An update from someone who says he was a passenger, the pic is up close. RT from @DanRiehl
We're into the newsgathering confusing eyewitness account bullshit stage at this point. Witnesses claiming both wings were torn off when they are still clearly attached after the fire.
It feels like they came in low, or short on the runway, damaged the tail, rolled to wherever while pieces got tore off the tail.. bags deployed and people got the fuck off. Then more fire.
But I don't know that. I don't know shit. I sure hope that.
DrewM sent me this pic of debris at the edge of the runway.
As of yet we don't know who was hurt or how badly. 290 adults and a baby on the manifest, plus the 12 crewmembers. I pray they are all ok.
UPDATE: KTVU reports two fatalities.

A plane crashed while landing at San Francisco International Airport Saturday morning after its tail came off while it was touching down on the runway.
According to a witness, around 11:20 a.m. the plane was just about to land — its landing gear had come down — when the tail of the plane came off.
After wobbling for a minute, the aircraft flipped upside down, coming to a stop on runway on itÂ’s back.
The plane, reportedly a Boeing 777, was coming from South Korea, according to flight tracking information.

Just looking at the pic, it sure seems the landing gear isn't down. Plane is sitting flat to the ground.
Perhaps he made a gear up landing and the tail broke at touchdown?

Yeah, that's what I was thinking about as the pictures on Fox went around the plane. Looked to me like the bottom half of the aft end of the pressure vessel was missing. Shredded aft end bits on the runway have me wondering about a bomb in the cargo hold.

That Fox video of the debris on the runway. Interesting. It was still pressurized at landing judging by the long stream of debris that was blown out. And notice how the remains of the vertical stabilizer and both horizontal stabilizers fell on the runway. Get the feeling the aft bulkhead might have failed. But this is all speculation.

Plane looks like it may have had a low approach and suffered a tail strike if it came down early on the runway approach just past the water which may also account for the collapsed landing gear.
You can see the remains of the tail structure right at the end of the runway in pieces. Shit doesn't 'fall off' without help, like a really hard jolt from a short landing that stripped the landing gear and the tail structure.

KTBU showed good video from end of runway to remaining fuselage. Looks like the pilot was way low. Keeping in mind that SFO is on reclaimed land, the tail struck the end of the runway. Less of a drag and more of a slight ridge impact. Stabilizers didn't make it to the nominal runway threshold. Plane skidded to a stop about 2500 to 3000 feet down from the nominal threshold.
Looks like pilot error, or maybe this was the one case of a personal electronic device affecting the navigation convincing the pilot he had more altitude than he had. If so, the pilot was flying instrument on a clear day.

From the look of the rocks at the end of the runway...it looks like the fuselage made contact there.
There is a long trail, on the ground, from the rocks/water's edge, down the runway to where the plane left the runway.

If the aft pressure bulkhead fails while the plane is still pressurized. Guess what you now have a nozzle that will expel the higher pressure air and what ever is loose.
Plus jet wash can blow stuff backwards. If you give me a second I can find a picture of an F-16 tipped onto a wingtip because it got behind a B-1B's jet wash.

not all superstructure repair is because of a flawed design....
the pilots are rough on airframes, you sometimes have ramp incidents with support eqpt....
there's a hole in my heart not being p[art of the dynamic environment of high-intensity flight ops.....
we had a DC-8 have to get inspected from a K-loader impact on the ramp once....

No but the tail doesn't fall that way on its own and it is still very close together in the fall...
that means it was
1) tail strike
2) abrupt landing with a pressurized cabin and a clean shear....
I've read years of NTSB reports in insomnia, my rather ample gut tells me this was pilot error and tail strike....
no offense or pretension meant

207...not all superstructure repair is because of a flawed design....
the pilots are rough on airframes, you sometimes have ramp incidents with support eqpt....
Bad policies are also rough on airframes...such as 'tankering fuel'.
Planes are designed to take off full of fuel, but landing without burning off that weight can put undue stress on the airframe.
When fuel prices are high...there is temptation to tanker fuel from home base rather than refuel at each stop.
I don't know that this would be a factor here, though, in this case, with the tail coming off.
Fuel tanks are in the wings, for the most part...so that's where the weight is.

Looks like the obvious just bit a few of the 'experts' commenting on Fox.
Plane came in to low on approach and scraped the landing gear and tail off the plane when it struck the very end of the runway.
I think you can safely say there's one pilot who's next flight will be as a passenger.
PS... it appears that the fire was caused by the engine after it ripped away and was small enough to allow the passengers to get away before it spread to the body of the aircraft.

I have been known to take over one flight with a psycho on board, as "I am a RN" is my signal to family "thar she blows!" I reported the passenger to the flight attendant as appearing to have had a psychotic break as she paced around the 757 after take-off on a long flight. The pilot, the crew, and the ground security people in Atlanta once relied on my vast authority, due to years of reading this blog, that the crazy woman could make it to our destination safely and we did not need to have an emergency landing in Atlanta and turn back (she was just off her gyroscope and not dangerous. I received a couple of free gin and tonics for babysitting her in the rear galley with flight attendants).
When I get on a plane do not mess with me, as I have stuff to do and that plane ain't turning around unless it is a mechanical issue. Do not go psycho and walk around throwing your beads and cups of water, as this is a pretty clear sign you are nuts and I will report you.

262...How much fuel would be left over from a flight from Seoul to Frisco? Yes, there is always enough for emergencies, but certainly not enough to have that effect, no?
Left over from a long flight like this one? ...Probably not much more than 'reserves'.
Which is doing it right.
'Fuel tankering' does stress damage over time...and can finally take it's toll at times when there really isn't as much weight as that which did the gradual damage.
It can be a straw-that-broke-the-camel's-back sort of thing.
I've seen crinkles in the skin, under the wings, from landing with too much fuel.
But x-rays can show signs of stress in other parts of a plane too.

SAO PAULO (AP) — Police say enraged spectators invaded a football field, stoned the referee to death and quartered his body after he stabbed a player to death.
The Public Safety Department of the state of Maranhao says in a statement that it all started when referee Otavio da Silva expelled player Josenir Abreu from a game last weekend. The two got into a fist fight, then Silva took out a knife and stabbed Abreu, who died on his way to the hospital.
The statement issued this week says Abreu's friends and relatives immediately "rushed into the field, stoned the referee to death and quartered his body."
Local news media say the spectators also decapitated Silva and stuck his head on a stake in the middle of the field.
Police have arrested one suspect.

I wonder if people look at the pictures and since they only see debris beyond the water assume that that's where it starts. The thing is, there could be debris in the water.
Second, just because there's debris, it doesn't necessarily mean the fuselage was dragging (although that MIGHT be the case). It could just be that once it broke stuff streamed out.
Third, if some part of the tail broke, could that not have affected the altitude, and CAUSED the plane to be low? It seems like people are assuming that since it was low that that was the CAUSE, rather than the effect.
Fourth, where IS the tail section? You see the vertical and horizontal stabilizer parts, but what about the rest. Did everything but the fins disintegrate? How would that work?

2. I would not jump to pilot error. Loss of power on approach could cause them to drag the aircraft in and strike the tail. A birdstrike is a great possibility, esp. since I have yet to see the port engine. The pilots just may have saved everyone on board, let's not start blaming them yet.

I couldn't really tell what that thing in the water was. It's big enough to maybe be the tail, and that would be the only missing part that's big enough, so that makes sense. It seems like it would be tough to hit your tail right on the water/ground edge, even if you tried, but this is the unusual case, so maybe. Could the tail have come off shortly before? And had some forward motion?
I'm just trying to consider all the possibilities, before pointing the finger at the pilot. They say usually it's pilot error for these things, and that could be the case, but they deserve the benefit of the doubt.
It'd be pretty odd for a pilot to screw up under what appears to be ideal landing conditions.

Yes, there are people who will insist -- IN A BURNING CRASHED PLANE -- upon getting their bags from the overhead compartment. While others are stacked up in the aisle behind them and the smoke and heat are building.
Fair warning. If I'm in a burning crashed plane, and someone in front of me is stopping to get their carry-on stuff, they will get instantly rabbit punched to the floor and I will calmly step over them and continue evacuating.

Fair warning. If I'm in a burning crashed plane, and someone in front of me is stopping to get their carry-on stuff, they will get instantly rabbit punched to the floor and I will calmly step over them and continue evacuating.
No shit. Who is the doofus that stands and watches someone open an over-head bin and get their friggin' luggage right after the plane crashed? Instead of rabbit punching, if the passenger were smallish, I would grab two-hand hold on the hair and belt and toss them back into the seat out of the way.

We had 6 inches of water in the basement. We had drains but no sump pump. Water came in through drains and the basement windows. The original drains over the years had collapsed. Also, no sump pump (that swell late 60's home design).
Amazing the difference having a sump pump with new drains. Basement no longer feels damp. And we got a battery back-up pump.

It's funny, but when I get on a plane and it's an Airbus I always get a little, tiny, almost inaudible voice in my head saying "Damn, wish this was a Boeing", union workers or no. I dunno if it's logical or if I just don't completely trust the French, but it's there.
Posted by: Weirddave at July 06, 2013 04:53 PM (aH+zP)
Le Airbus makes a weird, weird noise on take-off. Like the steering wheel needs adjusting or there is a stow-away in the landing gear. Regardless, do not like these planes for that reason alone (combined with the computer-wonky stuff I read after that French flight).

One of the coolest videos I have ever seen has now been removed from the site of the engineering school where it used to be. It showed some professor lighting a fire in a brick fire pit by pouring in charcoal briquettes and then positioning a lit cigarette over them and then pulling on a string that overturned a dewar flask of liquid oxygen onto the charcoal and lit cigarette. There was a flash and then instantly all the charcoal briquettes were prefect red glowing coals.

Dayum, we wouldn't want clear goals, immovable goalposts, or accountability now would we? It takes a lot of scummy liberal lawyers to ensure that nothing in a bill is defined unambiguously, yet all seems to hang together in a coherent manner (at least at first glance).
This is why Nancy P was so insistent that we need to pass it to find out what's in it, because if you found out before it was passed, there might have been a reaction from the few citizens still able to read cursive.

Now we know why the Health Care Act is 2800 pages.
It's a law that allows full discretionary power at the federal level. ...
I've tried reading through that thing.
It is poorly written...by design...in order to leave much of it 'open to interpretation' by govt bureaucrats.

Bringing in a 777 beast, manually, might've been something that crew had never done before.

Doubtful. Boeing usually doesn't deliver their aircraft to airlines until their crews are proficient in all aspects of normal flight of that airplane. And bringing this plane in manually IS considered normal flight. It's done more times than you think. Pilots love greasing a landing.

The ILS was out of service on that runway?
If so, then this definitely could've been a factor.

Just the glide path portion. Still had the localizer. You make a true statement though. These foreign crews are mostly gear up, auto pilot on! And the 777 has an auto land system. Probably never had to land the thing manually.

So this might be good news for the flight simulator industry?

Yeah, but Soona...how much of that is done on a Simulator, instead of actual flight time?
Just asking, because I don't know.
In General Aviation, even though it's expensive to fuel up a plane and use it for training flights...they still do it.
With the Airlines, they are doing more and more training by Sim alone...to cut costs.

This is devastating. Went to church and all the cable outlets were saying "everyone got off ok" and come how to two fatalities and 70injured. Ugh, don't report it MSM until you know for sure if it's correct.

Ask the pilot who landed the plane in the Hudson how good simulators are. I've seen too many pilot reports and educational programs on how realistic simulators are nowdays. They are an excellent training for pilot efficiency without using the fuel. There's no excuse for a pilot not knowing how to manually land any type of aircraft, period.

When I was a kid, one of the coolest things we did was to go to Greater Southwest Airport between Dallas and Fort Worth. It was originally built to be a regional airport for both cities, but it never really got going good. Eventually, American Airlines started using it for training. You could watch 707s do touch and gos all day long. When they built DFW directly north of it, it became more difficult to use it because of the air traffic. It was really cool until then.

Sullenberger?
His career predated this reliance on simulators, Soona.
So not the best example to use in this argument.
Simulators are a good tool for training...yes.
But actual flight time is better.
That's why every 3rd leg of a flight, is a 'training' leg...with a lot of Airlines.
They let the low-time copilots take a turn, to get some real life experience.
Problem is...the Airlines don't tell the ticket-paying passengers that they are paying for a training flight.
