Death Spiral Watch: Early Kentucky Enrollment Figures Show Young People Signing Up at Half the Rate Needed to Sustain Obamacare
— Ace

Obama's looking for 38% of Obamacare enrollees to be young -- he wants to tax-farm these young invincibles who, thanks to Obamacare, will be paying much, much more into the system than they take out.

Actual percentage of young enrollees so far in Kentucky: N-n-n-nineteen percent.

Obama and Sebelius have, get this, refused to disclose the demographic breakdown for federal system's enrollees.

So our best guess is to look to states which do not, get this, suppress all information and lie about the rest. And Kentucky's figures, at least so far, show that the young people so crucial to Obamacare are just not interested in subsidizing older people.

And In "Success Story" Connecticut... Only twenty-four percent of enrollees are the young people who can be so bountifully tax-farmed.

According to ConnecticutÂ’s latest enrollment data, 10 percent of total enrollees since Oct. 1 are between the ages of 18 and 25, 12 percent between 26 and 34 and 12 percent between 35 and 44.

Given that these are "young" people, what are the chances that they are actually purchasing full-price policies?

The other thing about young people - they tend to be on the low end of the salary scale; chances are most of the young people who sign up will either qualify to be on Medicaid, or will be getting some pretty hefty subsidies themselves.

The people they REALLY need to sign up for Obamacare are the WEALTHY ones.

5 Color me surprised. Twenty-somethings are busy having fun, going to school, and trying to find a paying job rather than focusing on future, potential healthcare problems. My daughter was a rare exception who understood the importance of health insurance early on, due to my own health problems neurosis. Most of her friends never gave it a second thought.

Half the rate needed? That many?

You can make a good case that there aren't enough enrollees yet (like the ZERO in Oregon) to draw any conclusions on participation by age or other demographics. The sample is so small the data is meaningless.

Can they back out? Is it a monthly charge, or annual?

Better health idea than the Affordable Care Act:

New Harvard research provides the strongest evidence to date that eating nuts can reduce a personÂ’s risk of dying from cancer, heart disease, and a number of other causes...Nut eaters were 25 percent less likely to die from heart disease, 10 percent less likely to die from cancer, and 20 percent less likely to die from diabetes as well as lung diseases.

The number enrolled between the ages of 35-64 is 6,336. That means 19 percent of enrollees in Kentucky--where website issues have not significant hindered signing up--are of the coveted "young invincibles." oh, I see, now. now I can lol

47 So another thought about the unpredictedly high Medicaid enrollments:

I observed previously that people who have longstanding serious chronic conditions have a massive incentive to do things like understate their income when applying, to get shoved onto Medicaid.

Because Medicaid will get them seen at top-tier hospitals, whereas the various subsidized exchange insurance plans stick them in an HMO style restricted network with fewer choices.

But even that can't alone explain why the Medicaid numbers are so huge.

Here's a further possible explanation. The Earned Income Tax Credit.

It's been obvious for years that people have been fantastically gaming the system for the EITC by doing things like inventing bogus underage dependents in the house. There is a huge amount of fraud in the system and there is next to no actual verification of these claimants' submissions. Easy money.

Well, when the Medicaid eligibility algorithm runs, it looks at a bunch of factors. Including whether or not you have any underage dependents in the house, fictional or real.

So, people's bullshitting of the system to get undeserved EITC cash is coming back to bite Obamacare in the ass, by artificially and hugely increasing the number of people who supposedly "qualify" for Medicaid.

Note that this is also going to make the budget balloon to the bursting point. None of Obamacare's fiscal architects appear to have anticipated this problem.

Posted by: torquewrench at November 20, 2013 04:43 PM (gqT4g)

48 "Chances are most of the young people who sign up will either qualify to be on Medicaid, or will be getting some pretty hefty subsidies themselves." This! Guarantee you that most of the young enrollees are stereotypical deadbeat baby daddy thugs and professional welfare sucking single moms. You know the same people currently bankrupting the medicare system with ER bills forwarded directly to taxpayers.

Posted by: BlueFalcon in Boston at November 20, 2013 04:43 PM (KCvsd)

49 How many of these youngsters are qualifying for Medicaid or getting full subsidies? I'll bet that very few are paying the full ticket, which is what they'd have to do to help balance the books. My daughter is a real goody-goody and super-responsible but she will NOT buy this crap. I can't believe that many young people will.

I’m just adding one more reason why this has to be repealed! I turned of Howie Carr today. I was listening on the radio instead of online and couldn’t stand the noise. I had to go out for a while and see that goldilocks posted that Brown called into Howie’s show today. The rumor is he’s going to run for NH senate. If so, he had better learn to be conservative.

145 Am I wrong in thinking everyone thinks its a good thing that O'Care has failed so far?

I think it's terrible. Now they'll have the excuse to create something even worse. or make unconstitutional power grabs and the GOP will most likely go along with it.

The ACA (or it's like) is (for politicians) a  good thing. It creates a class of people that owe their continued existence to government. That's a win for the DC crowd.

Why isn't the GOP pushing repeal? Instead of some hacked piece of garbage that will cost more money and save Obama's bacon.

Because they WANT something like the ACA. It's where they were headed (can you say Romney Care?). They just wanted it to be rigged towards THEIR donor class of businesses and others.

And if by some miracle or creative lie (and of course the Media will go along with it) O'Care is saved, the GOP won't get any credit and Obama will not be a lame duck for his final years.

Remember Clinton and "The Comeback Kid". I do. He lied, got impeached and got off and this was touted as a victory for the rest of his term. Sure he lost (or gave up I forget) his law license and some other stuff but so what? He kept his veneer of "Slick" and we see the results of that now.

179 I keep hearing the fear the Dems will throw up arms, cry "Lordy..Lordy," and, start clamoring for single payer after all of this. How? Medicare is not equipped or funded to handle 300 million Americans at the drop of a hat. Years and years and billions and billions away. No? A fresh from the ground up single-payer administration? Again, I read estimates of 5-6 years for such a organization to be built again needing billions and billions on new money to do it. Who, after this and including Dems, thinks this clown college of an Administration could pull that off? Hell, they had three years to put together one website and they might as well have been building a new moon shot. Even if the Dems could pass such a bill (which they can't) it would not result in an instant insurance organization ready to start operation immediately. So, if they were to pull a stunt like that we would still be years and years away from anything remotely functioning. What of the newly uninsured out there right now? The Admin says "You just hold tight, don't get sick, and, 5 or 6 years we'll be ready to help you. Thank me." ????????

I've been saying for some time that this is like they did the Apollo 11 moon shot straight from Werner von Braun's sketches, without Mercury, Gemini, and the other Apollo missions in between.

184 It's 38% plus a minimum of 2.7 million, because they also have to cover the new Medicaid enrollees for the first three years.

How those states that are "taking advantage" of expanding Medicaid plan to pay for all the new freeloaders in Year Four and beyond is a question I have seen NO ONE address.

No matter how you look at it, this thing is a complete disaster.  An unworkable concept, designed to fail, implemented by incompetents and defended only by liars.

Just saw Oprah clip...they just have to die!

I hope this gets widespread coverage.  Of course it won't but it deserves it.  She's just a nasty, ignorant POS.  Not because she's black, just because she's a nasty, ignorant RACIST POS.

Yeah, racist America made you a billionaire and you want to piss on your country.  FU

186 We don't know if an "enrollee" is simply getting on Medicaid or not. These young enrollees might not be paying a fucking thing, but taking OUT.

187 Nothing against Kentucky people but I used to drive through the state and I believe 19% of their cars are broke down on the side of the freeway.

189 Tiberius Caesar had this tax farming business figured out. "I want my sheep sheared, not shaved." You don't take everything you can. You leave the sheep enough wool on their backs to survive the winter, and your subjects enough money to get on with their lives and raise kids for future emperors to tax. Modern liberals are bad shepherds. Obamacare is ripping off the young so badly only the ones as stupid as the keggers in the ads are signing up.

190 Re: Posted by: Ricardo Kill at November 20, 2013 09:43 PM (bI3Ji) You're right. They can't do it. It's a bluff.

191 Another point in support of Ricardo Kill: the way they got Obamcare through was to build a coalition, including the insurance companies that are getting burned now. Who wants to be in the next coalition?

192 Here's some math: If you doubled the number of youngsters in KY on the Exchange, without adding any old folks, that wouldn't get you to 38%. You would need roughly 2.6 x as many youngsters as they have now to get to 38% (81/130=62%). IOW, they're screwed. :-)

You all are looking at the numbers wrong......remember we are in Obama government time.

When they say 19% of the people enrolled are under 34, what it actually means is that of all the people who have enrolled, many of them have children that they signed up that are now counted as people in Kentucky who have enrolled.

Did they say that they have 6000+ new individual POLICIES, or 6000+ enrollees?

Maybe they only have 3000 new policies, but many of those policies cover a spouse or a spouse and children.

196 There is no "death spiral" for obamacare.  It will end up as just one more giant welfare program suck on the federal and state budgets.  The only death spiral is the slow fiscal one for the country at large.
