— Ace Great piece. It's partly about guns, partly about everything.
Karl Marx summed up Communism as “from each according to his ability, to each according to his needs.” This is a good, pithy saying, which, in practice, has succeeded in bringing, upon those under its sway, misery, poverty, rape, torture, slavery, and death.‘In announcing his gun control proposals, President Obama said that he was not restricting Second Amendment rights, but allowing other constitutional rights to flourish.’
For the saying implies but does not name the effective agency of its supposed utopia. The agency is called “The State,” and the motto, fleshed out, for the benefit of the easily confused must read “The State will take from each according to his ability: the State will give to each according to his needs.” “Needs and abilities” are, of course, subjective. So the operative statement may be reduced to “the State shall take, the State shall give.”
All of us have had dealings with the State, and have found, to our chagrin, or, indeed, terror, that we were not dealing with well-meaning public servants or even with ideologues but with overworked, harried bureaucrats. These, as all bureaucrats, obtain and hold their jobs by complying with directions and suppressing the desire to employ initiative, compassion, or indeed, common sense. They are paid to follow orders.
Rule by bureaucrats and functionaries is an example of the first part of the Marxist equation: that the Government shall determine the individualÂ’s abilities.
As rules by the Government are one-size-fits-all, any governmental determination of an individualÂ’s abilities must be based on a bureaucratic assessment of the lowest possible denominator. The government, for example, has determined that black people (somehow) have fewer abilities than white people, and, so, must be given certain preferences. Anyone acquainted with both black and white people knows this assessment is not only absurd but monstrous. And yet it is the law.
President Obama, in his reelection campaign, referred frequently to the “needs” of himself and his opponent, alleging that each has more money than he “needs.”
But where in the Constitution is it written that the Government is in charge of determining “needs”? And note that the president did not say “I have more money than I need,” but “You and I have more than we need.” Who elected him to speak for another citizen?
It is not the constitutional prerogative of the Government to determine needs.
He gets into guns on the back nine.

24...Please please please go for their guns!!!
Even BJ Clinton said "ix-nay on the gun control push", and tried to warn them.
He signed Feinstein's gun ban Bill back in 1993...and the Dems lost both Houses of Congress in 1994.
Even if it doesn't get passed this time, I think the damage is done.
It will be an issue in next year's midterms either way.

What I got from the whole article was that he was specifically abstaining- because no one has the right to determine what another needs- from saying that no one needs automatic weapons.
That is, he, specifically, agrees that no one "needs" them in the same way that he agrees that no one "needs" $1bn.
I also disagree with him, but I'm fine with him being wrong so long as he acknowledges he has no right or position which allows him to oppose that opinion on me.

"After mentioning the estimated 80,000 to 82,000 DGUs reported by the National Crime Victimization Survey, they note that “other surveys imply that private firearms may be used in self-defense up to two and a half million times each year” and mention as their source, Gary Kleck and Marc Gertz, “Armed Resistance to Crime: the Prevalence and Nature of Self-Defense with a Gun,” Journal of Criminal Law and Criminology, v. 86, no. 1, pp. 150-187. In footnote 4, they state, “Kleck and Gertz’s survey (1995, pp. 182-3) of 10 other nationwide polls implies a range of 764,036 to 3,609,682 defensive uses of guns per year.” "

Honestly, I don't even remember any of them, off the top of my head, except Zeppo. And him only because of BtvS (which is highly Ironic, because he was used because he's the Marx Brother everyone forgets).

True, the Proggies do, but the people they're trying to convince- my family, for instance- don't.

Thank you. Someone needs to remind the Consitutional Scholar known as Fly Guy that he doesn't rank rights as to their relation to each other. They existed before him and will exist after he is gone.
He can only temporarily suppress the exercise of rights, like all tyrants.

Correcto-mondo. A good article in American Thinker today addresses this. The Constitution does not give us those rights, it protects those rights.

Based on the ones I've known, I think there's sort of a 90/10 thing going on. 10% do jobs that if the government hadn't displaced private actors, those jobs would get done anyway. And some of those people are besieged by more-shit-to-do-all-the-time, and some don't get paid vastly more than their free-market equivalents would. Meanwhile, the other 90% do very little, what little they do is hugely destructive, and they get paid yo.

Because the word "liberal" has a positive connotation in the classical sense (liberty). While it is true the left has perverted its meaning, at the same time the left has brainwashed generations via public education to think that what they call "liberalism" has that same positive connotation. The left is also doing a pretty thorough job thus far of making people see "socialism" in a positive light as well. OTOH, "Marxism" still carries a negative connotation and since that really is the left's endgame, call it for what it is -- it might wake some of the sheep up.
One of the biggest mistakes of those on the right, IMO, is their constant reference to the left as "liberals" and their agenda as "liberalism."

Soona, just read the piece at the AT. That is exactly correct. I fall into the trap from time to time to. When some lefty says why should you be able to own a firearm, I will lazily say because it is my 2nd A right. And that is simply not true. The correct response is because it is my God-given right as a man, and the 2nd A ensures that such right cannot be infringed.
My understanding is that Hamilton was also against the BOR for the same reasons. It was unnecessary because Congress didn't have the powers to take away such rights under Article II.
Anyway, we conservatives should be clear when we speak.

Yeah, I know.
I was commenting on the irony, something that you apparently should pick up at the hardware store FFS.

I'm off to the hardware now. If they have any 20-minute videos of fully-clothed Japanese schoolgirl imitators mouthing pop tune lyrics, I'll bring it back for you. For the ironic content. The smart, smart military ironic content.

Marx and (more pragmatically) Lenin and (most pragmatically) Stalin were arrogating to themselves the right to define ability and needs. "Democratic Centralism" - google this.
Leaving Republicans aside (they're Marxist too, in their Menshevik way; we are all Marxist now), the conservative answer to abilities and needs is that this is decided by family, friends, the market, and the local government; and by the centralised State as a last resort.

I just passed it on to a boatload of people, and I hope a bunch of you do the same. Mamet has some cachet as a former liberal playwright; Pulitzers, Tonys, H'wood movies, the whole nine yards -- some of your acquaintance will listen to Mamet when they would rather eat a bug than listen to Mark Levin.
BTW, if you haven't read his "coming out as a patriot" essay, find "Why I'm No Longer a Brain-Dead Liberal." THAT one made heads explode from Coast to Coast. ;-)
