Deaf Child Hears Father's Voice For First Time

Apart from the kid's first pop-eyed look when he hears the voice, I suppose the takeaway is that the kid's attitude on sound is right: He understands how amazing it is, because it's new to him. It should be amazing to all of us (as should a hundred other things), but we've lost his capacity for amazement.

The younger sister of a good friend of mine was deaf due to her mother having German measles in her first trimester. The cochlear nerves never developed and she was over 99% deaf. She learned lip-reading from age two, was mainstreamed into public education after attending a wonderful school for the deaf, went to college, married a man, and had two children, who became aware of their mother's needs as toddlers. When she cared for them as infants she had an alarm that would turn on a light if they cried. She is an amazing woman, who never let this stop her. She never used sign language. She speaks well, but sounds like a redneck Scandinavian as she is from Mississippi...with accents on different words.

I thank God for the advancement being made for these people who have never heard a bird sing much less their children's voices or laughter.

Was surfing the morning news, and the kid was on CNN with his parents. Was going wild on the set, grabbing cameras, etc. Parents just sat and watched as the crew did their best to protect the child, and their equipment.
