Cowards?
— Ace

Erick Erickson writes:

On Monday, two young men planted bombs in Boston and last night killed a policeman before one of them was, himself, killed. The other remains on the run.

Politicians have thrown around the word “cowards” to describe these guys.

Do they not know what the word means?

The basic definition is “a person who lacks the courage to do or endure dangerous or unpleasant things.”

Actually that may be the simplified definition, but the real definition -- the definition used throughout history -- isn't that.

The use of violent force has throughout history attracted a certain code for restraining its use. The code of chivalry, Bushido, the code of the US fighting forces... those who are trained to use violence professionally create a moral code which specifies its permissible use and forbids its impermissible uses.

It is this code that separates a soldier from a brigand, a knight from a knave.

"Cowardly" has been employed to describe all deviations from a martial code. The most obvious deviation -- the one Erick is thinking of -- is the departure from the code of courage, that a soldier should be willing to risk his life in honorable (permissible, sanctioned) combat and should not shy away from the hazards of combat.

But the in the long history of the term, it is also applied to many other departures from the code of the soldier -- such as the use of violence against the weak, defenseless, weaponless.

Murderous knights of the Middle Ages were not called "cowardly" because they were fearful of combat. Most often, they weren't more afraid of combat than any other knight.

They were called "cowardly" because they employed tactics contrary to the code of martial honor -- taking unfair advantage of an opponent (such as using a crossbow to kill an opponent in range, when that opponent invited an honorable hand-to-hand contest) or using the power of violence against non-combatants.

Many Wild West criminals weren't "cowardly" in the sense of shying from physical violence. They were instead called "cowardly" for shooting men in the back, raping women, killing old unarmed men.

They were cowardly not for fearing death -- most people who become murderers don't fear death all that much because they give little value to life, including their own.

They were cursed as cowards not from running away from a fair fight (though most cowards would do that, as they don't like fair fights; that's what makes them cowards) but for not adhering to the moral code of the Soldier, the moral code of the Strong, the moral code of the Brave, which limits the uses of violence to certain tactics and ends judged morally acceptable (and of course even morally laudatory).

That code, note, puts the Soldier's own life at risk. The soldier, by using violence in a highly regulated way and being careful to not attack non-combatants, actually puts his own life in greater danger than it would otherwise be. By restricting his own Rules of Engagement and choice of tactics and targets, he increases the likelihood he himself will be killed.

Delay equals death in battled, after all.

And that makes adhering to the code all the more laudatory -- not only is violence being held to certain purposes, but the soldier who adheres to such a code is increasing the chances of his own death in order to reduce the danger to non-soldiers.

Did these cowards seek a fair fight? Did they choose for their opponents other armed men? Did they adhere to the basic rules of combat -- such as announcing there will in fact be a combat at all?

Of course not.

A poisoner might take certain risks -- such as being arrested or even killed by police -- but no one calls the poisoner a brave man for having slipped a deadly dose into his wife's coffee. His use of violence is not only towards an impermissible end, but deployed via impermissible tactics.

I agree that words should have meanings. But we should also be mindful that words have long histories and long memories.

Hey! Lay off Erick! He's not trying to defend the terrorists. He just doesn't know what "cowardly" actually means, and how it's been used throughout history.

This is an etymological failing, not a moral one.

The Japanese Attack on Pearl Harbor was called "cowardly" not because the sailors and pilots of the Japanese fleet were afraid to fight, but because they violated the basic rule of combat (declaring a war before you begin it) in order to disadvantage their opponents and advantage themselves.

Honor has a cost. Honorable men pay that cost in their own blood.

Murderers are not willing to pay that cost. They are willing to kill but not willing to expose themselves to the full danger that honor sometimes requires. That's why there aren't many statues honoring murderers.

Although Robert Redford and other Hollywood types who hate the "extremism of the right wing" do make lots of sympathetic films about them.

22 in other really important news (yahoo):

" An eithe grade student from West Virginia has been arrested, suspended and faces charges for wearing an NRA T-shirt with the image of a firearm and the words "Protect Your Right" printed on it to school. "

(yeah, the article misspelled 'eighth')

the school policy:

"A student will not dress or groom in a manner that disrupts the educational process or is detrimental to the health, safety or welfare of others. A student will not dress in a manner that is distractive or indecent, to the extent that it interferes with the teaching and learning process, including wearing any apparel that displays or promotes any drug-, alcohol- or tobacco-related product that is prohibited in school buildings, on school grounds, in school-leased or owned vehicles, and at all school-affiliated functions."

(I guess you can't wear a t-shirt with a picture of Groucho Marx or George Burns. Che might be okay, though.)

23 I'm fucking sick of this shit, ever since 9/11 when we were all admonished that whatever else the assholes who flew the planes were, they weren't "cowards". Fuck that. It's insecure Leftist asshole bravado that understands bravery only in terms of cartoonish death-defiance that borders on psychopathy. Bravery isn't being a fucking nutjob who doesn't care about his own life or has himself convinced that something way better is going to happen when he blows himself up. Real bravery is doing something that you really don't want to do, but you put yourself forward as a potential sacrifice for the good of others.

This. ^^^

Doing what needs to be done, doing  the right thing because if you do not step up no one else will, doing it in spite of the danger and at great personal cost to yourself is courage.

Doing harm because of your hateful anger, doing it to deliberately harm the innocent, including the purposeful targeting of children, has no relation to the word "courage".  It has more to do with the word "evil".

88 Hey don't knock Erick too much -- he's not trying to defend the terrorists. He just doesn't know what "cowardly" actually means, and how it's been used throughout history. The Japanese Attack on Pearl Harbor was called "cowardly" not because the sailors and pilots of the Japanese fleet were afraid to fight, but because they violated the basic rule of combat (fair notice) in order to disadvantage their opponents and advantage themselves. Honor has a cost. Soldiers pay that cost in their own blood. Murderers are not willing to pay that cost. That's why there aren't many statues honoring murderers.

93 That code, note, puts the Soldier's own life at risk. The soldier, by using violence in a highly regulated way and being careful to not attack non-combatants, actually puts his own life in greater danger than it would otherwise be. By restricting his own Rules of Engagement and choice of tactics and targets, he increases the likelihood he himself will be killed.

A minor quibble: A drone pilot commits violence but does not put his own life at risk.  Nonetheless, his is a necessary and morally commendable function.  Likewise, one could argue that Paul Tibbetts really didn't put his life at risk.  There was very little anticipated resistance to his Hiroshima mission.  Therefore, neither act of really intense violence is one of courage, yet it is still a good thing.  It doesn't mean those involved aren't brave or strong, just that they didn't need to risk life and limb to commit violence.  But neither does it mean they were cowardly.  Ah, I think maybe that's your point.

Or am I overthinking this?

And re: 2nd bomber's future corpse, I wonder if it had the proper MA firearm identification card or license to carry.

And so, of course, we need further laws that would have prevented these heinous acts?

In fact, committing jihad and dying really is pure cowardice because it means that they were not willing to advance on their own merit into the afterlife.

Cowardly is NOT used in Warrior circles for those who deviate from the code... you can be Brave, but wrong...

We consider Suicide attacks as wrong... but you cannot question their commitment nor bravery when they do them... especialy if they are following their OWN Code.... you mention Bushido, which has a component of suicide within it... somthing NON Warriors from the West might consider cowardice...

I will also point out, that these guys had a running gun and bomb fight with the Police... instead of surrendering...

Right. During the Revolutionary war, the British saw the way the patriots fought, in the woods and eschewing traditional military formations, as cowardly. However, they were wrong; it was a change of tactics, not a change of honor. They were still on the front lines risking their lives, even if the visuals of that front line changed.

Islamic terrorism is cowardice for the exact reasons you specified; it attacks the innocents of society, the non-soldiers, those that society uses military to protect in times of conflict. It flies in the face of our Western ideas of true warfare. It is also why the groups in the Middle East or Africa that use children as warriors or shields are so despised; traditionally children are to be protected, not seen as weapons to be used and discarded as needed. Excellent post.

Posted by: LizLem at April 19, 2013 01:34 PM (8wqqE)

272 In WWI pilots started out with a great sense of honor.  I've read stories of men who stopped their dogfight once it became clear the other pilot had run out of ammunition.

Later, however, all that fell apart.  Men got jaded and they did everything they could to knock the other pilot out of the sky.  Some even carried lead bars to drop from above.  They even used pistols as backup when the main gun overheated or failed or ran out of ammunition.  Of course those came in handy too if they went down on the wrong side of no man's land.

277 One of the most difficult things I have read, is when in The Road Past Mandalay, John Masters, behind Jap lines in Burma, realizes that the Japs are closing in, and that his unit must move out or be slaughtered. They have wounded that can not be transported, but they know what will happen to them if the Japs get a hold of them. To stand and fight would be useless, and result in capture of everyone, and subsequent torture by the Japs.  He orders that all the wounded troops incapable of moving out be..., put to death. How does one judge that? War creates hellish situations. I'm not going to get self-righteous second guess him...

289 >>>AKA contriving a bullshit "angle" that generates site hits and radio callers. But I'm not cynical. Let me defend him on that, too: What anyone doing this sort of job must do is try to think of things that are clever, counter-intuitive, interesting, provocative, etc. Rush does that every day. So do I. For example, I knew mentioning "bullying" the other day would be provocative. I believed what I said. But I did know "This will inspire debate." And that was an attractive quality to it. As a... god am I a sort of host here? in a way... you do have to occasionally toss out interesting/clever/counter-intutiive/provocative ideas, if you're contributing anything at all to the debate. When you guys debate your own stuff, that's great, but I had nothing to do with that. My contribution only comes in when I propose something in a post and toss it out there. That's my only contribution. Now, look, when your main goal is Trying to Be Interesting (lesser goal: trying to be right), you're going to get things wrong sometimes. I do. So do you guys! I know what you mean about attention-seeking and "Trying to start an argument" but let's face it-- that's his job, that's my job. And it's your hobby !

371 Easier to just move it here. 468 This posted by Ed Driscoll at PJM. Police ‘making entry’ into house on 14 Hazel,” Michelle Malkin tweets. The New York Times now has an article on the (still ongoing) incident: Two young men, armed with guns and explosives in what appeared to be backpacks, engaged in a violent standoff with dozens of police on a street in Watertown, Mass., Thursday night, a resident said. Andrew Kitzenburg, 29, said he looked out of this third floor window to see two young men of slight build in jackets shooting at dozens of police officers from behind a black Mercedes SUV. The officers and the men were 70 yards apart, he said, and engaged in “constant gunfire.” A police SUV “drove towards the shooters,” he said, and was shot at until it was severely damaged. It rolled out of control, Mr. Kitzenberg said, and crashed into two cars in his driveway. The two shooters, he said, had a large and unwieldy bomb. “They lit it, still in the middle of the gunfire, and threw it. But it went 20 yards at most.” It exploded, he said, and one of the two men ran towards the gathered police officers. He was tackled, but it was not clear if he was shot, Mr. Kitzenberg said. The other, he said, got back into the SUV, turned it towards officers and “put the pedal to the metal.” The car “went right through the cops, broke right through and continued west.” The two men left “a few backpacks right by the car, and there is a bomb robot out there now.” Police had told residents to stay away from their windows, he said. The standoff came within hours of an incident at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in which a campus police officer was shot and killed. More as it comes in.

381 >>>But we excoriate the left When their defense is, "I phrased it inartfully.". Erickson gets a pass? Why? Well let's compare Maher v. Erickson, who both made the same point. Maher used the point to insist that WE'RE the real cowards and that America is awful. Erickson proposed it as an etymological quibble, arguing about the definition of "cowardly," and criticizing people for using the word inappropriately (even though I'm sure he'd agree the SPIRIT of that use, even if he found it incorrect, was appropriate -- that is to say, he didn't mind pounding on these guys, he just wanted to get the word right). Some errors are simply errors of knowledge or fact. We generally just correct each other in some cases. We don't make it a Big Deal. I'm fucking wrong all the time. You guys know that. We make a Big Deal when someone makes not just a surface error but makes that error in the midst of doing something else impermissible -- expressing hate, etc. While we castigated Maher for his "cowardly' error (and I think I may have written this post, somewhere, back then), what we were really attacking was his nasty egotistical Better Than You anti-Americanism, that cheap egotistical pleasure that comes from elevating oneself above one's fellows. I don't sense this with Erickson-- I think he's just saying "Words have meaning, let's get the words right." I certainly don't see vitriol and hate in his post. He's pointing out an error... erroneously, I think, but that's the extent of it.

Bravery has to do with 'IF' you will do the Act... not what the Act IS... IMO... We get fuzzy in our langauge... which then leads to poor results.... like we are NOT in a 'War on Terror'.... Terror is a Tactic.... we are in a War against Fundamental Islam.... and because we will never DESIGNATE who the actual enemy is???? We fight it with the wrong strategy IMO. Posted by: Romeo13 at April 19, 2013 05:45 PM (lZBBB) I don't think that is the same thing. War was different in WW2. We had no GPS guided bombs and collateral damage was considered part of the price you had to pay back then. And the citizens of those countries certainly knew they were at War and living where they lived put their lives at risk. And those pilots did put their lives at risk. As a matter of fact I believe that air crews in WW2 over Europe had the highest death rate of any of the Military including the infantry.

407 I always found it interesting that the prayer to the patron saint of soldiers, St, Michael the Archangel, is a specific request for protection from the wickedness and snares of the devil and the evil spirits who prowl about the world seeking the ruin of souls.  It's a recognition that those with lethal skills have a moral obligation to use those skills wisely.  This would include both the need to protect civilians and to avoid descending into mindless blood lust during the heat of battle.

This is  going to be replicated, mark my words.  By jihadi standards, this has been a smashing success.  When one considers the investment in money and manpower, compared to the outcome, it's a ridiculous win.

In this corner, you've got two perps with a willingness to kill and be killed, and a coupla thousand in prep cost.   And  in the other corner, you've got three dead at the blast site, hundreds injured, cops injured and murdered, and a nation transfixed.  And a major American city being ordered to "shelter in place", also known as 24 hour martial law in its application and appearance.  Seriously, shut down a city as big as Boston?  Does anyone have an idea of how much economic loss is being sustained in this area?  It has to be huge.  If any attack has the potential to be copied, this one will be.

421 Another partial exception were American revolutionaries who are not comparable to the Samurai approach to direct combat. Facing the British army under those rules of combat would have ended in disaster during part of the conflict. The European/British aristocrats sneered over such "cowardly tactics" employed by "colonial knaves". However, revolutionary soldiers modeled the heart of the code by fighting with courage against a powerful, well-equipped army and directing violence solely at soldiers. History does not reveal stories of them murdering or raping British wives and children. In fact, compared to the horrors of other revolutions , the American version is astonishing for the relatively peaceful post- success era. Isn't that result the truest indication of honor?

Erickson proposed it as an etymological quibble, arguing about the definition of "cowardly," and criticizing people for using the word inappropriately

451 I always found it interesting that the prayer to the patron saint of soldiers, St, Michael the Archangel, is a specific request for protection from the wickedness and snares of the devil and the evil spirits who prowl about the world seeking the ruin of souls. It's a recognition that those with lethal skills have a moral obligation to use those skills wisely.

454 Borat on the slab Save the picture. Burn it into your memory. We are about to enter 'Fahrenheit 451' territory where images and books are considered too inflammatory to allow the average prole like us to look at. Look carefully at the broken corpuscles on the face and shoulder where a 4,000 pound plus car was driven by one brother, over the other brothers face. Remember that lack of empathy when the Democrats accuse us of having no empathy. While they prosecute the person who took the picture and made it available for all to see. We are the lone voices, smack dab in the middle of a dystopian nightmare.

462 This is an interesting topic actually, in the academic sense. I'm not a witness of these two turds in particular, so won't go there, but I would have to disagree with the characterization that anybody engaging in terrorism is a coward. This gentleman's mindset of warfare is what cost the British the war, and in my opinion is what's costing us the war in Afghanistan now. We are losing in Afghanistan because we do not control the enemy's supply routes. We know where they are, and it's in mountainous terrain filled with quote-unquote "civilians," families. We sent men in to try and take the ground without mass casualties but failed, several times actually, fighting uphill even with superior numbers and weapons and training is a bitch. We could easily take these areas though, but it would mean doing things we aren't so far willing to do, dropping napalm, daily cutters, and wreaking complete havoc and killing every living creature in those mountains. But we aren't willing to do this. Bush wouldn't sign the orders, and neither will Obama, so it goes forever. We could end the war tomorrow with the Taliban completely destroyed and surrendered, but we don't have the stomach for it.

562 So, to be clear on Erickson's discussion of being able to call people cowards. Teddy Kennedy drove that girl into the water, ran off, hid out for 9 hours while the car slowly sank, and she suffered pain and terror for who knows how long before she finally drowned. Am I still allowed to call that dead, bloated, fat piece of dog crap a coward? Cause I don't want to be inaccurate in my insults. And, I dunno but, being so intent on saving your own worthless hide that you drive over your own brother's body strikes me as kinda cowardly.

575 "Womb jihad" is especially effective when the authorities ignore Muslim polygamy. Which they do, in Orlando. The UK gives bennies to second, third, and fourth wives. Not sure about a fifth. In Germany a huge majority of Muslim children say "government benefits recipient" when asked what they want to do for a living. There are many ways to destroy a nation. Muslims seem to use all of them, excluding a fight between professional armies. Too bad because that is all we are really geared for.

594 Well written post ace. Glad you mentioned Bushido. My instructor however always tried to teach me that if you knew someone was going to start a fight with you, throw the first punch. I can't be that way. Thankfully, in four instances it hasn't bitten me in the backside. And it's kept anyone from getting hurt. In his defense, he was looking after "one of his men." The same as I would if I had men under me in a war zone. Fair? Fair means all my guys come home alive. But when circumstances allow, the following has always meant a lot to me. A code if you will. Control, rather than hurt. Hurt, rather than injure. Injure, rather than maim. Maim, rather than kill.

Placing a bomb next to a child takes a special kind of hatred and callous disregard for human life, and it requires conviction; none of that requires bravery.

Having said that and having read Erickson's column, I got the impression that he was simply trying to say don't underestimate the conviction of this enemy, or his resolve to kill you and/or your loved ones in the manner most convenient and cost effective to him.

Posted by: CrotchetyOldJarhead at April 19, 2013 02:36 PM (9MF8B)

597 595 - I don't get this placed next to an 8 year old child stuff... as if it would be any better if he placed it when the child wasn't there and the kid was elsewhere in the blast radius or had walked into it after the perp left the scene or swapped out for the 19 year old. If you want these guys cowards do so, but don't say it's because of the 8 year old, that just doesn't make much sense.

Posted by: ThisBeingMilt at April 19, 2013 02:38 PM (7mQyC)

598 Post feels like a non-issue to me. There are different kinds of cowardice. There's physical cowardice, like Erick seems to be referencing and there's moral cowardice which covers different territory. Speaking for myself only, yeah I'm afraid of a fair fight. I might get hurt or killed in a fair fight. If I HAVE to fight, to save my own life or the life of a loved one, I'll make it as unfair as possible...on my side. But this really feels like a tempest in a teapot, fun to bullshit about but signifying little.

Tried to post this at RedState but can't login. No, jihadists don't even have physical courage:

To understand how thoroughly cowardly these boys are/were, you need to understand the Islamic doctrine that drives them. Islam is set up so that every Muslim, according to doctrine, will necessarily burn in Hell forever. No one can meet the standards. There is just one loophole. Those who die as "martyrs," "fighting in the way of Allah" (attacking infidels), are guaranteed the highest level of Islamic heaven, with the 72 virgins etcetera.

When a Muslim like the older brother becomes "very religious," that means that he takes the Muslim superstitions about burning in Hell forever very seriously, and it scares him shitless. He also gets drawn into jihad ideology and starts thinking a lot about killing and dying, so the consequences of dying become central to him. Where Hamlet is motivated just by his uncertainty about how a possible afterlife would judge suicide, the jihadist is much more powerfully driven by his certainty that dying not in the way of Allah would mean endless torture. That's why once they start down this road they become more and more determined to die committing murder. It is indeed cowardice, a physical cowardice, shaped by their superstitious fear of burning forever in the Islamic Hell.

To ignorant western observers jihad fighters can SEEM brave, but inside of tiny little brains and hearts they truly are the most cowardly pieces of $#!% on the planet, as anyone ought to know just from the fact that they set a bomb down next to an eight year old boy and a bunch of other innocent spectators. If I SLAPPED an eight year old boy Erickson would call me a coward, but he makes an exception for these guys because they want to die committing murder in the belief that it will allow them to avoid eternal hellfire? More like, in addition to being the worst cowards, Islamic jihadists are also the stupidest most gullible fraction of mankind, sucked into actually believing the stupidest most evil superstition ever concocted.

The definitions you want are:

Courage: Doing what is right despite your fear.

Cowardice: Doing what is wrong because it is easier.

Understood in that context we see that they are not strictly antonyms, even though they frequently appear to be such because of responses to the circumstances and stresses of combat.
And from there, everything written here about why those who follow the martial code are considered "courageous" while those who violate are considered "cowardly" follows naturally and logically.

I've been thinking about this overnight, and I can't keep silent. I'm no soldier -- failed medical exam. I'm a civilian. But I've seen and read and heard enough that I've as much right to weigh in as anyone else here.

Murdering marathon runners is a vile, despicable act.

But I don't appreciate it when some compare this act with soldiers and say that what soldiers or knights do is 'cowardly'. Don't judge these murderers like soldiers. They aren't in the same moral universe.

Judge them as men, boys, at peace. People who are supposed to have a sense of fair play and justice and compassion for their neighbors. People who are supposed to 'pick on someone their own side' and protect the weak and helpless , not kill them.

Don't judge them as soldiers.

A soldier at is a man (or woman, these days), who has raised his hand and sworn an oath, then sent out to kill or be killed in some hellhole.

A soldier isn't supposed to be a hero. A soldier, and a policeman, has an obligation to accomplish the mission and come back home with as many friends ALIVE as possible. That means NEVER, EVER FIGHTING FAIR. That means no heroics if at all possible. Heroics by enlisted are a sign of poor planning and failure by officers. That means stacking the deck as far as possible and not giving the enemy a ghost of an even break.

In short, that means being a 'coward'.

Look at some of the things WE did during world war 2. Google 'battle of the bismarck sea'. We massacred a Japanese troop convoy and we killed as many of the soldiers in the water after their ships were sunk as we could. Because every soldier who made it to shore would take a great deal of killing, and take American lives with him.

Or consider the firebombing of Tokyo, the mass incendiary drop of all Japanese cities and the final atom bombing of Japan. All to avoid a ground assault with millions of people.

'Cowardly'? It's easy to say fifty years later in air-conditioned rooms. When words like Guadalcanal, Tarawa, New Guinea, Saipan, Iwo Jima, Okinawa are barely words in history books. When Banzai charges and enemies who would NOT surrender but had to either be killed or commit suicide. Easy to say, and utterly wrong-headed.

I have no use for a soldier , or an officer, who would sacrifice even one more life, or fail his mission , to avoid the adjective 'cowardly'. I have no use for a soldier who would eschew a chance to kill his enemy safely in order to fight him 'fairly'. Just being in some hole like Afghanistan and outside the wire is bravery enough for any man. And if any man feels differently, I challenge them to do it!

The ethics of war are not the ethics of peace. So I will not insult soldiers by comparing what they do to stay alive with murdering unarmed civilians in a marathon. By young men who can't think of any better way to make a mark on the world than killing people who have done them no harm. The actions of these terrorist deserve nothing but contempt.     To do so is to elevate the terrorists beyond their deserts, and it does an injustice to the men who are even now having to go in harm's way to fight them.
