Deal? Maybe. Maybe Not.
— Ace

Via Hot Air, Reuters reports a possible deal to fund the government until February 15th, permitting negotiations on budgetary matters.

Actually Reuters says "mid January" and then "February 15th," in the same article. Early next year, let's call it.

The tentative framework, which is not finalized and could change, would also set up a new round of deficit-reduction negotiations that would try to strike a bargain by year's end.

At Hot Air (first link), Guy Benson says Democrats will refuse to entertain it, and of course Democrats are needed to pass anything in the Senate.

I'm curious what the media would do if it is clearer than ever it's the Democrats continuing the shutdown.

Tell a lie, I'm not curious at all. I know exactly what they'll do.

10 From WaPo: ---- The outline of the emerging Senate deal is this: The government is funded until Jan. 15. The debt ceiling is lifted until Feb. 7. There are a handful of small Affordable Care Act changes: Stronger income verification, which Republicans want, and a one-year delay on the reinsurance tax, which Democrats want. Oh, and there's a bicameral budget committee that needs to report back by Dec. 13. The timing of all this is designed to create a fight about sequestration. The Jan. 15 deadline means funding for the federal government runs out at the exact moment sequestration's deeper cuts kick in. The Dec. 13 deadline means that the full House and Senate would have time to consider any package of recommendations the bicameral committee comes up with, if the committee actually manages to come up with anything. The deal isn't official yet. It hasn't passed the Senate yet. And it certainly hasn't passed the House yet. But if it does clear those hurdles -- and, again, that's a big if -- it'll mean Republicans and Democrats have agreed to take what began as a fight over the Affordable Care Act and make it into a fight over sequestration. That's what the Democrats want. It's also what some Republicans, including Rep. Paul Ryan and Grover Norquist want. But it's not been what the Ted Cruz wing of the Republican Party wants. The question now is how much pull they really have. This, from Robert Costa, suggests the answer might be "less than they did a few weeks ago":

The GOP have been horribly unclear in their messaging from the get-go.

I attempted an Olympic caliber quadruple facepalm (involving the soles of both feet in addition to both hands) over this gem from Marlin Stutzman, R-IN:

"We're not going to be disrespected. We have to get something out of this. And I donÂ’t know what that even is."

He doesn't even know what the fuck he wants out of the showdown? Brilliant. Absolutely brilliant. What I instantly heard in my head was this:

"I'm smart. Not like people say. I'm smart and I want respect!"

Protip: when your message is so confused and dumb that people instantly think of Fredo being taken out to be shot, you better not even air that message.

The thing about poker is that a) you have to have a hand a b) you have to be willing to play your hand. Republicans don't want to stop ObamaCare. Republicans don't want to stop the spending. Republicans don't want to stand for anything. So why exactly should Democrats give one inch? If I'm Democrats, I'm telling Republicans I want a blow job at the end of the process or no deal.

100 21 The biggest problem we have is the media. How do we fix that? If people can get accurate information we win. But how to do it? Posted by: petunia at October 14, 2013 05:43 PM (DAcBA) In small steps. First we constantly denounce the media as propaganda agents. Second we look to patronize alternative sources. Third we attack them with lawfare in any way we can. Fourth, we absolutely refuse to grant them respect or access. And so forth. We have to try everything of which we can think. But whatever we do, we have to take away the ability of Liberal Democrats in control of Microphones, to hurt us. They are the greatest threat we face.

143 Deroy Murdock has a pretty good, plenty angry post on NRO about how the Democrats are the ones that should be blamed for no deal going forward.  He outlines how Reid shot down Sen. Collins ultra-moderate offer:

"CollinsÂ’ plan could not have been milder:

- Re-open the federal government immediately
- Increase the national-debt ceiling until January 31, 2014
- Fund the federal government for six months
- Delay ObamaCareÂ’s medical-device tax for two years
- Verify that those who want Obamacare subsidies qualify for them.
- Let agencies prioritize spending, so long as they obey budget-sequester limits
....
CollinsÂ’ pitch offered plenty to please Obama and Democrats.
...
...a majority of Democrats would rather keep Washington in limbo than spare jobs from the medical-device tax or prevent fraud in Obamacare."

The "deal":

- The Rats give up their 11th-hour demand to spend more, introduced only after Paulo Ryan floated the idea of killing the sequester in exchange for an unrelated "negotiation" last week, for a mere 3 1/2 months.

- El PRL give up absolutely, positively EVERYTHING related to PlaceboCare, from defund to delay, from giving up their personal exemptions to getting back into K Street's good graces by eliminating the medical device tax (itself an exchange for fucking over the pensioners that make up a large group of the one set of GOP loyalists, the seniors, they hadn't fucked over the last 12 months) forever.
