Democrat Congressman Raul Grijalva: Rocks Sink
— JohnE.

Party of science.

I thought the "E=MC^2" on the whiteboard was helpful. It let me know I was about to have my face blown off with some epic scientific science.

75 Since - according to the congressman - the pipeline will be carrying rocks, what is his theory about the 100% success rate the Alaskan pipeline has had in spilling no rocks whatsoever in the entire history of its existence? One thing I wholeheartedly agree with the congressman about is: he's no scientist.

Follow up question: since the pipeline will be crossing entirely over land, and should it rupture, is it the congressman's assertion that the rocks will sink back into the ground?

78 Why exactly is spilled sand difficult to clean up in comparison to a spilled liquid again? Spill it on the ground and your cleanup crew is a team of shovelers. I mean I look at that and think...Wow even if you spilled this stuff right into a lake it would just all collect at the bottom where you can easily dredge it up. Thanks Raul Grijalva, I had no idea oil sand was this safe.

84 I find it hard to believe that a new oil recovery process could only create 50 new permanent jobs.

I didn't see any oil residue coming of those magical sinking rocks so what is the problem with them sinking?

The oil is completely adhered to the rocks so spilling it on the ground couldn't possibly leach through the ground and into a body of water.  Your "experiment" shows that rain water will not wash the oil into a nearby river.

That's because it's transparently horseshit.  There  would be more than 50 permanent jobs created at  one single drilling site, not to mention  those at associated pipeyards,  chefs, cleaning personnel,  safety  inspectors, truckers,  hotshot drivers, pilots, etc.

141 This is probably the sort of 'Science' which influences teh JEF. He is as clueless as this bozo. It is hard to know where to start. The whiteboard has nothing more than vague, unrelated scribbles that a 9th grader might use to imply 'Science'. If one looks carefully, one can see (how does one do superscripts here?) A^2 + B^2 = C^2 next to what appears to be an equilateral triangle. Hmm.

The really laughable part is where he tosses the rocks into the beaker. Wow..., those are going to be some weapons grade pumps handling that stuff. That, aside, let's assume this fantasy is real..., and rocks are being pumped through the line. If it were a rupture, are the rocks going to sink through to the water table? Complete bullshit, start to finish.

Oh..., and who conducted that study? Why, the Cornell Global Labor Institute. Let's read their own self-description:
-----------
"Welcome to GLI.

The Cornell Global Labor Institute was established in 2005 to work with trade unions in the U.S. and internationally to help them and their civil society partners develop solutions to major social, economic and environmental challenges."

161 Oh, I'm having trouble looking at the video, but it did occur to me that, beyond the slight of hand I did above, all rocks--every last one of them, everyone that any human who has ever existed has seen--do in fact float. All of them. Right now. They are floating. On the mantle. What we know as rocks--entire continents of them-- float because they are less dense, which is why they floated to the surface "as the Earth cooled", and the denser materials sank. Rocks float. Just not on water. Unless you know Archimede's principle, in which case they do. (Oh, btw, if that 4/3r^2 equation in the back is supposed to be the volume of a sphere, it is missing pi. Though, by the looks of him, Congressmen Grijalva rarely does.)

167 The heavy crude oil or crude bitumen extracted from oil sands is a viscous solid or semisolid form that does not easily flow at normal oil pipeline temperatures, making it difficult to transport to market and expensive to process into gasoline, diesel fuel, and other products. It must be either mixed with lighter petroleum (either liquid or gas) or chemically split before it can be transported by pipeline for upgrading into synthetic crude oil.

This is exactly the kind of common-sense proposal we need to keep our economy growing," Reid said in a statement Friday.

Those who have a taste for bullshit pseudoscientific agitprop, as cited above, should Bing "The Story of Stuff," by some dumb twat whose mind (if you'll pardon the exaggeration) is totally unsullied by knowledge.

306 I know I shouldn't bother but I can't help myself. 4/3 R^2 ? not sure but in addition to leaving out pi he seems to have taken 2 sphere formulas (area and volume) and mashed them together. Why is he using sphere formulas? a pipe is a cylinder not a sphere E= MC^2? Nice touch, at least it has something to do with energy Y = MX + b ? The other 2 formulas have squared functions so a straight line graph isn't going to work

*Please do not infer any intended or unintended relationship between the citizens of Mexico and grease/oil/lubricants or any other petroleum based substance.  Mexicans, like all humans, are carbon based life forms and given enough time, pressure and heat have just as much chance of becoming a diamond as any other carbon based life form.

Posted by: dissent555 at May 31, 2013 03:59 PM (yR6A1)

325 The study is by "Cornell University Global Labor Institute." It's online, so I read it. What the study actually demonstrates is:
- The people who wrote it surely never worked on a pipeline project;
- They surely have never actually worked on a construction project;
- There is strong evidence that they have never witnessed a major construction project, even from a distance;
- The study's authors are adept at raising strawmen;
The main conclusion to be drawn from that study is that Cornell University is no longer worthy of respect.

326 Ok, watching that made my brain stop. I've spent 30 minutes rebooting it, and am finally able to type again. Before Brain Failure, I noticed that the rocks were in the water, but no oil was coming out contaminating the water. Ignoring the fact that the oil would be extracted from the sand and actually sent as liquid, wouldn't sending oil down a pipeline hygienically encased in rock be a good idea? I mean, talk about protecting the Ogallala Aquifer! The whole freaking pipeline could rupture, but the aquifer would remain pristine. Raul, you have stumbled upon the germ of an idea, there!
