Debt Ceiling/Shutdown Deal In The Works
— DrewM

No real details yet but House GOP members met with Obama last night and Senate Republicans are there now.

The very sketchy outlines...

In addition to ending the shutdown and increasing the debt limit, the proposal includes an easing of the across-the-board spending cuts that began taking effect a year ago, and replacing them with curbs in benefit programs that Obama himself has backed.

Among them is a plan to raise the cost of Medicare for better-off beneficiaries.

The idea of the shutdown was to take on an unpopular program in ObamaCare and the deal on the table is cuts in a popular program aimed at mostly GOP voters (wealthier Medicare recipients).

Anyone want to bet the new cuts won't offset the givebacks in sequestration and cover the costs of the new debt increase?

That's your GOP everyone.

We went into a lot of the horrors facing the country thanks to ObamaCare in the podcast (which will be up later today). One point I didn't get to make is, for all these terrible things the GOP can't get traction in fighting them. That's the real problem.

49 I think this is a GOP-released story. How can I tell? "and replacing them with curbs in benefit programs that Obama himself has backed." They're setting him up for hypocrisy. I don't think he goes for it, which is why this was leaked. I've been wrong before, of course, but I think this is an attempt to shame him into a deal. And, to be honest, GOPers have long supported means testing for the entitlement programs. Dems don't like it because it makes the entitlement programs look even more like welfare. It also means fewer future oldsters are hooked on them. Like me. I say cancel Social Security. Give everybody a check for what they "paid in" and end the damned thing. I'm not going to see any, means-testing or no.

50 "for all these terrible things the GOP can't get traction in fighting them. That's the real problem." Yes - the Repub. estab. are a bunch of corrupt weanies. But they always have been and always will be. They're politicians, after all. The problem remains that the vast majority of people believe CNN, ABC, CBS and NBC. Without the destruction of those entities, we have no chance. Yet I'm willing to bet that the vast majority of you watch NBC, CBS and ABC sports programming religiously. Baseball playoffs, NFL, etc. Most of you financially support the main force of destruction of our way of life. So - when you're bitching about how the Repugs are such pussies - take a long look in the mirror.

(2) Health care is too expensive. (1) is the liberal issue but the people were sold on alleviating (2). Well, that's out the window. For most people, certainly the upper middle class crowd who were enamored with pant creases, they've got real problems. So...if moving to more government is making things worse, the logical reaction is to move against more government. Then again, those who voted for Obama don't do a lot of logical thinking.

Posted by: mugiwara at October 11, 2013 09:08 AM (gGyxZ)

181 Republicans were put in the House to stop Obamacare.  Instead they chose to fund it when no one could make them do so if they did not wish to do so.

That is all you need to know about how futile it is to support the Republican party.  Their negotiating position should have been "Obamacare is dead and we like the fact the government is shutdown.  We like less spending and we have less spending.  Heck, if cutting 17% of the budget is this painless we can cut a lot more.  Things are pretty much optimum in our eyes and nothing can change it until the next round of elections.  So what was it you were wanting to discuss?"

In my eyes, the GOP owns Obamacare now just as much as the president does.  There is absolutely zero incentive to vote for them when they will not behave properly once they are in office.  None.

Let the burning begin and may the devil take the hindmost.

Posted by: Thatch at October 11, 2013 09:08 AM (qYvEa)

182 Going on experience here.  The libtards think that the government has a lot of money. Given that old guard Republicans were going to simply give the president a clean CR and a debt limit increase without a fight (on to the next hill boys - we'll make our stand there!), anything we get here (it may not be much) is gravy and should be credited to the New Right.

Also, we all knew the defunding/delaying Obamacare was a long shot.  Thanks to Ted Cruz and Mike Lee, though, even LIVs know that the Republicans fought like hell against the law.   That will begin to pay dividends as the implementation trainwreck continues, as wealthier supporters of the law begin to buy the artificially expensive Ocare policies and as the young people begin to incur the tax penalty for not purchasing Ocare coverage.  The media cannot hide the increased costs and penalties from the lucky recipients.

255 In other words, "Charlie Brown's vote is contingent on Lucy promising not to pull away the football again." Once more, just like yesterday- a debt limit bill IS NOT the same thing as a Continuing Resolution. We weren't going to stop the debt limit from increasing anyway- if we get negotiations out it, that's actually a net benefit. Now, of course, the crux is what happens in those negotiations, but a debt limit bill does not (itself) end the "Shutdown." I can even see a similar 6 week CR, "Okay, we'll put everyone back to work. For Now. But you don't play nice, and we'll shut it all down again." Now, while I'm considering things the GOP isn't going to deliver on, I think I'll also contemplate how I'm going to spend my lottery winnings that I totally won't get.

Winning elections? You mean national elections, presidential elections? The Democrats cheat. They also lie. Did I mention they cheat?

And then there's that little proviso in Obamacare itself, the one that says the AHA can't be killed by Congress without a supermajority (2/3) vote. The Supreme Court could've killed the AHA on the unconsitutionality of that little nugget alone, but Justice Roberts was determined not to deviate from the conditions set forth by the electonrically distorted voice on Roberts' home telephone telling Roberts that he knew about that night in Vegas with the midget and the Thai ladyboy and would he like to see the video for old times' sake? A little grainy because the lighting was bad but hey, check it out.

End result is even higher overall spending, but more skewed to Democrat voters.

A "clean" debt limit bill was always going to happen.  If we can even get Obama or Reid on record saying they will commit to negotiations in exchange for the debt limit, that is a small win.  There will always be debt limit increases until significant budget reform happens, and that will require (at least) Republican majorities in both House and Senate along with fiscal conservative president, and the conservatives holding the whip hand in the GOP.

366 213 You really think the democrats are going to agree to follow the Budget Act of 1974?

The Senate actually passed a budget this year (50-49) but a budget conference committee has not been convened primarily due to the fact that the Senate Democrats refused to agree to the framework outlined by the House Republicans. Historically, the debt ceiling is a good vehicle to force both sides to come to the table. Whether that happens in this case depends on whether the Democrats feel it is better to continue being obstructionists or pass a deal.

I felt the need to do this because we of the classic liberty side can in fact gain no traction in the public sphere, so I felt the need to speak out, but in a manner leaving room for the other side to back down. I have just paid a price for that private outspokeness, for the local institution took the cheapest shot available, but I am still here, proud I made a stand. Some chicken. Some neck. And as far as the GOP--good people suffer because they cannot do the job. I have no answers for them, which makes us even, for they don't either.

This has been my opinion for a while.  They want Obamacare, let them have it.  Implementing it is the only thing that might, just might convince them it's a bad idea. I say 'might' because the Obamatons are so invested in their guy most of them can't even acknowledge how this policy is already hurting them.  I think all the delay/defund/obstruct tactics are just giving them an excuse to use when it fails.  What's the point of having any shutdown if you are just going to cave in the end, anyway?

I say this to my liberal friends all the time, but libertarians & conservatives need to get a clue, too: NOBODY currently serving in federal office is on your side.  Every last one of them is working toward their own best interest, not yours.

Unlike anything we have done, it is cratering and becoming more unpopular by the day. It will hurt the Dems more than anything we can do. I have pointed out over and over and over again that there is no way to defund Obamacare short of repealing the law. The Obamacare statute funds Obamacare just like SS or Medicare. It is an entitlement that does not go through the appropriations process and there was never any chance Obama or Reid was going to give in now. Better to point out the abject failure of this law, let people feel the pain and lies and run on it in 2104. We need control of DC to get rid of this thing and implement our policies. When you are in the minority all you can do is chip away not make fundamental changes. Bring on Obamacare and the pain. That is the only way to get around the msm and all the other noise and let people realize this for themselves.

Can we as conservatives though at least focus first on the more unpopular government programs first?  Social Security is the most popular and beloved government program ever.

I'm far more concerned with "Great Society" poverty programs that destroy our national character over a WWII vet getting a small check from a pension he's contributed to his entire life.

Until we've reformed food stamps, welfare, government housing, MediCaid, etc. than we can look at tinkering with SS and MediCare.

Much water has travelled under the bridge but those of us that spent our time and money still expect just that. Finally, a man with big clanking brass balls reminded the GOP of that and our current tizzy ensued. Those that decided not to keep their promises attacked him. End of story. 432 I'm going to be honest. At this very moment, if this is true: In addition to ending the shutdown and increasing the debt limit, the proposal includes an easing of the across-the-board spending cuts that began taking effect a year ago, and replacing them with curbs in benefit programs that Obama himself has backed. Among them is a plan to raise the cost of Medicare for better-off beneficiaries. Then I don't want the Republicans to win elections in 2016. Get on with the one party rule and lets feel the boot of the Bolshevik and lets get on from it from there.

Also known as the everyone-into-the-pool approach. Specifically legislatively repeal all of the special carve-out arrangements Obama has set up for Congress and cronies.

And, guess what? Those special carve-outs were wildly unpopular with the public. Rolling them back would have been a stroke of brilliance.

So, the GOP totally ignored that tack.

Because the Republicans in the House are worried that if their own staffs are subjected to the full terrifying power of Obamacare, without special relief, there will be an immediate "brain drain" of staffers leaving.

Tell me, do any of you perceive much by the way of brains among House GOP staff? I'm certainly not seeing that.

449 Come 2014 Republicans (especially reviled Tea Party Republicans) will be able to go to their donors and constituents and say "We tried.  We tried really hard, but we couldn't take everyone over a cliff for it."  And the ObamaCareNightMare will be in full force -- especially if they make every effort to make sure it is enforced strictly, fairly and with no funny business and favoritism form Democrats and Obama.  The pendulum will swing.

I think Ted Cruz's strategy might have been not one path to victory, but all paths leading to victory.

Can't get ObamaCare defunded today?  Then make sure you holler loudly for a one year delay -- the one thing Democrats could do to possibly save it from spontaneous combustion in the next few months -- and by hollering for for a delay, make them look as if they are capitulating if they try to delay it to save it.  In actuality, make it all but impossible for them to delay it, given Obama's personality disorder.

Can't get Obamacare delayed?  Then delay the individual mandate, which will bring on the collapse faster.

Can't get the individual mandate delayed? Then make sure that there are no more crony deals and sweetheart waivers coming from Obama and the Senate, and the ones they've already spread around are rolled back and/or pointed out to all and sundry who are not so graced.  Fairness.

Second, if the majority of your own party hates your guts, your lucky to break 15%

462 How do we win the culture war? I don't know. There's no guarantee we can win. We might just always be the hated minority from here on out. That would suck, of course. And any win in the culture will take decades. All you can do is take actions that help the process. Don't financially support the culture of the Left. Support media that support you. Reward your friends and punish your enemies. Advocate for your beliefs. Organize politically. The leftist slogan of -- "Early to bed, early to rise. Work like hell and organize." -- isn't a bad strategy for accomplishing long term cultural goals. The gay rights people worked for decades to change the culture and win. Many gay rights advocates no doubt spent decades pushing that and died seeming to achieve little success. There's no guarantee we are gonna win. At least one side in a political fight is always gonna lose. All you can do is take actions to increase your odds of winning, often only incrementally. If your position is a minority position, then odds are it will lose.

I think this is true and it's what is most disturbing.  I could let politics roll off my back in the past because I knew America had a certain sense of character regardless of the clowns in office, but I'm afraid Obama is very much representative of the "new" America, at least 51% of it.

Posted by: Dan at October 11, 2013 09:57 AM (m3gf3)

467 If true, the GOP's dismal poll numbers will continue their subterranean excavation unabated. A win on this would have been HUGE. It might even have given the generally conservative American electorate something to vote FOR in 2014 and 2016. Instead, we have another demonstration that they are NOT to be counted upon. Ever.

And so, we will have the clearest example to date as to why an unexciting, establishmentarian like Mitt Romney could not dislodge a baleful incumbent in a lackluster economy. There is simply no reason to cross the street for these guys. No reason to endure the reproach of coworkers, neighbors, and family trying to turn their shit into Shinola. Even skulking into a polling place to pull the lever for them is starting to take on that same seamy, need-a-shower feeling as ducking into a peep show.

There is only one way to win for any political party: pick a fight and win it. What we have in the GOP is the inverse. A party that so passive-aggressively loathes its base that it is compelled to pick fights and lose them. Or rather it let's the base pick fights -- even winnable fights -- and then undermines them. This is a psychological rather than a philosophical problem. It will not be fixed any time soon, either.

It's probably past time where the conservative and libertarian leaning electorate takes their votes elsewhere. This relationship is not... healthy.

The first step toward winning the culture war is  deciding to fight back.  The battlefields are academia and media. There are great sites out there like Campus Reform fighting the fight. Basically, it's not to make it cool to be counter-culture in this country. All we have to do is point out that WE are the counter-culture. The Left is the establishment.   Elections are won by shaping opinions and  the opinion-shaping machinery consists of news media entertainment media and academia. If we don't make inroads there, the century long win streak of the Left continues.

493 It ain't "in the works", Uncle Ace. There's 5 more days to go of Boehner and his minders shlepping over to the White House begging for "some more" only to emerge empty-bowled, again and again. Obama and Reid are humiliating the very shit out of Boehner and carving their initials into the hides of every GOPer stupid enough to come near them. This is about inflicting scars that show up right through November 2014.

494 ...for all these terrible things the GOP can't get traction in fighting them. That's what happens when a group isn't savvy enough to make sure that what is gained is of more value than what is to be traded away.

495 "not to mention those "flushable" wipes that don't really dissolve as promised.." Of course they won't dissolve. They sit in water in the box. If they dissolved in water they'd be useless. They contain plastic, I hear.

496 490 Quislings. Cute.

No, it's not the fact that I observed the True Cons and found them lacking. Nope. Not at all. It's because I've been brainwashed and/or I secretly want the bad guys to win.

And yet, you advocate what the mfm talking heads say the GOP *must* do to remain popular, even though the GOP as lost ground aggressively, on every front, and failed miserably, on every issue, since it started playing to the mfm's version of popular for the GOP.

And you refuse to recognize the only evident pattern of the GOP over the last few decades, which is to give in, give up, and go along with the destructionists of the DNC.

And, you advocate GOP politicians who stand for nothing other than winning elections, which they rarely manage to do enough to gain any real control, and even in those few times they have the numbers, refuse to address anything of substance in  any of the myriad of issues that are gutting this nation.

The standard issue, business as usual GOP are a significant part of why our country is coming apart at the seams.

"I have pointed out over and over and over again that there is no way to defund Obamacare short of repealing the law. "

If that were true, Harry Reid would have passed the House's defund CR with a voice vote and a laugh.
Since he outright refused to, I still believe a ban on the use of federal dollars for office space, personnel, supplies, communications, etc., would have seriously impeded federal operations related to Obamacare.

"Obviously it's time to form a 3rd Party so the TeaTards can be "pure" and the Democrat Party can rule unchallenged.

Makes sense to me.  It will hammer home Democrat responsibility for their bad policies.  It will deprive liberal Republicans of seniority.  It will cripple the Republican fundraising machine, because nobody pays big to losers.  And it does keep opponents of Democrat liberalism pure of the taint of collaboration.  It will come closer to giving the Right a clean slate than continuing to collaborate with liberal Republicans.

498 I have begun to think that the GOP has no interest in getting traction on any of these issues.  I think those in charge of the party now actually agree with most of Obama's big government ideas. I think they want to accumulate all that power with the belief it will be theirs at some point.

Sure they will pull the occasional stunt like the shutdown. They work up the base a little, put on a bit of a show and in the end give in.  There is simply no way that they can be consistently this feckless and incompetent. I think that some members like Ted Cruz do want to make a difference. But with the party still in the hands of people like McCain, Rubio etc. They are there simply to maintain the trajectory we are already on. They dont care that the government will collapse of its own weight in the future. The Dem's and old guard GOP will continue to give handouts to get elected while they bleed the system for all its worth. Assuming that the power and wealth they have accumulated will protect them when the whole fetid mess collapses around them.

I cant think of a single piece of legislation in the last 35 years that did not directly benefit those in DC. Either through buying votes for themselves. Using the information for insider trading (legal for congress members!). Or enriching them in some other way. That is why not only most legislation that actually makes sense will never see the light of day in congress. But that both the Dem's and GOP fight to destroy those outsiders like the Tea Party.
