— andy "I've got a lot of problems with you people, and now you're gonna hear about it" ~ Frank Costanza
Colin Powell's obviously an adherent of the sect, but he missed the holiday. It didn't stop him from airing his grievances with the GOP today, though. And man, are there a lot of them.
"There's also a dark vein of intolerance in some parts of the party ... What do I mean by that? What I mean by that is they still sort of look down on minorities."...
"When I see a former governor say that the president is 'shuckin' and jivin'.' That's a racial-era slave term," [Andy -- he's referring to Sarah Palin, who he didn't have the stones to name]
...
"He didn't say [Obama] was slow, he was tired, he didn't do well; he said he was 'lazy,' ... Now, it may not mean anything to most Americans, but to those of us who are African Americans, the second word is "shiftless," and then there's a third word that goes along with it." [Andy -- ditto for John Sununu]
...
"The whole birther movement: Why do senior Republican leaders tolerate this kind of discussion within the party? ... I think the party has to take a look at itself."
It sure seems Colin Powell, self-proclaimed "moderate Republican" and two-time Obama voter, has a lot of problems with the GOP. Here, let him sum it up.
"In recent years, there's been a significant shift to the right, and we have seen what that shift has produced: two losing presidential campaigns," Powell said. "I think what the Republican Party needs to do now is take a very hard look at itself and understand that the country has changed. The country is changing demographically. And if the Republican Party does not change along with that demographic, they're going to be in trouble."Powell said the Republican Party in addition to being the party of lower taxes, has become cast at the party of the rich. He said that Republicans need to take up education, immigration and climate change policy before the next election.
Education, immigration and climate change policy? Are there cue cards that get held up in front of every Sunday show-appearing "moderate Republican", because that's what all these guys say. And I'm sure it's racist to point that out.
According to Powell, everything is apparently racist. Referring to a white guy as "lazy" means he's lazy. Referring to a black guy as "lazy" means The N-Word™. Does someone have a diagram of how this works, because I swear I can't keep it straight.
But it sure seems like if you default to "all criticism of Obama is racist" you'll be right 99 times out of 100.
I found the "lazy" example particularly interesting coming from Powell, though. If you'll remember back to the campaign (sorry ... open wound there), John Sununu, the target of Powell's anonymous swipe this morning, said the only reason Powell voted for Obama was because he was black. I guess Powell's been carrying that little chip around on his shoulder for a while. (yeah, yeah, chip ... shoulder ... racist!)
Funny, but you know who else said Colin Powell voted for Obama because he was black? Colin effing Powell, that's who.
... And at the end, I cannot say I was totally colorblind. ...
As a moderate Republican, Powell clearly came to the conclusion that the policies Obama supported were more in line with his own than those advocated by the firebreathing, far right-wing candidates we've nominated in the last two elections ... John McCain and Mitt Romney. So the non-colorblindness didn't really put it over the top, you see.
The funniest part of the whole thing to me though, was Powell's complaint about the birthers being allowed to voice their opinions and his desire that the GOP shut them up. If they had that power, I'd much rather they apply it to "Republicans" who only get invited to the Sunday shows to trash the party.
The cringeworthy interview with unindicted gun criminal David Gregory appears below the fold.

Not only is Colin Powel a Democrat with an R after his name (DIABLO) he is stupid as well. If he thinks the last two campaigns were shifts to the right then he is a damn communist.

I did too. Sure, it helped that he was black and I wanted a black man to succeed on the GOP ticket, but far more than that was that he was a successful general and extremely well spoken. No, not well spoken for a black man, Mr. Matthews, well spoken, period. He was a natural on the talk shows, although I'll also grant that they didn't press him as hard as they did others.
This is what makes me very concerned when I hear people who want the nom to go to Rubio or Cruz or other relatively untested people. I want someone with a track record in governance, not just lots of nice speeches. The country has tried that and it hasn't worked out so well. I'd rather have someone a bit more towards the middle if it means I get the record of accomplishment that tells me he won't be a complete CF. High ranking generals are good politicians and good administrators, for the most part.
My policy preferences run more to the right, but electability depends in part on the ability to convince people you know what you're doing. At least it does for Republicans. We don't help ourselves by ignoring that fact.

Gee, what a surprise.
And any criticism of Powell from now on by the Republicans will be racist.
When the Left controls all the semantics of the debate, no wonder the Conservative Right cannot enunciate a clear argument in public.
Agreed that the betrayal of Libby was a big tell back in the day. Powell felt that he had been set-up and betrayed by Rumsfeld, Cheney and BOOOOSH in the intelligence briefing for Congress prior to the vote on OIF.
It's ugly, but I also suspect that Powell is also starting to get a little senile, although he does not appear to have lost mental acuity in his speech. He's now being played by the Left / Obama.

The WMD argument infuriated the left, who formerly ignored him as everyone should do, and they started making their usual immature and racist comments about him. Instead of turning on those cocksuckers, he wondered why they were saying all those mean things about him and ended up turning on Bush for "lying" to him and making him out to be a bad person. Powell and his catamite Armitage are directly responsible for Libby having been convicted. What matters now is what we are going to do. There are tens of millions of people who know what this country can be and will work and risk to make it great again.
The Immigration and Nationality Act of 1965 was the end of common sense and the end of this country. Gone were the selection of the best and brightest. It's selling points sound familiar.
"In order to convince the American populace - the majority of whom were opposed to the act - of the legislation's merits, its liberal proponents assured that passage would not influence America's culture significantly. President Johnson called the bill "not revolutionary"" via Wiki

Unchecked immigration of FSA types and progressive politics kinda wrecked Australia too. Its a shadow of its former self.

I've lost about every shred of respect I once hand for him. He was once seen as a straight-up patriot American. He might have had the GOP nomination in his hand, and the support of most veterans for it ... although to be fair, I think most of us did suspect him of being at least a little bit of a rear-echelon, political-type ... as well as likely being a beneficiary of affirmative action. But that was OK, since he did seem to have been at least competent. Those whose knowlege of upper-echelon military politics will likely have reasons to believe otherwise, though.
But he has chosen to throw in his lot with someone ... based on their mutual skin color, to enthusiastially support that person, and kick in the teeth those of the party that he once professed support for. There's a word for people like that, General P. It's on the tip of my tongue ...

Most accusations of racism are a along the lines of 'he said, she said'.
However, a simple litmus test for racism is if an accuser,
- self-identifies as Group A,
- accuses Not Group 'A' (call them Group 'B' <> Group 'A') of racism,
- based upon Group 'B' using a word originated by Group 'A'.
In this case, as we all know, "shuckin and jivin", is Jive.
The test works well with the N-bomb,
maybe not so well with honkie, red-neck (derogatory form), or cracker.

I remember Powell speaking at the Republican convention in 2000. That was a warning. His speech consisted as much lecturing the Republican party on its flaws as it did supporting the party. It was a tipoff of what to expect and it has been proven true.
Also, I think he believes he was "used" by W and Republicans to "hype the case" for WMD pre Iraq and holds a grudge for that, which has made him even more intolerant of anything Republican.
And why do none of these moderates NEVER throw one of their little hissy fits about Democrats? It's always their own party they lash out at. And has ANY Democrat other than Zell Miller (many years ago) ever tossed the Democrats under the bus? \

"There's also a dark vein of intolerance in some parts of the party ... What do I mean by that? What I mean by that is they still sort of look down on minorities."
Hey, Colin, maybe it's you that they look down on.
Just a thought.

Entitlement and aggrievement, like Powell, belong to the Democrat party. The rest of us know we have to work for what we want, not have it handed to us on the basis of our own specialness.

Maybe we should encourage ALL of the FSA to move there. Kind of a demographic ju-jitsu: encourage them to do what they want, which is actually what we want too.
Btw, is there anything more infuriating than lefty dirtbags fucking up a place, then noticing it's fucked up, moving on, and then agitating for exactly the same policies that fucked up the first place?
I say this as a native Californian who's watched his beloved state become infested with liberal cockroaches, who are now looking for another host state.

It's not a wholesale "ban". It's not the UK, they didn't pull that shit. It's restricted etc. You CAN have them, even semi's, you got to jump through the hoops though. It's not that hard to keep bolts, in particular. There's an article today bemoaning how gun ownership in Australia is higher now than it's ever been. But hey, I hear you, it's bullshit that there are ANY restrictions. Used to be you could have SMG's and MG's. Point being you're not necessarily helpless. You have to dance a bit for it though.

Colon Bowel was asked by Charlie Rose why he mispronounces his first name: he said that reporters always would shout "Hey, Colon!" instead of "Hey, Colin! [Collin]"; therefore, he gave up trying to correct them, and just assumed the moniker.
Also, he's Extremely Skilled at bureaucratic "wetwork" [backstabbing]. Which is how he's as prominent as he is today.
