Corruption within the Georgia Bar association
— Purple Avenger

The usual whiff of corruption associated with legal matters erupts into the straight up stench of judge buying and influence peddling.

Judge Bensonetta Lane received the Jack P. Turner Award from the family law division of the state Bar over Memorial Day weekend in Destin, FL. According to the Bar's website, the award recognizes those who made outstanding contributions and achievements in the area of family law in Georgia.

When CBS Atlanta News investigative reporter Jeff Chirico asked Kelly Miles, chairwoman of the family law division, to explain why Lane was selected to receive the honor, she said it was "confidential."...

... investigation found Lane failed to disclose that John Mayoue, an attorney who represented singer Usher Raymond [Purp: yea, that Usher] in a custody dispute, hosted a fundraiser for Lane that raked in 83 percent of all contributions in a key reporting period before the 2008 election. Lane shocked many by giving Usher custody of his two sons even though he travels a majority of the time...

... Bar's family law division selected Lane to receive the award. Court records revealed seven of those members had or currently have cases before Lane. Ten of the members practice in Atlanta, which means it's likely they will appear in Lane's courtroom in the future...

Corrupt judges you rent by the hour.
Honest judges stay bought.

16 another idiot alert, this from abcnews.go.com:

As downpours and tornadoes hit the country, actor and conservation activist Robert Redford had weather on his mind and urged President Obama to follow suit.

In a collaborative campaign with the Natural Resources Defense Council, Redford challenged the president to strike at pollution and singled out coal-fired power plants as the root cause of the problem.

41 Having read the article--one reason why I think someone needs to be skittish about Georgia, and esp. Atlanta, is that it is probably gong to take another generation for corruption to work its way out of the minority side of the house. First coupe of generations in power are always a little shaky. This is not to say the crackers are pure--oh, heck no. It's just that you can do something about it without black (and soon to be Hispanic) pride getting wrapped up in it. Georgia is going to return to the Democratic column in the next twenty, and I don't think you will want to be around for the stupidity as that results. Esp. of having to praise folks like Lane smply because she is black. Besides, the traffic in Atlanta, I'm told, sucks.

There's a provision in the OCGA that prohibits you from being ticketed for speeding by local LE unless it's at least 10mph over, with the exceptions being residential, historic districts, school zones, high pedestrian areas, or if it's specifically stated "strictly enforced."  That's why everyone drives like they're in the Watermelon 500 on anything that isn't a surface street. God's Special Police (Georgia State Patrol), however, can ticket you anytime they please.

Unless they're Condo Commandos (with matching white belt and shoes): then they're in the left hand  lane  doing 45 on the interstate with  their left blinker on.

The other variation is   Floridus  Grandmaius  with the same   driving habits, but all you can see is a  clump  of blue hair and a set of       knuckles on the steering wheel. And welding goggles.

Everyone should be listening to Levin tonight.

He rightly pointed out that one of the biggest grievances against the British during Revolutionary times was the use of  writs of assistance - documents which served as a general search warrant, allowing customs officials to enter any ship or building that they suspected for any reason might hold smuggled goods.

Sound familiar?

193 Straightforward ethical rule which is easy to do.  Any lawyer who contributes to a judge cannot appear in front that judge, ever.

Are there any jurisdictions with this rule?  Not NY.

Oh, I understand it fully, from a couple of angles.  There's a large number of my family in Demopolis; also, I'm a Mississippi State alumnus, and though it doesn't get the play that AU/UA gets, it's just as bitter a rivalry between us and TSUN.

But there's always fair weather fans for any school.  Just seems to be an inordinate amount of them here.  Or at least, that's my perception.  Could also be the Aubie's just scraped their stickers off and the Tiders added more.  Either way, there are definitely more vehicles decked out in Crimson and fewer in Orange and Blue than two years ago around here.
