of the Lord came upon them, and the glory of the Lord shone round about them: and they were sore afraid.

And the angel said unto them, Fear not: for, behold, I bring you good tidings of great joy, which shall be to all people.

For unto you is born this day in the city of David a Saviour, which is Christ the Lord. ~ Luke 2:9-11

6 Luke, chapter 2: 1 And it came to pass in those days, that there went out a decree from Caesar Augustus that all the world should be taxed. 2 (And this taxing was first made when Cyrenius was governor of Syria.) 3 And all went to be taxed, every one into his own city. 4 And Joseph also went up from Galilee, out of the city of Nazareth, into Judaea, unto the city of David, which is called Bethlehem; (because he was of the house and lineage of David 5 To be taxed with Mary his espoused wife, being great with child. 6 And so it was, that, while they were there, the days were accomplished that she should be delivered. 7 And she brought forth her firstborn son, and wrapped him in swaddling clothes, and laid him in a manger; because there was no room for them in the inn. 8 And there were in the same country shepherds abiding in the field, keeping watch over their flock by night. 9 And, lo, the angel of the Lord came upon them, and the glory of the Lord shone round about them: and they were sore afraid. 10 And the angel said unto them, Fear not: for, behold, I bring you good tidings of great joy, which shall be to all people. 11 For unto you is born this day in the city of David a Saviour, which is Christ the Lord. 12 And this shall be a sign unto you; Ye shall find the babe wrapped in swaddling clothes, lying in a manger. 13 And suddenly there was with the angel a multitude of the heavenly host praising God, and saying, 14 Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace, good will toward men.

A nice Christmas morning as I watch the sun rise on a very cold Northern Virginia morning. Merry Christmas all and have a great day. 12 Good Morning Morons.  Today is Wednesday, December 25, 2013.  Merry Christmas Morons.   Sorry I missed yesterday.  And to make matters worse I slept late today so no news.

And for today instead of more bad news we have this

O little town of Bethlehem, how still we see thee lie;
Above thy deep and dreamless sleep the silent stars go by;
Yet in thy dark street shineth the everlasting Light;
The hopes and fears of all the years are met in thee to-night.
For Christ is born of Mary; and gathered all above
while mortals sleep the angels keep their watch of wondering love;
O morning stars! Together proclaim the holy birth,
And praises sing to God the King and peace to men on earth.
How silently, how silently the wondrous gift is given!
So God imparts to human hearts the blessings of His heaven;
No ear may hear His coming ; but in this world of sin
where meek souls will receive Him still, the dear Christ enters in.
O holy child of Bethlehem, descend to us we pray;
Cast out our sin, and enter in--be born in us today!
We hear the Christmas angels the great glad tidings tell--
Oh come to us, abide with us, Our Lord Immanuel.

I always hear that sung in my head in the voices of aunts and uncles and my parents from the days when I was a kid and my great-aunt had everyone for Christmas dinner. There were always a few carols sung in the evening. She even had little booklets of sheet music we used. It sounded 'as good as church' to my child's ears.

Merry Christmas, everyone.

Yes I did.  The "new" Kindle app came up with a icon that said "all books on this device".  That was not there before.  So I pushed that button and wham, they all came back even though none had showed up in memory when I tried looking using IE from the computer.

29 Bought the grandsons boxing gloves, fishing poles, and more bb shot on Monday. No electronic stuff this year. Anyway this was at K-Mart, who keep all the shot and bb guns under lock and key, so had to wait for someone to get the key. I saw a little bb pistol with a CO2 charge. Anyone have any experience with them? When I whack the deer with my standard pellet gun, they run, but still come back the very next day. I'm not looking to kill 'em, just make 'em remember the sting a whole lot longer.

As I sit here finishing off the coffee, I can hear the snowplows going by. Which means the hour and a half I put in yesterday to clear the driveway and sidewalk so that our guests don't slip, fall, or track in a bunch of snow, was a waste of time. So in a hour or so back outside I go!!

37 @29, They are gonna shoot their out! (Red Ryder Christmas quote). All joking and kidding aside I like to use plastic pellet low brass loads for horned rats (deer )jumping in my garden for salad buffet. I would just shoot them straight out and eat em up (Love venison) but the local LE's and Game wardens frown upon that. See Here..http://www.ammunitiontogo.com/index.php/cName/12-gauge-specialty-ammo The rubber pellets discourage them and they rarely come back. Used them on some chicken killing neighborhood dogs too!

85 Good morning and Merry Christmas to all my friends in the little box. I woke up a little but ago, turned on the bigger box and "the Yule Log" is on one of the local antenna channels. Yes, the same Yule Log from the ONT. I 've never seen that before. Regular Moron, don't waste your $ on the CO2 airgun. The cartridges are too expensive, inconvenient and don't last. I have a Crossman ten-pump pistol I bought at a sporting goods store a few years back that works great, and is super accurate. I've picked off the fuzzy-tailed rats at 120 ft with it.

86 >>>Then that seems like the ticket. I have squirrels that run across my roof, jump over my head into a nearby tree and dump berries all over the deck. When I shoot them with the pellet gun they run away and come back a couple hours later. There are so many of them I wouldn't mind thinning the herd.<<<

I use a Ruger Airhawk pellet rifle for squirrel control. 1000+fps, they won't be running off if you hit 'em with it!

Merry Christmas everyone!

90 Good day. Hope you're warm and safe. When I first read the Gospels for myself as an adult, I was persuaded that the better chunk of it was most likely valid history, as much as humanly possible. I did not read through the filter of Christian exegesis and interpretation, only with the filter of the Gospel authors. And my education and experience. I read skeptically, critically.Some things they attribute to Jesus, I doubted. My best example is that the fig tree withering, whatever one may draw as lesson from the story, seemed out of character for one who employed nature so admiringly in his teachings. Just my sense; believe it if you need it. But integral to the whole drama, Christmas to Easter, is his claim to have pre-existed, even eternally. He was unquestionably mortal, eating, touching, bleeding. If you or I claimed that pre-existence, we would rightly be hauled away to the longsleeves retreat. But aside from random withered fig trees, he seemed to me to be the most sober, intelligent, charming, loving revealer of truth, head and shoulders wiser than anyone he lived among, common folk or educated. Well-balanced, clever, wisely confident, not usual traits of the self-deluded, of which we have so many examples to compare. So, I had to conclude, either he had that one nutty quirk of a claim to pre-mortal, super-mortal existence. Or, he knew it and meant it. I could not call him crazy. I well knew what Christians taught, but I wasn't sure what he was and what that meant, and I thought, I might never know in this life. But I knew, I believed that he believed it. And that challenged my world, and set me seeking. More than four decades later, my theology has expanded considerably. But I have the same challenging mystery, and powerful inspiration, of the Son of God incarnate. Merry Christmas

91 Vic, my hunting buddy and I have a tradition called a Whiskey Front. That's when the first cold front that comes down has geese moving with it. No matter what you are doing when you hear them honking you have to take a shot of the water of life. It has led to some inconvenient moments, like when everyone else is in the car going to church.

Big wipe out that spring on the way to school (6th grade) rounding a corner way too fast and too close to the curb left me and my clothes ripped up and me bleeding head to ankle. I don't have no safe queens, everything gets shot, except for that Han Yang (Chinese GEW clone) from back in the day. That things a hundred years old or so. I am kind of afraid to shoot it. I only bought it for the cartouches (which are amazing). It was relegated to second line forces when the T-53 went into production! If that thing could talk it would tell a story of Chinese rebellions, WWII Jap invasion and a Commie revolution.

142 It's hard to get people to get their screenings done early and regularly when they hear stories like these. In my BIL's case he wanted to live the Rush Limbaugh lifestyle. Big cigars every day and night, big 22 ounce beef dinners, because he worked hard dammit, not like all the layabouts on welfare he supported. Angry dude who spent his early years as an alcoholic, destroying cars and his own body. His Irish genes and age (~50) and some complaint about bleeding brought on his first in-hospital scope. (My wife also had her first scope in hospital after his diagnosis out of fear of what they might find.) Long story short they scoped the extent of his cancer and started cutting. But it had already metastasized through his body into his liver. The liver cancer was what finally got him about 16 months later. After the initial screening of my wife, finding nothing, she can now go to an-outpatient clinic which only scopes, no chance of immediate surgery.

Merry Christmas everybody, and many more to you!

Up at 5:45 to drive my teenage son to work,  and Sheetz has free coffee all day--I'd forgotten they did that, but son was warmed and pleased when he got on line with his change and the lady pushed it back and said "Merry Christmas!"

Came home and let dogs out and in, fed them, and started cooking.

Turkey breast with herbs and wrapped in bacon in crockpot, prepping vegs and stuffing now, ham to go in oven later, and a five flavor glazed poundcake wrapped and ready for dessert.  They may even get corn muffins!  Cheeses, pickles, olives, nuts &etc ready to be replenished all day.

First cup of coffee, second will have nog instead of cream, and maybe some Myer's dark Jamaican.  Here's to my husband's Uncle Bill's sister Evelyn, who gave me just the right size mug years ago, and is gone now.

Survived Christmas Eve with my mother-in-law, who has somehow lived to be 78 in spite of keeping score instead of counting blessings, and did her passive aggressive best last night to make a new chapter in the saga.

Have to hand it to the upcoming generation:  they said no politely and firmly as needed with smiles on their faces, and a great time was had by most!  My poor MIL;  unfortunately she is NEVER happy...unless everyone ELSE is miserable.

Old blind dog passed out in patch of sun in dining room, puppy curled up with bone from Christmas Eve veal after pigging out on breakfast kibble.

Some rough spots this year, and some new missing faces at the table forever, but a beautiful day and a good one.

Thankful.

God bless us every one, truly.

Darn accurate for a milsurp! I had a friend tell me once.. "If you want accuracy..buy a remington 700" I replied.."It has no history, or character". BTW those CZ-82's are sweet. I love the high capacity mags. I bought a couple of P-64's too , great pistols but a little snappy on the hand. Don't even get me started on Tokarev's.

158 I don't have no safe queens, everything gets shot, except for that Han Yang (Chinese GEW clone) from back in the day. Posted by: Judge_Roy_Bean at December 25, 2013 09:02 AM (fEzLG) The P38 has had the hell shot out of it over the 40+ years he's owned it. I once saw the entire mag emptied in the time it took him to jump in the air and land. Of course, he had almost just stepped on a rattlesnake. I also contend to this day that he emptied his shotgun as well, but he disputes that.

159 157 -- JR Bean -- I hear ya... I got lucky several years back and got my hands on some Czech Sniper/match grade ammo for my M39. Doubt I'll ever get that luck again... I'm saving that stuff for a special occasion.

Heh, my Cz82 is only second to my East German Mak... the best of the WP Makarov's IMO.

162 I always suggest if people are reading the Bible after a long time or for the first time -FenelonSpoke At age 20, although I was raised with Gospel and Epistle readings, soaking in Bible Belt culture, it took a Jewish college professor and an academic turned mystic to make me realize, I'd never actually sat down and read them for myself. Two impressions, somewhat contradictilory, but strong, I recall. One was, oh, now I understand why people have been so excited about him for centuries! and How come nobody ever told me about this!

165 "I like Yancey because the Jesus he presents a masculine Jesus. We sort of have lost that sometimes..." Can't recall if it was from the fine little book "This Fellow Jesus" or elsewhere, but... updating slightly... Hearty Galilean fishermen weren't going to give up everything to follow some pajamaboy.

166 The dog was likely put in a garbage bag, thrown into a dumpster specific for construction material, picked up by a garbage truck and hauled to a dump, Reed said. Once in the dump, the dog survived large piles of debris piled on top of him, only to be scooped up by a tractor and dumped onto a conveyor belt. While riding along the conveyor belt, Gem went through the shaker screen which removes excess dirt and was on her way to a 20-foot fall down a chute to end up in a landfill. Workers are stationed at the end of the conveyor belt to further inspect the material to see if anything else can be recycled before heading to the landfill. When trash sorter Greggory Foster noticed something moving on the line, he sprang into action. http://goo.gl/gLr54w Good on you, mister! That is one pathetic looking little pup. All's well that ends well and there are plenty of people who want to adopt her.

167 Overdo it on the Val-U-Rite vodka last night? Skin more than your quota of hobos this year? Disown a family member or friend because they support Obamacare? Troll too many liberal web sites? Spend too much time mocking Glenn Greenwald's sock puppets? Whoa. Who am I kidding? None of these are real offenses.

However, in case you committed any real sins *wink, wink, nudge, nudge*, a Savior, who offers us forgiveness, love, hope and peace, is available to all Morons and 'Ettes. Remember Him today!

Merry Christmas, y'all!

168 Chobani Dropped From Whole Foods Shelves Why? Because the cows that produce the milk they use are feed genetically modified food. Leftards like to whine that conservatives are antiscience but really it is just the opposite.

Mary did you know that your baby boy would some day walk on water?
Mary did you know that your baby boy would save our sons and daughters?
Did you know that your baby boy has come to make you new?
This child that you've delivered, will soon deliver you.

Mary did you know that your baby boy would give sight to a blind man?
Mary did you know that your baby boy would calm a storm with his hand?
Did you know that your baby boy has walked where angels trod?
And when your kiss your little baby, you have kissed the face of God.

Oh Mary did you know

The blind will see, the deaf will hear, the dead will live again.
The lame will leap, the dumb will speak, the praises of the lamb

Mary did you know that your baby boy is Lord of all creation?
Mary did you know that your baby boy would one day rule the nations?
Did you know that your baby boy is heaven's perfect Lamb?
This sleeping child you're holding is the great I am

174 New Thread smell, but I'm hanging here for a bit. @ 158 (Zombie John Gotti). Dads and Guns. Oh the stories! Your's cracked me up. reminded me of the time my Dad and me were travelling to his camp (120 acres In W Va on a mountaintop). He kept saying they had no snakes up there. I hate snakes BTW. So I bounce my Camaro all the way up there, need to get out of the car and turn over a big stump blocking the little 1 lane dirt path (officially the "harper Trail") and what do I find? A baby copperhead! Then we are sitting in front the hunting camp, and I am sitting on an old frige turned on its side. I hear this sound like a scraping. I look down and 1 snake is slithering into the fridge, while another one is slithering out and under a piece of corrugated roofing on the ground I had my feet on. I yelled 'Snakes"! Dad said "Where"? I said right here and under that corrugated roofing. I picked up the large piece of roofing and it was a hollow under there with lots of snakes so I dropped it back down. Dad's eyes got big as pie plates. He took that M-1 carbine and went to shooting. Darn roofing looked like swiss cheese when he was done. Snakes went flying everywhere. Some of them ran under the camp building. So Dad stuck that rifle under the camp building and emptied the mag. After it was all said and done , I lifted the roofing and it was empty. Not 1 dead snake or drop of blood. We still laugh about it to this day. I call jokingly Dad 'snake killer".

175 @ 159 CPT. Charles, I don't have an East German Mak but love the CZ-82's. Good at ya on Match ammo. I snagged a couple of crates of GP-11 for the K-31's And a lot of M-75 sniper ammo for the 8mm's. Merry Christmas all from China. It's bedtime for Bonzo so I need to sign out.

Merry Christmas, Morons and Moronettes!

 Last night at Christmas Eve dinner, I had a pleasant surprise. My older brother - once very liberal but becoming gradually more conservative - told us he had just applied for a CC permit and completed a gun safety class with his son. My SIL's mother, visiting from Florida, who is a lib in most respects, urged everyone to join the NRA to "preserve our 2nd Amendment rights" and got into a friendly argument with my sister's conservative hunter husband over the best revolver for a woman to carry - she's a big Glock fan, he is not.

I remember a family gathering about a dozen years ago where this same brother was shouting at me across the table about the need for gun control. If the gun grabbers have lost people like my brother and my SIL's mother is a card-carrying NRA member - that's a very good sign that all the left's propaganda is not working.
