Democratic Senator Ron Wyden Joins Rand Paul's Filibuster
— Ace

Ted Cruz joined earlier, which is good.

But it's a bit of a feather in Rand Paul's cap that he's now shamed a Democrat to join.

Apparently he mentioned the legal concept of Outlawry, and made the point that someone deemed by the state to be in this hazardous legal state at least should have the right to be formally notified of such.

Sort of exactly the point I made.

Live: Here's an online feed.

Rubio's now up. Reportedly he began with a water joke.

This Is Exciting: Thoughts on restoring the nation's character to good working order.

56 Obama gets killed in the polls because people believe he does not show leadership. I believe he went down 6 points.

Obama starts hitting the circuit. Publicizing to the hilt, he is having lunch with Republicans. he's "building bridges", this "historic" president.

Republicans take the bait and have lunch with him. He takes it one step further and invites "conservatives".  This is mostly for appearances but also to divide and conquer Republicans

Keep in mind Obama is focused on destroying the Republican Party.

Republicans fall for it. John McCain guffaws, Susan Collins wets herself from laughter.

Obama walks away. He laughs too. At how stupid Republicans, who now are winning confidence with voters, surrender to his silly antics so quickly.

Notice, nowhere does Obama say he's wrong. OR that he is going to stop falsely wielding the Sequester against the American people like an axe to make his point. He also is not about to cut spending.

Ding-dong dupes

He wanted to limit remaining debate and then go to a cloture vote on the nomination.  After Rand objected, Reid threw in the towel and said that Brennan won't come to a vote tonight.  Rand will talk as long as he wants now.

316 In the car a few minutes ago I was listening to Hannity talking with Louis Gohmert.

I was gobsmacked to hear Gohmert say he hasn't received a single call regarding Obamacare in weeks.  Said it seemingly has dropped off the public's radar.

And thanks to the seagull that shit in the middle of my windshield.

"Did Reid just try to close business for the day?"

It's telling how many regard this as irrelevant and aren't even there.  This is the whole effing job of the senate, to debate issues like this.  Oop, it's 5PM, time to call it a day.  Let's not discuss assassinating Americans on US soil without due process, what a silly debate.

Rand Paul can't lose with this.

All he has to do is stay with this.  Every republican senator who doesn't want a primary needs to get on the floor with him.  He's already told Obama the way to end this is to make or send over a clear statement saying he won't violate the consitution by killing Americans in the U.S.

There is no one on the left or the right who can defend Obama's position, so Rand has this in the bag.

The longer he goes, the raspier his voice gets, if he takes his jacket off and leans into the speech, the better off he is.  You can't pay for shit this good.

If only those pussies who are going to dinner at the White House would cancel to be on the floor with Rand, this would be a moment people would point to for years.

490 I agree with Ace's "Conversation" post but let me say more: There are points where drones could be used, but the difference is to target an action (a plane having been taken over by terrorists) and to target an individual just for bein' a terrorist. But we, as conservatives, have always had to balance the needs of safety vs. Constitutional rights as well as things that may not be addressed in the Constitution but are still the right restraints. It's the Left that set down the ridiculous and inflexible bars -- particularly Obama. They were the ones who said that foreign prisoners caught in an overseas warzone and brought in chains to a military base were somehow entitled to full Constitutional rights because they somehow thought that the term "US soil" was literal and they didn't understand common law. Bottom line: The Democrats -- particularly Obama supporters -- should be going ABSOLUTELY ELEVENTY!!1!111!!! APESHIT over this and the best we get is some tepid response from a blogger or two. Most have their heads in the sand and are waiting to hear when they can pop up and discuss gay marriage again.

512 On "outlawry" I would remind you are Founders were all decried as traitors and miscreants. That designation was done by a monarch.

Accordingly, our Constitution saw monarchs, appropriately, as an anathema to our republic. They vested power in checks and balances purposely. It wasn't a mistake.

So unpopular as it may be, I don't like the idea of one man in our government having the power of life or death over another citizen. What checks that power? Not only that where does such power come from? It's certainly not under the presidents constitutional power. Nor do I buy the argument it's part of his duty to protect us.

Furthermore, I am a bit unclear why a "single man" is the only option. Surely there would be some consultation with Congress in advance in which, given the gravity, proof, reasoning and decisions would be explained.

I am not some bleeding heart liberal and glad Alwaki rest in pieces. But I am also a practical constitutionalist and feel presidents, and the governments sacred duty is to protect and defend this nation. But that also means our constitutional ideals and principles. I worry about the lack of checks and balances. When does that come in? Proving today's case does not mean that tomorrows wont involve democratic abuses.

It's debatable where Perot elected Clinton. But say he did. So what? In the long run Perot helped conservatives because he was a loud voice - the ONLY voice at the time - talking about the need to cut spending and worry about the deficit. Putting aside your political blinders, which 8 year period was better for fiscal discipline 1993-2000 or 2001-2008? Without Perot, there's no Clinton. But without Clinton, there's no Gingrich/1994 revolution. And without that there's probably no late 90s economic boom and balanced budgets.

It's my recollection that the whole thing started because the feds wanted someone to infiltrate some sort of white supremist group, and they picked Randy Travis to do it.  Their undercover agent intentionally entrapped him by getting him to saw the barrel off of a shotgun so as to give the agent probable cause to arrest him and bring pressure on him to help them infiltrate this group.

This is just what I recall of the events leading up to the incident.  I guess my point is, if the above is true, then THEY started it.

That's right, it was Weaver, not Travis.  And the rest of what you say also sounds familiar.

The agents stalking up to his home killed one of the family dogs, at which point his son shot him with a rifle, at which point one of the other agents (I think) killed Weaver's son.

"Yes they had an outstanding warrant. For intent to sell illegal sawed offed shotguns to a White Supremacy group. The law endorcement officer was killed days before the standoff. There were only a couple of law enforcement observing the area at the time. "

There was no warrant to trespass on Weaver's land.  They had no warrant for the action that took place.  There was in fact a bench warrant for Weaver for failing to appear in court over a year earlier.  And it was later ruled that the authorities were guilty of trying to entrap Weaver and that he hadn't committed any crime.

During the incident in question, they had no warrant to breach the property or search for Weaver.  They did not knock on the door and make the presence known and present a warrant.  They were treating private property as public land sneaking around in the woods with guns and unmarked uniforms and ski masks.  They scared his kids who then attempted to defend themelves and in the course of this a firefight commenced and Mr. Weavers children killed.  He wasn't even there.  He was on the property but far away from this initial incident.  The noise from the firefight caught his attention and then it turned into an even bigger firefight.

Yes they had an outstanding warrant. For intent to sell illegal sawed offed shotguns to a White Supremacy group. The law endorcement officer was killed days before the standoff. There were only a couple of law enforcement observing the area at the time.

He, Randy Weaver, had an outstanding warrant for sawing off a shotgun 1/4" below the legal minimum length, at the request of an undercover FBI agent. When he did not appear at his hearing, they started ramping things up, as you correctly point out as a couple of LE observing....though not the area, they were monitoring the Weaver cabin.

Weaver's 16 year old son took one of the family dogs out to do some hunting. The dog alerted on one of these observers, who then shot the dog. Boy fired off a round, turned, and fled. He was shot in the back, and killed.

Vicki Weaver was standing in the door of their cabin, with her baby in her arms when FBI sniper Lon Horiuchi put a bullet through her throat....killing her, not instantly, but dead all the same. The FBI then taunted Weaver throughout the night, asking why the baby was crying, and what happened to it's mother.

It is my recollection that the undercover Law Enforcement officer is the one who urged him to saw the barrel off.  Initially Randy Weaver sawed it off, but it wasn't below the legal limit.  The officer then induced him to saw it off even further, so as to make sure he could have cause to arrest him.

It was an entrapment sting is what I recall.

Part of the problem is without a doubt they have tried to suppress information.  Exactly what transpired is he said, she said, and a lot of those people are dead and can't talk.  From day one the government started a media campaign to make Weaver sound like some kind of gun nut, a terrorist.  And still do this day that's what most people think.

"My problem with the government isn't just the power it can wield but the type of sick personality that can sometimes be attracted to working for them. "

I would argue this is simply humanity.  Federal government, local government, military, militia, there are turds everywhere.  I knew a lot of great guys in the military, a lot of guys there for the right reason.  But there were also some there simply because they truly enjoyed killing people.  I know that sounds harsh, but it's for real.  But since killing was our business I was happy to have them.  They were great at it.  But I wouldn't leave them alone with my kids, lol

Of course, agree completely and let me say most of the people in law enforcement are decent people with a desire to serve and protect.  The problem is that the type of personality attracted to being a prison guard is going to exhibit more problems in this area of abuse of power than the type of person attracted to being a florist.  The harder it is to purge people from the federal government the easier it is for the bad apples to hide within their union employment rules barrel.

Is this really true? That's disgusting, the names and pictures of every agent involved in that taunting should have been on the front page of every newspaper in the country. They should have been fired and driven out of society into the wilderness. My problem with the government isn't just the power it can wield but the type of sick personality that can sometimes be attracted to working for them.

Yes, it's all true. Horiuchi, the man that killed the unarmed Vicky Weaver, was later given an award for that action. He's now retired, and living under an assumed name.

The FBI also had a wheeled robot thing, that they trundled up in front of the cabin. It had a phone on it, ostensibly to communicate with Weaver. It had a shotgun mounted above the phone, which Randy wisely refused to use. They taunted him with that too, telling him to answer the phone....Vicky wanted to talk to him, (this was after she was killed).
