— Ace Big for CPAC, and also a great big announcement that Carson's interest in the presidency is more than strictly hypothetical.

Not even close. Grbac actually attempted to compete at Joe Montana's level.

Really, I'm sure the guy is awesome, but one speech does not an outstanding political leader make. For all I picked fun at tsrblke, I'll say I largely agree with him: wouldn't it be better for him to become a Senator, Representative, or Governor before looking at the Presidency? I'd kind of like a political history to be able to evaluate.

I think we determined that Obama is all about illusions and appearences.
A few years as a State Senator and a 2 years as a regular senator gave the appearance and illusion of previous experience.

He alread threw down the gauntlet against the MFM. Someone asked him about them digging up dirt on him, he responded, essentially, "Bring it on."

The problem for them is the number of tribes. They've figured out who they need to placate (gays) and who they can ignore (blacks) and who they can pander to with empty gestures (hispanics) and who they must pay off (unions).
They fall apart when each part of the coalition wants their fair share.
But Obama's a good demagogue. He keeps their hate focused.

The man is brilliant and has given many, many speeches They just haven't been televised for the public. I think he's something of a motivational speaker, too. He recalls his background and how he climbed to a position of great status and expertise against the odds to inspire the less privileged.
The man is very impressive. I don't believe him to be naive about politics, either. He's pretty un-PC which is worth zillions in conservative-cred points.

Honestly, I don't think it matters. I seriously do not believe that the voting public cares about qualifications anymore. Certainly not if the person running is a Democrat, and apparently not if the candidate is a Republican (Or Romney would have cleaned the floor with Obama this time around).
Qualifications seem not to enter into it. Now it's all star power and celebrity. I'm pretty certain Will Smith or Ben Afleck (sp?) or MATT! DAMON! (played by Brian Dennehy) could win election over any Republican we put up.
And now I need to go find a bottle of strychnine.

Benjamin Carson is dangerous because he CONTRADICTS EVERY FUCKING NARRATIVE OF THE LEFT.
He is their kryptonite. No welfare, no dependency on the state. Self reliance and hard work.
THIS. ELEVENTY!!!!!!!!!!!!! AND UNITE!!!
Everyone asks like Reagan just arrived on the fucking scene. he fought the establishment terribly for decades, BUT HE NEVER SPOKE ILL OF THEM.
do you get the fucking picture. Be civil amongst friends. Be direct and clear to the point against enemies. Use mockery on ideas not people.
THIS IS HOW WE WIN..... You think 2012 was bad, imagine being Reagan and getting the fucking ass pounding that was the goldwater election.
Did he give up? Did he say LIB??? FUCK NO. He won, and he won big time. Demographics won't prevent us from winning. Only we will. Anyone else that says anything different is a liar.
Dr. Benjamin Carson is our fucking demographic. Now are we going to STAND AND FIGHT, or lie down like little pussies.

I don't really agree with that in this context. We are talking about a job that must be filled with a man (or a woman, or, who am I kidding, a man) and not an idea.
In the philosophical context, we are devoted to ideas not men, but when it comes to elections, Ideas are not running for Senate.
I'd like to see a man in the Office who embodies the ideas of (in no certain order), the Constitution should be adhered to at all times (which means a smaller, less intrusive and less expensive government), capitalism is good, we should be free of meddling busybodied bureaucrats, we are individuals with our own dreams and ambitions united by Americanism and all the good things that involves.
I don't hear anyone on our side saying anything close to that, which is why we're losing IMHO.

Yeah -- I agree with Allen G. I am not sure one speech means we should plan what to wear to the coronation.
Also, to be blunt, the way the GOP seems to slobber over the next Great Black Hope (Cain, Carson) if anything highlights the lack of African American presence in the party. Carson is saying some great things -- and I think his experience makes him uniquely qualified to understand the issues associated with ObamaCare. But how about we consider him first for something like Secretary of HHS or Surgeon General, before we having him running for President.
Posted by: nc at February 27, 2013 10:21 AM (fkBVg)
They disagree with one part of the conservative canon. I disagree with GOProud on that point, but I don't think anyone is shoving them down our throat if we don't swing that way. Points of contention naturally get discussed more often than points of agreement. No one in conservative forums has maintained that I am a bigot for not supporting gay marriage. Except for maybe some Ronulan Trolls. But they think all sorts of strange things.

I have to disagree, Ace.
The Tea Parties, as I see them, are not rejecting that a person who is 100% right on ideology may be unelectable, they are rejecting the idea that it's worth winning the election if the person is only 50% right on ideology, or even 80% if that 20% he's missing is in sufficiently important areas.
In those cases, they'll put up the 100% guy and hope, rather than 50% guy who will only manage the decline anyway, and who may still lose.

The problem with GOProud isn't ideological, it's personal. Like I said above, they use "outing" as a weapon and generally do this -- should I say it? -- drama queen routine every year.
Frankly, the first time they wanted into CPAC, I thought "great, they aren't those log cabin douches who can't even muster fiscal conservatism" but the CPACers may have had the measure of Chris Barron more than I did.

Sorry to be the cynical guy in the room, but would we be promoting Carson like this if he was white? I doubt it.
Now, that is not a knock on Carson -- he appears to be a highly accomplished surgeon and has thought deeply about medical care and medical insurance issues. But just because he is an expert in those areas, does not make him the next POTUS.
I also agree that is perfectly fine to take into account racial/geographic/gender identity of a potential candidate -- if that fact can help bring in some votes. But it should not be the overriding consideration.
I definitely want to hear more from Carson. And, I like what I have heard so far, but lets see how he does.

Guys,
We have to do our own internals here. I love Sarah Palin and think she's fantastic. With that out of the way, can we turn to fucking reality here.
The media are nothing but jackals that will go after any candidate any way they can.
We need WALKING DEAD candidates. What I mean by that, is that by their very existence they DESTROY the same stupid fucking narrative that the media has put in Americans' minds about the GOP.
So how does that apply to Palin. Are you fucking kidding me, a semi-hot, Fargo accented chick who does somehow tend to produce crazed-looking stills. ARE YOU GUYS ALL FROM THE NORTH WOODS OR CAN YOU HEAR THAT FUCKING ACCENT.
Just like a crazy northerner accent, a crazy southern accent won't work as well. Sorry Haley Barbour, your chances are doomed.
Politics is so much about optics these days. WE HAVE TO ADAPT AND COUNTER rather than getting assfucked all the time. Jesus, I like Palin and I already knew it was a joke when I heard her speak at the VP debate.
Polished minorities and middle class whites, that carry our message well, is who we need to be the face of the GOP. THAT WILL BE THE ONLY WAY THE MESSAGE GETS THROUGH.
Boehner is ok, but look at fucking Eric Cantor. The guy looks like a fucking pretentious retard, AND I SUPPORT HIM.
If we can't be honest about optics then we will lose for the forseeable future on the national stage. It's really that simple.

Reality is not everything the Tea Party wants, but neither is it what Rove et al will settle for to get an (R). Both lead to DOOM in the long run. The tea party pressure on the GOP is needed, even if the tea party is often unwise with the candidates.

To 1 and 2, don't know.
To 3, he's Seventh-Day Adventist Christian, so very limited-abortion.
To 4, he bashed Federal spending, Obamacare, our educational system; he promoted "flat-tax" and likened it to a limited "tithe". It would be easy to infer a limited role of government.

Because being "Pragmatic" for the last 60 years has worked so well. We had a decent run with Reagan (and, I'll point out, most Tea Partiers would take Reagan in a heart-beat- even knowing that he had approved Amnesty and ended up raising tax rates). Every other Republican President in the last 60 years has either merely managed the decline or actively made things worse.
So, yes, the Tea Parties would like to stop doing the same thing over and over while expecting different results. What we'd really like are likeable, non-wonkish people who would stand up for the principles we hold dear. Until that happens, we'll keep putting up people who at least do stand up for the principles we hold dear.

I think this is why the Tea Party and Rove are fighting. The Tea Party just won't accept the idea that a candidate may be completely right on ideology and yet unelectable due to biography/personal appeal considerations.
----
Ok. But, I'd argue two-way street. The Rovians don't seem to be able to accept that a candiate who does have an ideology that appeals to the TPers could possibly be electable. Chicken and egg, which is what is so exasperating about the whole thing.

That said, I would not advocate for him to be President as my first choice only because in spite of his brilliance it seems he has trouble balancing a check book and handling his own money. At least according to his biography.
Ideology has to be backed up with the ability to discern cause and effect, grasp of economics and leadership and management skills.

Every organization has their nuts. The Tea Party is no exception. But as a whole, I've found them very evenly keeled as to what needs to be done to restore this country.

And by WALKING DEAD political candidates, what I mean is when on the TV show they smeared themselves in zombie blood and used castrated zombies in chains to make it past all the other zombies.
We need to bathe in the blood of the left's/media's obvious attacks. Which are: GOP is out of touch, old, racist, homphobic white dudes that never fought in a war and who were born with a silver spoon in their mouth and are really fucking rich.
That's what the left has, in a sentence. We need to slaughter these arguments with the faces of our candidates and get back to the message...

Carson, a prominent neurosurgeon at Johns Hopkins University, declined to do so, noting that he doesnÂ’t put his speeches down on paper beforehand.
“I told them that I don’t have an advance copy because I don’t write out my speeches and I don’t use teleprompters …they asked more than once ... I gave them the [Biblical] texts around which the remarks would be framed ... I said read those texts, the remarks will be framed around those ... that should have told them something,” Carson said in an interview with The Hill this week.

I am all for Carson speaking a CPAC. I also thought his speech was great -- regardless of the color of his skin. My only point is that there would be no presidential talk being swung around if a white surgeon gave that speech.
Lets be fair to Carson -- he is getting ready to get dunked into partisan politics. Lets see if he sinks or swims. If he swims -- then I am all for taking a closer look at him. But he just put his toe in the water. Let not set up our own affirmative action program for AA Republicans and promote people who have not proven themselves in the political arena. If he thrives in the political enviroment, then I could care less about the color of his skin.

Here's the question, Ace. Did the Tea Party support Scott Brown? Did they support Chris Christie (we knew he was a gun-grabber from the beginning)?
Yes. Of course we know that the outcome of elections matter. And of course we know that getting someone who agrees with us 10% is better than someone who agrees 0% when those are the only two option.
What we reject is that (in most cases) those are the only two options. Sharon Angle looked like she was going to win up to the day before election day. The Tea Parties also supported Marco Rubio and Ted Cruz.
How many "establishment" or "pragmatic" candidates have lost in the last 5 years, ace? You have a definite selection bias here- you choose to remember the losers as "Tea Party Candidates" and either don't label the Tea Party candidates who won as such, or pretend "Well, everyone supported them," when that is not the case.
If the Tea Parties are responsible for Sharon Angle and Christine O'Donnell, why don't the "pragmatists" have to be responsible for John McCain and Mitt Romney?

Obviously, part of Carson's appeal is he seems to stand up to Obama, which he did in his own personal way, right in front of him. We conservatives are a little dejected because we don't see a lot of that right now.
But Carson clearly has much more to offer than simply that.

The Republican party made it its business to ignore the base when it came to candidate selection. They also made it clear that until it cost them elections they would continue to ignore the base. So the base made it cost elections.
The price wasn't set by the tea party, it was set by the GOP. The tea party has made mistakes. But so has the GOP.

History tells me that sometimes countries don't always do what we perceive to be in their best economic interest. If you are in power and your economy starts to flunder (as China's may), you look for other ways to consolidate your power. War is very good for that.

Electability matters, so does ideology. 100% on one hand, but 0% on the other (no matter which is 100% and which is 0%) won't cut it. All the tea party seems to be doing to me is trying to swing the pendulum closer to the ideology side. Now with COD, arguably the tea party went too far. But a message did need to be sent - THEN. 408 "I just want one COD supporter to admit that she was our side's Alvin Greene without adding "but..." and then negating the admission with more justification.
Maybe that will help some of us let go of that clusterf*ck"
There are those who believe that having Mike Castle with an (R) after his name was worth it just so he would have been one more vote for a republican senate leader. That's a valid argument and it would have been a help as long as Castle continued to caucus with the republicans.
However, on the other side are those who believe that damage one extremely liberal senator would have done by providing "bipartisan" cover to incredibly stupid fucking bills or by becoming the "go-to" senator for MSNBC when a conservative idea needed badmouthing would negate any advantage.
I don't think the people who opposed COD on a strategic level during the primaries were wrong or not conservative. It was after she won the primary when the detractors turned into total assholes by badmouthing her.

Ok... what history? Especially recently, considering the rise of globalization?China is all about GDP. The only reason I could see war is if their GDP crashes *on their own*. Which isn't impossible I suppose, but otherwise war is extremely unlikely.
----
All history. War may be unlikely, but they can start pretty fast often over minor things. Just because we are in the modern era doesn't mean that wars will end. WW1 was to be the war that ends all wars. I think war with China is pretty unlikely, but if it happens (either with us or between them and someone else), our children or grandchildren will be learning that the warning signs were easy to see.

Losing with moderates hurts us.
If I'm going to lose I'd much rather do it with someone close to a true believer so the next time I put a moderate out there it looks centrist by comparison. e.g. moving the Overton Window to the right. Rove has given us two losers in a row, and likes Jeb for next time. Jeb is a loser. If that's his answer I would rather run crazy conservative.

Mikey Castle managed to fuck up a primary in a state he ran for eight Goddamm years. Not only wasn't he very conservative, but he also wasn't very electable. And Delaware had one of the last primaries. And the polling indicated that he would trounce the Democrat. Then he completely pussed out, gave tacit support to the Democrat and took a $ million warchest home.
Fun fact: Both the Tea Party AND the oh so smart establishment republicans put up shitty candidates and they battled for the basement.
FTR: I voted against her in the primaries (I did what uncle Karl commanded) and for her in the general.

Even when I was 30 points down in the polls he wrote me a check, he told people he was supporting me, he helped me in my race and I was thirty or forty points down. ThatÂ’s important for fairness to say that.
Ultimately, when I was the nominee American Crossroads came in to Florida and spent a lot of money on my candidacy and weÂ’re grateful for that. But by the same token, I would not have been elected without Tea Party support. I would not have had a chance to even win the primary without all these folks out there who rallied to the cause of defending our Constitution, limiting government and supporting our traditional values and IÂ’m forever grateful for that as well. They both have a place in American politics

Did you just not read the rest of the comment, ace?
Option 1: We win with a True Believer- that's a definite win.
Option 2: We win with a Moderate- well, that's probably a win, most of the time.
Option 3: We lose with a True Believer- that's not good, but a) the ideology itself is not harmed and b) when we run someone more moderate (though still closer to a True Believer) they look much more 'centrist.'
Option 4: We lose with a Moderate- that's definitely bad.
So the good that comes from a True Believer winning is better than when a Moderate wins, and the bad when a True Believer loses is actually less bad than when a Moderate loses.
Now, again, no one is disputing that we need to pick electable candidates. Case in point- a guy ran against Joe Barton here in my congressional district last cycle. I can't even remember his name. He was the "tea party" candidate (though I don't think he had a ton of support there) and was running at Joe Barton from the right (not a lot of room there, but some).
Problem? Guy had 0 charisma. So he got very few votes. The Tea Parties in the area had decided they could live with Joe Barton, even if he's not quite as conservative as many (most?) of his constituents (at least those who voted R in the general).
Again, you're taking the losses the Tea Parties had and putting them up as thought that's all the Tea Parties have done. And then you're ignoring the losses of the Rove wing.
But if David Dewhurst runs for Lt. Gov again, and someone challenges him from the right (assuming they're not a complete loon) most of the Tea Parties in Texas will support the challenger. David Dewhurst is not as Conservative as we can reasonably get in Texas.

What are we trying to advance here? The GOP or conservatism? While the two overlap, they aren't mutual? Would both be better off if Castle were in the Senate? I supppose, though no way to really know. If Castle had defeated COD, would we have Cruz? I suppose, though no way to really know. Does the majority of the tea party place ideology above and beyond everything else? I don't think so, though they may place it higher in the pecking order now than in years past.
There are just too many unknowns and too many variables. Winning elections matter, we all know that. But to think that is all that matters is a mistake. The Whig party got dusted in 1856 and collapsed, but a stronger party emerged from that.
Let's all agree that both electability and ideology matter. But it seems like some of us are going to lean more to ideology at this time, because the electability route didn't seem to make much of a difference during the 2000's and it hasn't worked in the past 2 presidential elections.

Don't be too hard on Ace, he'll wake up eventually. Right now, he's stuck in this loop that's created by the MSM and the polling they do with the questions they word.
If you give me near total control of the media and how polls are constructed, democrats would never win another election - ever. It's a credit to the strength of our ideals and positions that we can win as much as we do without the media and polls.
But back to Ace, he believes in that elusive informed moderate who is pissed off that we tolerate religious people and some of their views. He's not totally wrong. There is a small group of politically aware people out there who think the GOP is too extreme, but they are a tiny percentage.
The real prize is the totally unaware idiots who go strictly on perception. We could win them with the right campaign, but because we're stuck with asshole counsultants from years past, it hasn't happened. The 2010 midterms were a good indication of what can happen when you leave the assholes behind and just run on your ideas.
Ace will figure it out eventually.

The GOP should run on the following: guns, voter id, low taxes.

I disagree. We've already got all the people who care about guns, voter id and low taxes.
We need to run on education, racism and immigration.
With the right campaign, which the MSM would scream from the rooftops is totally racist, we could win the black and hispanic vote while sticking to conservative principles. It would need to center around how blacks are being fucked by the democrats, how their kids are illiterate and headed for jail or death because of democrats. Show them how democrats stay in power by fucking blacks and hispanics.

You'd be surprised at how many people would vote against the Dems if they thuoght they wanted to take away your guns. Manchin is pro-gun you know. The trick is getting those people to know that all dems want to take away your guns. The way to do it is to repeat that phrase over and over.

Compare and Contrast:
According to the Wikipedia bio Carson's genius in neurosurgery is the combination of his fine motor skills and ability to conceptualize neural networks opaquely in three dimensions. Anyone who gets into this line of work has to be very bright, very confident, and have brass balls. And I'm sure he's had his share of heartbreaking situations where he did not save a child. Which means he understands the human condition at a gut level.
Barry can't walk through a iron gate with an umbrella, and when he hears that people who work for him are threatened by psychotic mobs, he shrugs and goes to bed.

I would welcome anything that brings back the concept of citizen-elected official. An entrenched political class is bad for our country. Any way to break this idea is great to me (see Ron Johnson). SH, " You'd be surprised at how many people would vote against the Dems if they thuoght they wanted to take away your guns"
As incredibly stupid as the voting public is, I doubt that any of them don't know which party is pro-gun.
Give me the keys to this puppy and I'll create commercials that show black teenagers struggling to read a Dick and Jane book. I'll show the cluelessness and shame on the faces of inner-city utes when they can't make change for a dollar.
Then, when I've got everyone's jaw-dropping attention, I'll explain how the democrats made a deal with the teacher's union to trade black kid's education for votes.
By the time I'm done, I'll have guilty white liberals from Vermont going person to person in Detroit apologizing for voting democrat all these years.
When my commercials stop running, it will be difficult for democrat officials to cross the street without hundreds of women, tears flowing from their eyes, trying to beat them for their evil ways.

Carson's been speaking to those groups for years. His speech hasn't changed, only the venue. He has been doing a subset of what you suggest already. The Prayer Breakfast was only the most recent with wide exposure because he said it pretty much straight to Obama's face. The speech didn't matter so much. The target did... and that's why it made news.
Posted by: AnonymousDrivel at February 27, 2013 12:15 PM (eHIJJ)
Jwest - just because we are kown as the party, that doesn't mean the Dems are known as the party that will take away your guns. Instead they are known as the party that simply want to do reasonable background checks, reasonable registration.
We need to make them the party that will take away your guns. No more nuance. When they say otherwise, just repeat that they want to take away your guns.
We are also the party known for low taxes, yet in 2008, we let Obama claim to be a tax cutter for 98% of the country.
See the difference, the Dems aren't known as anti-gun, pro-taxes. They are known as pro-sensible gun regulations, pro-taxes for the rich. Whereas they paint the GOP as anti-women. We get into nuance, we should be into more black and white.
Posted by: SH at February 27, 2013 12:16 PM (gmeXX)
Lots of promise in education obviously. However the other two have problems.
1. Racism
No party or candidate can beat the Dems in identity politics. Not for the reflexive Dem response but because dividing the public in the ethnic/racial categories only gives rise a divisive and lesser America.
A candidate that uses identity politics isn't fulfilling the promise of a free and dynamic country. They are engaging permanent discord, and a government that is empowered to play racial referee, forever punishing the out-group and rewarding the in-group, is tempting fate and civil wars (plural.)
2. Immigration
A lot of what passes for debate on immigration sucks.
The Dems won't admit that they want open borders. They have to claim otherwise but their policies do not revolve around a theoretical limit or metering for immigration. Their policies revolve around ever-increasing levels of immigration.
We haven't really addressed the central issue; is unmitigated immigration a good thing for the republic? Yes, that phrasing is necessarily loaded and it is where the issue breaks in half ultimately.
Suppose we just throw up our hands and say, "Andele, ariba, ariba! Come one, come all." What is the result? Is our Republic the same there after?
Or is there a cost to such a policy? We need to be honest here and not frame this debate as one in which being against open borders is merely the uncool position. Is there a real and quantifiable outcome of a quick and sudden change in the social makeup of a country? Does culture matter at all?
If there would be a huge push for a complete Socialist-Corporatist government, why should we happily help the Dem's achieve this?
If there isn't such a cost, are their examples of other countries undergoing such a change that are evidence of this?
