Cyprus predictions [Purp]
— Open Blogger

With the govt having effectively killed InTrade, we're left up to our own prediction devices. There's a poll just below if you got JavaScript enabled.

You thought planet killer space rocks were a big problem eh? Turns out the greatest extinction level threats we face are more terrestrial in nature...

...open predicting. Puntitificate to your hearts content..but don't forget to bring the racism. This post sports the new fresh lilac smell racism in the new and improved extra large economy size box.

3 It's a MADHOUSE.

Monday's gonna be interesting to see how the State Run media tries to cover this up or ignore it. Especially if there's a Europe wide bank holiday.

4 I suspect there will be a little violence, but Europeans are pretty inured to the idea that they're disposable property by now. Generally speaking, violence in Europe seems to be centered around ethnicity or an ideology calling for *more* government, not less.

27 I have to give the EU props for being able to paper over their impending disaster for the past two years plus, albeit with a shit-load of US tax payers cash.

It's likely to blow over with few repercussions, BUT there is a small chance that some of the similar smaller countries in the EU might have a bank-run as well. If more than two of the smaller ones blow up, the cascade could be dramatic.

Posted by: willow-ette at March 17, 2013 04:42 PM (nqBYe) I can't speak to Cyprus specifically, but in general Europe only has a left wing. What they call "right wing" is just a different brand of authoritarian left wing. We in the US have, very roughly speaking, right and left *coalitions* where the left is primarily collectivist and authoritarian and the right is individualist but rather uncomfortably split along the authoritarianism spectrum, not just two ways. Probably the biggest confusion is in Europe "conservatives" are preserving national cultures and power structures that go back hundreds of years, in the US "conservatives" are looking back to a "classical liberal" explosion of ideas and freedom. To make it worse, a lot of American "liberals" use "European" concepts, reason #214 why We Just Can't Talk Anymore. I think in general journalists are self-righteous pets of one state or another.

a) Germans need a vacay destination on the same continent that's not Russia.
b) They don't want to have to rebuild Europe after they take it over
c) They're trying to keep the Russians (and the Poles) out.
d) They're biding their time until they're "invited" in.

48 #9--Spot on. Given that interest rates are next to nothing here, one might as well stash the cash in the mattress; or buy commodities that are easily bartered. Don't think the thought hasn't crossed the minds of politicians here. First it will be 401(k)'s and SEP's, then regular deposits above a certain point. The beauty of  it is, it will be called a tax, thereby skirting 5th Amendment issues. It's an easier solution than inflating the value away.

49 You Blind/UN-Patriotic/Obama-hating/Racist/Bigot Republicans make me sick!
I am sick and tired of hearing brain-damaged people describe our President as being a Socialist or Marxist or Trotskyite or whatever they call him these days when they don’t have any clue what any of those words mean, they only call him that cause they can’t call him “n i g g e r” ! They won’t give him any credit for his accomplishment, but rather just ignore them and call him names.

Obama has overhauled the food safety system – “Obama nationalized all farms.” Advanced women’s rights in the work place – “Obama implemented a single standard wage for all workers.” Ended Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell (DADT) in our military – “Obama implemented compulsive military or civilian service.” Stopped defending DOMA in court. – “Outlawed all religious marriage” Passed the Hate Crimes bill. – “Passed an antisedition act prohibiting all speech which is not glorifying to the state.” Appointed two pro-choice women to the Supreme Court – “Replaced all nine justices with suitable replacements.” Expanded access to medical care and provided subsidies for people who can’t afford it. – Nationalized all health insurance companies Expanded the Children’s Health Insurance Program (CHIP) – “Nationalized all health providers Fixed the preexisting conditions travesty [and rescissions] in health insurance. – Executed all insurance company executives for crimes against humanity” Invested in clean energy. – “Directed National Energy Corps to disassemble coal power plants and replace them with wind and solar.” Overhauled the credit card industry, making it much more consumer-friendly. – “Nationalized all banks.” He got help for people whose health was injured during the clean-up after the 9/11 attacks. – “Continued Bush-era cover-up of hazardous breathing conditions following 9/11 attacks” He’s got Osama Bin Laden – “Used Osama bin Laden as a bogeyman to convince people to do everything else he wanted.”

I just feel like it needs to be pointed out over and over again: Obama’s a capitalist. His economic advisers are all capitalists. His solutions for our economic problems rarely make it as far left as “liberal,” much less actually socialist.

You want to know whoÂ’s a socialist? Mitt Romney. Mitt RomneyÂ’s Bain Capital specialized in leveraged buyouts of companies with rich pension systems, which Bain then raided and left taxpayers holding the bag for. His $250 million cost taxpayers billions. But Mitt Romney, like other Republicans, is only a socialist when it comes to Mitt Romney. The rest of us get Mitt Romney capitalism, which consists of Mitt Romney stealing our retirement while telling us not to be so lazy.

You think Jeb Bush could run next time? No he canÂ’t, because George is still (the worst president ever according to NewsweekÂ’s recent poll). A majority of voters still blame Bush more than Obama when theyÂ’re asked whoÂ’s responsible for the rotten economy.

I was right again, Anyone who hates Obama Is in fact a racist! What a bunch of sick, ridiculous, hateful posts you Conservatives write on your dumbass blogs. And oh my God, the names that you call the Liberal, or Progressives bloggers who are supporters of the president.

Calling the President supporters a POS and other names seems usual for you right-wing racists and bigots like you! You are a sick, demented racist, bigoted Un-American scum! Judging by your sick, and demented blogs. This is why mentally damaged people have absolutely NO business on a computer..you are too stupid. You canÂ’t blame one person for the downfall of the economy. But if you were going to then blame Bush. No. The GOP screwed America and has stood in the way of the President trying to fix it. The Republicans are hoping for failure of the President so that you can win an election thereby screwing millions of job seeker just to defeat Obama. The GOP are a bunch of sick, anti Americans.
Jesus Christ, you are mentally stupid, pathetic, and a liar. Yes the left criticized Bush, but that fact remains most dwelled on his policies only, asshole.

Was President Bush vilified by racists, bigoted, extremists on the left like Obama? NO!
Was President Bush questioned about his birth certificate, his religion, his ideology, his loyalty to America? NO!
Has President BushÂ’s victory caused hate groups to rise to great levels? NO!
Was President Bush called every single vile name in the bookÂ…maybe some, but nothing like President Obama has!
Has President Bush got 400% of racist e-mails and death threats, more than any other president in history? NO!
Were there an insurmountable list of racist tea party signs and rants against President Bush like there were with President Obama? NO!
Was Laura Bush racially insulted, vilified, compared to a monkey like Michelle Obama? NO! in fact. most left-wing people didnÂ’t like Bush but STILL loved and respected the hell out of Laura Bush, you racists insult, smear, and attack Michelle Obama for every little thing.

THIS.

I've been waiting for the derivative market to go south for awhile.

Our banks. Here in the US. Including your little local town bank. ARe up to their eyeballs in "assets" that are really derivatives based on sovereign debt overseas. It's what cause MF Global to collapse and steal their clients money (see a trend there?)

Well, everyone's in that game because the FED (aka Helicopter Ben) pushes it as a way for them to meet their obligations for assets. They will even harass a competent and fiscally responsible banker who doesn't like the looks of those "investments" by audits and other investigations.

We sitting on the tippy top of a house of cards and someone just pulled a jack out of the stack below us. The collapse may take awhile or it may happen tomorrow or it may take one more card.

As to ghoulish history, that's *all* of Europe. Whether they consider themselves victims or perpetrators, even if they don't actively study it, all that regional messiness is part of everyday life. 69 U.S. Cancels Final Phase Of Europe-Based Missile Defense System Yup, “more flexible” now. The United States has effectively canceled the final phase of a Europe-based missile defense system that was fiercely opposed by Russia and cited repeatedly by the Kremlin as a major obstacle to cooperation on nuclear arms reductions and other issues. Russian officials here have so far declined to comment on the announcement, which was made in Washington on Friday by Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel as part of a plan to deploy additional ballistic missile interceptors to counter North Korea. The cancellation of some European-based defenses will allow resources to be shifted to protect against North Korea. And the not so slow decline of American Power continues

They work hand in glove with the armed thugs, gubmint. as Commerzbank's chief economist notes, median wealth in Italy is EUR164,000 (as opposed to Austria's median of around EUR76,000 and mean of around EUR265,000) meaning that in theory Italy has no debt crisis (with net assets at 173% of GDP) - significantly more than the Germans at 124% - "so it would make sense, in Italy a one-time property tax levy," he suggested.

Make loans to family (well maybe not them) and friends that you trust.

Buy long lasting appliances, renew electric systems. invest in a generator. Depends on your ability and your capabilities and how much you have to invest. Buy stuff that will either be useful in a survival mode or will be valuable as barter or will be used in daily living.

126 Here's the deal. Do banks open in Italy tmwr? Do the rumors of a new 1000e withdraw limit in Italy prove true? EUR/x going to drop. It's already down, and will likely continue. In about another 50 pips we start having collateral calls. If you get a few % drop in actual deposits in Italy or Spain, you start getting collateral calls. You get that much volatility in a day, you start getting various sorts of covering. Tomorrow has the potential to be a very very bad day. Maybe the fed or ECB will step in and prop all sorts of things up like they've done in the past, requiring tens or hundreds of billions (which then become quasi-injected liquidity etc). All because, after all that's gone on over the last 5 years, the ECB finally balked at an extra paltry 7 billion? No, something is very strange here. Add HFT/algos into the mix and we're in for a wild day tmwr.

Add to this that the Obama economy is weaker than it should be, thanks to brain dead and fundamental misunderstandings of how economies work, I expect a domino effect that will build momentum and bite us in the ass in a few months, Undermine one economy. You're more correct than you know.  I have some serious issues with Chemjeff's posit on "living conservative values" this week but sadly I lack the time today and probably tomorrow to pursue them.

If you are engaging in traditional savings and investment methodology as currently rendered you're doing it wrong IMHO.

My "retirement" planning involves side businesses and floating high risk start up capital to budding small businessmen who work on the metaphorical Spanish main.

Anything you put into a numbered account that takes a millisecond to empty is as high risk a capital pool right now as loaning your neighbor a grand for a start up.

They will mainstream stilling about 5 trillion bucks these next four years.

But who could we get to lead the charge?  Rand Paul is in the Senate.

Actually, I think a lot of politicians with ambitions will use RP's stand as a template.  No filibuster in the house, but they can still make a stink, and demand something with teeth from Boehner.

(Yeah, I know, but he still wants to hang onto his speakership.)

But seriously, Obama would immediately mock and ridicule the bill, snorting with derision at the thought that such a thing was even worthy of being contemplated.  Then he'd get Dianne Feinstein to get her panties in a wad, so as to avoid answering the question.

Only due to colonialism were some areas elevated to higher orders of civilization and when the colonial powers left most sank back to the previous levels.

Smashburger was closed to the public for the night when two men entered the establishment shortly after 10:30 p.m., Police Officer Todd Colaianni said Sunday. One of the two men allegedly brandished a handgun during the holdup, Colaianni said. Five employees were in the restaurant at the time of the incident, he said. Translation from the Bureaucratese -- The old, whom have had time to save and will lose the most also tend to be less volatile and dangerous ---

The young, whom have not yet had much time to save, and therefore don't have much to take, will probably kill all our asses so we better find a way to calm them down.

Never mind that the old actually need it because they no longer have much working life left to replace their money, after all, it is the safety of my bureaucrat ass we are talking about.

'Direct Deposit'...has  now  become a Bad Idea.

I would imagine that a lot of people in Cypress will be trying to cancel their 'direct deposit' arrangements, with employers...and any other entities that they've set up direct depositing with.

That could be an effect here, as well....people cancelling their 'direct deposit' arrangements.

249 Well the Euro is now down about 1.2% against USD, GBP

According to comments elsewhere, anybody who shorted the Yen with Euro's (which you would have done when the bank of Japan declared it was going to print until the Nikkei rose 20% a few weeks back) is very sad right now.

Reminds me of the steelworker I knew in the '70's who used to brag about his benefits and how little he had to work. Steel went belly up in the '80's and labor still hasn't recovered from the hit. What isn't imported is made using automation. The Steel Workers Union walks real small these days and don't say much.

264 Can't opt out of Direct Deposit for SS payments and many other Federal payments.

The best you can get is a direct deposit in a debit card with low or no fees but I tried it and it sucks big time.

I figure what will happen will happen and if I can draw my money out fine but let's face it when we get to that point, the cash won't be worth much anyway.

I'm trying to stash away as much extra (what little there is) in stuff I'll need to get by if all payments stop or some bank incident happens.

I started stashing ammo before doing so was so widespread. I buy extra TP (toilet paper is a better invention than fire in my estimation), food and renovation/improvements to the ol' homestead.

One shining star this year; they did a reeval on property taxes and my taxes actually went down!!!!!11!!!! I know! I kept thinking it was a mistake but I got my first bill and it was 1/4 the previous amount.

Wooot!. Now I'm waiting for them to find some other way to f**k me.

298 @ 268, From what I understand, Cyprus has universal firearm registration and background checks to own firearms. You need to be specially licensed on top of all that to own a handgun or a semi auto assault rifle which includes background checks, YOU need to demonstrate a good reason to own it (hunting, collectiong, shooting sports, personal protection etc.). Background checks look into domestic violence, mental health, criminal history, yada yada. Sound familiar? Kind of like what the government wants to do here. OR worse yet, there will be collateral calls that will ripple through the system and OTHER banks on the continent may be affected which if THAT spreads will affect banks here.

They changed it to debit cards and direct deposit maybe 4-5 years ago to cut down on theft and fraud.

The same was attempted with EBT cards and is why crooked states like CA/MA wrote in provisions to allow their cards to withdraw cash directly at ATMs. Frauds and professional welfare recipients avoid having bank accounts like the plague because it would leave a paper trail and expose undeclared assets or double dipping of benefits.

425 Get 2-way radios.

Someone hit a telephone pole a mile away from the house last week. Power out around the area. Thought I'd check on the ancient neighbors, so I pulled out the old hard wired phone. Check.

Plugged hit in and got dial tone. Check.

Called the old neighbors and the old MIL a mile away. Not check

They all have broad band phone through Time Warner. No power to the little modem thingy that works the phones. And of course they don't have any of their old hardwired phones.

Called their cell phones. Besides them all being deaf as posts, the cell towers were either down from the power outage, or jammed due to the ramped up cellular traffic.

I live in a highly developed, reasonably well run city. One guy has a heart attack and knocks down a creosote telephone/power pole, and everyone is completely out of touch.

I have almost quit asking if anyone has .223/5.56. I looked across the counter and there were three boxes of 50rd .223 Rem. UMC at 29.99 a box. I bought two. re: Scots/ Irish:

The Scots were originally from Ireland, way back when, they crossed over to Britain, hence the similarities of Irish and Scots Gaelic.

Once they converted to Protestantism, the Brits used them to colonize the north of Ireland, most of Ulster, driving out most of the resident Catholic population.

Brits knew how to colonize, and that's the reason for the six counties of Northern Ireland not joining the Free State of Eire.

There  is  only  one  way  to  fix  this:   arrest  some  big  name  bureaucrats and  bankers  in Brussels,  have  public  trials  in  the  manner  of  Nuremburg  that  find  them guilty  of  exceeding  their  authority  over  the  sovereign  states  of  Europe   (essentially treasonous crimes against the European Order),   and  publicly  execute  them.

This  example  would  restore  trust  in  the  banking  system.  Anything  less  will  establish  European  banking  as  a  sucker's  game,  forever.  This  will never  happen,  so  a  sucker's  game  it will  be,  all  because  of  the  arrogance  and  the  hubris  of  the  European  elite.

Nope, Irish and Scots are Celtic, Vikings and most Germans are Teutons, if you go back far enough.

Different tribes, probably from the same source, that later intermingled. Like most of Caucasian Europe.

The Vikings covered a lot of ground, probably due to global cooling and infertile soil.

Russia is named after the "Rus" a band of Scandis that took over. The vikings made it as far as Sicily and the middle east, due to their boating technology and lack of fear.

Not much reason for younger brothers to stick around.

Anywho, a lot of  Norsemen (Normans, later) got in their shallow draft Dragon boats and kicked some serious ass throughout the "then known world".

And there's a great deal more stability in paternal genetics than scientists had assumed. They can at least make the case for "family trees" in existence for many thousands of years, which (through tracking their mutation rates from east to west) ended up in Great Britain after the end of the last Ice Age (roughly 12,000 years ago) and have been there ever since." 528 I like this one Y-5.

King Ranch Chicken Casserole

1 chicken (2 1/2 to 3 lbs.)
12 corn tortillas, torn
1 can cream of mushroom soup, undiluted
1 can cream of chicken soup, undiluted
1 large onion, chopped
1 can (10 oz) tomatoes with green chilies, undrained (like Rotel)
1 to 2 cups grated Cheddar cheese

Stew chicken in water in large pot til tender. Reserve 1 cup broth. Bone chicken, cut in bite size pieces.

Grease 9x13 baking dish. Place torn tortillas in bottom of dish. Layer chicken on top. Combine soups, onion, tomatoes and reserved 1 cup broth in saucepan; cook over med. heat until hot. Pour soup mixture over chicken. Top with grated cheese. Bake 350 for 50-60 mins, or until bubbly hot. Serve abt. 8-10

If I don't have tortillas on hand when ready to do the King Ranch recipe, I just stir in penne (or a similar) pasta and add rinsed black beans and maybe a dollop of sour cream. It's yummy that way, too.

Also, I just cook chicken tenderloin strips or breasts cut into strips rather than going thru all the trouble to boil and debone a chicken.

1 cup Minute rice

You can also use bone in chicken, either breasts, or a whole cut up chicken.  Just lower the temp. to 300 and bake about an hour and a half to two hours.

No need to overthink it, pretty much any of these combos work:

Meat of choice: chicken, pork, ground beef. A carb: rice, bread crumbs, pasta (I make a mean spaghetti casserole.) A veg: broccoli is really good, as are peas. A sauce: cream of chicken or mushroom, spaghetti. You can add salt/pepper or other spices, like Italian seasoning or cumin, etc, but not necessary. Dump in with your choices from each category, carb on bottom, sauce on top, and maybe top with cheese and you're good. I've found that if you precook the meat, or at least lightly pan sear it, any of those combos at around 350-360 degrees for twenty minutes, works.

And yes, slow cookers are amaze. Excellent soups can be made with a little chicken broth, vegetables, beans, noodles. Super easy and cheap.

600 Forty-Clove Chicken (closest thing to a casserole I know) Take one cut-up chicken, or four leg quarters, or whatever chicken parts you prefer. Brown it, then put in a crock along with some rosemary, salt, pepper, and at least a cup of olive oil. Add 10 to 20 UNPEELED garlic cloves. Bake for a couple of hours. While it cooks, bake (or heat up) a loaf of crusty bread. When it's done you've got lovely garlic-scented chicken, lovely roast garlic to spread on your crusty bread, and lovely garlic oil to dunk your bread in. If you want to stretch it, you can throw in some fingerling potatoes, which roast and get garlicky.

I have A LOT of canned goods, meats, fruit, and vegetables. I was looking at a barbecue due to our new home only having electric appliances. The winters and summers here are not particularly harsh ever like on the east coast, but I do worry if we didn't have access to heating in the winter with a power outage. I am on friendly terms with my neighbors, a mechanic, electrician, construction engineer, and both myself and my wife are in the medical field.

When done, pick up the whole bag, hold it over a big measuring cup, with scissors cut one corner - draining off about 3 cups of juice. Dump the meat and veggies back in the pan, back in the oven. Mix one packet of gravy mix into the hot juices - pour about half over the meat and veggies, save the other half for gravy. Simple.

675 NWC- Many of us have spent the past months (and some, years) trying to grasp what one needs to do in the potential alternate universe of a US economy that mirrors, say, Argentina when their currency collapsed in 2001.

I was asking these very same questions not so long ago, and it is wise that you are, too. This kind of thinking doesn't come natural to most of us, and is uncomfortable at least, and quite frightening at most. Develop a plan that is workable, work towards it. Hopeless mentioned some good ideas earlier.

680 NWC, Break debts down into secured and unsecured. CCs, SLs, are unsecured. Those are the ones you really want to blast out. It's nice to be debt free on a home as well, but not as important. You and the missus may enjoy checking out Dave Ramsey together, maybe in conjunction with a local church (they often run his program). Then make your own modification to the plan and monthly budget, with say 5% (or X%) going to prepping in some capacity. Booze, tobacco, tampons, go into this too. Good prepping guides are easy to find. This can be treated as a type of non-cash savings. 6 months of food and someone loses a job? You know where meals are coming from.

686 NWC, there is no reason everything in the freezer has to perish if power goes off. You should practice glass-jar canning, enough to know you can do it, then keep a medium dutch oven, a case or two of those jars and lids, and some extra outdoor fuel (tank of grill gas, bags of charcoal, stack of firewood, what have you).

As soon as the freezer starts to warm up, transfer your staple goods and whatever ice is left into smaller coolers, start eating the processed stuff, and get busy canning the contents of the freezer. You have a few days. You can store the jars back in the otherwise-useless freezer.

This isn't bunker-level stuff. Half a hall closet, or one corner of the garage, will store the materials you'll need.

Them Amish (or more often, their Mennonite cousins using "Amish" on the label) do some fine canning of chicken and beef. Dense, not like the watery little cans in a grocery store. Say goodbye to steak for a while, though. Steak ain't Amish.

687 No need to overthink it, pretty much any of these combos work:Meat of choice: chicken, pork, ground beef. Posted by: LizLem can I have your recipe for spaghetti casserole too?

688 If you want to stretch it, you can throw in some fingerling potatoes, which roast and get garlicky. Posted by: Trimegistus at March 17, never ever have too much garlic.

691 Honestly, what idiot in an EU country would have a single penny in a bank account after this?  Especially in places like Greece, Italy, Spain, etc. that are on the brink?

If this doesn't inspire a run on the banks, we finally have conclusive proof Europe is retarded.

Once the entitlements hit a wall here, they'll probably start trying something similar with a wealth tax on the 1%, with the other 99% probably cheering it on as it will pay for another 72 hours of entitlements.  That's when the wealthy move every penny offshore or just hoard precious metals.
