— LauraW FBI Investigating
Let's not jump to conclusions here. This could have just been a group of friends, all out walking by the picturesque waterside.
After midnight. While trespassing.
The seven individuals currently live in Amherst, Cambridge, Sunderland, Northampton and New York City.
From miles away...ok, this looks bad.
But do try to keep an open mind.
Just try.
State Police say the five men and two women are from Pakistan, Saudi Arabia, and Singapore, and “cited their education and career interests” for being in the area. The men told police they were chemical engineers and recent college graduates.
Oh.
Never mind.
Yes, jihadi terror cells are here, and they are keen to find more places and ways to kill us. I believe that is the unstated subtext of that article, because if the folks were ordinary local MIT types out goofing around, we wouldn't be reading a list of their national origins.
Kudos to the police for their vigilance, and to the FBI, good hunting.

Eh, even muslim engineers do incomprehensibly nerdy things. If they really are studying, say, civil engineering it might really be that they wanted to look at a reservoir.
But they're not studying civil enineering. They (at least 2 of them) are studying chemical engineering.
You'll excuse me if I'm a little bit skeptical.

Posted by: Bigby's Rodeo Hands at May 16, 2013 06:46 AM (3ZtZW)
My first thought was actually "Fishing". There's a reservoir back home that was rumored to have massive bass in it. Fishing was illegal (along with any other contact with the water), so once in awhile we'd hear of people being arrested for breaking into the reservoir grounds.
But yeah, probably jihadis this time.

This is exactly the kind of thing the Patriot Act was designed to cover. Unfortunately that well has been so poisoned (and it was none too clean to begin with), so they really don't have much choice.
It would have been nice if they'd detained them until they had verified identities, but I can understand why they wouldn't (see also: Bomber, Boston).

2. Probing ... as in Terror Threat

Yeah, was about to add that if they had claimed to be civil (or even mechanical) engineers, that would have been slightly more plausible. But only by a scintilla.
And none of that would explain why they'd be there at midnight.

Morning, all!
My question about this continues to be: why are chemical engineers interested in a water reservoir? H2O is kind of basic, isn't it?
("Unless it's kind of acidic!" the chemists chime in, because they know I love puns.)
This is an honest question, btw. WOULD chemical engineers have any particular reason to be interested in a water reservoir?

Honestly? Because water flows through pipes and eventually gets purified with chemicals and whatnot. My brief experience being a chem eng major told me it was all about the science of how things flow, thermodynamics, heat exchanges, etc. A reservoir is built on these sciences. It does fit, but there's no good reason for these people to be there at night without permission.

1) One more reason to be glad I'm on a well on my private property. Surrounded by private property wells.
2) I'm a Civil PE, and while there are relatively few Civils that work with reservoirs on a regular basis, the one's that do spend a lifetime at it.
3) If you want a tour of the damn (er... dam?) reservoir, just effin' call up the MWRA, and tell them you'd like a tour. In daylight. With a record and an escort. oh, wait.... does that interfere with your purpose? hmmmm.
4) Not for nothing, but the water supply to Boston is actually a bit more hardened of a target than the people hitting the panic button are letting on. But the Sturm and Drang is a good thing: a) encourages other stupid mistakes by terroridiots; b) keeps vigilance up.

Honestly? Because water flows through pipes and eventually gets purified with chemicals and whatnot. My brief experience being a chem eng major told me it was all about the science of how things flow, thermodynamics, heat exchanges, etc. A reservoir is built on these sciences. It does fit, but there's no good reason for these people to be there at night without permission."
None of which you can figger out by looking at a reservoir at night.

From what I saw, a reservoir would be a good example of the class material being put to use. Really, any industrial setting where liquids, gases, or semi-solids are flowing from one place to another can be of value to a student seeing things with their own eyes.

Just snip the power cord off of the toaster (probably better to unplug it first) and stick the snipped end into the cup, re-plug. Instant hot protein drink.

My father-in-law (God rest his soul) was VP of a large chemical company that was running into trouble back in the 80's for alleged pollution of a creek that ran through company property.
One night I was kidding him, asking him about the two headed tadpoles I'd heard they were finding in the creek.
He took a drag on his unfiltered Lucky, stared at me totally deadpan, and said, "Son, right now we're glad to have tadpoles, period."

Actually, it probably doesn't. Think about it, you go to the resevoir and take the tour. At some point you ask, innocently, "How much water does the reservoir hold?" No one will think twice- it's a perfectly innocent question (kids ask it all the time).
Then you go back to your terror planning facility dorm room, and do some Math!. You've already seen just about everything you need to see.

Bibi Besch as Dr. Carol Marcus. There are some Trek fans who think Carol could have been the "little blonde lab technician" Kirk admits he almost married when they were younger.
"Can I cook, or can't I?"
"Jim Kirk was many things, but he was never a Boy Scout."

Exactly. They were up to no good and the police are fucking idiots for not calling in the FBI for a closer look. If they were recent graduates, then they can produce their diplomas showing their Bachelor's or Master's or PhD in chem engineering. All the FBI agent has to ask them is, "What's the second law of thermodynamics?" and if they sit there like jelly on a bun, brace their fuckin' asses.

Except for the record part.... If you don't want any record of your involvement. As for the volume of the reservoir; while they don't have published Elv-Vol curves (that are easy to find - you can find the info if you know where to look) the gross volume of the reservoir is general public knowledge. Only other piece of information you'd really be interested in is where the headworks are located to handle discharge. Which may or may not be on the coast, or somewhere in the middle, of the reservoir.

Very few people remove their clothes at that temperature. So it's a safe guess that they were not there to make baby goat-centaurs
Besides which, there were SEVEN of them. Now if my math and biology will serve ...

F-in Entropy.
I hate Entropy, it's a pain. Except without it, we would not have friction. Friction is what makes sex feel good, so I guess I wouldn't vote it off the island.
