Depressing Facts About America
— Ace

This guy keeps misspelling "America" as "Detroit," which seems odd, because they're not really even that close.

But keep in mind, he means America.

WR Mead wrote about this today, under the headline "Obama to Detroit: Drop Dead."

This is where blue governance has brought Detroit in the end: not even a liberal Democratic administration will step in to save the pensions of thousands of public workers and African Americans, condemning countless innocents to having their pensions and health benefits gutted in bankruptcy court.

...

Detroit has been spending on average $100 million more than it has taken in for each of the past five years. The cityÂ’s $11 billion in unsecured debt includes $6 billion in health and other retirement benefits and $3 billion in retiree pensions for its 20,000 city pensioners, who are slated to receive less than 10 percent of what they were promised...

And now DetroitÂ’s desperate request for a bailout has been turned down by the Obama White House.

Progressive politicians, wonks, and activists can only blame big corporations and other liberal bogeymen for so long. The truth is that corrupt machine politics in a one-party system devoted to the blue social model wrecked an entire city and thousands of lives beyond repair. The sooner blues come to terms with this reality, the greater chance other cities will have of avoiding DetroitÂ’s fate.

But we won't: ObamaCare is Detroit.

The media wants to talk a bunch about the Zimmerman case and have "national conversations" about lessons we need to learn from a 45-second confrontation involving two people.

Notice they don't want to have national conversations about what lessons we can learn from 51 years of True Blue Democratic administration in Detroit.

Incidentally, today's game on Twitter is retweeting all the liberals and liberal groups who tweeted about Romney saying "Let Detroit go bankrupt" before the election.

That last link via @mamaswati.

Blues come to terms with reality. Hmph. That'll be something.

The reality is that they will not, and that there will consequently be more Detroits.

My money is on Shitcargo as the next blue city to fail.

Hopefully this will not happen until after Obama is out of office. He has no longstanding ties to Detroit, but he certainly does to the Windy City, and as we all know, everything is about him all of the time, nonstop.

yes. conversations on race.  Below a quote from a noted racist, by todays standards

"There is another class of colored people who make a business of keeping the troubles, the wrongs, and the hardships of the black race before the public. Having learned that they are able to make a living out of their troubles, they have grown into the settled habit of advertising their wrongs — partly because they want sympathy and partly because it pays. Some of these people do not want the black to lose his grievances, because they do not want to lose their jobs."

"I am afraid that there is a certain class of race-problem solvers who don't want the patient to get well, because as long as the disease holds out they have not only an easy means of making a living, but also an easy medium through which to make themselves prominent before the public."

Who said this?

It's more than just the Blue Social - Political model.

It's the deliberate effort of African American  Democrat politicians to create a black majority, black run city, that they would rule and dominate.

The expected to be rich and powerful, ruling the manufacturing metropolis of Detroit.  A new mecca of political power for African Americans.  Coleman Young said in so many words over 40 years ago.

And it has all come true, except the part about being rich and powerful.  Because a lot of the automobile manufacturing and associated companies, with the good-paying blue collar jobs got up and left.  They moved to the suburbs, out in the country or somewhere else in America, Canada or Mexico.  And took their tax receipts with them.  Imagine that.

This new mecca of Detroit is a paradigm of the Inner City African American Ideal.  Kind of a tattered version of the Emerald City in Oz.  Where street gangs roam, where thousands of vacant houses fall into disrepair. Where thousands are on welfare or unemployment.  The population is half of what it was 40 years ago.  The people and the jobs are gone. Just a husk of a burned out city remains. The same thing has happened in  my hometown of Dayton, Ohio.  Just on a smaller scale.

They should build a statue to Coleman Young and dedicate the future of Detroit to him.  But they probably couldn't afford it.

Fascinating, the property tax on a house in Detroit (per ace's article) worth 50k is higher than my house assed at 200k.

Also, why is DC's Property tax so low? Extrapolating out, their tax rate is about 1/3 of mine and to be honest, I didn't think mine was that high.

38 It ain't rocket surgery: Paying people not to work is nuts. It doesn't make economic sense. Promises of a cozy retirement are all future liability, but the expectation is good pay NOW, too. If they want to be paid in the future when they won't be doing work for the check, then they have to sacrifice some now. We don't view it as a savings plan, we view it as a benefit on top of salary.

OK.

So, looking at the ripple effect here.

Detroit goes bust, gets 0 bailout (perhaps? I thought that was a big if, but apparently not.)

I see IL going next (although IIRC there's some potential pitfalls over states going broke.)

Meanwhile, more cities/counties in CA will go belly up as well (especially as, I am to understand, the jobs are pulling out.)

Finally, in local effect, I expect that within 5 years STL city will also declare bankruptcy.  Which I think, overall is a good thing.  The county needs to pull them in to get them under control (financially mostly) but cannot do it unless it's on the county's term, which requires a bankruptcy.

Then and only then can the mess start to get cleaned up. (I think STL city has about 5 more years until it's income tax on all employees working or living in the city sundowns, which is when the hell really breaks loose.)

68 So I said I was betting on Shitcargo as the next large (or formerly large) failed city.

It won't be limited to those. There will be a large number of midsize cities, Cleveland-sized cities, that are also going to fail.

And then there will be scattered failed small municipalities everywhere, a lot of which aren't even big enough for there to be much consciousness of them outside the immediate area. Slumburbia.

And these failed places will essentially stay failed, because there just is not any remaining financial capability in the rest of the country to underwrite rehabilitating all of these busted urbs.

70 I have an idea:

Do a study of a large sample of Americans of a certain generation, say around 50 years old. Ask them to give a detailed account of the places they lived their entire life. Compare those locations to the dominant party in power at the time.  With the local government party in power rating higher than state party. Then run correlation against the income level of the people in the study. Are people at the higher end of the income distribution more likely to have lived under conservative local governments then those who lived most of their lives under Democrat dominated government?

Missus Muldoon and I were talking this morning about the parallel between the jihadi problem and black culture in America (in the wake of the Zimmerman verdict).  It seems that until the bulk of mainstream blacks are willing to disavow the thug actions of the extremists rather than a knee-jerk defense as their default position, it is hard to envision an America where we will be judged on the content of our character rather than the color of our skin.  Much like waiting for 'moderate' muslims to speak out against jihadis.   Is this a false construct?

101 >>>I think I just got banned from a certain topic permanently, or I didn't her an "until".

let's make it permanently.  It's not as if you're saying something Unexpected and New.  I get it, blacks are stupid savages and ruin everything they touch.  Is that about it?  Are you done with your little racial victory dance or would you like to add more to that?

Do you have anything of your own you can be proud of besides your white skin?

See, apart from the racial ugliness, this is the other part of racism that's so repellent: the sad notion that there are people out there whose sense of value consists only of their skin color.  They sort of throw their ropes behind the S. S. White and let the Big White Boat pull them along in the water.

I think it's pathetic that a fucking guy can be so proud of being white.  Is that all you got going on for you?

And frankly, let's follow this logic a bit:  given that white people have accomplished a hell of a fucking lot, how pathetic is that a white guy chooses to make his mere Whiteness his fucking source of pride?

Doesn't that sort of make you a free-riding n*gger on the rest of us, dude?  To put it into your sort of language?

Okay once again, because you guys don't seem to get this:

YOU ARE REPELLENT.  YOU REPEL PEOPLE. WE DO NOT SECRETLY AGREE WITH YOU.  WE CONDESCEND TO REMAIN SILENT, HOPING YOU WILL GET IT OUT OF YOUR SYSTEM AND MOVE ON AND SAVE US THE SOCIAL EMBARRASSMENT OF INTERVENTIONS LIKE THIS.

Okay you got that now?  Since you're just being honest about race, I'll do you the favor and be honest right back.  THAT'S what we really think.

So the next time you want to pop off, and you think you're earning Secret Silent Nod Hero Points for your shit-- NO.  You sound like low-class gutter-dwelling degenerates whose only achievement is having been born to a white mother and now you're riding that GLORY to the grave.

People are pathetic for clinging to glory years of high school.

How about those who cling the glory of their mere birth?

If I get to to decide who's "White," myself, personally, I toss out all the fucking deadweight welfare cases whose only contribution is an accident of their birth.

128 Very important to note that Detroit's decline commenced once it became a "union city." It is a perfect "ground zero" illustration of what happens to a city when it embraces unions and forsakes competition and innovation in the name of social guarantees. 136 The Left calls it "white flight" when productive whites flee a failing crime-ridden city like Detroit. Goal is to somehow shame them into staying. Didn't work of course since they were fleeing mainly due to crime -- you aren't going to be able to shame people into putting their children at risk of violent crime. Of course, in Detroit first it was "white" flight but quickly it became everybody flight. The Left hasn't invented a new Shame Word to describe productive middle class blacks who flee crime, corruption, and onerous taxation. I half-expect them to call it Uncle Tom Flight or something horrible.

No, it's not a false construct, S. Muldoon.  I had the exact same conversation with someone else the other day.  I think the root of the problem among the majority of blacks, as with radical Islam, is a toxic combination of poverty, the destruction of  the public education system esp in the inner city,   and the indoctrination provided by the media.

140 talking about your racial obsessions is like talking about your sexual obsessions:  It is socially embarrassing for the listener, who is put into the awkward position of either having to take a socially-awkward step of repudiating someone publicly, or else remain silent, and by implication endorse and tolerate the talk.

It is EMBARRASSING for the rest of us.  You are free-riding on the respectable company people make here. You are USING and ENJOYING that respectable company, but then undermining it, stealing from it, vandalizing it.

Because people don't wish to be embarrassed and don't wish to take the socially-horrifying step of calling out a fucking weirdo, I'll take the hit and do it my damn self.

If you're going to embarrass us, I'll embarrass you back.  Okay?  Sound fair?  Otherwise you're just a Taker, not a Maker, taking a shit in a well-maintained public area and then calling yourself proper for doing so because you're White so of course that particular shit was Classy and somehow linked to Leonardo DaVinci by the White Gene.

170 99 Seamus Muldoon,

Sadly the devolution of work ethic and drive and understanding of the mechanism and structures of economics and production are dying across the spectrum of America.

Our entire culture needs a kick in the butt.

I thank the NEA with an assist from to too many parents and the inability of those of us versed in the system as it worked to get past the noise machine of the media.

There's plenty enough fail to go around, add in my personal feelings of shame at my not hanging in there to at least have a try at being a voice in the academy and....as I said plenty of blame to go around.

Sometimes people sound pretty low-class to me and I don't say so, because that sort of statement is generally wildly out of bounds.  There is a social rule that you avoid saying something truly derogatory.

Okay, but then I hit them with some HONESTY and REAL-NESS back and all of a sudden, the butthurt.  All of a sudden they're big believers in the social rules that usually keep conversation inoffensive and polite.

Logistics is still a combination of muscle and motor powered.  The problem is and it is again across the spectrum that as the older hard pros in the field are retiring they are being replaced with less driven individuals and to a degree you can't simply hire to replace the holes in productivity.  There are practical limits to the time and motion that can be exerted space wise on a logistical operation and if a body is not meeting baseline methodology output of sorting, loading, or transition per man hour the bottom line suffers.

189 70 I have an idea:

Do a study of a large sample of Americans of a
certain generation, say around 50 years old. Ask them to give a detailed
account of the places they lived their entire life. Compare those
locations to the dominant party in power at the time. With the local
government party in power rating higher than state party. Then run correlation
against the income level of the people in the study. Are people at the higher end of the income distribution more likely to have lived under conservative local governments then those who lived most of their lives under Democrat dominated government?

Yeah I imagine if it was a problem with just Detroit the city, it would have been fixed a while ago. I'm sure there are plenty of union workers of Detroit who don't actually live in the city but in the metro area. This is true of most cops, firefighters, govt. employees that work in L.A. but don't actually live in L.A. city, they live in L.A. county or just outside of it. I'm sure many of those metro areas are solidly blue.

Exactly. This is the point I have tried hardest to get through the heads of lefties of my acquaintance, and with the least success. If Organization A proposes to take money from person B, and give it to Person C, the motivation is not compassion for C, but the power and money which comes to Organization A, from being in charge of the transfer, and taking the skim.

People will believe it just fine until you tell them that Organization A is the Government. Which they think has some power to transcend human nature.

265 Obama and the Left started the GZ prosecution disaster to gin up the black vote and anti-white race hatred, but once it got into the courts it was mostly out of their control. At this stage they are riding the tiger by the tail -- sometimes amping up race-hate, other times tamping it down. They aren't in control any longer. As much as I believe Obama and Holder are racists and do want to hurt white people for the sins of the past -- they are also smart enough politicians that they don't really want to have the Black Panthers be the face of the Democrat Party. At this stage nobody is in control of the GZ aftermath.

283 It's incredibly stupid to put this in just black and white racial terms.  If White Pride folks think, for example, America can't learn something from Chinese history, they show their ignorance.  The period of hegemony of America --or the West as a whole, for that matter-- is a catnap compared to the long history of Chinese civilization.  And focusing on ethnicity short-changes the millennia of successive invasions, then absorption, of various peoples.  Less than one and a half centuries ago, China was a declining power in relative and absolute terms and was even battling a nasty Islamic rebellion, that after the bloodiest rebellion in history.  Any American of any race is a fool who thinks the States are immune to those kinds of historical forces.

309 278 epobirs,

If you grasp how to pay bills, sound principles of accounting and budgeting, and understand the profit motive you're ahead of the game WRT many underclassmen in college.  That is not hyperbole or false indulgence.  I'd peg the value of education for practical living by the 10th grade to have peaked in this nation in the era of 1962-1977 depending on region.

There is a systemic and willful collusion to convince the modern student that the most important things they can grasp are Meteorology as deity, social justice doctrine, and IT.  Children lucky enough to have innate gifts in math and science will be encouraged to use those gifts to "change the world."  Absent that a child must be lucky enough to have one or more dedicated teachers to breathe a love of learning into them.

Classical Literature and Civics to foster a genuine sense of nation are dead, they willfully teach economic falsehood without counter example as a cornerstone of what little analysis of social structure and representative government theory they instill.  My grandfather's generation was made to read Roger's Rules of Order and Common Sense.  My father's education inasmuch as he availed himself was also well versed in understanding his role and duty as a US citizen.

Scholarship is not a destination, nor a closed club inasmuch as a path and personal avocation.  This forum at its best is a valuable tool for those who need a pool of diverse experience to plumb their own walk on the various paths.  I've never considered you a shoddy read.

Keep walking it, your will to learn is a tool of survival against prideful ignorance.

regards,
sven

317 This is what happens when you trust the government to run everything. Politicians pander to the "I want it now and tomorrow" mentality, and having the seemingly endless resources of taxes and borrowable money at their disposal, try to provide everything with no regard to the cost. But eventually the taxes crush or drive away the producers, and the income loss makes it impossible to service existing loans or service new ones. Having been unconstrained by economic realities, and suddenly facing them, they turn to a small cabal of yes-men that call themselves experts, who promise inventive new ways of having your cake and eating it too. These people are handsomely paid, and their suggestions keep the floundering system afloat a little while longer, but the core problem is never addressed, their solutions are temporary and destructive and the ruin reaches a point of completion that it never otherwise could. There is a simple truth that underlies all of this: You shouldn't buy what you can't afford, and if you have to borrow money to have it, it should be something you can realistically pay off.

321 283 Logprof,

Well said, in some of my "drunken monkey style" postings I pointed out how hard civilization is and the inherent strength of will to preserve it in the Chinese.

Intellect and will are not in the skin, they are in our species ideally and I reject the notion that there is an innate superiority or an inherent flaw in any human being barring moral, physical, or social degeneracy.

and I MEAN that

I love mankind warts and all, and I don't think we can be perfected but I sure as hell know that we are better than THIS.

I think you may have a valid point here. Well, Thomas Sowell talks about race in some of his books, but it's basically a necessary defensive maneuver, so I think he gets an exemption. Thinking about the consequence of the race focus you're talking about doesn't really count.

This is a big school of thought on the left nowadays: people who fled prog-controlled cities to the suburbs are what actually caused the cities to fail (because it's never the progs' fault), and so it's only fair for cities to be able to levy taxes on the surrounding suburbs.  (There's a significant racialist component to how some lefty "thinkers" discuss this, of course, but clearly we won't be going into that aspect here).

China had several thousand years of social and technological stagnation. This is why European powers were eventually able to dominate it. They went from backwards and beneath the dignity of China's recognition to being able to dominate it. They moved forward, while China remained stagnant. Memes are forces on par with tribes and races. Islam is a prime example of this. It is a very powerful meme. The American Meme was also very powerful, but it has become undone by it's own success.

It's a good point, but I will say and not offering it as an excuse and feeling sincere shame at feeling this way I cannot escape the noise and I am and I really am running out of arguments not to indulge in the tribalism the very SYSTEM sworn to safeguard against institutional racism indulges in.

You can't escape it, the MSM never shuts up about it and I have seen too many otherwise good people of all stripes indulge in the cult of victimology that is going on.

It is like some bizzaro universe morphing of the "union rules" mentality wherein some protected class or the other tries to maximize their own gain gaming some perverted games dynamic on the back of creating a whole and the subsumal of others efforts.

I am ashamed that my sincere and honest analysis of where we are heading *is* telling me that this is going to be aimed at me and male descendants barring my son or his down the line in fact interbreeding with a minority.

This is as repelllant a "normal" to me as my being granted "mighty whitey super powers" would be and should be held by people of other stripes.

I don't have an answer and I am scared of my questions in the wake of TrayvonaThon and "you can't have an intellectual and political loathing of THIS man unless it is race based."

Let's say for a moment that the Republicans were clever and had ideas.

Republicans would be drafting an economic proposal, a grand plan, to save an American city, say, Detroit. They would present this proposal as an alternative to the Democrats' push for Amnesty.

Here's what would happen next: the Democrats would blow it off. The next move would be the Republicans' move: Force the Democrats to explain to their loyal base why they don't really care about them.

Finally, the Republicans sit back and watch. And laugh.

That's how politics are done.

One of the measures that people apply to another person is -- Would I want to sit down and have a few beers with this person? That's a measure of character, per US standards.

Even TFG knows about this; witness the Gates/cop/TFG meeting that he pulled off including beers on the table. Romney by his religion would forever be forbidden from this simple ritual.

398 380 Flatbush Joe,

I'd contend that if you mix the cocktail well enough you blend to the point that it casn be argued there's a "new norm".  Of course, that does bring up that as the Twilight Zone episode on masks once showed "new normative" will at some point schism and you will subdivide into units in a greater tribe.  Part of me wonders if Brazil is not the exception that largely proves the rule?

To an untrained eye there are "three" races at play in Brazil but the Brazilians consider themselves 6 or ten "types" IIRC the reading and interaction with Brazilians is more than a decade old and I fear as I age my memory is finally going fuzzy on details at times.

The matter was an issue of interest for me, because the boy was more likely to have been 1/2 Viet or Khmer than white had I not switched back to my Alma Mater and courted my wife.

At any rate if I am in the ONT I will post SFW/NSFW/and Semi SFW pics of Brazilians...

of course as I reminded Giam my Vietnamese girlfriend once, "darling you're already a mix of Vietnamese, Chinese, and French."

399 That apocryphal line about Catherine the Great was untrue, she did have long standing relationships notably with Potemkin, who she was married to, at one point, the future rebel leader of  Poland, Poniatowski, and a few others, but nothing of what has been alleged, similar things were said of Marie Antoinette, and even Catherine Sforza, but those were just allegations,

They moved forward, while China remained stagnant.

401 There's great scientific work being done today unraveling the genetic sub-populations (ethnic groups) and evolutionary history of humanity. And ethnic group is just a large extended family. And you can zoom in and out. So there are no exact boundaries. They are always fuzzy and overlap. But they are real. DNA tests are getting more and more accurate. We're getting to the point where a DNA test can tell you not just that you are swedish -- but which village your ancestors are from. Really great work being done in the field these days.

Amen to that. When I moved to NC five years ago, I thought I'd finally be living in a "red state". But between massive voter registration among the state's minority population and the influx of people from the northeast, we're now "purple". Two elections ago, this place was dead red. I think GWB took it by 15 points or something in 2004.

Now, I am one of the people who left NY for greener pastures, but for the life of me, if I see one more person from Long Island telling me how they love the low taxes and low crime, yet voting for the same damn party that gave them all the "comforts" of home in NY, I'm gonna scream.

Why is it so hard to see? Look at Detroit. Look at California. 60 years ago, they were at the leading edge of American ingenuity and the most successful areas of the country. 60 years of communist (lets be clear) control, and they're both stinking cesspools. I know the media pumps the pro-blue message, but at some point, who are you going to believe? Me or your lying eyes?

The reference to Fawlty Towers was a feeble attempt to address the "race issues" that are being both, thought and not talked about.

Strong feelings on both sides, promoted by the regime that wants to divide and conquer.

The British / German divide was not that large, through intermarriage and invasion ( Angles, Saxons, Jutes).

The American version is much more complex.

Clearly something went wrong. I feel bad for anybody who loses a kid, but if you looked at the case and you don't make it -- there was some racial profiling, no question about it. But something happened that changed the dynamic of that night, and I know -- that's probably not a popular opinion among most people but just looking at the evidence I agreed with the verdict. I just feel bad because I don't like when race gets out in the media because I don't think the media has a pure heart, as I call it. There are very few people have a pure heart when it comes to race. Racism is wrong in any, shape, form -- a lot of black people are racist too. I think sometimes when people talk about racism, they say only white people are racist. There are a lot of black people who are racist. I don't like when it gets out there in the media because I don't think the media has clean hands.

422 This afternoon, the Detroit Emergency Manager, and the Governor of Michigan filed a Bankruptcy petition at 4:06. At 4:11, the Detroit pension fund managers asked a court in Ingham county michigan for a temporary restraining order against the EM filing, which was five minutes too late. Instead, the court issued a restraining order against any further proceedings in the bankruptcy filing. How does a non bankruptcy judge now interfere with a bankruptcy proceeding? I"m sorry the pensioners and current Detroit employees are looking at possibly losing some of their pension, but why should everyone else in the Detroit mess have to lose and not them? Considering that for years, Detroit has elected over and over the same Democrat politicians who robbed the city and had parties at the Mayors mansion, had huge staffs, free cars, etc. they need not be shocked that the party is now over. Dave Bing, the current mayor has been the one exception, and he couldn't get any kind of cooperation to turn Detroit around from the corrupt city council. Remember the council woman who said last year that there should be some kind of quid pro quo from Obama for the city's help in electing him? That Mayor Coleman 'brought home the bacon". Hope these pensioners remember the corrupt scuzballs they elected when they wonder what happened to their city.

Posted by: The Chicken at July 18, 2013 05:55 PM (3VBXw)

431 Race is the bugbear of a small mind. If you've gotten to the point where you don't ever think about it until somebody else brings it up, that reflects well on you. You're not a racist and aren't renting brainspace to any sort of prejudice. There are a lot more important things to think about than the colors of other people's skins. Posted by: Cato But when people embrace a social pathology based on identity politics, race can become a marker of those pathologies. The problem is not the color of skin, type of hair or other physical identifiers. It is the willful embrace of political and social ideas that are self - destructive, and demanding that others of the same ethnic or social identity follow those ideas or be ostracized. It is not that complicated. It is a type of tribal identity, which has been antithetical to the idea of what we thought America is about. Ethnic or identity politics is as old as America, though, and people still love identity politics. They love to embrace the little symbols that set themselves and their own group apart. Sometimes it is relatively harmless, sometimes it is crushingly devastating. Sometimes it is really just stupid. The "leaders" of any identity political group are in it for the money, prestige (given by their group) and power. They encourage and profit by identity politics. The followers think they get something for all this, but usually they just get used, when the movement they attach themselves to has destructive pathologies that ruin those who follow. Human beings, regardless of the color of their skin, are CAPABLE of being rational, but this has really not been the general nature of mankind in its history. The United States has had spells of rationality and spells of irrationality. When the politics remained limited, and people actually thought of themselves as generally "free", the country (on the whole) prospered. When politics came to dominate more aspects of everyday life, prosperity began to disappear. Wishing something to be true and defying what is real is not going to work out, no matter who practices it and no matter what the color of their skin. Just like calling yourself "Cato" on the internet doesn't make you a historical Roman figure. It's just a nic you invented to make a comment. It's not real.

As to Detroit Syndrome (I think we should rename it... Stockholm, that old school. We new school. Our generation.), I wonder if it isn't anything short of a mental condition. These people essentially deny reality. It's not as if they can say, "well, my city/state's problems were caused by this, it's different" - almost every major city in America has been plagued by this disease, and it's always the same. Race baiting, marxist social policies, pitting police against citizens, pitting citizens against businesses. Yet they don't see. Like children who just want what they want and they don't care for the cost.

I miss him so much. Posted by: sven10077@sven10077 at July 18, 2013 09:57 PM (LRFds) Dude, you are writing poetry tonight! Very moving stuff.

459 our way of life will die if the masses don't relearn what makes us "us." Posted by: sven10077@sven10077 at July 18, 2013 10:00 PM (LRFds) America is not a "place" nor is it a "tribe." It is a set of ideas that are worthy of a civilized nation.

460 I can always tell when a new post is up. I come to the end of a thread to find several sequential comments from myself.

461 "Continuous and fuzzy *IS* the most accurate description of the world." There are multiple continuous fuzzy maps. They are not always strictly emergent from the phenomena. There can be a history dependence. The categories "cup" and "mug" are just - different - in French and English. "Saudade" in Portuguese is said to be untranslatable (ht Hoyt). Just sayin'

462 It's not the skin color, it's the culture. But if most of a group of people with the same skin color insist on either participating in or standing up for a bad culture, they are going to be associated with it. Noticing that most of them are doing so is not racism. Racism is hating a race and everyone who is a member of it no matter what they do. Race relations used to be going in the right direction, "not color of skin but content of character". Leftists ruined it.

464 Late to the party, but this is the MAGNITUDE of what we've LOST.

Here's a clip of the gigantic Ford River Rouge plant in the 1930s -- by far the biggest in the world. You youngsters should see it to get the magnitude of the destruction that has brought all this down.

466 Haven't read this thread yet but I said the day Obama got elected...Welcome to Detroit. He's the logical outcome of ...we've already lived it here. It's your future America. You should have cared about appeasing the marxist/union/affirmative action gods. You should have cared about letting a guy without a birth certificate into the oval office. Chicago is Detroit about 40 years ago and has nothing Detroit (city not suburbs).

Posted by: Steve Miller at July 18, 2013 07:27 PM (01sLu)

467 Darn sock. Anyway. Obama is just a classier (scary I know) version Kwame Kilpatrick or Coleman Young but with a gay, marxist, foreigner's touch.

469 Ugh, we're coming up on the 1 year anniversary of the Aurora gun shooting, and Bloomberg's Mayors Against Gun Violence has hired at least one of the survivors. Local news just reported they will be holding a "national media event." The victim even went so far as to say that it was rude that a pro-gun organization planned to be there to counter his statements, because victims of gun violence "need to be respected". In other words, I'm a victim so sit down  and STFU, you guys.

470 "This guy keeps misspelling "America" as "Detroit," which seems odd, because they're not really even that close." Ah, but it is. This is the path America is on. I'm an optimist but don't be fooled. These are treacherous times. Detroit is nothing but a joke now but it used (to be in it's time) a power house. Literally, a power house. It's decline was unthinkable just a very short time ago (50 years). It is the poster child. Heed the warnings.

472 Heh, are you one of the trolls here? If I had a dime for every article I've read like that I'd be very rich. Literally, very rich. Detroit ultimately has a future (because American land of any type still has some value) but after some type of ...(liberals head explode here)...it's not even close yet. Detroit has some inherently positive features (rivers) but the house-cleaning is going to be epic if it's to return to it's former glory but that's a pipe dream with people like you. Too bad you don't know it.

474 Wow @ Ace #57. Until you are standing in the wreckage of Detroit like conditions you can stand on your little liberal-like faux-conservative rock. You are the perfect example of how an Obama (not black person) but an Obama character made it illegally into the White House. You better go back and make sure you lynched the white guy...Al Sharpton or Geraldo might call you out. No wonder you are so depressed. You base your opinions on what is politically expedient. Not what is truthful.

478 @173 "Commuter tax is one attempt. But in Detroit the people and jobs moved to the suburb. How do you tax that if you are Detroit? Most of the people in "Detroit" don't actually live or work in Detroit proper." Ever heard of metro-water systems? Ever heard of Section 8? Ever heard of Metro-Buses? It's like cable stations. Anyone who has cable pays for Oprah and Bill Maher even if they don't want to. The suburbs and state wind up paying for the area's infrastructure. The fact that the city-proper finally went bankrupt is astounding. It's been a slow train wreck for years and years. For 40 years, the local news has been an Obama, Maxine Waters, Elijah Cummings, John Connolly, Black panthers marathon/parade of .... But Ace, knows better and would like to lecture just like a good little, obedient, white guilt liberal. Oops, I think I've embarrassed him. It's your future America. Don't kid yourselves. It never ends.

Posted by: Micihgan and Oiho at July 19, 2013 12:48 AM (01sLu)

479 "It's been a slow -40 year train wreck." But as Ace points out it would be racist of me to notice and I certainly don't want to embarrass him so I denounce myself.

480 "The cityÂ’s $11 billion in unsecured debt includes $6 billion in health and other retirement benefits and $3 billion in retiree pensions for its 20,000 city pensioners, who are slated to receive less than 10 percent of what they were promised..." I'd like to know just how many of Detroit's 20,000 retirees chose to retire in Detroit. I think a big part of Detroit's problem was caused by mismanagement so bad that city retirees fled the city shortly after retiring. That eroded the tax base, leading to hemorrhaging deficits as the city paid its retirees to live in safer, cheaper, competently managed locales.

482 Ace @192 "I'm just having the Honest Discussion about Racists that Racists want to have about blacks." Nice. Built-in-reverse-race card. You can't lose. Head's up Vegas, Ace is on the way. Oh, wait that might be a be a bit to trashy and low class for you.

483 "If we're being totally honest, and throwing off the bounds of polite conversation, well, these are the Honest, Real Conversations we're going to have to have." "Honesty and Realness aren't a one-way street, guys. That's a true for you as it is for Holder." You're kidding, right? Throw in some platitudes and cliches about race and homosexual marriage and you can feel real good and all.
