— DrewM Terrible if true.
Rockets with toxic agents were launched at the suburbs of the Ghouta region early on Wednesday as part of a major bombardment on rebel forces, they say.The Syrian army says the accusations have been fabricated to cover up rebel losses.
The main opposition alliance said that more than 1,000 people were killed by the attacks.
Activist networks also reported death tolls in the hundreds, but these could not be independently confirmed.
It is also not clear how many died in the bombardment of the sites and how many deaths were due to any exposure to toxic substances.
The UK and France have called for international inspectors to be allowed into the region to investigate the claim. The Obama administration has responded by asking, "Have you seen our new puppy?"
Obviously this would be a horrible thing if it turns out it's true but before getting swept up in the emotion of the moment people need to consider the implications of actually doing anything about it.
We could bomb Syrian military units. And then? The government has been regaining lost territory over the last month or two. Would airstrikes make sense now? Would they actually help the rebels that much?
Should we give the rebels more weapons? Just because people may have been killed in a chemical attack doesn't change the fact that we don't want the jihadi connected fighters to win.
Surely no one with half a brain would advocate US troops on the ground in Syria.
In short, even if this terrible massacre did take place (and there's a reasonable case to be made for questioning the timing of the story) it doesn't change the basic calculus for the US...do whatever it takes to keep the fighting going for as long as possible.
More dead Assad loyalists + more dead jihadis = US Win.
It's cold, it's uncaring and it's the reality of our interest in the fight.

Furthermore, why does the US need to be involved in every conflict in the world?
We're constantly told by the left that we're not exception, that we're no longer a super power, that we're aggressive, we invade too many countries, and that our military involvement inevitably leads to blowback.
Well fine. Let's stay the fuck out. Let them kill each other. This isn't like Egypt where it is in our political interest to pick a side. Syria doesn't really have oil, they don't have the Suez canal, they are unimportant. We don't really gain anything if Assad wins or if the Jihadi's win, so let this civil war take a long as it needs to.
I miss our Cold War foreign policy. If two enemies are killing each other, then let them.

2 years ago it would have been terrible, and it still is for the innocents who were killed.
All we can do as individuals is give money to any charity who is helping those innocents get out of harms way.
As a gov? Drew nailed it. We donÂ’t help the Jihadists gain control. It's better for us Assad wins than the Jihadists. Granted, its still lose-lose, but its a small loss compared to another Afghanistan....filled with chemical weapons the terrorists can use against us.

Nerve agents can persist under the right circumstances for far longer than what experts say is their lifespan. And unlike say an unexploded mortar round which you can see and avoid if you have sense, usually where a nerve agent lurks can be that doorknob you just touched.

Also, Chemical weapons don't worry me very much. Anyone with a Chemical Engineering degree could easily whip up some chemical weapons. Heck, you've probably got enough chemical ingredients in your house to make something deadly. They're not as complex as people make them out to be, nor are they all that effective. Most governments realized that back in 1916.
It is the proliferation of biological and nuclear weapons that people should fear.

We all have a friend that the safe bet is to bet the opposite of what ever bet he makes. He bets red on the roulette wheel, you bet black and take home the money.
The safe bet is always to bet against the Left. 90% of the time you will be on the correct side in the long run.
If the Left wants Assad to be overthrown the most likely correct course of action over the long run would to keep Assad in power. They were wrong with Ghaddafi, they were wrong with the Shah, they were wrong with multiple South American countries and they will continue to be wrong in the future.

We don't and never really have been.
Throw a dart at a world map and chances are that I'll land near a spot with some sort of conflict going on.
Syria under Assad has provided the main pipeline of weapons to Hezbollah in Lebanon and supported attacks on American troops in Iraq (and elsewhere).
As much as the US has an interest in not seeing the jihadis take power, there are very good reasons to want him gone. That said, I'm perfectly content to let them duke it out themselves.

Then the question, how can we help? Is there something that we can do that will prolong this process or make it more efficient? Perhaps we can offer airlift capability to Egypt to transport some of the Muslim Brotherhood to Syria. Then maybe we can make the same offer to Iran so that they don't lose their client state if Assad gets too threatened.
Maybe we can contract with Haliburton to build a reconstruction of France around the Somme or Verdun in 1916, complete with trenches, barbed wire and machine guns. The two sides can take turns climbing out of their trenches and charging at each other.

NSA question.... from article in the sidebar.
Something has bothered me for awhile now... and it finally hit me...
The Constitution is a document which talks about Human Rights, and what the US Government CANNOT do...
Congress shall pass no law.... is a common phrase....
Now, as the Constitution and Declaration declare that these Rights are part of being human.... does it not then follow that ALL people have these Rights, and that the Constitution stops the US Government from infringing on those Rights?
Folks are saying that the NSA stuff is OK without a Warrant, because we are just spying on foreigners... but are they not also covered by the 'safe in their persons and papers' phrase? As they are Humans... and the Constitution says that the US Government may not do that?
Spies used to know that they would be prosecuted under the laws of the country they were in.... but his is happening on US soil... under US Jurisdiction... and I submit it disregards the clear intent of the our 'Highest Law'... which it to put limits on what the Federal Government can do.

And the Bill of Rights does not differentiate between non citizens and citizens when it talks about what the Government cannot do....
The US Fed Gov itself, has claimed Worldwide Jurisdiction for its Law...
So, as our Law reaches worldwide, why would the Limitations the Constitution puts on the Fed Government, not also be worldwide?

So it doesn't matter what the circumstances are or are not, in Syria, the problem is 51% of the voters in the US voted for Obama, then re-elected him four years later, even after seeing him for what he really is.
So, until the division between the two halves of the US are somehow reconciled, it doesn't matter what happens in Syria, Iran, Iraq, Afghanistan, Pakistan, Egypt, Europe, Mexico, or the Pacific. Until the ideology that divides the US is somehow bridged, until the race divide, the economic divide, the religious divide, the social class divide is addressed, nothing else really matters, because as long as the US is divided, no coherent foreign policy is possible either to craft or carry out.
Until the fundamental transformation of the US successfully managed by Barack Obama is undone, nothing else can be done. Apparently there isn't anyone in the US who can stop Obama, so our only hope is that in three years and a few odd months, Obama actually leaves the political scene and political power transfers to someone else.

Also, Chemical weapons don't worry me very much. Anyone with a Chemical Engineering degree could easily whip up some chemical weapons.Heck, you've probably gotenough chemical ingredients in your house to make something deadly. They're not as complex as people make them out to be, nor are they all that effective. Most governments realized that back in 1916.
It is the proliferation of biological and nuclear weapons that people should fear.
Posted by: Ben at August 21, 2013 11:41 AM (L/QR0)"
Well, you obviously never spent any time wearing a full butyl rubber suit. Chemical weapons will probably not kill too many fully equipped soldiers who are aware of the attack in time to don their protective equipment. Of course, efficiency is diminished just a tad since it is not particularly easy to eat, drink or eliminate while wearing full chemical protective gear. The stuff is also really hot. One of my fonder memories of chemical weapons school at Fort McClellan, Alabama was the decon and undressing part. When it came time to take off the rubber barn boots that were part of the ensemble, we would turn them upside down and dump a quart of sweat out of each boot.
Yes. If you are properly protected you can work with chemical weapons without injury or death but you can only do it for so long and you need quite a bit of extra infrastructure and logistics which I seriously doubt are available to the Syrian rebels.

Assad is more than just a middle man. Iran provides money and weapons, but politically Assad has long used Hezbollah to maintain a grip on Lebanon- including the assassination of anti-Syrian politicians.
Without Assad providing transit and pulling the political strings, Iran would have a much more difficult time keeping Hezbollah armed and kept under control.
There's a reason that Hezbollah- an organization that sells itself as the Lebanese "resistance" against Israel- is fighting in Syria on behalf of Assad, just as there's a reason that the leader of Hezbollah took shelter in Damascus instead of Tehran.

I don't know exactly how they determine parole eligibility, but if they count the 3 years time served as part of that third he could be out on parole in under 9 years.

Reality isn't always pretty.
The silence out of the UN should not be surprising - but it has been irrelevant and fundamentally broken for decades - not unlike it's failed predecessor, the League of Nations.
What is being missed is that the President defined this specific action as a 'red line' - and drew that line in the sand. He has effectively boxed himself into a situation (from multiple missteps) where there is no way to 'win'...and just confirms to our enemies that he is incompetent, naive, and weak when it comes to his foreign policy vision and principles.

Helping either side in Syria, outside of humanitarian aid, is ridiculously short sighted. Giving either side weapons to prolong the fighting is not just bad foreign policy, but evil. Both sides are murdering civilians.
Someday, one side or the other will win and expose the atrocities of the other side. We don't want to give legitimacy to those in the Middle East who blame us for all suffering. We should be as uninvolved in Syria as possible.

That arms race is well under way, its letting the various local management team know the Rubicon has been crossed without consequence that's the problem. Since we can't reliably determine if Assad or Al-Nursa did this -- we should go Roman and stirke both of them - hard. I mean hard - direct, overt precision strikes on the residences and families of their leadership cabals. Reagan doctrine - kill their kids.

Nancy Boy and I are wondering if America shouldn't equip those "close to but not quite yet al Qaeda" Sunni groups fighting in Syria with tactical nukes to fight back against the evil Shiites. Either that or maybe we should put boots on the ground. We cannot let the Muslim Brotherhood or our other prominent Sunni allies be subsumed in this spreading religious war.
Have I lost all relevence or coherence yet? My years in the Senate may have affected my thinking.

If you use QuickBook and segregrate your spending -- you can put together your own inflation rate based on your lifestyle and locale - vice - the generic Government rate.
Currently 7.4% per annum (running year, or 7.1% same month/2yrs) without gas, 8.7% if I include gas. I take out gas because where I buy it really matters, if I'm up on the farm - its 20c cheaper then the city and that skews the rate. I should have segregated gas by locale when I started.

That could be why the Saudis are supporting jihadists in Syria and opposing them in Egypt. Syria is a Russian client that happens to be in the way of a pipeline supplying natgas to the EU. Suddenly Putin doesn't have a monopoly on gas to the Continent
That's most likely the real "gas" that's the issue here

Rebels Poisoned By Own Side
AP-The chemical attack of three weeks ago
in Damascus, Syria, has been shown to have been
the work of militants opposed to Assad's regime
but also at odds with native rebels, the UN reported
today. The militants, claimed by some to be associated
with al-Queda, were found to have detonated stolen rockets
from a cache of chemical tipped weapons believed to
have been manufactured in Iraq, and then blaming the Syrian
government.

I could go back and do it - but I would have to read and tag hundreds of transactions. There isnt an easy way to parse out by location of the purchase in the transaction records either, Next upgrade cycle, I'll give it a shot or just use a specific card for all my rural gas purchases - they're all at the same station and they have card - so I'll just get their card for use up there - and aren't local down here so it should segregate the data effectively.

First, the number of dead, the dirty secret of chemical weapons is that they really aren't that effective. In order to kill hundred, the people would have had to have been grouped in a contained air space(s) - like bomb shelters or stadiums. Possible, but not likely. It's simply easier to kill people with good old HE rounds, rather then going thru all the hassle associated with chemical weapons.
Second, their are enough guys running around in Syria who know how to collect proper samples - it doesn't take that long to analyze them. Real data please.

Mustard and chlorine gas deployment in WWI created a repugnance against its use that has persisted to this day, with reason. Killing people like bugs in a jar may not seem any more vile than blowing them up or shooting them, but it is. Nerve gas, especially, is about as awful as it gets. There is also a fun little variant called 'blister agent', while we're on the subject. You should look it up.
War has rules. Those rules don't seem to be followed much anymore (except by us), but they exist for a reason.

I remember Michael Totten writing that a lot of Israelis would love to be left wing Scandinavians or the sort of reflexively leftists you meet in academia but the fact that they are surrounded by millions of people who want them dead and work constantly for their extinction forces them to take a more pragmatic view of human nature and of their defense policy.
The way I think this probably works out is that when the US has a Republican president who is friendly to Israel, the confidence they feel leaves them free to indulge their inner left wing socialist doushebag. When there is a Democrat who is hostile to Israel in the White House, Israelis are forced to do what they must rather than what they want.

Posted by: Salty Alaskan at August 21, 2013 01:28 PM (+Z5tu) /i]
Not hand-wringing. NO one mourns the death of a jihadi. The difference is this:
1) Believe it or not, there actually ARE normal people in Syria who just want to live their lives without being shot at every day. They would suffer from a chemical weapons attack just as much as the bad guys.
2) Chemical weapons are awful, awful things. They kill and maim in excruciating ways, and not quickly either. The last thing anyone should do is say, "Meh, it's okay that they were used in this case because look who was killed. Who cares?" That's just a way of mainstreaming their use.

How are they going to do that? Get our orders right and quickly, and be courteous to the customers?

Think AllenG has joined the anthology kick. Still need to read Lauren's first draft since this morning went a bit sideways.

War has rules? Bowling has rules. War? Somewhat less so.

1) My mother in law lived in Vienna, in Penzing near the rail yards, when Austria was a part of Nazi Germany. From what I have heard from other people as well as her own accounts, she was never a Nazi or particularly enthusiastic about the Anschluss. My father flew in a B-24 and on several occasions bombed the rail yards in Vienna. Given the accuracy limits of 1940s technology that means that the bombs fell all over the general area in and around the rail yards. My dad never felt even a bit sheepish about what he did.
2) I have known people who were accidentally poisoned with nerve gas. They went through the whole convulsions, and rigid muscles thing but they were hit with an atropine injector in time and survived the experience. They all claimed that they could not remember anything between feeling faint and blurry vision and waking up in a hospital.
