Reported Commercial Airliner Crash at SFO
— Dave in Texas

SF emergency responder channel feed here via @bob_owens

KTVU reporting via PJ Tattler

An update from someone who says he was a passenger, the pic is up close. RT from @DanRiehl

We're into the newsgathering confusing eyewitness account bullshit stage at this point. Witnesses claiming both wings were torn off when they are still clearly attached after the fire.

It feels like they came in low, or short on the runway, damaged the tail, rolled to wherever while pieces got tore off the tail.. bags deployed and people got the fuck off. Then more fire.

But I don't know that. I don't know shit. I sure hope that.

DrewM sent me this pic of debris at the edge of the runway.

As of yet we don't know who was hurt or how badly. 290 adults and a baby on the manifest, plus the 12 crewmembers. I pray they are all ok.

UPDATE: KTVU reports two fatalities.

A plane crashed while landing at San Francisco International Airport Saturday morning after its tail came off while it was touching down on the runway.

According to a witness, around 11:20 a.m. the plane was just about to land — its landing gear had come down — when the tail of the plane came off.

After wobbling for a minute, the aircraft flipped upside down, coming to a stop on runway on itÂ’s back.
The plane, reportedly a Boeing 777, was coming from South Korea, according to flight tracking information.

10 tail came off and plane "landed" upside down & caught on fire? I hope everyone is OK... Not sure what is worse being unbuckled, or buckled.

36 Korean Peninsula is not a good locale in terms of corrosion.  Remember back in the 90's a KAL DC-10 that required 3x the man-hours to do its Heavy D-check than it required during assembly at Douglas Aircraft.  Looked like a piece of old lawn furniture.

Total pilot error. Actually pilot arrogance. He was a senior instructor pilot for KLM. Got pissed off at the tower for making him wait, despite virtually zero visibility and the controller screaming at him that a plane was landing in his direction.

77 @59 The other plane (PanAm 747) wasn't landing, it was taxiing up the same runway and had radioed that it was still on the runway, but the KLM plane didn't hear that because of a heterodyne. Even so, the KLM pilot tried to take off without clearance. The PanAm saw him coming and tried to turn off the runway.

122 42 Was that the 747 where the rear fuselage bulkhead dome failed and cracked open, ripping off the tail empennage?

Yeah, that's what I was thinking about as the pictures on Fox went around the plane. Looked to me like the bottom half of the aft end of the pressure vessel was missing. Shredded aft end bits on the runway have me wondering about a bomb in the cargo hold.

That Fox video of the debris on the runway.  Interesting.  It was still pressurized at landing judging by the long stream of debris that was blown out.  And notice how the remains of the vertical stabilizer and both horizontal stabilizers fell on the runway.  Get the feeling the aft bulkhead might have failed.  But this is all speculation.

Plane looks like it may have had a low approach and suffered a tail strike if it came down early on the runway approach just past the water which may also account for the collapsed landing gear.

You can see the remains of the tail structure right at the end of the runway in pieces. Shit doesn't 'fall off' without help, like a really hard jolt from a short landing that stripped the landing gear and the tail structure.

148 The JAL 747 aft pressure bulkhead failure blew about 80% of the vertical stabilizer off only leaving a stub.  What is left of this 777's vertical tail laying on the runway reminds me of that stub.

152

KTBU showed good video from end of runway to remaining fuselage.  Looks like the pilot was way low.  Keeping in mind that SFO is on reclaimed land, the tail struck the end of the runway.  Less of a drag and more of a slight ridge impact.  Stabilizers didn't make it to the nominal runway threshold.  Plane skidded to a stop about 2500 to 3000 feet down from the nominal threshold.

Looks like pilot error, or maybe this was the one case of a personal electronic device affecting the navigation convincing the pilot he had more altitude than he had.  If so, the pilot was flying instrument on a clear day.

Has their been any yakking about potential terrorism on FOX or elsewhere? I have read above comments about the odd break of tail section. I hope passengers jumped out of the back if they did not use chutes. So grateful it appears everyone got off. Wow.

Posted by: Soona at July 06, 2013 12:15 PM (8wnbz)

244

207...not all superstructure repair is because of a flawed design....

the pilots are rough on airframes, you sometimes have ramp incidents with support eqpt....

Bad policies are also rough on airframes...such as 'tankering fuel'.

Planes are designed to take off full of fuel, but landing without burning off that weight can put undue stress on the airframe.

When fuel prices are high...there is temptation to tanker fuel from home base rather than refuel at each stop.

I don't know that this would be a factor here, though, in this case, with the tail coming off.

Fuel tanks are in the wings, for the most part...so that's where the weight is.

Looks like the obvious just bit a few of the 'experts' commenting on Fox.

Plane came in to low on approach and scraped the landing gear and tail off the plane when it struck the very end of the runway.

I think you can safely say there's one pilot who's next flight will be as a passenger.

PS... it appears that the fire was caused by the engine after it ripped away and was small enough to allow the passengers to get away before it spread to the body of the aircraft.

283 If I do find out a cell phone was on and caused this I could be even worse to fly with and will start reporting buffoons who don't turn off their crap. I see it all the time.

I have been known to take over one flight with a psycho on board, as "I am a RN" is my signal to family "thar she blows!" I reported the passenger to the flight attendant as appearing to have had a psychotic break as she paced around the 757 after take-off on a long flight. The pilot, the crew, and the ground security people in Atlanta once relied on my vast authority, due to years of reading this blog, that the crazy woman could make it to our destination safely and we did not need to have an emergency landing in Atlanta and turn back (she was just off her gyroscope and not dangerous. I received a couple of free gin and tonics for babysitting her in the rear galley with flight attendants).

When I get on a plane do not mess with me, as I have stuff to do and that plane ain't turning around unless it is a mechanical issue. Do not go psycho and walk around throwing your beads and cups of water, as this is a pretty clear sign you are nuts and I will report you.

Left over from a long flight like this one? ...Probably not much more than 'reserves'.

Which is doing it right.

'Fuel tankering' does stress damage over time...and can finally take it's toll at times when there really isn't as much weight as that which did the gradual damage.

It can be a straw-that-broke-the-camel's-back sort of thing.

I've seen crinkles in the skin, under the wings, from landing with too much fuel.

303 OT but this is awesome

SAO PAULO (AP) — Police say enraged spectators invaded a football field, stoned the referee to death and quartered his body after he stabbed a player to death.

The Public Safety Department of the state of Maranhao says in a statement that it all started when referee Otavio da Silva expelled player Josenir Abreu from a game last weekend. The two got into a fist fight, then Silva took out a knife and stabbed Abreu, who died on his way to the hospital.

The statement issued this week says Abreu's friends and relatives immediately "rushed into the field, stoned the referee to death and quartered his body."

Local news media say the spectators also decapitated Silva and stuck his head on a stake in the middle of the field.

Police have arrested one suspect.

I wonder if people look at the pictures and since they only see debris beyond the water assume that that's where it starts. The thing is, there could be debris in the water.

Second, just because there's debris, it doesn't necessarily mean the fuselage was dragging (although that MIGHT be the case). It could just be that once it broke stuff streamed out.

Third, if some part of the tail broke, could that not have affected the altitude, and CAUSED the plane to be low? It seems like people are assuming that since it was low that that was the CAUSE, rather than the effect.

Fourth, where IS the tail section? You see the vertical and horizontal stabilizer parts, but what about the rest. Did everything but the fins disintegrate? How would that work?

311 CNN and MSNBC would be the LAST news source that I would go to for reporting. On another note, IF he drug the tail in and hit the water it is likely that would push the nose over, leveling his attitude and exposing all three gear to shear on the seawall, not just the mains. And I doubt he had any cabin pressurization; that's a checklist item (not that stick actuators always follow or complete the checklist, for various reasons) but I'm pretty sure the gear selection circuits will open the cabin outflow valves when gear down is selected too. But, if he did, that could be one explanation for the "flowering" back at the PB sleeve.

352 1.  The right engine is up against the forward fuselage and appears to be the location of the smoke in the photo from the evacuated passenger.  I would guess the fuselage got involved later which is why most seem to have successfully evac'ed.

2.  I would not jump to pilot error.  Loss of power on approach could cause them to drag the aircraft in and strike the tail.  A birdstrike is a great possibility, esp. since I have yet to see the port engine.  The pilots just may have saved everyone on board, let's not start blaming them yet.

I couldn't really tell what that thing in the water was. It's big enough to maybe be the tail, and that would be the only missing part that's big enough, so that makes sense. It seems like it would be tough to hit your tail right on the water/ground edge, even if you tried, but this is the unusual case, so maybe. Could the tail have come off shortly before? And had some forward motion?

I'm just trying to consider all the possibilities, before pointing the finger at the pilot. They say usually it's pilot error for these things, and that could be the case, but they deserve the benefit of the doubt.

It'd be pretty odd for a pilot to screw up under what appears to be ideal landing conditions.

Yes, there are people who will insist -- IN A BURNING CRASHED PLANE -- upon getting their bags from the overhead compartment. While others are stacked up in the aisle behind them and the smoke and heat are building.

Fair warning. If I'm in a burning crashed plane, and someone in front of me is stopping to get their carry-on stuff, they will get instantly rabbit punched to the floor and I will calmly step over them and continue evacuating.

Agree about getting stuff out of the overhead,  but some of that might have been laptops already in their possession.

However,  if I am ever in a situation like this I will not even be reaching for my purse under the seat.  I will be right there ready to slide off and will not hamper anyone for a millisecond.

420 I wouldn't trust their pilots either, especially after Air France 447. Was that the one that went down into the ocean? I read a fascinating article on that, said (IIRC) that the Airbus computer kept trying to average the inputs from the two pilots who were doing opposite things where as a Boeing would have demanded clarification which input was correct, thereby alerting the crew they were working at cross purposes (or something like that, I'm not a pilot). I found it a fascinating look at different design philosophies reflecting the two different cultures, the collective vs the individual.

431 #419   We had to have new drains cut in our basement after the super flood of 2008.  (An omen of the year,  no doubt.)

We had 6 inches of water in the basement.  We had drains but no sump pump.   Water came in through drains and the basement windows.  The original drains over the years had collapsed.  Also,  no sump pump (that swell late 60's home design).

Amazing the difference having a sump pump with new drains.  Basement no longer feels damp.  And we got a battery back-up pump.

Le Airbus makes a weird, weird noise on take-off. Like the steering wheel needs adjusting or there is a stow-away in the landing gear. Regardless, do not like these planes for that reason alone (combined with the computer-wonky stuff I read after that French flight).

473 @465 - Given the tailplane's role in flying the thing, it's entirely possible that, in a very narrow set of circumstances, if the tail broke off the nose would pitch down sharply and it'd flip (not roll, but pitch) 360deg around the CG and pancake onto its belly. Do I think that happened? No, because I can't imagine something like that happening without a lot more damage to the airframe and a lot more fatalities.

509 There's a website called Flight Aware that provides flight following, including certain flight data such as ground track, altitude and airspeed. (Probably some GPS based tracking system). Apparently the 'data' for that flight shows the aircraft approaching at 120 kts and a little offset from the center line heading of the runway. Then it seems there was a sudden change in altitude accompanied by an approximate 40 knot change in ground speed. Hmmmmmm....

512 Another Obamacare rule change dumped on Friday: The Obama administration announced Friday that it would significantly scale back the health lawÂ’s requirements that new insurance marketplaces verify consumersÂ’ income and health insurance status. Instead, the federal government will rely more heavily on consumersÂ’ self-reported information until 2015, when it plans to have stronger verification systems in place. snip~ The verification systems are meant to determine who qualifies for new benefits under the Affordable Care Act. The law includes tax subsidies to purchase health insurance for Americans who earn less than 400 percent of the poverty line, about $45,000 for an individual. http://tinyurl.com/n46mfph So the subsidies will be on the honor system? SFO 06/005 SFO NAV ILS RWY 28L GP OTS WEF(effective from) 1306011400-1308222359 SFO 06/004 SFO NAV ILS RWY 28R GP OTS WEF(effective from) 1306011400-1308222359 The above is aviation Greek for the glide path for runway 28L was out of service meaning basically the pilot flying had to "seat of the pants" the landing. But this is nothing unusual as ive done many of these landings without a glide path too. Just extra attn has to be paid. Throw in no glide path and a couple of tired pilots and this is what happens.

Dayum, we wouldn't want clear goals, immovable goalposts, or accountability now would we?  It takes a lot of scummy liberal lawyers to ensure that nothing in a bill is defined unambiguously, yet all seems to hang together in a coherent manner (at least at first glance).

This is why Nancy P was so insistent that we need to pass it to find out what's in it, because if you found out before it was passed, there might have been a reaction from the few citizens still able to read cursive.

Just the glide path portion. Still had the localizer. You make a true statement though. These foreign crews are mostly gear up, auto pilot on! And the 777 has an auto land system. Probably never had to land the thing manually.

So this might be good news for the flight simulator industry?

565...Doubtful. Boeing usually doesn't deliver their aircraft to airlines until their crews are proficient in all aspects of normal flight of that airplane. And bringing this plane in manually IS considered normal flight. It's done more times than you think. Pilots love greasing a landing.

----------

Yeah, but Soona...how much of that is done on a Simulator, instead of actual flight time?

Just asking, because I don't know.

In General Aviation, even though it's expensive to fuel up a plane and use it for training flights...they still do it.

With the Airlines, they are doing more and more training by Sim alone...to cut costs.

574 One of the coolest videos I have ever seen has now been removed from the site of the engineering school where it used to be. It showed some professor lighting a fire in a brick fire pit by pouring in charcoal briquettes and then positioning a lit cigarette over them and then pulling on a string that overturned a dewar flask of liquid oxygen onto the charcoal and lit cigarette. There was a flash and then instantly all the charcoal briquettes were prefect red glowing coals.

579 UPDATE: KTVU reports two fatalities.

This is devastating.  Went to church and all the cable outlets were saying "everyone got off ok" and come how to two fatalities and 70injured.  Ugh, don't report it MSM until you know for sure if it's correct.

Ask the pilot who landed the plane in the Hudson how good simulators are.  I've seen too many pilot reports and educational programs on how realistic simulators are nowdays.  They are an excellent  training for pilot efficiency without using the fuel.  There's no excuse for a pilot not knowing how to manually land any type of aircraft, period.

When I was a kid, one of the coolest things we did was to go to Greater Southwest Airport between Dallas and Fort Worth.  It was originally built to be a regional airport for both cities, but it never really got going good.  Eventually, American Airlines started using it for training.  You could watch 707s do touch and gos all day long.  When they built DFW directly north of it, it became more difficult to use it because of the air traffic.  It was really cool until then.

Sullenberger?

His career predated this reliance on simulators, Soona.

So not the best example to use in this argument.

Simulators are a good tool for training...yes.

But actual flight time is better.

That's why every 3rd leg of a flight, is a 'training' leg...with a lot of Airlines.

They let the low-time copilots take a turn, to get some real life experience.

Problem is...the Airlines don't tell the ticket-paying passengers that they are paying for a training flight.

584 http://tinyurl.com/mdodrdx Were the grounds keeping "fire prevention" goats on duty at the time? Was the pilot distracted by the goats? And most importantly, were any goats injured by the Boeing 777?

585 Jan 2008 Britah Airways 777 crash at Heathrow, Flight 38 from Beijing. Cause was engine icing from extended time at very cold temps at altitude. Engines quit on landing approach. he landed a wee bit short, as a result. Rolls Royce engines. Might be similar here, but I'm leaning toward the manual flying with a dead glide slope theory, since it was reported they didn't make any emergency radio calls. Oh, and up thread; Wiley Post and Will Rogers were in a custom Lockheed float plane, not a Boeing. Lockheed tried to get Wiley Post to not make that floatplane mod, as it was severally nose heavy, IIRC. Wiley knew better, of course.

586 Fox News babe Heather just reported to the world that that the Asiana flight was descending at 1400 feet per second. Um Heather, that equals a descent rate of 84,000 feet per minute or 954 mph. Geez, just shut up and think about what you are reporting and if you get it wrong correct it. Previous guest had said the descent rate was 1400 feet per minute which is about 2 times a normal stabilized rate of descent on final approach. Pretty much sums up the state of the media in today's world.

588 569 Coming from Asia it would naturally be inbound from the NW, and all flights land at SFO in the same direction over the bay, heading NW, so it would have to do a 180, wind shear or not. I like in the hills in S. San Fran above SFO and watched the aftermath of the crash from my backyard. And yes, NPR did mention the sequester and its effects on air traffic control.

Posted by: Pervy Grin at July 06, 2013 05:07 PM (VfvZG)

589 SFO is probably the second worst airport I've ever had the displeasure to land in. After a night landing, I told my late father it was the scariest landing I've had the pleasure to experience, because, at night, you cannot tell where the water ends and the runway starts. My dad, having a private pilot license, blew off what I said, until he experienced the same thing. Reno is probably the scariest airport I've ever flown in and out of. Fucking runways laid down parallel to the Sierra's. The gusts of wind always blowing across the runways, during landing and takeoff are something to behold. Not to mention the serious bank that is made shortly after takeoff from Reno, in order to avoid the fucking mountain that is in the flight path.
