Coming Home
— Dave in Texas

Apollo_11_crew_in_quarantine (440x440).jpg

Today, these years ago Michael Collins, Command Module Pilot, Edwin "Buzz" Aldrin, Lunar Module Pilot and Mission commander Neil A. Armstrong were on they're their (ok, shit.. got it) way back to earth.

It's hard to recall because it's not spoken of much, the years of preparation and testing. The Gemini program was mostly about how to dock spacecraft. Learning things.

There was drama on the landing. There was drama before the ascent from the moon too. "While moving within the cabin, Aldrin accidentally broke the circuit breaker that would arm the main engine for lift off from the Moon. There was concern this would prevent firing the engine, stranding them on the Moon. Fortunately a felt-tip pen was sufficient to activate the switch.[48] Had this not worked, the Lunar Module circuitry could have been reconfigured to allow firing the ascent engine."

It's also hard to imagine now, the "space race". Seems so quaint today in 2013, but there was a time when we as a nation asserted ourselves as a force not for enslavement or conquest but a beacon to the rest of the world. Apollo 11 was like a giant ad for "freedom". As was the NASA mission.

My .02 anyway.

Some years later this old man can still kick your ass.

26 It was an amazing accomplishment. About the only thing that the government did (alas, we have Muslim outreach) that was worth a damn. It could be argued that perhaps the government should not have been involved at all, that it should have been totally a private sector endeavor (as was early aviation), but the obvious national security implications (which is what the government is supposed to do) seem to nullify that. How great is was to be an American. That statement is now in doubt.

100 Does anyone else remember what happened 44 years ago last week? Ted Kennedy drove off the bridge, swam away, and left Mary Jo to drown in the car. Teddy K named one of his dogs Splash in honor of that. That man was a disgrace. Mark Levin talked about it and Rush did too, but Rush only talked about TeddyÕs neck brace. He mentioned the dog named Splash. No more than that, and that "that" is unlikely to sustantially grow more than it is now any time soon--or else it would have. It could grow more if they were given time to retrench and consolidate--a decade or so. They will not be given that time.

I am told that if you want to keep a public demonstration calm, one of the things you must do is to quietly let it be known that if trouble begins, EVERYONE is going to get booked, and those with open warrants will not be released.

For the likes of the NBPP, who very likely have open warrants, that's like advertising a vampire rally that will be sprayed with holy-water cannons. They'll stay _well_ clear of it.

Quannel X spoke out against the victim claiming she did not do enough to prevent herself from being gang raped. He later went on to claim the girl's parents were also responsible for her assault.

"It was not the young girl that yelled rape. Stop right there -- something is wrong, brothers and sisters", "Where was the mother? Where was the father?"

In November 2011, KHOU-TV, the CBS television affiliate in Houston, reported on complaints from individuals who asserted that they paid Quanell X for help they did not receive.[23] Sandra Laday, a notable community activist in her own right, asked Quanell X to help her in finding out about her own son's murder. After giving Quanell X $600 she received no help from him and said “I feel like I was taken advantage of.” Also, Hilda Pete, who was the mother of a murder suspect, asked Quanell X to help in getting her son off murder charges. She reportedly gave Quanell X $9,000 and asserts he did very little to help her and her son. Quanell X reportedly often asks for the money upfront and in cash. Pete was quoted as saying "He's a con artist" when speaking about Quanell X

408 I'm going to have to pay more attention to the schedule of upcoming rocket launches. I've missed several recently. It looks like the next Russian launch is a Progress cargo vehicle to the ISS on Saturday, July 27 at 4:45 pm EDT, which means a night launch at Baikonur. Since it's a launch to the ISS, it might be carried on NASA TV; if not, I'm sure a Russian website will have it. The next American launch is a Delta IV with a satellite on Thursday, August 8 at 8:29 pm EDT from Cape Canaveral, also a night launch. The ULA website will probably carry it live. I'll keep an eye on these and provide links when the time comes. Back in the 1960s and 70s, unmanned launches were hardly ever covered live by the TV networks. And I don't care what anyone says, I think it's pretty damn cool to be able to watch Russian launches live. Again, we couldn't do that back in the day.

411 I barely missed the last Great American Police Smackdown. 'Twas the big Iranian student protest in D.C., Summer of 1981 IIRC. I was living just outside Ft. Belvoir and my buddy from home kept urging me to go. It was all over the news for weeks beforehand. I did want kinda want to go and watch the whole thing. But I couldn't figure out a good place to watch it from so I stayed home. My Spider Sense told me that being in the wrong place in the wrong time would turn out very bad. The mounted police rode backup for half a flying wedge of cops with riot gear. They rolled everybody in the Mall up against buildings beating the hell out of them. As good as anything from Chicago. Two younger guys, both strangers, were trying help a woman change a flat on her car yesterday. They couldn't understand the jack (diagram on the side of the jack) so they used one of their own jacks, never mind her spare tire was flat as an old bicycle tire. One guy was gripping the jack with both hands while the other tried to crank it, on a hill, without the wheels chocked. They also couldn't break the lug nuts lose earlier. I walked up, and they asked if I knew anything about these things.

I gently instructed them to remove their hands from the jack so as not to be permanently maimed when the car rolled off the jack on the hill, and remove the jack, and that I would take over.

Thank you for registering your phone number with the National Do Not Call Registry. You successfully registered your phone number ending in 6161 on February 04, 2008. Most telemarketers will be required to stop calling you 31 days from your registration date.

Telemarketers are ignoring the list. Most of the big domestic telemarketers will get caught and fined if they do it, but not the third-world telemarketers. Bastids.

498 The one time I had a real crisis with a car, I had taken my girlfriend's ( now wife) car to the Cape, and the transmission basically disintegrated on 495. She was out of town, I had very little money, and I was halfway between home and destination. Statue pulls up, asks if I have AAA, I say yes, he smiles and tells me no problem, just wait a bit. Guy picked me and the car up, brought us both back to Worcester and I paid nada. Car was fucked, but my wallet was intact.

500 We just bought a Kubota B2620 with the front loader, 60" belly mower and turf tires. The price was just under $20k. Only had it a month but it's doing everything a hobby farmer needs to do so far. The quick attach for the front end loader is a breeze to hook up and unhook too. If you get one don't rely on the manual for how to do it watch this youtube.

505 Posted by: McGregor at July 21, 2013 08:32 PM (qo244) Thank you! I need a backhoe, too. I don't need the mower, we have a Grasshopper, but I suppose it wouldn't hurt. If it wasn't too godforsakenly hot, I could perhaps help him mow. I usually just reward him with a...... a hearty thank you dear, but maybe he'd rather have help. He doesn't mow all 12 acres, though.

------------------------

I have not cooked with one.   I love my Weber kettle, and the Green Egg needs a friggin forklift to move it from point A to point B if it can't be rolled there.

My nephew has one and loves it, but that's sort of like asking Jay Leno if he likes cars. My nephew is 23, stuck in a wheelchair for life due to a childhood brain tumor. Has the use of one arm and one leg, but is happy every day of his life and funny as hell. He LOVES to cooks and grill.

Don't overlook older "used" tractors.  They may not have all the bells and whistles, but they generally can do the job for a lot less $$ than new.  I am still using a 1957 Massey Ferguson (when it is not raining).  Buy from a reputable dealer of someone you know would be my advice.

580 Well, that sounds mighty cool! But it's MY tractor, not Thor's.

581 Please tell me you've seen the youtube video of the Filipino grandmother reading it? Posted by: BCochran1981 - Credible Hulk at July 21, 2013 09:09 PM (GEICT) OMG, that is teh cutest thing ever.

582 OMG, that is teh cutest thing ever. Posted by: Tammy sans Thor at July 21, 2013 09:17 PM (9HoO6) My girls' godmother is half filipino. Her mom is from the Philipines. Sounds just like that but not as old. It's awesome. The godmother is the one that showed us the vid.

583 I love how she's all "This is a bad book" but she keeps right on a-reading it!

584 584 I love how she's all "This is a bad book" but she keeps right on a-reading it! Posted by: Tammy sans Thor at July 21, 2013 09:19 PM (9HoO6) Ohhhhh...oooooh nooooo....is bad book...

585 558 550 MWR, I was reading my tweet line, I discovered that Lee Stranahan thinks JustUs Fo' Traybon is an honest intellectual exercise. Oddly the Cincy "intellectual and logical exercise on SYG" had at most 50 people. Posted by: sven10077@sven10077 at July 21, 2013 09:04 PM (LRFds) I'm sure this circus has set back the progress towards Ohio getting SYG as well.

587 Have you ever seen a boob tat, Berserker?

Posted by: Tammy sans Thor

Boobehs with tattoos?  Surely you jest. I'm an asshole metal guitar player, I seen enough boob tats to let leatherface reupholster the sistine chapel ceiling.

588 586 Born Lib,

I love the notion that people engaged in a protest based on a heady miix of racial anger, fucktard emotionalism trumping facts, and media whoring is amenable to swaying through facts and rhetoric....

Ohio used to be straight duty to retreat, I guess we're about to devolve to a "don't you dare defend yourself unless black" state.

589 Gotta tell ya, folks, even I'm surprised Jimmy and Rosalyn Carter are still alive.

At this point, I think they both might outlive George and Barbara.

I'm trying to figure out how the inherently vile Left will cover themselves in ignominy upon the death of the Arch-Rino GHWB. I have no doubt they will uh, ...rise to expectations.

590 Kubota is cheaper than the blue one or the green one. Posted by: DrCPainMD I don't know nuttin' about pricing, but we've had all three on my job, and i'd agree the Kubota is the one to buy. Ours don't get super heavy use (general campus grounds maintenance and snow removal when there's snow) but they pretty much get constant use. Not always gently.

591 Broken down in the middle of nowhere...... Life's great, ain't it?

592 Broken down for the second time....I'll get home eventually. Waiting for #2 son to deliver a new battery from another truck. Skeeters enter, stage right.
