— DrewM To defund and face a shutdown or not? That's the question facing Speaker John Boehner, Majority Leader Eric Cantor and the House GOP caucus now that the Senate has returned the Continuing Resolution, minus the ObamaCare defunding language.
House members in the conservative faction say they have about 80 votes to support their position [put the defund language back in and push the Senate into shutting down the government]. But there are 233 Republicans in the House. What about the other 153? It could be that most of them would like to see some sort of Obamacare measure attached to the new continuing resolution -- either the one-year delay/defund measure or one of the smaller proposals -- but they are more concerned about the possibility of a government shutdown. "I definitely don't want a clean CR," says a House conservative. "But you very well could have a majority of our conference who say, 'Look, let's just get the CR off the table.' There is a lot of fear of a shutdown. The further we try to push the leadership, if they don't think that's realistic, it makes them more likely to do a clean CR."
I'm in favor of a shut down to get the defunding language put back in (and contra Gabe, I think the language that was in the House CR does what ObamaCare opponents want it to do). If that isn't going to happen, it is imperative that the House not pass a clean CR. They have to get something out of this fight before moving on to the debt ceiling/delay fight. If they walk away with nothing from the last two weeks they have already lost the next fight. The GOP has to set a marker that these fights lead to Democratic concessions. Once you beat someone for the first time, you set a pattern and develop momentum.
Assuming we aren't going to get a shut down and a fight to the end from the GOP, what should we want? The Vitter Amendment. Senator David Vitter (R-LA) has an amendment that would force the Obama administration to follow the law and subject Congress, staffers and some members of the executive branch to be subject to the ObamaCare exchanges and pay for their own damn insurance. If the Senate and Obama want to shut down the government to protect their personal insurance programs, that's a fight every Republican and conservative should relish.
Other options are including the repeal of the medical device tax in ObamaCare. That would be disasterous. The idea isn't to make ObamaCare more palatable it's to make it more painful. Yes, the tax is destructive but removing it from the larger program removes a leverage point for the delay/repeal fights.
The big benefit of focusing on the Vitter amendment is that if there's just one demand, and it's one that makes Democrats look bad for opposing, then the politics of a shut down are clear and on the GOP's side. If Reid and the Democrats cave, then it will make life miserable for the people who imposed this horror on the nation.
Either way, it's a win. Not the win we really need but a win. Team Delay will have been forced to stand and fight on the CR and having drawn some blood will make it harder for them to cave on the plan they've been selling all along.

That's not a bad start. Next year when they are all up for reelection, we'll have 80 or more R's in the House worth fight for.
The rest? Let them twist in the wind with their buddies in the D Party.
We're not going to win any legislative battles for a while, and this whole fight was never about winning legislative battles. It was about figuring out who was willing to fight, and who was not (or more importantly, who in the R Party were going to fight against the conservatives in their party).
It's becoming clearer every day. That does not bode well for the squishes in the R Party, for whom opacity has become a way of life.

When the Democrats want to bone America up the ass the GOP leadership can be counted on to make their first counter offer as "Ok but use lube." So you know, ok you wanted to delay it for a year, because you thought that was the best option. Well why the hell did you make that the beginning selling point you were trying to push? Especially when you're dealing with the dishonest shits that are the democrats, and Obama constantly pulls the Darth Vader "I'm altering the deal," everytime you gutless pussies that are supposed to be our reps think they are close to getting something done.

let's pass a law that forces the Obama administration to obey the laws that congress passes.
Gun control in Chicago isn't working when gang bangers post pictures of themselves and their guns on facebook, and brag about 'drilling', so we need to pass national gun laws to end the cycle of violence in Chicago.
International arms trafficking has to stop, so the United Nations calls upon member nations to pass strict gun control laws to prevent arms smuggling across international borders.

Yes, but if Obamacare gets automatically defunded after 30 days, then the Dems are forced to come to the table, and plead for funding.
Of course, if they do not agree with the original 30 day funding in the CR, then theoretically they get blamed for shutting down the government.
Don't get me wrong, I'm all for shutting things down and letting it burn, I'm just trying to throw a bone to the Rs that are giant pussies.

Time and events produce the leaders for reform. The Tea Party pushed Cruz all the way to the Senate. Ted Cruz wasn't Perry's and the Texas establishment's choice, he was chosen by the working people of Texas' and endorsed by Sarah Palin.. The people of this country have reached their financial and moral limits, and, for the middle class, electing wealth collectors for the Ruling Elite is no longer an option for survival.

One of the best unkept secrets around here is that Charlie Dooley, the twice-elected St. Louis County Executive (chief political operator in county government, which is completely separate from St. Louis city) is fairly close to being a complete illiterate.
Seriously, everyone knows he's got an IQ somewhere in the mid 80s, but he's the head of government because... he never says anything! They never let him speak.
The man knows his limitations, I give him credit for that.
And I'm pretty sure he's destined for higher office. Such as... being Roy Blunt's opponent in '16.

And the democrats know that the Republicans are just going to keep on sending bills to the Senate so they can just wait until its time for the "CRISIS MUST BE RESOLVED" moment like now to get the Republicans in the House to cave. You sent 42 bills? What the fuck are you doing sending more. Tell them you've done you job and now its time for the Senate to do theirs, you'll be back when its time for reconciliation of the bills.

I agree with this. Either defund it or LET IT BURN. No delays. If we don't have the will to defund it that means the people aren't suffering enough, and they only way that will happen is to let people experience the pain. Let Obamacare create the economic consequences we all know that it will. And I don't get why the Republicans would want to delay it... wouldn't Obamacare pain HELP them in 2014???

An article in the sidebar highlights where we are right now.
Republicans (and conservatives) have no plan. Just like the idiots we laughed at during the Occupy Wall Street scam, when interviewed neither the leaders of the followers could say what it was that they wanted.
Using the paraphrase in the article, republicans never miss an opportunity to miss an opportunity. We stand immobile while democrats set up situations that make them look good to the unknowing masses while we look like uncaring monsters.
Why does this happen? A lot is attributable to the fact that on some topics, we are so wrapped up in the words that we never explore the ideas.
Right now, there is an opportunity to turn the entire healthcare thing around to the advantage of conservatives. However, in order to make it work in the real world, we would have to bargain away universal catastrophic government run single payer for market driven reforms in everyday care.
When looked at in the light of day, there are reasons to go with government single payer as opposed to government paid private insurance, which we're into now. However, try to have a conversation along those line and see how far you get.
Solutions are easy if that's what you're looking for.

George Zimmerman Update: Theft reported at Shellie Zimmerman's parents' home in Fla.
CBS) LAKE MARY, Fla. - Police say they were called to a home in Lake Mary, Fla. owned by George Zimmerman's in-laws on a report of a theft Thursday, reports CBS affiliate WKMG.
The station reports police received a call from Machelle Dean, George Zimmerman's mother-in-law, claiming hundreds of dollars in items were missing from a home she and her husband own and that the home was damaged.
"There was some damage to the house. Who committed that damage, I don't know. Was it there before hand, I don't know," Lake Mary police officer Zach Hudson said. "We're trying to figure out exactly what we have here."

this will help bring money into the govt and could lower the deficit , and if it doesn't go through the govt would have 100 billion more debt in ten years?
sure it would give the govt more money to play with. We know they could be trusted with more money and spend wisely, Right?
But what does this do to unconnected civilians growth or savings, retirements or attempts to raise themselves out of poverty into the middle class?
How does 29 hours actually help a private citizen, How does that help make those trying to better themselves better themselves? How does adding more taxes to those that are now working less if working at all encourage economy growth or climb out of poverty?

The House leadership seemingly recognizes that the conservatives had not coalesced Jan. last on a route sans Boehner. The Senate, however, has no clue that they will not only lose pivotal incumbencies but their opportunity to swing the Senate majority has evaporated.
There is no justifiable reason to place the onus on their public to suffer while they sit pretty.

MY hopeless, purely symbolic gesture is better than YOUR hopeless, purely symbolic gesture.
That said, backing the Vitter amendment (or something similar) is a good political move. Reid won't allow it, but pointing out that Obamacare lets politicians play under different rules than the rest of us is something that could resonate with the average voter.
Whether it's worth a pushing shutdown over, I'm on the fence.

Obama 2006 ; Mr. President, I rise today to talk about AmericaÂ’s debt problem . The fact that we are here today to debate raising AmericaÂ’s debt limit is a sign of leadership failure. It is a sign that the U.S. Government canÂ’t pay its own bills. It is a sign that we now depend on ongoing financial assistance from foreign countries to finance our GovernmentÂ’s reckless fiscal policies.
[...]
Increasing AmericaÂ’s debt
weakens us domestically and internationally. Leadership means that ‘‘the
buck stops here.Â’Â’ Instead, Washington is shifting the burden of bad
choices today onto the backs of our children and grandchildren. America
has a debt problem and a failure of leadership. Americans deserve
better. I therefore intend to oppose the effort to increase AmericaÂ’s debt limit

Yeah, that's the attractive part of it.
On the other hand, I'm less than confident that someone on our side won't fuck it up by adding some other provision that ends up providing the Dems with an excuse to block the amendment.

Iblis,
I read a lot of people here who seem to understand the inside baseball of politics a lot better than I do. I was only a congressional intern briefly and debated politics since childhood.
Nobody thinks that shotgun pellets strategy (I dub it) is a bad idea from what I've read.
So the question becomes "Why don't they do it?" Which was your question wasn't it?
The consensus is they only care about their cushy lives in DC, know they are crashing the ship of state on the rocks, and just want to have life preservers for themselves and their families.

So the House opts to side with Obama by delaying this disaster for a year until after the next round of elections, but at least held strong in demanding the Obamacare monstrosity will have even more unfunded costs. Did I get that right?

FFS,
repeal the device tax? While it is s stupid tax, repealing only make the law acceptable to LIVs at the expense of our budget. It needs to go only with the rest of the bill not before.

Here's another subject to think about...
In the wake of the mall attack in Kenya, you know damn well that something is going to happen here.
When it does, the idiots at Homeland Security and the assholes in office who think they have to "do something" will go way overboard, just as they did with air travel security. This will fuck up our economy and our basic freedoms and be an overall pain in the ass for decades.
So now, the question. What level of deaths are we willing to accept in terrorist mass shootings in U.S. malls without changing the way thing are now?
Personally, I'm ready to accept situations just as deadly as Kenya without going to the metal detector, pat down, take off your shoes shit before walking into a mall.

Does anyone else's employer provide a percentage of cost of coverage? That's want makes the FEHB so stupid IMHO, well one of many things.
it insulates the federal employees from this sticker shock which doesn't make the Vitter amdenment have as much teeth.

(1) The SCOAMT has thus far refused to delay the individual mandate for a reason.
The law’s champions have always considered the individual mandate to be the indispensable provision. It is what allows them to make the only boast they really care to make, which is that the law—in their estimation—will deliver on the long-sought goal of “universal coverage” (which now appears to mean covering all but 30 million people in our country). And it is what allows them to attempt to transform the purchase of government-sanctioned health insurance from just another consumer choice into a social obligation, if not a legal decree.
(2) Even the Democrats now largely oppose the medical device tax. It will lead to higher taxes, more job losses, lower research spending, and unnecessary deaths.

The reason why I feel delaying ObamaCare will not rescue ObamaCare is that ObamaCare is already failing despite the fact that they had several years to prepare for roll-out of the law. How is one more year going to save what they could not save in three and a half?
