Darknet cyber weapon peddlers have 85 exploits for sale on any given day
— Purple Avenger

The Podcast talks about healthcare.gov security issues being kept under wraps so tightly by the Obama administration they won't even tell congress. This seems kinda relevant.

Cyberweapons sold to the government that are powered by glitches in popular software have opened a can of worms for citizens who increasingly are being attacked by nongovernment actors buying from the same arsenal of 85 exploits per day, according to new research...
...On any given day during the past three years, high-paying customers have had access to at least 60 vulnerabilities targeting Microsoft, Apple, Oracle and Adobe, according to an NSS Labs...

...The weaknesses remain unknown to the public and, therefore, unfixed for an average of 151 days...

...In the underweb, where hackers hawk illegal goods, an exploit for a system running Windows sells for up to $250,000...

17 From #5... A table provided by ZDNet displaying Trustwave's findings show that the Linux kernel had the worst response time with an average of 857 days of time lapsed between initial vulnerability to patch - almost three years - followed by Microsoft Windows at 375 days. Yep. No defects whatsoever in Linux. No holes, noting whatsoever to see here.

What really worries me is not so much the fact that Obamacare web site gives hackers access to individuals' health information. It's that the thing is a portal that interacts with nearly every other federal system: principally, Homeland Security, Social Security, and the IRS. Each of those has is own security system, I'm sure. However, one cardinal sign of a floundering project is that managers start to regard security as an impediment rather than a necessity. I'm willing to bet a bright, shiny nickel that the OCare managers, in their haste to get the thing up and limping, have bypassed as much of that stuff as they possibly could. Which makes healthcare.gov an absolute Mecca for every cracker on the planet, from script kiddies, through the Russian mafiosi, to the Chinese military.

Bad as the news has been so far, I don't think we yet perceive even the scope of the catastrophe that Obama has created.

39 Purp, the problem with that "OS Fix" thing (and I don't think Linux fares any better here, either) is that MS doesn't really worry about those exploits very much- they expect the TPLs (like Norton, McAfee, etc) to handle them. So while MS may take a year or so to fix an exploit, the Malware protection software will normally have fixed in a matter of weeks*. *-He said as a "best guess" with no citation

Exactly.

A hacker has no reason to ruin my reputation. Indeed, he has a small incentive/mutual interest in my a good reputation.

The government, full of people who think my political views make me an Unperson, on the other hand . . . .

Like I said, the same government that can hack your email, track any and every move you make on the internet it the same government that can do much worse.
From deleting any and all proof you've paid your taxes to spoofing comments with your name, to sending racist or pornographic content under your name.
And they have the ability to completely cover their tracks. (Or at least beyond the ability of your finances to find them.)

55 Gotta love the smarmy Linux jackanapes.

Those are mostly just users, not people who've examined the code involved.

One of the things with Linux is its highly variable binary package in the field.  Anyone can build a system with compiler switches twiddled from the stock stuff that Torvalds and company officially "bless", and/or make modifications of their own that could introduce vulnerabilities.

The combinatorial explosion of binary differences in the field that can result from such compiler option twiddling is infinite and untestable.

Compilers are not perfect.  When you deviate from a fully tested configuration, all bets are off.  I've seen compilers generate different code depending on the contents of source code comments (and I'm not talking about pragma directives intended to alter code generation behaviors).

Windows, for better or worse, established a single binary "latest code" standard for any given platform.  That alone is a huge step towards attaining some measure of tractability in testing

Agreed. After the whole Joe the Plumber episode (and earlier, the release of Linda Tripp's performance appraisals)  it's become clear that any state or federal tool with access thinks it's OK to retrieve and leak at will.

What I find fishy that they're being so lax - especially with the Obamacare site that has *no* security. That doesn't just happen, that was a conscious decision, and it makes me wonder why. Is it to create plausible deniability when the Plan Navigators inevitably mine the Obamacare site?

95 Yes, hardware DOES SUCK.  Every Intel CPU subsequent to the 80286 E-step (which was clean) has been rife with nasty errata.

The 486's were particularly vile even though the "Pentium bugs" got all the press attention.  The 486's were so bad Intel considered the 486 errata sheets confidential information and you had to sign non-disclosure to see them.

The 486's has some real bad ones that even the OS could not work around that affected code execution paths and results in user apps.  Very, very exploitable stuff at the hardware level.

Thank Odin that most 486's are landfill by now..

It's unfortunate that Microsoft screwed the pooch when it came out- for instance, it wouldn't do POP3 e-mail, which was ridiculous.  Plus it was just too damned expensive after buying the almost-mandatory keyboard cover.

After the recent 8.1 update it's actually a pretty damned good tablet once you get used to Windows 8.  It's far better than the ASUS Android tablet it's replacing.

Also the government was going to give permission to some indian tribe to kill a bald eagle for some ceremony. Posted by: Jaimo ------------------ Well, Duke Energy is being fined. But here is the thing, the utilities are being *compelled* by law to provide some percentage of "alternative energy", so they put up windmills. Then, the bird deaths occur, so the company is fined for that. So through the whole deal, who is paying? Why, the taxpayer for the subsidies, then, the ratepayers for the higher cost of the windmill-generated energy, then, the ratepayers for the fines. But 'green', so all is well.

173 Windows, for better or worse, established a single binary "latest code" standard for any given platform. That alone is a huge step towards attaining some measure of tractability in testing

Unless you've applied hotfixes, or opted out of certain updates, or whatever.  There's no such thing as a 100% binary-identical system, even on Windows.

And of course Red Hat provides an equivalent "latest code" standard for Linux.  In particular, the version of the compiler they ship is always better than the upstream one that e.g. Canonical gets stuck with.

Incidentally, the base WinNT kernel is really, really good (at the NtXXX() level).  It's everything on top of it that fucks things up, especially once you install any Adobe products.

221 What I find fishy that they're being so lax - especially with the Obamacare site that has *no* security. I have many competing guesses about that one. 1. They had an experienced Architect step forward and design something beautiful, that lasted four minutes before the gov't 9 trillion conflicting change requests tore the thing down, consumed it, digested it, pooped it out, then lit it on fire. Then they took the charred ashes and duct taped the thing together with 40 trillion java scripts. 2. They had a out of the box (sort of) solution ready that was a generalized version of what they gave Canada. They tried to strap that thing onto the unholy abortion of Obama requirements and came up with Frankenstein's Monster's nightmare. 3. Someone from gov't was directing everything, the people trying to turn Unicorn Farts into real code had to make a million guesses that all turned out to sort of work, if you turned off all security and wished really hard.

234 As I recall seeing here, the Obama Administration refused to roll out the charts and pictures illustrating the Obamacare structural requirements to states implementing their own exchanges, for fear that the evil Republicans would use it to illustrate how unwieldy and complex the systems had to be.  Instead the Administration suggested praising those state implementations that got it right, in order to nudge other states in the right direction.

As it turns out, that political suppression of otherwise useful information may have been a boon for the states that decided to implement their own exchanges and got it mostly right, or at least a tad better than Barky's signature accomplishment, despite the woeful level of interest and ultimate result of mostly just shunting people to Medicaid.

According to two former officials, CMS staff members struggled at “multiple meetings” during the spring of 2011 to persuade White House officials for permission to publish diagrams known as “concepts of operation,” which they believed were necessary to show states what a federal exchange would look like. The two officials said the White House was reluctant because the diagrams were complex, and they feared that the Republicans might reprise a tactic from the 1990s of then-Sen. Bob Dole (R-Kan.), who mockingly brandished intricate charts created by a task force led by first lady Hillary Clinton.

In the end, one of the former officials said, the White House quashed the diagrams, telling CMS, instead, to praise early work on those state exchanges that matched the hidden federal thinking.
