Detroit Files For Chapter 9 Bankruptcy
— Pixy Misa

It's the largest municipal bankruptcy in US history.

You can read more about it here.

The Motor City faces $20 billion of long-term liabilities. The Wall Street Journal's Matt Dillon says those holding onto $11 billion in unsecured debt are basically staring into the abyss, facing the prospect of getting next to nothing from the city's obligations.

The pension funds want to block Orr's attempt to drastically reduce the amount of benefits owed to current and former city workers.

Apropos of nothing, the last time Detroit had a Republican Mayor was 51 years ago.

[Update] In completely unrelated news, they're remaking Robocop. Is this Chapter 9 bankruptcy just a creative marketing ploy by MGM?

29 Chapter 9, Title 11 of the United States Code is a chapter of the United States Bankruptcy Code, available exclusively to municipalities and assists them in the restructuring of debts. The two largest municipal bankruptcies under Chapter 9 have been Jefferson County, Alabama in 2011 and Orange County, California in 1994. You may now continue.

54 I guess the question is whether Detroit tries to go for a full dissolution, sticking Michigan with the bill. The positive side for the city is that they don't have to deal with it anymore or worry about paying off the debts. The negative is that Detroit ceases to exist, meaning the city and all its employees go bye-bye. IMHO, that's not a bad thing given how Kwame Kilpatrick and all have used the city, its police force, its school system, etc.

193 I guess we should have let the British keep it, after all. It is amazing--and illustrative--that a city and region that had the advantage of all three major American car manufacturers is now nothing. Bahrain and Dubai have shown better top-down stewardship than the social engineers of the Democratic party. On a completely unrelated note--it occurs to me one of the reasons why the Civil War was final after Appomattox, why there was no second attempt, no continued guerilla action, was that the South had a system it could live under. Maybe not want, but could live under. It was still the United States, and after 1876 the Federal government did not bother them enough to get worked up about. It was still a Republic of their liking, or liking enough.

228 Worst of all, SDCC has now become Corporate Con. Its no longer as fun as it used to be because it has become Hollywood's pet con. I wouldnÂ’t go that far, but yeah, itÂ’s less fun. I actually managed to get tickets this year, then decided that IÂ’d rather have the $140 so sold them back. Mind you, having to go to work and looking at all the crazy crowds on the way in (best/worst bumper sticker so far: Wash is my copilot) has brought on a debilitating wave of nostalgia for when it was more enjoyable to me.

244 You snowbillies don't understand the greatness known as teriyaki spam Gross. Just... gross. Is this it? is this when we'll look back and say "Yeah, that's when the burning times began." Could be. I see two options. #1- A Bailout. Look for lots of people to start screaming then. It's one thing for it to be a company like GM (Teh Jobs!!!) or a State like CA (and even they can only get a stealth bailout). If the Feds bail out Detroit, it's every-man-for-himself time, as far as the cities are concerned. #2- No Bailout. When Detroit really goes under, and Ford and GM move out of state (I'm pretty sure they would at that point), the Michigan economy takes a dump. Then, MI declares bankruptcy as does (as you point out) IL (or at least Chicago). And the plague spreads rapidly.

This will sound extremely racist, but Detroit was the first major American city to have a black mayor, and he couldn't have been a worse one - Coleman Young.  He proceeded to turn the city into one giant patronage and spoils machine for his friends, while implementing every stupid liberal policy you can think of to "help his people."  Smart white AND black people started fleeing the city, and it's been straight downhill ever since.

This has little to do with the decline of the auto industry in the 1970s and everything to do with a corrupt black city machine that looted the city treasury and scared away businesses and better off citizens who could afford to flee.

264 I am from Detroit. You are understating how Democratic it is. The last several mayors of Detroit would not do business with a contractor and would not hire an employee if it was known that they were a Republican. Detroit's city council is all Democrat. It's police, fire, and library boards are all Democrat. It is perhaps as Democratic a city as possible. And it is in Wayne County, which is solidly Democrat- the county government, supervisor, etc are all solid Democrat. And most of the debt that Detroit piled up occurred during the years when Michigan had a Democrat as Governor. And this is spite of the fact that the surrounding communities are subsidizing Detroit- my water rates are double where they should be because the city of Detroit makes profit off of us. So you are understating the extent to which one political party has destroyed a major city.

My understanding (low though it may be) from the local news around here is that IL proper may be worse off than Chicago.

Residents of that horrid state (but S. IL people, good gun loving people) tell me that the Chicago Machine has stacked the system so S. IL basically funds Chicago, and Chi-town has offloaded most of it's responsibilities to the state (hence the problem.)

Obama, Geither and Bernanke have a plan to save Detroit, I assume, and it'll look something like this:

1. Print more $$.
2. Buy all of Detroit's debt.
3. Sell new Detroit bonds for a 1/1000 of face value
4. Make politicians and cronies richer.
5. Claim success, wait for applause and awards.

And after all that, Detroit will be worse than ever and the U.S. will have more debt and a more devalued dollar. This is how Obamanomics.

356 54 I guess the question is whether Detroit tries to go for a full dissolution, sticking Michigan with the bill. Posted by: Brandon In Baton Rouge at July 18, 2013 04:26 PM (a3iAA) Hardly - Detroit it too big too fail. 437 That Paypal has all the makings of a publicity stunt. They gave the guy a negative balance so he wouldn't run out a buy a Porche. By the next morning whatever the shortfall was is gone from my linked bank acct. Ebay used to have this unfortunate happening of going down right after thanksgiving, for 20 minutes. True, but I highly doubt the entire 20billion is pensions (but I could be wrong.)  11 billion is unsecured creditors (I'm not sure which side of that Pensions are on, but I doubt it's both.)

Which implies at least that they're looking at an upper limit of $11 billion in pension shortfall.

Not that it's insubstantial at that, just that I could still see a Uncle Sugar Bail out.

I say that
we should work a full-on Berlin Airlift. We can air-drop great bags of
money, the above-mentioned degrees, and just for good measure, several
thousand tons of feel-good, self-esteem, and 3.0 GPA's

Wouldn't it be easier to just airlift all of the residents to Berlin?  Tell the Germans that if they don't accept the new refugees, then they're obviously racist and we'll send Al Sharpton and Jesse Jackson over to pay them a visit.

I regard the destruction of some very fine, old, neighborhoods/houses one of the great tragedies. Some wonderful architecture and craftsmanship indifferently destroyed by a swinish multitude of barbarians.

513 Hey folks, don't hold your breath waiting for the MSM to remind everybody that Obama devoted EIGHTY FIVE BILLION DOLLARS in bailout money to the UAW and Detroit to prevent a bankruptcy. You thought all the failed green tech loans to companies like Solyndra was bad? Bah! That only totaled around $27 billion. Obama invested $85 billion fed. tax dollars in preventing a Detroit bankruptcy. All that money has now been flushed down the toilet.

517 248 This will sound extremely racist, but Detroit was the first major American city to have a black mayor, and he couldn't have been a worse one - Coleman Young. Posted by: rockmom backhoe here. Same thing happened here to Hot-lanta. ( Apologies to Atlanta Morons, but I saw it happen. ) Atlanta is a cesspool of nepotism, cronyism, corruption, and wasteful spending.

523 They win! There tore the heart out of America, they did it out of selfishness, they did it on purpose and then they laughed about it. Now they set the remains on fire every night - and scream like spoiled children for more help and more money... they ate Detroit, and they ruined all the cities that supported the greatest city of industry in the world. The Unions and EPA didn't protect the people - they destroyed all those lives. I grew up there under Coleman Young... the city was over run with savages - and then they sold it off to the muslims that hate America, one piece at a time. Detroit - you'll never be forgotten. Founded 1701. Died 2013. Killed by generations of entitled Democrats.

529 I've been watching Continuum, a preachy show about how evil corporatiuons are, them having taken over world government after all regular governments have gone bankrupt. If Dune was sci-fi for the '60's generation, drugs and sex, Continuum is sci-fi for the Occupy generation, "corporations are Nazis". The funny thing is that the policies that the OWS crowd endorses is what leads to government bankruptcies. As Detroit shows. (Just to bring this back on-topic.)
