It was an ordeal but the IRS people with whom I dealt treated me decently enough. I showed no attitude. I did what I was told and gave them whatever information they asked for. I came out of it owing a few thousand dollars from consecutive long form deduction errors made in 2006, 2007 and 2008, when I was making my living solely from a freelance graphic design and illustration business I was running out of my home studio. While it was going on, I knew I was dealing with a federal government that could, on a whim, take everything I owned and everything I will ever own.

The IRS has the resources to audit, ruin, and/or imprison any number of people who should decide to engage in this type of civil disobedience. Any number, no matter how many millions took that route. Since you would make of yourself an instant felon, you would also lose your vote and I'm pretty sure they wouldn't mind if you did. Bad idea.

The thing is, if the govt keeps pointing at producers and telling everyone else they are evil, they will eventually comply and opt out. Card's a Democrat.  He obviously has some LDS views that don't agree with lefty positions writ-large (abortion and same sex marriage, for instance), and he supported the invasions of Iraq and Afghanistan, but he's registered with the Ds and not the Rs.

The thing to keep in mind is that while Latter-Day Saints have conservative social mores, and thus pre-disposed toward the Republicans, that doesn't guarantee that the rest of their political philosophy will go the same way.  As a Latter-Day Saint living in Southern California, I know quite a few Mormons who are liberal.  And one oddity to keep in mind is that McCain apparently had a larger percentage of Mormons vote for him than Romney did (a couple of percentage points, iirc).  I'm not sure what to make of that.

I think the union contracts already have things that prohibit that sort of activity.  Puts too much stress on the poor workers, or that sort of thing.  Besides, they can't fire anyone anyway even when they do catch employees red-handed working shifts that consist of an hour of work and seven hours downloading porn.

Was at a meeting the other day, when  the topic of delusions came up (don't ask why), and the examples  used were: 1. thinking people are out to get you, or 2. thinking people are listening in on your phone calls.

The speaker said something to the effect of "which turns out to be not so delusional after all." 

Interesting reactions.  About a third of the room laughed knowingly, about a third got that snarly look of disapproval, and about a third were confused to the point of having no idea what that meant.

These are highly educated people, by the way.  Not smart necessarily, but educated.

That leg is one of the more bizzare stories to come out of the OKC bombing.  I know that  before  any  of the victims started getting buried they had two legs.  One of them was placed in the casket with a female soldier.  After DNA tests, it was discovered that they had put the wrong leg in the casket and so they had to disinter the soldier and replace the leg.

Phillip K. Dick, an amazing and very talented man, operated under the assumption that he was gifted with a direct revelation from God. I don't think he was 'political' by any definition of the term. To my knowledge, it was never identified, and after DNA samples were stored, it was cremated and the ashes put in storage.
