Cyprus Border Guards Seizing Money From Suitcases
— Ace

via @lachlan, the shape of things to come to America, and soon.

Customs officials said border guards at the counrtry’s air and sea ports have been instructed to check baggage and monitor whether travelers are taking more than €10,000 (about $13,000) out of the country. Any amount above that €10,000 threshold can be confiscated.

And it is coming to America. Have no doubt.

What I find most interesting about this story are the repeated assurances - often delivered with a sneer at doomsday prepper hysteria - that nothing of the sort could ever happen in the United States. But every article pooh-poohing the "hysterics" mentions something our government is doing, or has done, that echoes the crisis in Cyprus. They talked about raiding pension funds and stuffing them with government I.O.U.s; American liberals are salivating at the thought of doing the same to our 401k accounts....

It all boils down to governments making promises they can't keep... and insisting those promises are still valid, long past the point of no return, unto the point of systemic collapse.

At some point debts must be paid, and ugly debts results in ugly solutions. No one, I don't think, really imagined France would simply seize all of the property owned by the Catholic church to pay its debts in 1792... until they did.

59 What you are witnessing in Cyprus is the beginning of the 'Crunch'. Those morons who are prepared then you will know what I mean. Those not......well good luck. Once central banks and government can steal YOUR money in broad daylight and issue capital controls on the economy then trusts erodes and there is not an end until we hit the bottom. How is a business supposed to function when there are limits on what they can withdraw, limits on what individuals can withdraw for purchases, etc. It begins slowly like Cyprus and then spreads to the PIGS and the then rest ofthe EU and then it hops the pond. We are all so interconnected that the whole thing won't take long to freeze up. And then it's back to the 18th century for a good long time.

Obama is running up the debt/deficit so's that we'll have no choice but to raise taxes (but only on the rich). And when that fails, the only other option is to seize private property (but only belonging to people who already have more than what they need). It's the same ploy as Obamacare. Destroy the private health care sector to a point when the only option we have is full govt health care.

Posted by: S and M at March 25, 2013 02:53 PM (IY7Ir) I always thought it was ironic that the left, people who primarily want to take and control other people's stuff, like to point and shout "greed" so much. They're the greediest people in history, and they pretty much only use the word to describe resistance to their theft. When we say "greed" we mean "extreme or unethical desire to acquire more property, money, etc." They appear to mean "preventing us from taking more of your stuff." Then again, this seems to be true of a lot of words. Same words, different language.

228 Mark this one down for future reference ...

As we reported earlier this morning, a new profile of MSNBC chief Phil Griffin in The New Republic reveals plenty of fascinating details from inside the network, namely some information on the internal Keith Olbermann feud, and the origins of Rachel Maddow.

But from a media business perspective, one particularly interesting detail of the piece is when author Rebecca Dana reveals that Griffin “optimistically” expects to beat first-place rival Fox News within the next year.

“MSNBC is more successful now than it has ever been,” Dana wrote. “At the end of this presidential election, it drew an average of 1.5 million viewers to its weekday prime time lineup. (The numbers have fallen since.) Fox still gets more than two million a night, but Griffin, optimistically, believes he can beat Fox by 2014.”

“It’s a cockiness that has funneled down,” she added. “In a recent staff meeting, one of Griffin’s producers coined a new term for Fox News: ‘Loserville.’”

... 20 months to find out who is the real ‘Loserville.’

229 Isn't it interesting how all of these things are connected?

Syria, Russia, Cyprus:  If the Russians lose their port in Syria then they would look to Cyprus.  Merkel takes Cyprus money,  pissing off Russians, who have a lot of money therre. (And it is not all mob,  since Russian businesses use deposits in Cyprus to pay for goods from Europe, since Russia isn't on the Euro).

Gay marriage, confiscation of money: If gay marriage is passed,  it is only a matter of tie until the Catholic Church is forced to either perform gay marriages (not gonna happen) or have their property confiscated.  I thought it odd that Joe Biden was at Palm Sunday mass at St. Patrick's in New York, instead of DC or his home parish in Delaware. Maybe he was doing a preliminary assessment of value.

You know what I think we are looking at?  War.   War in Europe and the Middle East.

In Britain after WWII, the rule was that you couldn't take 5 pounds in notes    out of the country if you were going abroad.  You could take traveller's cheques, but    the actual pound sterling currency was required to remain IN the country.   That was to help keep the money in the country    during the rebuilding process after the war.

http://archive.org/details/a_warning_to_travellers_TNA

Multiply that times a shit-ton of stupid    fiscal policies    and you've got modern day confiscatory    Cyprus.     Instead of      rebuilding after a devastating war, they're trying to stay afloat after decades of bone stupid fiscal policy.    And instead of     allowing individuals to keep their money    while     requiring them to     spend     it in the country   (whatever your views on that may be),      they're TAKING    the money outright.

That can't possibly go wrong.

at the top = people who have already managed to find a flaw in the system.

I am sure there are a few.  There is a George Soros of Bitcoin, we just don't know who he is yet.  All systems have flaws that can be exploited.

Ultimately any failure of a fiat system is sociological.  Economics is nothing more than the psychology of money.  We all agree on the general rules, but when we think someone is getting an unfair advantage, the system becomes unstable.  All human systems work this way.

257 Bitcoin advocates like to think that they're more virtuous because of their closed society. But humans are generally rational maximizers, and the minute the folks at the top of the Bitcoin pile think there is an advantage to be gained, that's when everything goes to shit.

I don't think you really understand how it works. There are no folks at the top of the Bitcoin pile. It's not based on trust. It's based on cryptography and math. It's self regulated by hundreds of thousands of computers distributed across the globe.

258 The dissolution of the monasteries was closer in time to the Fonding than George Washington's birthday was to ours. I therefore submit that "no property shall be taken without just compensation" meant exactly that, and that the colonists would have had many examples from Englland to pull from as what they didn't want to happen. To me, if a tax cannot be repeated annually without resulting in a substantial diminution of one's original assets--in other words, not only can one not, by any means of good husbandry, expand the original property, but one sees it shrink to meet government requisitions, then it is a taking, not a tax.

In assessing this situation with the Russians the writer pointed out that while we see Merkel as sort of a dumpy housewife,  the Russians see her as a Panzer commander.  They have not forgotten,  you know.

Also,  the writer said that Putin has reinstituted the alliance between the Russian government and the orthodox church, by passing some socially conservative laws (not gay marriage,  by the way) and is ruling more like the czars.  He's a Russian nationalist (which seems obvious to me but apparently Hillary and Obama didn't get that).

The church in Cyprus is Orthodox,  and there are many Russians living there.

This is going to be a giant and dangerous mess.

Ultimately any failure of a fiat system is sociological. Economics is nothing more than the psychology of money. We all agree on the general rules, but when we think someone is getting an unfair advantage, the system becomes unstable. All human systems work this way.

Not to disagree with your premise, but there's another way to sabotage any financial system. We've been seeing it for years.

Governmental Regulation.  What  kind  of regulation   doesn't really matter, it could be under the guise of environmentalism as implemented through a too-powerful EPA.  The economy is restricted just the same.

And those who are  most   responsible for the government meddling in the private  market are typically the first to   state (falsely) that "capitalism doesn't work."

If you're talking about money in tax-deferred retirement accounts, then one good reason is because it gets taxed as income plus a 10% penalty. #313: Already been proposed: a 10% tax on all house sales in CA not matched by a corresponding house purchase - in effect, an exit tax, or as some might say, a ransom.

Hmm, I see a business opportunity. In some small Eastern Califiornia town, I'll build a few cardboard box houses and sell them for $10k apiece to homeowners looking to flee the state. Therefore, a corresponding house purchase and tax-free sale. Then, after whatever necessary time period elapses, I'll manage the sale of the $10k box to another fleeing homeowner. The homeowner only loses $1,000 plus commission to CA's tax.

387 LOL! Well I guess that little business venture of hers didn't pay off at all!

Let me tell you the sheer stupidity of this girl:

1.  Instead of doing work, she was constantly on the phone and internet, trading them.

2.  She would drive to a McDonald's at least an hour away in Bumfucksville where no one really would get them through the Happy Meals.

3.  She bought 30 Happy Meals at a time to gather as many Beanies as she could, and would throw away the other 28, 29 that she didn't eat.

4.  She placed a classified ad to trade them in a newspaper.  In New York.

5.  The number she placed in her ad, was the company's 800 number.  When prospective customers would call, they would get our switchboard before they asked to be connected to her extension.  When they called, they would ask, "Is this the Beanie Baby trader?"

6.  Company starts an internal security investigation.

7.  Investigation is over within minutes as her name and extension is IN THE AD!!!!

8.  Somehow, the girl finds out that corporate security has identified her.  She calls the VP of CS, at his home, and pleads with him not to have her fired.

9.  Dept head, who was retarded as well, gives the girl more chances than I would have gotten had I did this, to straighten out and fly right.

10.  She can't produce the work at a level consistent with her claimed abilities on her resume.

11.  After many, many opportunities to get it right, they finally tell her to clean her desk out.  I was told the day before to take a free vacation day!  Yay!!!  That's my best memory of the whole incident.

The whole thing was retarded.  Retarded all the way down.

388 IMHO as a non-expert the "coins" thing is like every other "extreme investment" thing in the last 20 years (actually longer) - except that it's not intended to be as high-profit and some of the peeps really think they're trying to make something last. But in the end it's a way to try to get around ponzi laws by constructing labyrinthine systems. But like the others, if you somehow know when to get out and are there when they start, you *can* make money off of them. From what I see bitcoin is past that point. There are like ten other versions, though I have no way of knowing whether they'll "work." But people are pretty desperate to make money or extend their retirements, though. There were some "alternate currency projects" in the early 00's not *too* different (though not the same) that are gone now, IIRC.

392 Have no doubt this is coming to our shores. We have sliding down the slippery slope for years heading for this destination. One of the only remaining restraints on our tyrannical unlimited government has been the need for them to get re-elected and not tax people to death. Well, here we are at a point where both are almost non-existent. We are at a point where they can simply take whatever dollars they need to hand out the free, vote for me goodies. The only remaining option we have is to not produce property that can be confiscated – meaning that those who really pay the taxes go on strike (at least temporary at first) as a protest against the government. Strike before they become so powerful that they make that option illegal. April 15th can be the first day for these strikes as a symbolic start.

408 Why is it any damn surprise to conservatives on what liberals think of 401K's and other retirement funds?  They've admitted over and over again that they do want to take your rainy day fund but it just not ideal to do so in any given political climate.  When the circumstances favors them, they won't hesitate.  It's just free money to them and your money to spend on their pet project and minions.

409 yeah, then spend weeks searching for them in bombed out office desks, file cabinets, and a few cola vending machines. So, Detroit then...

410 So, Detroit then...

I look at pictures of downtown Detroit and I can't tell them apart from scenes in Fallout 3.

411 Fallout 3 probably has better graphics.

412 410 EC,

Yeah the big brouhaha over FO4 being in Boston?

That's because nobody would buy "Monday in Downtown Detroit" as an RPG cute Ghouls or no...

413 I'll be happy to play Fallout 4.  I'm also looking forward to Saints Row 4 which is set in Washington DC.  Be nice if the Saints Row have a turf war against the Republicans and Democrats.

414 Speaking of Detroit, the state is having the city turned over to an emergency manager and the black community is shitting a brick.  Al Sharpton and Jesse Jackson are coming in to organize strikes against the emergency manager.  They want to keep the corruption going on.

415 >>at some point debts must be paid<< If you're talking about financial debts, you're a fool. If you're talking about unredressed national slights, well, that's a different historical matter.

416 I liked Kelo's answer, but u are right probably just tax the bejesus out of the property. No real good way to protect your 401k.

417 It's easier to steal it via inflation, if they started raiding 401Ks or doing a wealth tax, the Elites know there would be a combination of blood in the streets and capital flight.

But liberals can't help themselves, and my guess is if the American people keep sending them to office because of small, stupid issues, they will overreach and try something like that when the shit starts hitting the fan.

Europeans can't print like the US can, which is why these sort of draconian actions are being taken.  If we had a Fed that had a leash on it, we would be forced to live more within our means.

421 2 paid off pieces of property and three years behind in property taxes. Every year it's the same scramble to keep the county from taking it. One year, they were so backed up with foreclosures that they gave us until June to come up with the money. If they want what you have, they will come up with a way to take it.

422 Same here Notso. I have 5 paid for and it is a struggle.

423 Deal with it the same way German Jews did against the Nazis.

Turn the cash into valuables. Then sneak them out.

I read about one family fleeing to Spain with a nearly dead automobile, and a fortune in platinum molded into the shape of a set of beat up greasy wrenches and tire jack in a tool box.

The Nazi guards turned out their pockets, took all their petty cash, and ordered them to get that wreck of an automobile out of Germany.

424 Notso and Unclezeb: When I bought my first home ( with cash ), my main criteria was what kind of property taxes were in place, and what kind of government I would have to deal with.

Which is why I live in Wyoming.
