110 Danica is impressive. She does get a weight advantage. But so do drivers like Mart Martin. Any driver under 140 does. Nascar should do a better job of equalizing driver weight. Otherwise it creates a jockey situation where drivers are rewarded for being tiny. Tiny drivers are bad for Nascar. Drivers are penalized for being normal, let alone big and strong. Nascar equalizes it to a certain degree. But the weight they force them to add back doesn't really equalize. And they are allowed to put the weight lower than a driver. Lower center of gravity helps.

I wouldn't go that far. There's 42 other drivers in the field today. I think half of them would kill to be able to say that they led a lap of the 500.

My ideal finish: She and Gordon wreck on the last lap leading to a fist fight while Junior takes the victory lap.

At first a lot of the food inflation was hidden from low-info shoppers by shrinking volumes. They've pretty much gone as far as they can with that ploy. When you start fitting a "pound" of coffee into a ring box, even the idiots take notice.
So now they have to start jacking up the face prices.

Damn right.  The box of girl scout cookies was definitely smaller than last year.  I was so upset, I even mentioned it to the girl selling me them.  She told me to "suck it up", and I was so angry I told her to get dressed and get out of my van.

126 And as unfortunate as yesterday's wreck was -- rookie Kyle Larson perversely benefits by getting his name all over the news (it was Larson's car that went into the fence and injured the fans.) Larson might have the most raw racing talent since Kyle Busch came up. Larson has Stewart and Gordon level of skill - and came up in a similar open wheel short track manner. Larson's shown an ability to drive almost any kind of car and win. Darrel Wallace Jr is the big diversity driver Nascar wants to push since he's black (half-black). But Larson (who's half-white, half-Japanese) is the true racing wunderkind.

136 Nascar should do a better job of equalizing driver weight.

Posted by: lincolntf at February 24, 2013 11:24 AM (ZshNr)

153 Hey Accuracy, you're wrong. NASCAR bases its cars on a 180-pound driver. If the driver is 180 pounds or more, the car must weigh 3,300. A driver who weighs 170-179 pounds must add 10 pounds to the car, while a driver 160-169 pounds must add 20, a driver 150-159 pounds must add 30 and any driver under 150 pounds must add 40. Patrick, whose weight is estimated between 100 and 110 pounds, therefore drives a car at least 30 pounds lighter than most of the other drivers. Mark Martin, the lightest male driver, weighs around 130 pounds.

Posted by: lincolntf at February 24, 2013 02:48 PM (ZshNr) The last segment (fingertip) isn't sitting at a weird angle, is it (bent toward your palm)? If so, you may have broken the bone at the point of attachment for the tendon. Did this to both my pinkies: once in my teens and again in my 40s. If this is the case, see an orthopedic surgeon this week. The sooner steps are taken to repair this, the better. I wound up having the last joint on both fingers fused because the attempts to reattach the tendon failed. A minor inconvenience, though, because they were, after all, pinkies.

Do you actually watch any NASCAR races? There have been a few women involved (usually off and on in the nationwide series) for decades. There's one black dude out of 36 drivers in the truck series. There's a couple hispanics as well. All of those people made a name for themselves in other series first. Juan Pablo Montoya is the only one of them to have won in NASCAR, and he had to earn it just like anyone else.

They have like one commercial aimed at 'minorities' showcasing some of those drivers, but that's about expanding the audience and making money more than anything else.

199 Danica is impressive. Short term she brings interest and media attention. Long term I think she's actually bad for the sport. She certainly didn't help IndyCar. She left IndyCar worse off than when she joined. Counter-argument to that is IndyCar didn't benefit because she mainly used it to jump to the better paying Nascar. There's no place higher for her to go. She won't be jumping to F1. Driver spots in Nascar have never been awarded purely on driver skill. Lots of nepotism involved (Dale Jr) or driver who brings his own money (Paul Menard). There is a minimum skill level of course. But if you have a marketable personality you can last for years in the mid-pack like Michael Waltrip does or Kyle Petty did. Darrel Wallace Jr -- the great black hope of Nascar -- only has a Truck series ride. Seems like a good kid with significant success at the youth level. Racing is incredibly expensive, even at the youth level. You need to be rich and/or marketable. Nothing wrong with using what makes you stand apart from the thousands of other drivers trying to get a spot -- even if that is your gender or race. Other drivers use their famous family name or family money. Nobody thinks Dale Jr has the raw racing skill of Gordon, Stewart, or Busch. But he's still a quality driver. If he hadn't of been who he is it's extremely unlikely he'd have a spot with Hendrick -- the top team in the industry with the best cars, best engines and best engineers. But that's life in a sport dependent on advertising and consumer brand sponsors.

211 Best thing to happen for people sick of Danica is for her to win today. An orgy of attention would follow, but ten fizzleot. It's NASCAR, the MSM will never fully approve. Worst thing would be if she comes in second. Then it'll be Danica's Hunt For Daytona for the next twenty years.

213 F1 pays the most by far. Nascar #2. IndyCar is way, way below Nascar. Danica was able to get some good endorsement money of course during IndyCar. It's sad how far IndyCar has fallen. Outside of the Indy500 fan interest is just dead. There should be money in being the elite open wheel series in America. But there isn't. Nascar careers are longer. F1 careers are shorter and drivers age out quicker. It's rare a driver's reflexes hold up past their early 30s. Nascar drivers can compete into their 40s. Jeff Gordon is 41 I think and still consistent top 10. Juan Pablo Montoya is a good example. He was let go by F1 as he got into his 30s. Wasn't good enough anymore. Now he makes a good living being a top 20 driver in Nascar. Montoya clearly has/had elite racing skill. He won in F1, he's won in Nascar. If he was in a top team I think he could be top 10 in Nascar. I think he's happy being the Latin face of Nascar -- Nascar really wishes he spoke Spanish though and not Portuguese (Montoya is Brazilian).

216 Daytona and Talladega are more about the car ... and luck. With pack racing there's no way to avoid the big crashes, it's just random luck whether you get caught up or not. And the driving is pretty much full throttle the whole way. The smaller tracks are were driver skill is more determinative of the outcome.

Posted by: Flatbush Joe at February 24, 2013 12:09 PM (ZPrif)

217 216 --- Juan Pablo Montoya is Brazilian? I would never have guessed. The "Montoya" part is no big deal because there are quite a few Brazilians with Spanish surnames, but the "Juan Pablo" is bizarre. (It would be "Joao Paulo" in Portuguese.) I guess it's just a goofy thing like "Juan Williams."

I think part of that might be because of his massive problems of keeping a car on the track.  I also don't really watch nationwide so does he try racing there or is he of the "I'm good enough to be in the Sprint Cup so that's where I'm only racing" mentality?

Yeah she definitely has talent.  She's at least an average driver to above average.  Which is like a lot of the other drivers she's competing against.  A lot of the wrecks she's involved in haven't really been her fault and more of a matter of her getting caught up in them.  Now if she were a great driver I think she'd be able to have avoided being hit in those incidents.

And she could embarrass herself if every week her post race interview consists of "I didn't get any help out there."  Also she could have been smiling about finishing 8th in the Daytona 500.

288 Danica Patrick has an interesting record. Her success in motorsports speaks for itself, she is a decent driver and does OK. She brings enormous publicity and viewership to NASCAR, a sport with some serious popularity problems, so the other drivers should be very grateful to her.

GoDaddy is a run of the mill ISP, a true commodity product. The original owner has some great advice. But, Danica was able to push them to an enormous market share. Sex does sell.

Danica does a lot for fans and a lot for charity. She seems happy with her new boyfriend, and I wish her well. If she is a little aggressive and crazy, that seems to be part of the sport.

292 I have a friend who tried to become a NASCAR driver; he got as far as the NASCAR training school. What he discovered is that the vast majority of humanity can't drive a car at NASCAR speeds. Most people, when they reach 180 miles per hour, start getting tunnel vision because their brains can't process information quickly enough. That happened to my friend, and that was the end of his racing career.

In other words Danica is one of the very few people in the world who can drive a car at NASCAR speeds; pretty much everyone who can drive big league racing cars is doing so. To call her a mediocre driver is simply absurd - like calling an NFL player a mediocre football player. If any of us attempted to race Danica Patrick - she'd make us look like complete fools.
