David Frum Is An Idiot - Open Thread
— Pixy Misa

Discuss.

I pointed out on Twitter that David Frum isn't repected by either Democrats or Republicans. He was involved in the Bush administration, but he'll never get another job with a Republican administration. The Dems won't take him because people like him are a dime a dozen.

All he has left is trolling.

BTW, my response.

28 No no, he's got a point. It should be a little red flag like on mailboxes, so everyone else can see if it's loaded or not as well. Also, the little red flag would be a safety, designed such that no gun can fire with a round in the chamber. Even if it's just a bullet rattling around in there by it's lonesome. If you need to shoot someone in this country, you should have to go through a judge to order a drone strike.

Posted by: TexasDan at February 18, 2013 07:58 AM (Fa3Hi)

29 There is a mechanism to indicate whether a round is in the chamber. When the trigger is pulled the round alert mechanism goes "Bang!"

67 Personally, my first clue is the byline: DAVID FRUM.

It's sort of self identifying.

Similar to when I see and article by Paul Krugman or David Brooks.

I don't have to read the article to know that a) I won't agree with most or anything that they have to say. b) they'll be smug and snarky c) they will have written it as if they're the final word.

And of course anything that reports what Mr. McCain has mumbled makes me think to myself "what has he given away/surrendered to a Democrat Liberal today?"

Now we know why Meggie Mac is the intellectual star that she is.

Yes, but, the investigations by Jayna Davis point to some real unanswered questions regarding the OKC bombing.  Do not forget that Clinton wanted the investigations wrapped up quickly and cleanly with McVeigh and Nichols being the only perpetrators.  No one ever explained how they got the money for their exploits or McVeigh's ties to Islamists in the Phillipines.  I am by no means a conspiracy theorist, but, there are nagging questions.

BTW, I finally made a visit to the memorial at the beginning of the month and it is well worth a visit.

During hunter's ed, they tell you a story that I've always wondered if it was apocrypha or not.  The general gist of it is, guy has a rife with an under-barrel magazine (not unlike a shotgun.)  He cleans it out, removes the bullets from the chamber and what he thinks is all the bullets from the magazine.

However, one was caught up near the top of the tube.  Some time later, he's screwing (adjusting the trigger or something) with the gun, and it goes off (as the bullet has become dislodged and thus loaded the gun.

I've always wondered if this was possible, or just some scare story.  Either way, it makes the point everyone here is making.  Any gun=loaded (unless completely disassembled on my cleaning table.)

Yup.  But that handy little feature or the ridiculous lawer features on  other models is no substitute for ALWAYS assuming the ammo fairy has paid you a visit.  Drop the mag, work the slide, visually inspect the chamber.  Or, if you want to check that you ARE loaded, do a press check.

I've run across this argument before.

I can see your point but when it's a casual comment or even the stupid point of a vacuous article by an even larger empty volume, it's okay to allow a little slack.

If Frum (or any one else for that matter ) was a firearms expert or testifying as one, then I'd be concerned at the lack of exactitude in their terminology.

Otherwise, if you understand what they mean then let it slide. Like how you let typos and bad grammar go unless it's over 50% of the comment/article.

146 Yes, but, the investigations by Jayna Davis point to some real unanswered questions regarding the OKC bombing.

We just never learn. For example, Lenin passing a new decree that adds extra penalties to some crime. Incredibly, theres a country-wide spike in that exact crime! All other crimes are down except for that one. Then, its off to the next social issue. Repeat. Reminds me of our sudden gun violence problem. Anyways, book gives me the chills. We must not fold to incrementalism. I wish kids read books like this in school instead of wishy-washy feel good garbage designed to say absolutely nothing and everything so as not to be controversial or offensive. The only comfort I take is that the enablers always get their turn in the barrel.

209 Appearing on a Chicago Sunday morning talk show, superintendent Garry McCarthy expressed his conviction that firearm owners who lobby their elected representatives or who donate money to political campaigns are engaged in corruption that endangers public safety. McCarthy went on to express his belief that judges and legislators should rely on public opinion polls when interpreting our Constitution.

After dismissing the citizen's right to redress grievances, McCarthy focused on the 2nd Amendment. Despite recent court decisions to the contrary, McCarthy opined that the 2nd Amendment limits citizens to owning smooth-bore muskets. McCarthy went on to say that he believes the 2nd Amendment supports mandatory liability insurance for firearm owners and the mandatory application of GPS tracking devices to civilian owned firearms.

220 What the hell would an indicator do that simple firearms safety doesn't? If you're relying on a little tab to let you know when a round is chambered you will eventually have a negligent discharge.

It's a convenience  feature, and should be viewed as nothing more.  All it does is to provide an easier way of checking the chamber than pulling back the slide.

It's not there to tell you it's safe, but to tell you it's loaded.

My problem is that the damned battery hold bar (or whatever it's called) has a bolt that comes out right next to something (I think it's the washer fluid).  So I end up needing a long socket wrench with a 90 degree extender on it to come at it from the opposite direction. (or something, I forget I haven't replaced the damned battery in like 4 years.)

I've done it myself before, but the car died on the way to a friends house (who has more tools than I do.) so we jumped it and went there rather than back to my place anyway.  I sprung for a little nicer battery (with a 7 year warranty) this time, so I don't really expect problems again. 253 If you want to know if the chamber is loaded,  just look at it.  Is that really so hard?  (At worse you may have to spend 1-2 seconds to open the chamber to look).

The issue, though is that no amount of technological sophistication can overcome basic human stupidity.

If you're going to handle a gun in an unsafe manner, no chamber loaded indicator is going to stop you because you're going to ignore it (the same way you ignore all the gun safety rules).

Chamber loaded indicators can be helpful to tell if your gun is or isn't loaded in the dark, or without having to take your eyes off of something ELSE you're watching, but they can never stop people from being stupid, drunk, or irresponsible.

More to the point, they do absolutely ZERO to deter crime, since presumably criminals are still going to load their guns!

So
Guess that's too har dforDuh.

262 Every additional gadget on a firearm is another potential point of failure.  You have to balance simplicity, reliability, and safety.  Additional items, like a cartridge indicator, have to be extensively tested before they can be trusted.  But since the price of an unplanned firing can be catastrophic, some common sense has to be present, despite owning the best, most reliable firearm in the universe.  That is where Jeff Coopers Rules for Firearms kicks in:
RULE I: ALL GUNS ARE ALWAYS LOADED

RULE II: NEVER LET THE MUZZLE COVER ANYTHING YOU ARE NOT WILLING TO DESTROY

RULE III: KEEP YOUR FINGER OFF THE TRIGGER UNTIL YOUR SIGHTS ARE ON THE TARGET

RULE IV: BE SURE OF YOUR TARGET

Now, as far as David Frum goes, what would you do, David, if your car's engine went full throttle without your input?  Do you know how to stop it before you run over someone?  Do you have common sense? Do you think about things like this?

My Seacamp also has a small opening at the end of the chamber, where you can see if there is a round in the chamber.

275 Interesting how ignorant your posters are. I am an enormous firearms fan, but I live in Massachusetts, where retail handgun sale are bound by safety rules..

Section 16.03 is labeled Tamper Resistant Serial Numbers, stating that a handgun purveyor may not offer to transfer a handgun if the serial number is susceptible to eradication.

Section 16.04, “Sale of Handguns Made From Inferior Materials” sets both a performance test and a material composition test. However, the materials composition test does not apply if the handgun meets the Make and Model Performance Requirements.

Section 16.05 “Sale of Handguns Without Childproofing or Safety Devices” requires that all handguns sold have a safety device, contain a mechanism which precludes an average five year old from operating the handgun, and requires all semi-automatic handguns to contain a load indicator or magazine safety disconnect.

So not only is David Frum correct, his vision is actually the law in MA. It means that handgun design needs to meet certain standards. In the long run, you will see all new handguns made this way since the liability of not following this law, even in other states, will be high, and the changes are cheap.

I don't agree with David on much, but in this case, his question is accurate.
