— Open Blogger See, we're not really robbing you per se, we're giving you a "share" in the enterprise!
...Under conditions expected to be announced on Saturday, depositors in Bank of Cyprus will get shares in the bank worth 37.5 percent of their deposits over 100,000 euros, the source told Reuters, while the rest of their deposits may never be paid back...The bad news is that 37.5% of zero is still zero, and the plane is crashing. The worser news is your parachute was stolen and your share doesn't have a rip cord.

"Worth" 37.5%? Well, if the bank stock was really worth what they are claiming, then all they'd have to do is sell it on the open market and people would be lining up to buy it and they wouldn't need to confiscate deposits. Yeah, right, that stock is worth is about zero if not less.
And keep in mind that according to our banking law, when you deposit funds with a bank, the bank owns those funds. All you have is a claim on those funds, supposedly guaranteed by the FDIC. But as a matter of ownership, the courts have ruled the banks owns the money.
Just keep that in mind.

After all that's happened in the last decade, you'd think the sheep have caught on. They haven't. In the past 2 weeks I've heard numerous people tell me how real estate is poised for a huge comeback and now is the time to load up on condos at pennies on the dollar to flip them for huge profit in a year or two. It's like we've been transported back to 2004 and our memories about the housing bubble/crash have been erased.

I just started reading them since Cyprus happened. But the belief that we're at the start of the end now is my belief since we're now seeing savings deposits looted from banks in order for politicians to continue spending just so they can stay in power.
Cyprus destroyed whatever trust might have still existed between citizens and banks and governments. I don't see how this can continue...

And another thing to remember. To you, a depositor, a deposit is an asset. To a bank, they are a liability. The banks assets are the cash on hand it has, plus all the loans it has made (plus stocks and other crap, like derivatives, etc, etc). That is the asset side of its balance sheet. When those go to hell, then liabilities (which are the deposits mostly) exceed that. By wiping out deposits, you make the bank whole again on paper.
And you just those deposits you made are now equity the depositors put in, hence the stock conversion.
This will happen here, make no mistake.

Zero Hedge is a fun site to read, if you don't take it too seriously.
It's a lot like reading Debka. Sometimes interesting, sometimes bullshit.
We'll see if this spreads beyond Cyprus. It was a special case, in many ways, too little to have the kind of financial leverage that a major state has, yet a bank haven for a lot of rich Russians. And the greedy Euro elite thought they could staunch some bleeding bond problems with outright theft.
The next 60 days will be interesting. War with N. Korea, Syria collapses, Obama goes on vacation again. Anything could happen.

Per the comment above from SF Goth (from Reuters)
The problem is the point spread between what government bonds are selling for and interest rates. Which right now is real tiny.
If inflation kicks in with a vengeance (and it probably will someday), an awful lot of banks are gonna go tits up, and yeah, they will take your money assets (401K and IRA) and replace them with crappy government paper, which will be illiquid for quite a while.
Think of the whole GM bankruptcy scam writ very large.

Timing in the US? It probably won't be in 2013. And we may get some clues. But if something dramatic happens to wratchet the economy around, then it may move up the timeline.
And don't think a lot of "boomers" aren't thinking the same thing. A big move by millions of our cohort to liquidate savings could trigger something bad, too.

“The Army objects to (the proposal) because it would undermine the prosecution of Major Nidal Hasan by materially and directly compromising Major Hasan’s ability to receive a fair trial. This provision will be viewed as setting the stage for a formal declaration that Major Hasan is a terrorist, on what is now the eve of trial. Such a situation, prior to trial, would fundamentally compromise the fairness and due process of the pending trial,” the document said.
I fail to see how this legislation would deny Major Hasan’s ability to receive a fair trial. He is a terrorist, and the DoD’s continuing efforts to pawn off his terrorism as “workplace violence” tells you how stupid the Obama Administration thinks the American people really are. Sorry, I have to disagree. There's a good argument for publicly pretending that Islam is all sweetness and light, namely, to help keep pussified leftists here and abroad on board (or at least not provide them with grist for their agitprop), and to have a shot at splitting radical Muslims from the not-so-radical ones.
Having said that, everyone knows that full-on, no-shit Islam is a bloodthirsty, murderous death cult bent on world domination, but it's sometimes politic not to let on that one realizes that.

I'm going to short form repeat my ranting about this - those who refuse to hold radical Islamists to the most basic standards of human decency are the utter bigots who are treating those individuals as having no agency or will of their own. It's an assumption that they are wee little children who just can't help it and who aren't actually fully human and thus responsible for their own actions.
It's vile is what it is.

Goddamnit, now I'm really depressed.
If we ever have to hit Ctrl-Alt-Del on this republic - and it increasingly looks as though we will - in American republic 2.0 we need to bring back hanging (within a year of conviction, as in Victorian times) as a method of execution (none of that pussified lethal injection; hell, most Mondays I'd opt for that myself), and condition voting on paying taxes or serving in the military. Disenfranchise the FSA.
