Conservative'ish govt sweeps into power in Australia
— Purple Avenger

I figured the Aussies would eventually start coming to their senses and pull the eject handle on that lunatic Labor crew...and they did. ~52% majority. Not an overwhelming win, but a damned good start.

...Abbott, 55, built up a strong opinion poll lead on the back of promises to rein in government spending, scrap an unpopular tax on carbon emissions, and stop the flow of refugee boats arriving in Australia's northwest...

Here's the problem -- Americans aren't nearly as willing to call abject failure what it is as Aussies are. We've come to embrace the fail, perhaps even celebrate it to a degree. It takes Weiner class fail before Americans start to blanch a bit.

The funny thing about getting good service from any provider/supplier of goods, services, govt, etc is if you don't constantly expect it, and demand it, you gonna be getting the Weiner pretty much every time. Most people deliver what you'll tolerate, not what you actually want. If you want good service, don't tolerate bad service.

23 International Business Machines Corp. plans to move about 110,000 retirees off its company-sponsored health plan and instead give them a payment to buy coverage on a health-insurance exchange, in a sign that even big, well-capitalized employers aren't likely to keep providing the once-common benefits as medical costs continue to rise.

The move, which will affect all IBM retirees once they become eligible for Medicare, will relieve the technology company of the responsibility of managing retirement health-care benefits. IBM said the growing cost of care makes its current plan unsustainable without big premium increases.

Posted by: navycopjoe at September 07, 2013 08:51 AM (1MCcX)

57 The thing about disarming though, you have to start with the belief that there was something important about the way THIS country was founded, and the belief in an armed citizenry being a well-ingrained principle, enshrined in the Constitution.  Without that, we would have been disarmed by now too.

Why?

Because political "logic" goes that way.  People notice a problem (i.e. people getting shot and killed), politicians go the route of pandering to the most emotionally hostile, vocally rabid interest groups, and before rational people can stop them, we're living with a disarmed citizenry.

If the Aussies and the Brits could not stop that process, it's because they lacked  our founding principles, and our Constitutional protection.  And all we've done so far anyway, is slow down the process.  We haven't exactly stopped them.

72 My uninformed take on the Australian election: The Australians had a notably successful Liberal (the conservatives) government under John Howard for almost a decade. His party finally lost government in 2007 over a combination of a contentious change in workplace regulations and general exhaustion. Labor under Rudd took over. His government dismantled Howard's very, very successful policy of picking up illegal migrants at sea and shipping them to camps on Nauru; now they were permitted into Australia and the trickle of boats turned into a flood. Rudd was popular with the public but widely hated within the party; Julia Gillard's palace coup knocked him off, but the subsequent 2010 election left Labor without a majority. She ended up leading a coalition government with the Greens and a couple nominal independents from some of the most conservative electorates in the country. Her government soon became a puppet of the Greens leader Bob Brown, and brought in policies such as a carbon tax that Gillard had quite specifically run against in the election. Anti-business policies and runaway spending turned a surplus into a deficit, and some very visible corruption problems ate even further into Gillard's credibility. With an election looming the Labor hierarchy booted Gillard and reinstalled Rudd, still mistrusting him but hoping his public popularity might drag them over the finish line. Labor and their captive media have long painted a picture of Liberal leader and PM-elect Abbott - Catholic, a fitness buff, marathoner, firefighter and surf-rescue volunteer - as an extremist, a cartoon-superhero wannabe - and tried to paint the Liberal rise in the polls as the nefarious work of Rupert Murdoch. In any case, the election's outcome gives Abbott a solid majority to work with, but so far it looks to have fallen ten seats short of the stomping some of the polls had predicted. Rudd will get credit for having 'saved the furniture' - several Labor party leaders whose seats were thought to be lost or in grave jeopardy have pulled out wins in their districts. The Greens, unfortunately, seem to have held their one lower-house seat (Melbourne, the San Francisco of Australia), but otherwise bled voters as badly or worse than Labor. Billionaire Clive Palmer - hero or buffoon depending on who you listen to - set up a personal party, stuffed with relatives and flunkies, and appears to have won his own election to the House and at least one Senate seat for his party (Australian electoral rules are weird as hell even for the lower house and I can't even begin to explain how Senate elections work). The reviled 'independents' who threw over the interests of their districts to prop up the crypto-Green Gillard government are gone.

They can't experience "abject failure," because it's not about results for them; it's about the process. This is their religion. If they tax the rich, raise the minimum wage, promise more generous welfare benefits, give everyone "free" healthcare, decry the racism of white people (And by white people, they mean "all white people except me"), they have done their good works. They have succeeded, regardless of what the outcome is for the people of the country.

The only way they can see themselves failing is by giving up on their leftist policies. It's like any other religion - Stay true and faithful, and you can't fail.

Wow, they sure do dance around providing too many details, don't they?

Let's see, start with an  "anti-violence" vigil for a guy who was shot trying to rob a convenience store.  How about an  anti-robbing convenience store vigil instead?

Then move on to the decidedly silent discussion of the races of the various victims and perps.   I want skin colors listed.  The convenience store clerk, the guy he shot, the people holding the vigil, and the drive-by shooters.

Then we need gang affiliations to be spelled out.  This is a gang style move.  Wait for the one gang to all be gathered in one place (like a funeral or an anti-violence vigil), then the rival gang shows up and starts shooting.

Or we could pretend the "bad guy" in all of this is the guns themselves.

84 The more a country embraces the ideals of freedom, as the Anglosphere and America especially have, the greater the need of the Left to destroy and replace, rather than slowly mutate over time. In many countries, it is not necessary to overthrow the culture, but cause the culture can easily be brought into the fold of the Left. In the Anglo-sphere it takes the lobotomization of the country and culture. In the United States, it will take cultural euthanasia. But hey, at least the lobotomies are covered under ObamacareÂ…

111 I think Australia is a particularly sad case. It went from a country that seemed to represent the essence of freedom - individuality, risk-taking, the struggle against nature, a good-natured cynicism - and in just a couple of generations turned into a disarmed, politically correct, multi-culti nanny state hell.

I've always loved the idea of Australia so it breaks my heart to read when they prosecute a conservative writer for hate speech, pass a law preventing more than 1 child from blowing out birthday candles, give extra-special rights to native people and all the other assorted progressive bullshit.

I buy/watch a lot of Australian TV, or rather, I used to until the social justice drumbeat got almost too strong to bear. So, like us, their media is responsible for most of this. They just seem to be on a much faster trajectory than us.

120 Been giving his some thought, watching "Game of Thrones".  Here at my folks place in PHX, so I'm watching thru Amazon, season 1.

It's the Ruling Class that's the problem.  In this country we are center-right, as Limbaugh says; but the Ruling Class is Left & Hard Left.  It's what they think needs to happen to keep the peons in check.  Wasn't it William Penn, that said the population needed to be educated just enough to be ruled.  Or something like that.  We've had upward mobility thru capitalism.  Which pisses-off the aristocracy.  During the middle ages, didn't the merchant class get wealthier than the Nobles?  So the Nobles pass laws that only Nobles could wear purple, i.e. royalty.  Now, the middle-east is getting educated peasants, but no economy for them to better them selves.  Much like the Banana Republics of South America in the past.  For the most part people want to work, and benefit from it.  Sure there are some that want to be house cats, and be taken care of.  Not trying to start a dog vs. cat flame war.  But dogs want to be watch-dogs, protect, have a job for their food.  The Ruling Class of both parties want every thing to say as it is, THEM in charge.  Bread and Circuses, as long as we call the shots.  So, go for the LIV & FSA, to buy their love with there own money.  Always goo business to do what you want with somebody else money.  It's the lower classes that are becoming educated that spark Revolution.

The UK is trending conservative these days, and trying to shed layers of socialism.

Canada is under conservative leadership, and their economy is getting better each month.

Now, Australia is figuring out what's causing that headache.

This is encouraging...

Even though the media here will try to ignore this for as long as they can...we have to keep the fires lit and keep pointing out that socialism only creates decay and despair.

134 #31 - not ALL our firearms, you conspiracist dolt. There are a hell of a lot of bolt and lever action rifles and double-barrelled shotguns out there which will kill you just as dead as an AR-15, and heaps of pistols as well, believe it or not. And the commercial feral pest cullers still get to own semi-autos for their work if they wish.

It's not as bad as some people think. It could be a whole lot better, true, but it's not even as bad as some parts of the US right now.

#133 - We'd figured it out three years ago, but the Other Side back then told the mother of all lies that got them across the line, and then two turncoats stabbed their electorates in the back to deliver a minority government to the bunch of criminally incompetent slimeballs we've just finished voting out.

And by the way, by no means ALL Aussie beaches are topless. Do be careful about where you disrobe, ladies. Guys, think with your minds and not your dicks before you emigrate. :p

135 @133 - it's difficult to consider what passes for government in the UK as 'trending conservative'. There's a bit of fitful fiscal-con in Osborne, but for the rest Dave has been letting the LibDems run the place into the ground.

136 The reviled 'independents' who threw over the interests of their districts to prop up the crypto-Green Gillard government are gone.

Walked of their own accord before being turned out on their arses (as they well deserved to be).

Otherwise, and apart from the fact that Howard's government lasted ELEVEN years rather than the not-quite-ten specified, Poster #72 has summed it up pretty well. I might (as an Australian) take issue with a few of his/her interpretations, but these are differences of opinion that IMO fall within the scope of reasonable doubt.

137 I'm sure this new conservative coalition does not please everyone, but dispatching Labor is a hell of a good first step.

Conservatives in the US need to figure out what parts of their message sell and set aside some of the more polarizing shit.  Get rid of the Socon nonsense that only sells in the Old South (and not even there anymore) and find a new playbook.

The perfect is the enemy of the good, and I would be really pleased with just how good Abbot is.

Too bad we can't have a figure like him in the US.

"Here's the problem -- Americans aren't nearly as willing to call abject failure what it is as Aussies are. We've come to embrace the fail, perhaps even celebrate it to a degree. It takes Weiner class fail before Americans start to blanch a bit."

--------------------------

I do not think this is true. Okay let me rephrase that. Americans have not been exposed to critical thinking and analysis of the reasons for abject failure of liberal policies. When Detroit is in the news for its failures only Fox News has any commentary of why it failed. Every other channel ignores it or presents a defense of Detroit's failures. If Republicans point out the failure they are called racists and this seems to work. A great many otherwise sensible people in California have zero idea of what is actually causing all the problems. I have had to explain Barney style to people: These are California's policies and these are the effects. Then the light comes on but one at a time is not as effective as advocates being on the news. In San Diego there is some guy that looks like a Mexican Fred Flintstone, I see this dude at least once a quarter on the news pimping amnesty. The right side of the political spectrum needs to get busier in this aspect. If most Americans of good conscious and sound mind do not know why things fail then that is the Right's fault.

140 ** I'm sure this new conservative coalition does not please everyone, but dispatching Labor is a hell of a good first step. ** Oh, it doesn't - not by any means. There are some who would gaze askance on Ayn Rand as a little too leftist-Nannystatist for their liking who will never be satisfied, but the best is the enemy of the good enough, and we have the good enough right now - including the promise of a number of small players in our new Senate who, if they can be bargained with at not too great a price, will make our Labor and Greens parties utterly irrelevant for at least the next six years.
