Claude Moore Colonial Farm is Fighting Back
— Gabriel Malor

Ace covered the NPS-forced closure of the privately funded, privately operated living history museum Claude Moore Colonial Farm. The Farm is fighting back.

Managing director Anna Eberly says that the Farm is pursuing a legal remedy thanks to a generous volunteer. "We believe, according to our lease with the National Park Service, that we have both a right and a duty to be open to the public," she wrote to supporters.

In a separate email, Eberly explained that the Farm's lease agreement "states that we will operate the Farm and open it to the public and the only thing [the NPS] will provide is police protection if needed." Notably, the Farm hasn't relied on NPS police because Fairfax County PD is closer and more convenient.

Unlike federal employees, the Farm isn't going to get any money back when the shutdown is over. So far, according to Eberly, the Farm has lost $15,000 in operating income due to the shut down. That's from cancelled rentals, admissions, sales, and program fees.

Today, the Farm has declared a "Freedom from Tyranny Colonial Rally" to take place in front of the Department of the Interior at noon. The invitation is below the fold.

The Claude Moore Colonial Farm at Turkey Run (McLean, VA) is a living-history museum that portrays family life on a small farm just prior to the Revolutionary War, ca.1771.

The Farm has achieved national recognition for its innovative educational programming that uses the 18th-century Farm as an authentic representation of colonial agricultural and social history - to provide perspective and context for present day life.

The Farm is a completely independent entity, leasing land from the National Park Service but drawing no resources, personnel, and most importantly, currently drawing no money from the NPS or the American people. It funds itself completely through its school, community, and public programs.

However, this government shutdown has caused the NPS to shut down this Farm, despite its independence, proximity to extreme security, and privately paid full staff. Without income from school groups, public programs, and public entry, the Farm will not meet its bills and will have to shut down forever.

This Colonial Rally announces the value of the Farm, telling the NPS, representatives, and your community that this valuable, educational, local, and fun resource needs to be released from the government shutdown - since it is not operated by the United States government.

I hope the weather cooperates.

For the morons not from around the DC area: Claude Moore Colonial Farm rocks.  It's like the exhibits you can find in Colonial Williamsburg, only you're not in Williamsburg.  If you're in the DC area and you don't want to do - or have already done - the regular tourist stuff, check out Claude Moore.

However, this government shutdown has caused the NPS to shut down this Farm, despite its independence, proximity to extreme security, and privately paid full staff. Without income from school groups, public programs, and public entry, the Farm will not meet its bills and will have to shut down forever.

This goes back to what I've been saying since the beginning.   Federal workers who have been   furloughed will get their back pay,   but there   will be no back pay and no recouping of lost income for the private businesses that are being illegally shut down to satisfy Obammy's   spiteful petulance.   This is a time of    year when a lot of these businesses make their money, and Obammy   is making sure they end up in the red.

Obammy is DELIBERATELY sabotaging the economy,  and he's not doing it with any fanciful political language like he trots out to    support   his fucking failure of a     health insurance law,   or his godawful   subsidies for failing    "green" businesses.    He's doing it by flat out saying,  "Fuck you.   I'm the Preezy and I'll tell you when you get to   open and when you have to close."

That's tyranny, straight up.

119 What I can't figure, is the sheer volume of tricks and manipulations that have to be going on to keep the student loan bubble from bursting.

There's at least $1 trillion out there. And, as we saw from the housing and financial collapse, the real number is 2 to 3 times that.

Even amongst the conservatives of good standing here, there are many.

And the fact that those carrying the largest burden are the one's most likely to be unemployed or underemployed is a bigger time bomb.

The JEF and the other Dems keep talking about how we can't default--what they are really saying is, "let us kick it down the road a bit so you can take the blame."

Because the only way out of all of this debt--public and private--is a huge ass default; it is mathematically impossible for us to pay back all of this cumulative debt.

184 This is where you find out if your local LEOs are any good, or if they're cowed by the Feds. Funny thing about Fairfax County's Sheriff's Office: Since we have a police department run by the county, the sheriff's employees pretty much only run the jail and serve process. I've been served three times by them. None of the documents were for me. Two were for completely different addresses. One was for a former homeowner. Twice I came home from work to find documents taped to my front door. Once I happened to see a sheriff's car leaving my driveway. When I went out to see what it was, there was an envelope taped to my door. I guess no-knock is for more than just raids.

The access road to the farm actually runs right along the border of the CIA HQ.  You can glimpse the main building from that road.  The friendly and helpful CIA security folks have been known to tailgate people driving out of the farm's property to make sure they go on their way.

227 How does a family of 3 with 1 income of $50K even eat? WIC and SNAP, comrade. Actually, it's not that hard. You eat a lot of chicken (still reasonably priced) and hamburger (rather than roast or steak). You eat Ramen and mac & cheese (the generic kind). Beans & rice or beans & cornbread (depending on your cultural background). Clip coupons. Never (or at least virtually never) go out to eat. Keep a budget. Don't buy things you don't need. Of course, I say that in relatively low COL DFW Texas. For our friends in the North East, or out on the Left Coast? I couldn't tell you.

228 I think the Dems are severely underestimating just how bad this is getting for them.

The FB page for the comments on the TX park closure are calling the JEF a tyrant several time--and most of the readers are libs; none are saying shit.

In fact, scanning the leftists on the FB (most of whom I blocked), they aren't saying shit.

Which means, A) the Dem talking point haven't came out yet to parrot and B) shit is so bad, they can't figure out what to say.

Five years ago, they could have at least rallied around a "Bush Bad, Obama Good!" chant in no time flat until they figured out what to say--now they've got nothing.

Here in NoVa, Giant used to carry Boar's Head in their deli cases while Safeway carried Dietz and Watson. Giant switched to Dietz and Watson about ten years ago. I wonder if that has anything to do with it.

279 Oh speaking of good chicken- I did this "on the fly" a week or two back, and it was so big a hit I was forbidden from making it this week (my wife is out of town for most of the week for a friend's wedding). Chicken (I used frozen tenders 'cause its what I had. Next time I'm using fresh breasts- probably butterflied). A little bit of season (that would be salt & pepper) on the chicken. Then I put some garlic in some balsamic vinegar and let that simmer for about 10 minutes. Then I put in about a half-cup of cherry jam (home made, yum!) and about an equal amount of Parmesan/Romano cheese (just from one of those bottles- fresh grated would probably be better) and let that melt in and cook down for about another 5 - 10 minutes. Finally, put that on the chicken and cook until done. I think I did 350F for 20-ish minutes for the tenders, but that could be wrong).

327 Well great News for some of us: Commissaries are back to their normal operating schedule, said Defense Commissary Agency spokesman Kevin Robinson. But it may take three to five business days to get the shelves fully stocked, depending on the size of the store and location. Officials have to restart the supply line after stores were closed starting Oct. 2 because of the government shutdown. Officials are asking customers to be patient as the stores go through this short period of adjustment, he said. But shelves should be fully stocked by the end of the week, he said. On Saturday, Secretary of Defense Chuck Hagel announced that most DoD civilians who had been placed on emergency furlough would be asked to return to work beginning this week.

They need to bring camera crews and tell people that all of these closures are because of Barry and his pettiness and the only reason this is being done is because he is trying to use it for political pressure to get his way. IDK. That's a high-risk proposition. Right now, we're succeeding (which is not to say "winning") by blaming Harry Reid and the Democrats in the Senate. And it's making Harry all kinds of petulant. If we shift focus to TFG, then there's the opportunity for a "Can they make up their minds?" narrative from the Dems as well as having to take into account the Cult of Personality which still (somehow) exists around the SCOAMT. At the very least we need him to veto something before we pivot to that.

391 How does a family of 3 with 1 income of $50K even eat? Posted by: tangonine at October 07, 2013 11:17 AM (x3YFz) joncelli's right that the Dollar Store sells very inexpensively. Detergents and the misc. household items, especially. If it's crunchy breakfast the kids want from a box, even brand names go on sale at grocery stores. Don't buy crap, especially if you're on a tight budget. And obviously, don't eat out. Groceries: Organize Your Week's Menu and stick to the tried/true shopping list of necessities. The less processed, the more nutritional value retained in the food. The less handling, the less contaminates. I've noticed that dried fruits can cost less or the same per pound than "fresh", and you get more nutrients from a concentrated handful of raisins than one handful of grapes. Dehydrated fruit not only keeps longer, but packages more easily without getting squished in a lunch box. Breakfast? Buy and prepare raw grains, REAL cereal. The less processing of the grain, the longer it satisfies the appetite, also providing more nutrition. You can boil the rice or wheat in advance, and reheat with milk/sugar for breakfast. Old Fashioned Rolled Oats are a breeze each morning to cook and eat within 5 minutes if you're in a hurry. Some like pancakes. Buttermilk Muffin and oatmeal breakfast cookie recipes are simple to prepare in advance, and the remaining batter stays refrigerated air tight a few weeks until consumed. Dinner Pasta is a breeze to boil. It takes nearly as long to defrost the frozen noodles as it would have to boil fresh pasta which doesn't require nuking the food inside plastic for consumption.

403 The folding is about timing and placement of the ingredients. Make sure you wait until when there's very little liquid egg still on top, turn the pan around a little and you'll sometimes see a "natural" axis to fold it on, make sure you've loosened the omelet half you intend to lift thoroughly, then commit to doing, kinda quick like, even if it lands a bit off center you can nudge it to make it look even. Make sure all the ingredients are a bit off the line you intend to fold or they'might poke through and leak. Don't cook it at too high a temp. Medium should do. Use the spatula but don't be afraid to use your bare hand to assist.

You know, the amber alert website being down is Tre Suspicious.

Unless, perhaps, it's the case that federal employees take calls that originate from people reporting something and they find the number on the website.

My intuition is that the webserver is humming along serving the 'we're closed' sign when it could just as well be serving whatever web apps they have on the amber alert site.

They just want to make it hurt and blame the hurt on the 'Rethugs.'

471 COPENHAGEN (Reuters) – The head of NATO expressed concern on Monday over Turkey’s decision to co-produce a missile defense system with a Chinese firm, saying he expected Ankara to choose a system that was compatible with those of other allies. Turkey has said it is likely to sign a $3.4 billion missile defense deal with a Chinese firm that is subject to U.S. sanctions, although its decision is not yet final. The United States has expressed serious concerns to Turkey, saying the Chinese missile defense system would not work with NATO systems. NATO Secretary-General Anders Fogh Rasmussen said choosing a defense system was a national decision. “What is important for us is that the system acquired by the individual country … must be able to work and operate with the systems in other countries. I expect that Turkey will also comply with that,” the former Danish prime minister told Reuters, speaking in Danish. “I of course expect that each allied nation makes sure of this. It comes with being a NATO member,” Rasmussen said, speaking on the sidelines of a conference in Copenhagen. Rasmussen said he understood Turkey had not yet made a final decision and was still in talks on the new defense system. Turkey’s Defense Ministry said last month it favored China Precision Machinery Import and Export Corp’s (CPMIEC) FD-2000 missile defense system over more expensive rival systems from Russian, U.S. and European firms. The United States announced sanctions on CPMIEC in February for violations of the Iran, North Korea and Syria Nonproliferation Act. NATO diplomats say buying a system that did not work with NATO systems would hamper the ability of NATO allies to work together, undermining a principle of the 28-nation alliance. CYBER CONCERNS Some NATO diplomats said integrating a Chinese system into NATO’s defenses would raise cyber-security concerns and issues about NATO swapping technical data with a Chinese firm. Fuck Turkey and kick them out of Nato

Could be.  I  think the man was active from  about 1932 through 2008, so for all we know the rules would have been different at the time, perhaps even including among one's interceptions all those incidents when an opposing player rips the head off the receiver, thus taking possession of either the ball or the man's still bleeding scalp.

I used to work for a partner who was a very creative master of pleadings. His client could be clearly in the wrong, and he'd still find a way to frame the dispute as an action with his client as the plaintiff. He usually dreamed up a dec action.

Posted by: Chris at October 07, 2013 10:28 AM (HmYx2)"

I am not sure that it would be legal to deny Feds the use of the state and country roads.  As I understand it, anybody safely operating a licensed and registered vehicle can drive on those roads.

Now, assuring that those Fed vehicles are legally licensed and registered and that they can pass a field safety test is a matter that local law enforcement can legally do.  If the operators of those vehicles cannot prove that their vehicles comply with all relevant laws, they can probably be directed to follow the local police to the police station for a more complete investigation.  If they have safety violations such as burned out lights or insufficient tire tread, their vehicles should probably be towed to the police impound lot for safety reasons.

Heat until dissolved pour into 5 gallon bucket with 3 gallons water, 1/2 cup each Borax, Laundry Soda and TSP. Stir until dissolved. Let sit overnight to gel. This lasts our family of 3 for 3 1/2 months and my wife is a Clean Freak when it comes to the laundry. I figure I have about $2 bucks in that recipe.

635 Broncos are a 28 point favorite against the Jaguars. Only a 28 point favorite? I'm surprised.

637 316 302 I don't know how old you are, but in the early 1980s when I moved to Northern CA it was not that common to hear Spanish.
By the time I left in 2001, it seemed as though it was not that common to hear English. Posted by: CharlieBrown'sDildo at October 07, 2013 11:45 AM (/kU/5)

There were parts of Hayward that were all Spanish when I left in 1977. And my old apartment place in Union City is now all Spanish. Posted by: Vic at October 07, 2013 11:48 AM (zZbNF)

2 years ago in the "historic pico-union" area of L A I heard a black lady complaining about "all the mexicans" moving into "her" neighborhood. Good times, good times...

638 Next step, call the insurance companies "middlemen" and propose reforming Obamacare by "eliminating the middlemen".

It worked for student loans.  Now the government can take its "Diversity First" policy and cut off funds to any school that doesn't capitulate to enforced mediocrity.

It doesn't take much imagination to envision how the same coercive power will be used when nonpersons need medical care.

We have a federal government that considers us its enemy.

639 "619 Good morning. Just got up, drinking coffee and perusing the news.

I'll say again what I said a couple of days ago. As far as the shut-down of the national parks are concerned, expect this regime to make some of the closings permament. This is just too much of a dream-come-true for the militant enviromentalists.

Which is yet another argument in favor of handing out federal government owned land in 40 acre plots as slavery reparations.  Most of the new owners will be happy to continue the current contracts with the companies that operate the parks and pay rent for the privilege.  Some might decide to cut timber on their property or even to move in and homestead.  All the new owners will have to deal with the EPA officials who will be crawling over their property looking for infestations by endangered species.  Can you envision a political spectacle more entertaining than a black-green death match?

643 This is just too much of a dream-come-true for the militant enviromentalists. My only experience with the Park Service peeps was on a deserted beach in New Jersey. They drove up in a pair of brand new Jeeps at about 45 mph. Driving in the area between the low and high tide area. Walky talkies crackling. Indignant as all get out that *I* had pulled a boat up on shore and was walking in the area between the low and high tide area, because some stupid bird lays its eggs in that area. See, it's fine for *them* to drive over the birds eggs, I wasn't allowed. They need their budget slashed to nothing. Nada. Zilch. Until they have to pick up birds eggs off the beach for subsidence.

'you stay classy Denver'

I tweeted back that instead of getting pissy maybe they should score more points

Putting former Solicitor General Kagan onto SCOTUS probably killed any chance of Obama being allowed to make a third nomination during his presidency.

I don't believe the WH blinked.  The Republicans (probably by accident) created a situation where the CR fight and the debt ceiling fight got smeared together into one big shut down instead of a shutdown over the debt ceiling.   The president can always weather a 3 day shutdown and come out on top.  After that things get less certain and blame starts to get shared.

Obama wants a "reset" and a new shut down fight where he will frame at being entirely about the debt ceiling and America's credit rating.   Right now, that has been lost to the all-important low information constituency.

649 Regarding closures Claude Moore Colonial Farm, according to the Washington Times, two high profile hotels in San Francisco are still operation because they are lessors, not concessions. Sounds like the Colonial Farm should be treated the same way. http://www.washingtontimes.com/news/2013/oct/6/national-park-rangers-ordered-to-keep-visitors-out/

650 Glad to see this farm fighting back -- and even more glad to see them calling out the administration for its TYRANNICAL behavior. We need more of this from Americans.

Posted by: Trivial Pursuer at October 07, 2013 10:38 AM (/sohm)

651 Since this Administration is running a criminal enterprise out of the White House, staffed by liberal Progressive of very stripe, this isn't surprising.  But it must be brought to an end.

This situation is ALL at the foot of the Democratic Party, which is a reprehensible collection of thugs who do nothing but aggrandize themselves, in their own eyes, while anyone with a brain understands who and what they are--and it isn't much.

The sooner these thugs are thrown out of the White House and halls of the Federal government, the better.  MUCH better.  And some need to be put on a bus heading for Chicago--on a one-way ticket from Washington.
