Damn. Tea Party Members Caught Scouting Out Possible Domestic Terror Site
— LauraW

FBI Investigating

Let's not jump to conclusions here. This could have just been a group of friends, all out walking by the picturesque waterside.

After midnight. While trespassing.

The seven individuals currently live in Amherst, Cambridge, Sunderland, Northampton and New York City.

From miles away...ok, this looks bad.

But do try to keep an open mind.

Just try.

State Police say the five men and two women are from Pakistan, Saudi Arabia, and Singapore, and “cited their education and career interests” for being in the area. The men told police they were chemical engineers and recent college graduates.

Oh.
Never mind.
Yes, jihadi terror cells are here, and they are keen to find more places and ways to kill us. I believe that is the unstated subtext of that article, because if the folks were ordinary local MIT types out goofing around, we wouldn't be reading a list of their national origins.

Kudos to the police for their vigilance, and to the FBI, good hunting.

I started out college as a chemical engineer. Then I went to the first semester of class. I had only one thing to say: fuck this.

Actually, EC, I did just the opposite. I started in pre-med, was pissed off at the lousy education I was getting, and switched to a program with some meat on it, with real math, chemistry and physics, instead of the Bill Nye versions that they teach to pre-med students. It seems doctors are not taught shit in school about actual science.

Except for the record part.... If you don't want any record of your involvement. As for the volume of the reservoir; while they don't have published Elv-Vol curves (that are easy to find - you can find the info if you know where to look) the gross volume of the reservoir is general public knowledge. Only other piece of information you'd really be interested in is where the headworks are located to handle discharge. Which may or may not be on the coast, or somewhere in the middle, of the reservoir.

Very few people remove their clothes at that temperature. So it's a safe guess that they were not there to make baby goat-centaurs

Besides which, there were SEVEN of them. Now if my math and biology will serve ...

185 You could dump a 55gal drum of sodium cyanide in something as large as that reservoir and nobody would notice.  By the time it went through chlorination (which'll kill most of the cyanide's poisony properties) and gets to consumers, it'd be so dilute as to be useless as a poison.

A downstream attack pumping some shit into the treatment plant's output would be far more effective.

186  "What's the second law of thermodynamics?"

I know that one! It's "You cant break even."

The first is " You can't win."
The third is "You can't get out of the game."

Whew. Thanks, Mike Hammer,  that did the trick.

I think I'll wait until it stops twitching and then throw it out the back door.

188 The words "Amherst" and "Northampton" make it clear these are terrorists. They don't even have to be Muslim. Those two towns are so full of America-hate they make Pyongyang look like Disneyland on the Fourth of July.

It is an irony that once one understands the Second Law, one is positioned to move to a state of less understanding.

191 That's because Entropy is always increasing, Mike.

F-in Entropy.

I hate Entropy, it's a pain. Except without it, we would not have friction. Friction is what makes sex feel good, so I guess I wouldn't vote it off the island.

I thought we already established that it was too cold out that night for fracking.
