— Ace This guy keeps misspelling "America" as "Detroit," which seems odd, because they're not really even that close.
But keep in mind, he means America.
WR Mead wrote about this today, under the headline "Obama to Detroit: Drop Dead."
This is where blue governance has brought Detroit in the end: not even a liberal Democratic administration will step in to save the pensions of thousands of public workers and African Americans, condemning countless innocents to having their pensions and health benefits gutted in bankruptcy court....
Detroit has been spending on average $100 million more than it has taken in for each of the past five years. The cityÂ’s $11 billion in unsecured debt includes $6 billion in health and other retirement benefits and $3 billion in retiree pensions for its 20,000 city pensioners, who are slated to receive less than 10 percent of what they were promised...
And now DetroitÂ’s desperate request for a bailout has been turned down by the Obama White House.
Progressive politicians, wonks, and activists can only blame big corporations and other liberal bogeymen for so long. The truth is that corrupt machine politics in a one-party system devoted to the blue social model wrecked an entire city and thousands of lives beyond repair. The sooner blues come to terms with this reality, the greater chance other cities will have of avoiding DetroitÂ’s fate.
But we won't: ObamaCare is Detroit.
The media wants to talk a bunch about the Zimmerman case and have "national conversations" about lessons we need to learn from a 45-second confrontation involving two people.
Notice they don't want to have national conversations about what lessons we can learn from 51 years of True Blue Democratic administration in Detroit.
Incidentally, today's game on Twitter is retweeting all the liberals and liberal groups who tweeted about Romney saying "Let Detroit go bankrupt" before the election.
That last link via @mamaswati.

Blues come to terms with reality. Hmph. That'll be something.
The reality is that they will not, and that there will consequently be more Detroits.
My money is on Shitcargo as the next blue city to fail.
Hopefully this will not happen until after Obama is out of office. He has no longstanding ties to Detroit, but he certainly does to the Windy City, and as we all know, everything is about him all of the time, nonstop.

yes. conversations on race. Below a quote from a noted racist, by todays standards
"There is another class of colored people who make a business of keeping the troubles, the wrongs, and the hardships of the black race before the public. Having learned that they are able to make a living out of their troubles, they have grown into the settled habit of advertising their wrongs — partly because they want sympathy and partly because it pays. Some of these people do not want the black to lose his grievances, because they do not want to lose their jobs."
"I am afraid that there is a certain class of race-problem solvers who don't want the patient to get well, because as long as the disease holds out they have not only an easy means of making a living, but also an easy medium through which to make themselves prominent before the public."
Who said this?
Booker T. Washington in 1911

Detroit.
Unsustainable pension plans.
Angry Muslims.
Angry and aimless illiterate blacks dressed like burglars.
Millions of illegal aliens.
Unsustainable welfare programs.

Men 'marrying' men.
These are the fruits of Democrats' looms. This is what Democrats' policies have wrought.

It's more than just the Blue Social - Political model.
It's the deliberate effort of African American Democrat politicians to create a black majority, black run city, that they would rule and dominate.
The expected to be rich and powerful, ruling the manufacturing metropolis of Detroit. A new mecca of political power for African Americans. Coleman Young said in so many words over 40 years ago.
And it has all come true, except the part about being rich and powerful. Because a lot of the automobile manufacturing and associated companies, with the good-paying blue collar jobs got up and left. They moved to the suburbs, out in the country or somewhere else in America, Canada or Mexico. And took their tax receipts with them. Imagine that.
This new mecca of Detroit is a paradigm of the Inner City African American Ideal. Kind of a tattered version of the Emerald City in Oz. Where street gangs roam, where thousands of vacant houses fall into disrepair. Where thousands are on welfare or unemployment. The population is half of what it was 40 years ago. The people and the jobs are gone. Just a husk of a burned out city remains. The same thing has happened in my hometown of Dayton, Ohio. Just on a smaller scale.
They should build a statue to Coleman Young and dedicate the future of Detroit to him. But they probably couldn't afford it.

Fascinating, the property tax on a house in Detroit (per ace's article) worth 50k is higher than my house assed at 200k.
Incredible.
Also, why is DC's Property tax so low? Extrapolating out, their tax rate is about 1/3 of mine and to be honest, I didn't think mine was that high.

OK.
So, looking at the ripple effect here.
Detroit goes bust, gets 0 bailout (perhaps? I thought that was a big if, but apparently not.)
I see IL going next (although IIRC there's some potential pitfalls over states going broke.)
Meanwhile, more cities/counties in CA will go belly up as well (especially as, I am to understand, the jobs are pulling out.)
Finally, in local effect, I expect that within 5 years STL city will also declare bankruptcy. Which I think, overall is a good thing. The county needs to pull them in to get them under control (financially mostly) but cannot do it unless it's on the county's term, which requires a bankruptcy.
Then and only then can the mess start to get cleaned up. (I think STL city has about 5 more years until it's income tax on all employees working or living in the city sundowns, which is when the hell really breaks loose.)

It won't be limited to those. There will be a large number of midsize cities, Cleveland-sized cities, that are also going to fail.
And then there will be scattered failed small municipalities everywhere, a lot of which aren't even big enough for there to be much consciousness of them outside the immediate area. Slumburbia.
And these failed places will essentially stay failed, because there just is not any remaining financial capability in the rest of the country to underwrite rehabilitating all of these busted urbs.

Do a study of a large sample of Americans of a certain generation, say around 50 years old. Ask them to give a detailed account of the places they lived their entire life. Compare those locations to the dominant party in power at the time. With the local government party in power rating higher than state party. Then run correlation against the income level of the people in the study. Are people at the higher end of the income distribution more likely to have lived under conservative local governments then those who lived most of their lives under Democrat dominated government?

Missus Muldoon and I were talking this morning about the parallel between the jihadi problem and black culture in America (in the wake of the Zimmerman verdict). It seems that until the bulk of mainstream blacks are willing to disavow the thug actions of the extremists rather than a knee-jerk defense as their default position, it is hard to envision an America where we will be judged on the content of our character rather than the color of our skin. Much like waiting for 'moderate' muslims to speak out against jihadis. Is this a false construct?

let's make it permanently. It's not as if you're saying something Unexpected and New. I get it, blacks are stupid savages and ruin everything they touch. Is that about it? Are you done with your little racial victory dance or would you like to add more to that?
Do you have anything of your own you can be proud of besides your white skin?
See, apart from the racial ugliness, this is the other part of racism that's so repellent: the sad notion that there are people out there whose sense of value consists only of their skin color. They sort of throw their ropes behind the S. S. White and let the Big White Boat pull them along in the water.
I think it's pathetic that a fucking guy can be so proud of being white. Is that all you got going on for you?
And frankly, let's follow this logic a bit: given that white people have accomplished a hell of a fucking lot, how pathetic is that a white guy chooses to make his mere Whiteness his fucking source of pride?
Doesn't that sort of make you a free-riding n*gger on the rest of us, dude? To put it into your sort of language?
Okay once again, because you guys don't seem to get this:
YOU ARE REPELLENT. YOU REPEL PEOPLE. WE DO NOT SECRETLY AGREE WITH YOU. WE CONDESCEND TO REMAIN SILENT, HOPING YOU WILL GET IT OUT OF YOUR SYSTEM AND MOVE ON AND SAVE US THE SOCIAL EMBARRASSMENT OF INTERVENTIONS LIKE THIS.
Okay you got that now? Since you're just being honest about race, I'll do you the favor and be honest right back. THAT'S what we really think.
So the next time you want to pop off, and you think you're earning Secret Silent Nod Hero Points for your shit-- NO. You sound like low-class gutter-dwelling degenerates whose only achievement is having been born to a white mother and now you're riding that GLORY to the grave.
People are pathetic for clinging to glory years of high school.
How about those who cling the glory of their mere birth?
If I get to to decide who's "White," myself, personally, I toss out all the fucking deadweight welfare cases whose only contribution is an accident of their birth.

No, it's not a false construct, S. Muldoon. I had the exact same conversation with someone else the other day. I think the root of the problem among the majority of blacks, as with radical Islam, is a toxic combination of poverty, the destruction of the public education system esp in the inner city, and the indoctrination provided by the media.

It is EMBARRASSING for the rest of us. You are free-riding on the respectable company people make here. You are USING and ENJOYING that respectable company, but then undermining it, stealing from it, vandalizing it.
Because people don't wish to be embarrassed and don't wish to take the socially-horrifying step of calling out a fucking weirdo, I'll take the hit and do it my damn self.
If you're going to embarrass us, I'll embarrass you back. Okay? Sound fair? Otherwise you're just a Taker, not a Maker, taking a shit in a well-maintained public area and then calling yourself proper for doing so because you're White so of course that particular shit was Classy and somehow linked to Leonardo DaVinci by the White Gene.

"The Left has been pushing for large "metro-wide' forms of government and taxation so the productive people can't flee to the suburbs to escape crime and taxation and corruption."
That was a favorite theme of Coleman Young 30 some years ago, and the
suburbs weren't going to have any part of it back then.

Logistics is still a combination of muscle and motor powered. The problem is and it is again across the spectrum that as the older hard pros in the field are retiring they are being replaced with less driven individuals and to a degree you can't simply hire to replace the holes in productivity. There are practical limits to the time and motion that can be exerted space wise on a logistical operation and if a body is not meeting baseline methodology output of sorting, loading, or transition per man hour the bottom line suffers.

Do a study of a large sample of Americans of a
certain generation, say around 50 years old. Ask them to give a detailed
account of the places they lived their entire life. Compare those
locations to the dominant party in power at the time. With the local
government party in power rating higher than state party. Then run correlation
against the income level of the people in the study. Are people at the higher end of the income distribution more likely to have lived under conservative local governments then those who lived most of their lives under Democrat dominated government?

If Organization A proposes to take money from person B, and give it to Person C, the motivation is not compassion for C, but the power and money which comes to Organization A, from being in charge of the transfer, and taking the skim.
People will believe it just fine until you tell them that Organization A is the Government. Which they think has some power to transcend human nature.

Yup. You all hit on something right there... All the attention that seems to continue to focus on Zimmerman is indeed done by the left to get minorities to vote in the off year election which won't have the Obama draw....
The race card is going to be played for the next year at a very loud and persistent beat.
Tingles to the 10th power. A dog whistle at every turn.

Well..., I-16 and I-75 were not completed until the mid 70's. Up until then, people often traveled back and forth between Savannah and Atlanta on the train, The Nancy Hanks. Ladies often made day trips to Atlanta for shopping, as it left in the morning, and returned in the evening.
Oh, and FWIW, Nancy Hanks was Abe Lincoln's mother.

Stiff inner labia and all that, old chap.

I know who Nancy Hanks was. Are you aware there was a train that ran from downtown Savannah to Tybee Island until the great hurricane of 18-something. Businessmen used to hop the train to visit their families on Tybee for the weekends. Until most everyone was drowned, and the tracks destroyed.
Now the old tracks are (a portion of) a Rails-to-Trails hiking and biking path.

If you grasp how to pay bills, sound principles of accounting and budgeting, and understand the profit motive you're ahead of the game WRT many underclassmen in college. That is not hyperbole or false indulgence. I'd peg the value of education for practical living by the 10th grade to have peaked in this nation in the era of 1962-1977 depending on region.
There is a systemic and willful collusion to convince the modern student that the most important things they can grasp are Meteorology as deity, social justice doctrine, and IT. Children lucky enough to have innate gifts in math and science will be encouraged to use those gifts to "change the world." Absent that a child must be lucky enough to have one or more dedicated teachers to breathe a love of learning into them.
Classical Literature and Civics to foster a genuine sense of nation are dead, they willfully teach economic falsehood without counter example as a cornerstone of what little analysis of social structure and representative government theory they instill. My grandfather's generation was made to read Roger's Rules of Order and Common Sense. My father's education inasmuch as he availed himself was also well versed in understanding his role and duty as a US citizen.
Scholarship is not a destination, nor a closed club inasmuch as a path and personal avocation. This forum at its best is a valuable tool for those who need a pool of diverse experience to plumb their own walk on the various paths. I've never considered you a shoddy read.
Keep walking it, your will to learn is a tool of survival against prideful ignorance.

sven

This is a big school of thought on the left nowadays: people who fled prog-controlled cities to the suburbs are what actually caused the cities to fail (because it's never the progs' fault), and so it's only fair for cities to be able to levy taxes on the surrounding suburbs. (There's a significant racialist component to how some lefty "thinkers" discuss this, of course, but clearly we won't be going into that aspect here).

You can't escape it, the MSM never shuts up about it and I have seen too many otherwise good people of all stripes indulge in the cult of victimology that is going on.
It is like some bizzaro universe morphing of the "union rules" mentality wherein some protected class or the other tries to maximize their own gain gaming some perverted games dynamic on the back of creating a whole and the subsumal of others efforts.
I am ashamed that my sincere and honest analysis of where we are heading *is* telling me that this is going to be aimed at me and male descendants barring my son or his down the line in fact interbreeding with a minority.
This is as repelllant a "normal" to me as my being granted "mighty whitey super powers" would be and should be held by people of other stripes.

Let's say for a moment that the Republicans were clever and had ideas.
Republicans would be drafting an economic proposal, a grand plan, to save an American city, say, Detroit. They would present this proposal as an alternative to the Democrats' push for Amnesty.
Here's what would happen next: the Democrats would blow it off. The next move would be the Republicans' move: Force the Democrats to explain to their loyal base why they don't really care about them.
Finally, the Republicans sit back and watch. And laugh.
That's how politics are done.

One of the measures that people apply to another person is -- Would I want to sit down and have a few beers with this person? That's a measure of character, per US standards.
Even TFG knows about this; witness the Gates/cop/TFG meeting that he pulled off including beers on the table. Romney by his religion would forever be forbidden from this simple ritual.

I'd contend that if you mix the cocktail well enough you blend to the point that it casn be argued there's a "new norm". Of course, that does bring up that as the Twilight Zone episode on masks once showed "new normative" will at some point schism and you will subdivide into units in a greater tribe. Part of me wonders if Brazil is not the exception that largely proves the rule?
To an untrained eye there are "three" races at play in Brazil but the Brazilians consider themselves 6 or ten "types" IIRC the reading and interaction with Brazilians is more than a decade old and I fear as I age my memory is finally going fuzzy on details at times.
The matter was an issue of interest for me, because the boy was more likely to have been 1/2 Viet or Khmer than white had I not switched back to my Alma Mater and courted my wife.
At any rate if I am in the ONT I will post SFW/NSFW/and Semi SFW pics of Brazilians...
of course as I reminded Giam my Vietnamese girlfriend once, "darling you're already a mix of Vietnamese, Chinese, and French."

Amen to that. When I moved to NC five years ago, I thought I'd finally be living in a "red state". But between massive voter registration among the state's minority population and the influx of people from the northeast, we're now "purple". Two elections ago, this place was dead red. I think GWB took it by 15 points or something in 2004.
Now, I am one of the people who left NY for greener pastures, but for the life of me, if I see one more person from Long Island telling me how they love the low taxes and low crime, yet voting for the same damn party that gave them all the "comforts" of home in NY, I'm gonna scream.
Why is it so hard to see? Look at Detroit. Look at California. 60 years ago, they were at the leading edge of American ingenuity and the most successful areas of the country. 60 years of communist (lets be clear) control, and they're both stinking cesspools. I know the media pumps the pro-blue message, but at some point, who are you going to believe? Me or your lying eyes?

The American experiment ideally was to be an exercise in transcending the bonds of biology and having a tribe based on adherence to Lockeian based ideals.
That we did not always live up to that is tragic, that we are empowering people who reject the enterprise entire is maddening.
Love Locke, hate Marx and find your niche and do right by your people.
I have yet to have that notion properly destroyed by anyone and I do strive to live up to it.
That I am in raw anger is because I am terrified our generation is the dying gasp of the enlightenment

The reference to Fawlty Towers was a feeble attempt to address the "race issues" that are being both, thought and not talked about.
Strong feelings on both sides, promoted by the regime that wants to divide and conquer.
The British / German divide was not that large, through intermarriage and invasion ( Angles, Saxons, Jutes).
The American version is much more complex.

Dereliction of duty? Not even close. They were active agents in the Democrat Election machine, and they still are.
The problem is that the fiction is still widespread that the media people have a "duty."
They are partisan soldiers in the army of socialism. They are propaganda agents.

I don't believe in the 'accidental paycheck theory.' All those people were paid to do what they did. Whoever keeps authorizing those paychecks is doing so on purpose and with knowledge of what they are buying.
To me, that makes the highest probability explanation == 'the folks who own our politicians own the media.'
It is a nationwide stupidity test and it starts with someone taking a paycheck from a big corporation standing in front of a camera telling us all how they are: "for the little guy," and "out to protect you from big business." We are still flunking the test.
Hell, even if they don't succeed in telling people what to think, they succeed in telling people what to thing about -- such as a recent murder case that you are required to form an opinion about.

I may steal that line about a tribe arranged around Lockean ideals. I don't think I've ever heard it put better.
As to Detroit Syndrome (I think we should rename it... Stockholm, that old school. We new school. Our generation.), I wonder if it isn't anything short of a mental condition. These people essentially deny reality. It's not as if they can say, "well, my city/state's problems were caused by this, it's different" - almost every major city in America has been plagued by this disease, and it's always the same. Race baiting, marxist social policies, pitting police against citizens, pitting citizens against businesses. Yet they don't see. Like children who just want what they want and they don't care for the cost.

MY GOD how I cried inside when he never landed blows on the dysfunction of our industrial base and tied it into the evangelical EPA.
They're weak sooth they're weak and not because they are candy assed people and I am a Nietzchean God....
if the RINOs never you know attract the moderate democrats inasmuch as they may exist and never assert the absolute superiority of the American system as practiced prior to FDR how will we ever convince those people who never saw the "fully operational power of a functioning ARSENAL OF DEMOCRACY! industrial base there are alternatives?
How hard is it to look into the camera take the arrows and say, "look I am not gonna bullshit you that I can outgive this guy to you, I can't he'll write checks our great grandkids will have to cash but I can say I will empower you to run as hard and as far as you can......
if you don't believe in me I assure you I have total faith in you once freed of the illusory gains in minimum wage or pretending we are responsible with a 1/4 of what you earn to do mighty things.
I will die missing Reagan.....not because of the mythical Zombie man...
I know as a child I felt him look at me through that TV and say with his words and eyes "I love America and I love you and I know that the common American unfettered does MIGHTY THINGS!"
I miss him so much.

sven, someone told Mitt Romney it was a good idea to formulate and present a 59-point plan.
Someone advised Romney to pick Paul Ryan.
Someone told Romney to not bring up Cash For Clunkers or Solyndra.
Someone advised Romney not to bring up gas and unemployment.
Someone advised Romney to take a knee after the first debate and coast until election day.
I think if we scratch that someone an Obama voter will be revealed.
