Claim: Chemical Weapons Attack In Syria Kills 1,000+
— DrewM

Terrible if true.

Rockets with toxic agents were launched at the suburbs of the Ghouta region early on Wednesday as part of a major bombardment on rebel forces, they say.

The Syrian army says the accusations have been fabricated to cover up rebel losses.

The main opposition alliance said that more than 1,000 people were killed by the attacks.

Activist networks also reported death tolls in the hundreds, but these could not be independently confirmed.

It is also not clear how many died in the bombardment of the sites and how many deaths were due to any exposure to toxic substances.

The UK and France have called for international inspectors to be allowed into the region to investigate the claim. The Obama administration has responded by asking, "Have you seen our new puppy?"

Obviously this would be a horrible thing if it turns out it's true but before getting swept up in the emotion of the moment people need to consider the implications of actually doing anything about it.

We could bomb Syrian military units. And then? The government has been regaining lost territory over the last month or two. Would airstrikes make sense now? Would they actually help the rebels that much?

Should we give the rebels more weapons? Just because people may have been killed in a chemical attack doesn't change the fact that we don't want the jihadi connected fighters to win.

Surely no one with half a brain would advocate US troops on the ground in Syria.

In short, even if this terrible massacre did take place (and there's a reasonable case to be made for questioning the timing of the story) it doesn't change the basic calculus for the US...do whatever it takes to keep the fighting going for as long as possible.

More dead Assad loyalists + more dead jihadis = US Win.

It's cold, it's uncaring and it's the reality of our interest in the fight.

Furthermore, why does the US need to be involved in every conflict in the world?

We're constantly told by the left that we're not exception, that we're no longer a super power, that we're aggressive, we invade too many countries, and that our military involvement inevitably leads to blowback.

Well fine. Let's stay the fuck out. Let them kill each other.  This isn't like Egypt where it is in our political interest to pick a side. Syria doesn't really have oil, they don't have the Suez canal, they are unimportant. We don't really gain anything if Assad wins or if the Jihadi's win, so let this civil war take a long as it needs to.

I miss our Cold War foreign policy. If two enemies are killing each other, then let them.

Foreign Ministry Spokesman Alexander Lukashevich said on Wednesday circumstances around the reports, including the presence of UN inspectors in the country, suggested that attack could be a "provocation" by the opposition. 50 Its the creeping horror and wildness of biological weapons that make them super special.  Say your super bug mutates and renders the vaccine your troops have useless.  Game over.

Nerve agents can persist under the right circumstances for far longer than what experts say is their lifespan.  And unlike say an unexploded mortar round which you can see and avoid if you have sense, usually where a nerve agent lurks can be that doorknob you just touched.

Also, Chemical weapons don't worry me very much. Anyone with a Chemical Engineering degree could easily whip up some chemical weapons. Heck, you've probably got enough chemical ingredients in your house to make something deadly. They're not as complex as people make them out to be, nor are they all that effective.  Most governments realized that back in 1916.

It is the proliferation of biological and nuclear weapons that people should fear.

This.

Then the question, how can we help?  Is there something that we can do that will prolong this process or make it more efficient?  Perhaps we can offer airlift capability to Egypt to transport some of the Muslim Brotherhood to Syria.  Then maybe we can make the same offer to Iran so that they don't lose their client state if Assad gets too threatened.

Maybe we can contract with Haliburton to build a reconstruction of France around the Somme or Verdun in 1916, complete with trenches, barbed wire and machine guns.  The two sides can take turns climbing out of their trenches and charging at each other.

NSA question.... from article in the sidebar.

Something has bothered me for awhile now... and it finally hit me...

The Constitution is a document which talks about Human Rights, and what the US Government CANNOT do...

Congress shall pass no law.... is a common phrase....

Now, as the Constitution and Declaration declare that these Rights are part of being human.... does it not then follow that ALL people have these Rights, and that the Constitution stops the US Government from infringing on those Rights?

Folks are saying that the NSA stuff is OK without a Warrant, because we are just spying on foreigners... but are they not also covered by the 'safe in their persons and papers' phrase?  As they are Humans... and the Constitution says that the US Government may not do that?

Spies used to know that they would be prosecuted under the laws of the country they were in.... but his is happening on US soil... under US Jurisdiction... and I submit it disregards the clear intent of the our 'Highest Law'... which it to put limits on what the Federal Government can do.

Obama Foundation) as cover. Drudge is linking to a story about it, and NiceDeb also has a story. They're reporting that Malik is part of a Sudanese group of the MB that has been designated as a terrorist organization by our own State Department. The Egyptians are saying that they have documents to show what Malik's been up to, and how the Obama administration has been secretly helping the MB in Egypt despite the atrocities, like burning Christian churches, that the MB has been up to there. 175 The problem isn't that chemical weapons may (or may not) have been used in Syria. The problem is that Obama can't be trusted. His administration can't be trusted to see things clearly, to analyze things clearly, to craft an appropriate solution to clearly defined problems, or see to it that the carefully crafted solution is properly carried out.

So it doesn't matter what the circumstances are or are not, in Syria, the problem is 51% of the voters in the US voted for Obama, then re-elected him four years later, even after seeing him for what he really is.

So, until the division between the two halves of the US are somehow reconciled, it doesn't matter what happens in Syria, Iran, Iraq, Afghanistan, Pakistan, Egypt, Europe, Mexico, or the Pacific. Until the ideology that divides the US is somehow bridged, until the race divide, the economic divide, the religious divide, the social class divide is addressed, nothing else really matters, because as long as the US is divided, no coherent foreign policy is possible either to craft or carry out.

Until the fundamental transformation of the US successfully managed by Barack Obama is undone, nothing else can be done. Apparently there isn't anyone in the US who can stop Obama, so our only hope is that in three years and a few odd months, Obama actually leaves the political scene and political power transfers to someone else.

Also, Chemical weapons don't worry me very much. Anyone with a Chemical Engineering degree could easily whip up some chemical weapons.Heck, you've probably gotenough chemical ingredients in your house to make something deadly. They're not as complex as people make them out to be, nor are they all that effective. Most governments realized that back in 1916.

It is the proliferation of biological and nuclear weapons that people should fear.

Posted by: Ben at August 21, 2013 11:41 AM (L/QR0)"

Well, you obviously never spent any time wearing a full butyl rubber suit.  Chemical weapons will probably not kill too many fully equipped soldiers who are aware of the attack in time to don their protective equipment.  Of course, efficiency is diminished just a tad since it is not particularly easy to eat, drink or eliminate while wearing full chemical protective gear.  The stuff is also really hot.  One of my fonder memories of chemical weapons school at Fort McClellan, Alabama was the decon and undressing part.  When it came time to take off the rubber barn boots that were part of the ensemble, we would turn them upside down and dump a quart of sweat out of each boot.

Yes.  If you are properly protected you can work with chemical weapons without injury or death but you can only do it for so long and you need quite a bit of extra infrastructure and logistics which I seriously doubt are available to the Syrian rebels.

207 Israeli supermodel Bar Refaeli on Wednesday demanded of Pink Floyd front-man Roger Waters, a vocal supporter of Boycott Divestment and Sanctions (BDS) against Israel that he remove a glamorous shot of her from a video he uses in his performances, saying that Waters’s calls for a cultural boycott of the Jewish state should also include her. Via Twitter, Refaeli (@BarRefaeli) told her 500,000+ followers in Hebrew: “Roger Waters, you should remove my picture from videos at your concerts. If you’re going to boycott, then go all the way.” Yesterday, Waters, who already raised the ire of the Jewish community by featuring a pig shaped balloon emblazoned with a Star of David at his concerts, formally called for his supporters and musician colleagues to join the Boycott, Divestment and Sanction movement against Israel. In an interview with The Algemeiner, Simon Wiesenthal Center associate dean Rabbi Abraham Cooper said he was surprised by the timing of Waters’s latest call in light of the 1,700 recent political-related deaths in Egypt, Syria, Iraq and Lebanon and the current ongoing US-brokered peace talks. Never really liked her, but good on her for this one

229 trivial pursuit: During the Franco/Prussian War, Jules Verne predicted Germany's use of poisoned gas projectiles. [Chemical] weapons will be used in Syria by either, both and all sides with arms. You can't rightly blame Assad without blaming the jihadi rebels, MB or whoever else including our own interventionist intelligence community mercenaries, and without blaming every nation hosting globalist corporations that sold/sell [chemical] weaponry, namely the US and Western European nations, specifically France and Germany in the ME. Our military conflicts deemed by politicians as "never ending" abroad are dragging the USA citizens down in debt, only to service the global corporatists that profit from selling warfare, the same that outsource jobs and contracts out away from the US workforce, the same that swipe massive billions of US tax dollars from the American citizens in order to fund "private" corporatist "investments" that go belly up "nation building" at home [Solyndra] and abroad [Burma's other name]. It's legalized organized crime syndication via governments whose politicians are owned by global corporatists. A pound of flesh. And they regard no boundaries on what's for sale, or who's for sale. Case in local point given the slaughter of "citizenship" as redundant in this feudal renaissance zeitgeist: amnesty for illegal aliens (we're all serfs now), and the Republican neoconservative promotion of ObamaCare for All (except those deemed "special" given arbitrary loophole out). Our 2008 "love that tea party" congressman who spent a year stomping the House Floor after hours broadcasting his anti-ObamaCare speeches online via constituent emails and youtubes now questions attacks on ObamaCare, and every other neoconservative biggest-ever centralized authoritarian government program and bureau. It's no longer patriotic even in a "most conservative Texas congressional district" to quote either Constitution, the US or Texas. It isn't that his district has changed its mind about ObamaCare or any other governmental authoritarian intrusion. And he's quoting the RNC agenda. Where's the constitutional conservative American citizen to turn when every major PAC is stacked against us all in favor of those who submit, like our congressman has turned coat, fuckin' opportunistic former county judge. Difference between what he "enjoys" via submission to the beast and what the rest of us suffer is obvious. WE'RE not getting bought off; WE'RE PAYING HIS WAY TO PROFIT personally, while WE PAY OUR OWN WAY INTO SLAVERY. Definitely, follow the blood money, who ever is tied to chemical weaponry, weaponized drones over US citizens at home, or mandated pharmaceutical abuse or mandated purchases, especially something so private as one's health being taxed in order to fund insurance bureaucratic jobs -- not to keep down the expense of medical treatments.

240 Not as much as you think. Losing Iran would be a major blow. Assad is just the middle man.

Assad is more than just a middle man.  Iran provides money and weapons, but politically Assad has long used Hezbollah to maintain a grip on Lebanon- including the assassination of anti-Syrian politicians.

Without Assad providing transit and pulling the political strings, Iran would have a much more difficult time keeping Hezbollah armed and kept under control.

There's a reason that Hezbollah- an organization that sells itself as the Lebanese "resistance" against Israel- is fighting in Syria on behalf of Assad, just as there's a reason that the leader of Hezbollah took shelter in Damascus instead of Tehran.

_____________

Reality isn't always pretty.

The silence out of the UN should not be surprising - but it has been irrelevant and fundamentally broken for decades - not unlike it's failed predecessor, the League of Nations.

What is being missed is that the President defined this specific action as a 'red line' - and drew that line in the sand.  He has effectively boxed himself into a situation (from multiple missteps) where there is no way to 'win'...and just confirms to our enemies that he is incompetent, naive, and weak when it comes to his foreign policy vision and principles.

Helping either side in Syria, outside of humanitarian aid, is ridiculously short sighted. Giving either side weapons to prolong the fighting is not just bad foreign policy, but evil. Both sides are murdering civilians.

Someday, one side or the other will win and expose the atrocities of the other side. We don't want to give legitimacy to those in the Middle East who blame us for all suffering. We should be as uninvolved in Syria as possible.

Currently 7.4% per annum (running year, or 7.1% same month/2yrs) without gas, 8.7% if I include gas. I take out gas because where I buy it really matters, if I'm up on the farm - its 20c cheaper then the city and that skews the rate.  I should have segregated gas by locale when I started.

350 The EU is all hot to get involved (with mainly American troops) in Syria, it may be due to a huge reserve of natural gas in Kuwait and northern Saudi Arabia

That could be why the Saudis are supporting jihadists in Syria and opposing them in Egypt. Syria is a Russian client that happens to be in the way of a pipeline supplying natgas to the EU. Suddenly Putin doesn't have a monopoly on gas to the Continent

That's most likely the real "gas" that's the issue here

Every war is about economics. Or as the Corleones would say "this is business, not personal"

Rebels Poisoned By Own Side
AP-The chemical attack of three weeks ago
in Damascus, Syria, has been shown to have been
the work of militants opposed to Assad's regime
but also at odds with native rebels, the UN reported
today.  The militants, claimed by some to be associated
with al-Queda, were found to have detonated stolen rockets
from a cache of chemical tipped weapons believed to
have been manufactured in Iraq, and then blaming the Syrian
government.

I could go back and do it - but I would have to read and tag hundreds of transactions.  There isnt an easy way to parse out by location of the purchase in the transaction records either,  Next upgrade cycle, I'll give it a shot or just use a specific card for all my rural gas purchases - they're all at the same station and they have card - so I'll just get their card for use up there - and aren't local down here so it should segregate the data effectively.

400 72hr rule on this story.

First, the number of dead, the dirty secret of chemical weapons is that they really aren't that effective.  In order to kill hundred, the people would have had to have been grouped in a contained air space(s) - like bomb shelters or stadiums.  Possible, but not likely.  It's simply easier to kill people with good old HE rounds, rather then going thru all the hassle associated with chemical weapons.

Second, their are enough guys running around in Syria who know how to collect proper samples - it doesn't take that long to analyze them.  Real data please.

Posted by: Lucky Pierre at August 21, 2013 11:32 AM (5fSr7)

Mustard and chlorine gas deployment in WWI created a repugnance against its use that has persisted to this day, with reason. Killing people like bugs in a jar may not seem any more vile than blowing them up or shooting them, but it is. Nerve gas, especially, is about as awful as it gets. There is also a fun little variant called 'blister agent', while we're on the subject. You should look it up.

War has rules. Those rules don't seem to be followed much anymore (except by us), but they exist for a reason.

Generating a lack of traffic is the point. I don't think there's going to be any physical damage from not accessing the internet, even en masse.

I remember Michael Totten writing that a lot of Israelis would love to be left wing Scandinavians or the sort of reflexively leftists you meet in academia but the fact that they are surrounded by millions of people who want them dead and work constantly for their extinction forces them to take a more pragmatic view of human nature and of their defense policy.

The way I think this probably works out is that when the US has a Republican president who is friendly to Israel, the confidence they feel leaves them free to indulge their inner left wing socialist doushebag.  When there is a Democrat who is hostile to Israel in the White House, Israelis are forced to do what they must rather than what they want.

1) Believe it or not, there actually ARE   normal people in Syria     who    just want to live their lives without being shot at every day.    They would suffer from a chemical weapons attack just as much as the bad guys.

2) Chemical weapons      are awful, awful things.  They kill    and maim     in    excruciating ways, and not quickly either.   The last thing    anyone should do is say, "Meh, it's okay that they were used in this case   because look who was killed.   Who cares?"    That's just a way of mainstreaming their use.

1) My mother in law lived in Vienna,  in Penzing near the rail yards, when Austria was a part of Nazi Germany.  From what I have heard from other people as well as her own accounts, she was never a Nazi or particularly enthusiastic about the Anschluss.  My father flew in a B-24 and on several occasions bombed the rail yards in Vienna.  Given the accuracy limits of 1940s technology that means that the bombs fell all over the general area in and around the rail yards.  My dad never felt even a bit sheepish about what he did.

2) I have known people who were accidentally poisoned with nerve gas.  They went through the whole convulsions, and rigid muscles thing but they were hit with an atropine injector in time and survived the experience.  They all claimed that they could not remember anything between feeling faint and blurry vision and waking up in a hospital.

Actual civilians should leave the hot fighting zones quickly as possible. 481 The story is by James Corsi. When someone other than that nut confirms anything he says with evidence get back to me Posted by: Nevergiveup at August 21, 2013 11:58 AM (9Xc5j) ******************** It's not just Corsi reporting this about Malik Obama (Barry's half brother): "The former Chancellor of the Constitutional Court of Egypt and current adviser, Tahani Al-Jebali stated that the reason the United States cannot fight the international organization of the Muslim Brotherhood is because the brother of U.S. President Barack Obama is the architect of the investments for the international organization of the Muslim Brotherhood. Jebali stated she would like… “…to inform the American people that their president’s brother Obama is one of the architects of the major investments of the international organization of the Muslim Brotherhood.” Al-Wafd, another prominent Arabic source is reporting similar news. Under the title, “Obama’s Brother is Muslim Brotherhood” and on Egypt’s National Television, (Tahani Al-Jebali) stated: “There are many reasons why the United States does not take a strong stand against the Muslim Brotherhood.” One such reason, which she says is a gift to the American people, is that Obama’s brother is a major operative with the Muslim Brotherhood in that he is the conduit for funneling monies for the organization. She also added… “Documents from the Egyptian national security must be brought into the light in order to confirm that this international organization (Muslim Brotherhood) shows exchanges with the CIA so as to reach the power center of (Egypt).”

482 Surely no one with half a brain would advocate US troops on the ground in Syria. The US Military Brass certainly are opposed to involvement in Syria. Even the Air Force strongly opposes the idea of bombing Syria, and since April 2012 has issued long editorials explicitly describing how badly our Air Force is outworn having "carried the lion's share of the load" performing all of NATO's War v. Libya, with no subsequent replacement parts or new aircraft or BOMBS. Read, "Syria Is Not Libya" in that issue for starters. Aside from being more than the Air Force can effect without tragic results of our own in the bombing raids, Syria's urban population is NOT segregated. There's no way to attack someone deemed an enemy without killing more people who are not involved politically in any way. That's from the air OR on the ground. And the Syrian people would all turn against US military troops as the invaders. So any ground troops would face immense odds, and cause a massive augmentation of human tragedy, with Syrians regardless of political ideology all resentful of US presence. Take all those reasons to stay OUT of Syria and leave them to themselves. Compound them with sequestration. Our troops will be the ones suffering the worst while the Brass, Government and military-industrial Corporatists squeeze financially broken taxpayers for more funding. All this while ObamaCare consumes our federal taxes.

483 I say let them kill each other off and be done with it. We don't need anymore young people going in harms way for the stupidity of Congress. Just because they say chemical weapons were used does not make it so. They have been lying for years, why should this be any different?

Posted by: Rockhound at August 21, 2013 12:29 PM (+NNrU)

484 I'm skeptical of this claim.  If they've been exposed to gas at all, it's just as likely that it was tear gas.  And what of the cameraman?  Presumably he has been exposed to, since he is in the vicinity of a very recent attack, yet there is no evidence that he is convulsing why filming.  Granted, he could be wearing a mask, but that would indicate he knew that he was going to be gassed, making it more likely that this was a rebel setup.  Anyway, even if it's a legit poison gas attack, the rebels could be just as responsible as the government.  They overan an air force base some weeks ago in the north of the country that had stocks of wmds, so they could have launched the attack themselves, possibly aiming for Assad's presidential palace and accidentally hitting their own supporters, or possibly attacing their own supporters on purpose to lure us into the fray.  Either way, keep the US out of freakin Syria's civil war.

485 285 Buzzion Though I wish there were, there aren't a few off hand words to illustrate how simplistically erroneous is your "explanation" of what everyone in common is supposed to know as "actually true" or something. Studying the evolution of the Hebrew gods (Genesis) into the singular Yahweh is enlightening. "Allah" is just a conjunction of the Arabic words, "The God" as experienced by Muhammad (for what it's worth as revelation) that bears more than a strong resemblance to the old testament angry and jealous God. On the racist superiority complex, consider how neatly the Jews establish their own claim of global superiority as the (only) "chosen" children of God. If indeed chosen, then chosen to save mankind? Yet there has never been Jewish proselytizing. Rather, containment. To save themselves? Go figure, the false sense of racial superiority as a master race, whether Jewish by specific tribe/region (in Israel today, Germanic Jews are "better than" any other Jewish population from around the world), German by Aryan genetics, Asian by specific regional race/tribe, Indian by specific (Aryan) caste, or ME by specific tribe or affiliated Islamic sect. Not all Jews and not all Israelis adhere to the perpetuation of Zionism. "Antisemitism" and "Anti-Zionism" are not the same. Patriotic enthusiasm goes too far when it ignores the inalienable rights of all people, and fails to respect and observe national boundaries. We're in a twisted time. A relevant futurist view where governments failed and corporations usurped governance over all people: Continuum.
