— andy It's almost like the hysteria over "assault rifles" is pure political theater.

This is what a mass killer looks like, according to a Department of Homeland Security analysis. He works alone. He uses a semi-automatic handgun. He’s a he. And he probably didn’t serve in the U.S. military. That’s the conclusion of a November 28 analysis by the New Jersey branch of the Department of Homeland Security’s partnership with state and local law enforcement. The so-called intelligence “Fusion Center” sifted through data on 29 major mass killings in the U.S. since 1999, starting with the Littleton, Colorado school shooting. Its practical advice is to be more concerned by your co-worker with the bad hygiene who mutters about putting his “things in order” than by the war veteran in the next cubicle.
Data? That stuff's not important when you're simply using a tragedy to advance your long-stated policy goals.
The report (pdf) is worth a read to show just how little difference any of the proposals from the left would do to actually address the topic. This fact in particular just leaped off the page at me ("literally" as gun-grabbing Joe Biden might say):
Typically, the immediate deployment of law enforcement
is required to stop the shooting and mitigate further harm to victims. Typically, active shooter situations are over within 10 to 15 minutes.
Let me rephrase that for you: "Typically, victims are sitting ducks for the 10-15 minutes it takes law enforcement to arrive."
This is what happens when the government mis-focuses its crime prevention efforts on preventing law-abiding citizens from using firearms to defend themselves. When the left says, "the police are there to protect you", what it really means is, "you're expendable".

Ask Australia how that worked out for them? If politicians insist on leaving citizens unprotected, what could possibly go wrong? Go to the South Side of Chicago, find the sweetest looking Granny just coming out of her AME Church in her beautiful suit and hat, then search her purse. You won't find brown recluse spiders, you will find a big honking handgun and that is presuming Granny don't blow you away for messin' with her purse. Granny does not have the gun because she wants to lug around a pound of steel and lead, Granny got da damn gun so LaVonderelle and Markwese don't try to snatch her damn purse and possibly wind up with a broken hip.

Its OK for every policeman to have access to an AR15 to defend you (when they're 15 minutes away, and are under zero legal obligation to actually do so), but its not OK for you to have the same gun to defend yourself.

Part of the problem with this "debate" is the assumption by much of the population that the police are there to protect you. They are not. They are there to figure out who committed the crime and put the bad guys away after the fact. They owe no legal duty to any member of the public to "prevent" a crime. If you try to sue them, claiming they should have acted faster, used their gun for your protection, etc., you will lose based on an immunity that they have. (If they actually commit the harm on you themselves, they may be subject to suit, although it is tricky.) Usually, you will lose rather quickly at the pleadings stage. They may feel morally compelled to help you, but they are under no obligation to do so.
It seems like most people who argue for gun restrictions believe the police are there to protect you. They are not. The real person responsible for your safety is, and always has been, you.

Offhand, Unruh and Whitman are the only veterans I can recall among the mass-murder-shooter crowd. For years it was claimed that Charles Whitman, the Texas Tower sniper, was motivated to shoot people because of insanity caused by a brain tumor found during his autopsy. Neurologists have since disproven that theory. Whitman, like Unruh, like the Columbine killers and most of the others, did what he did because he liked it, because he was an evil, murderous rat bastard.
In 'Othello', Shakespeare created Iago, a character who is seemingly motivated solely by the sheer joy he experiences causing death and harm to others. In other words, he's just plain evil. A bad man doing the devil's work.
Society doesn't make such men. Most of them are not suffering from mental illness. They make themselves.

Several days ago we had a discussion about buying guns in an LLC.
I thought that was impossible, because of pistol permits etc.
Talked Larry Hyatt, Hyatt gun largest gun shop in USA, two days ago and he said he had never done it, but he would as long as I the managing partner had a permit and passed the background check.
Put your guns in a LLC. You can sell or give the stock to anyone and there will be no transfer fees, background checks etc.

Is cute.
But it is safe to assume that the reason there's no mention of race is because white dudes are slightly underrepresented among mass shooters (if you control for "dudes").
They're also underrepresented among serial killers. But everybody knows, so.
The actual "report," by the way, is shit. It's a list of links to news articles (very unreliable sources), and the "indicators" summary is self-sourced and looks like Law & Order script tips. It's a list of outward symptoms of suicidality with the girl stuff scrubbed out and DHS's profile of a "far right" guy kludged into the gap.
Poop.

There has never been a class of veterans more mistreated than Viet Nam vets and they did not riot across the landscape killing and burning things to assuage their angst. That was the peaceniks--see Ayers and Dorn, et al. When I took my girlfriend to pick out her first handgun, she chose a Baretta Bobcat. I personally don't like the anemic .25 ACP caliber she likes so much, but one of the big advantages to that model is that it has a popup barrel feature that allows the shooter to put the pistol into battery without racking the slide. The dealer, a friend of mine, told me that it was designed specifically for those, such as the elderly and small-framed people, who have difficulty with slides. Again, aside from the weakness its pocket pistol caliber, her Baretta is a sweet, accurate little piece. She's frigging Annie Oakley with that gun.

Pinking shears don't cut flesh half as well as a regular serrated shears. Usually have a rounded point, besides.
Now the rotary cutter...people have done severe damage with that. To the point they sell Kevlar gloves to lessen the odds of cutting into your opposite-hand thumb and doing permanent damage to tissues and nerves.

Lying about the economy, the deficit, the unemployment, gun violence, or any other proggie program is good in order to create the socialist utopia is good.. Very, very good.

O/T: In case this hasn't been posted yet:
A United States minesweeper ship that crashed into a coral reef due to inaccurate Navy maps will have to be cut into small pieces and removed in order to prevent harming the oceanÂ’s ecosystem, according to the Navy and other reports.
The $277 million USS Guardian, a Naval warship that clears waterways of mines, crashed into a coral reef near the Philippines earlier this month.
The Navy will disassemble it piece by piece in order to avoid damaging the reef rather than tow the multi-million dollar ship off of the reef and perform necessary repairs.
Coral reef trumps $277M naval warship. Good to know. Link to Washington Free Beacon

But when you compare the ammo prices for the same item, LG has CTD beat by a mile.
One box of 20 rounds of .223 ammo is $34.50 on CTD.
One box of 20 rounds of .223 ammo is $22 on LG.

It's glorification of a tragedy. I appreciate what the NFL is trying to do, but there's no reason for it. If, say, the Giants were playing I might not mind, since the Giants are ostensibly the team for that region of Connecticut. But as it stands, this is just turning the tragedy into a paparazzi tour. It's disgusting, IMO. Those children should be allowed to get back to something normal instead of having the reality of what happened thrown in their face every five minutes.

The police have no resposability to protect you.
The courts have decided that you have no right to expect the police to protect you from crime! Incredible as it may seem, the courts have ruled that the police are not obligated to even respond to your calls for help, even in life threatening situations! To be fair to the police, I think that many, and perhaps most, officers really do want to save lives and stop dangerous situations before people get hurt. But the key point to remember is that the courts have said they are under no legal obligation to do so.

Scarier is the Precedent....
The Push is on to allow a Doctor, without any Court action, to decide you cannot excercise a RIGHT...
Next will be a 'data field' on your medical record, where the Doctor indicates via a check box whether its OK for you to buy, or OWN, a weapon... it will be done by Executive Order, and that info will be 'shared' to the Background check folks....
ie.... a Doctor will have VETO power over your RIGHT!

Buying my girlfriend a .357 S&W Ladysmith for her birthday in Febuary. One can use .38 Special in a .357, but most of the focus in familiarization will be done using .357, as expensive as it is, for the reason you gave. A comparatively short-barreled revolver like the Ladysmith will 'behave' far more differently shooting .357 than it will shooting .38 Special. She needs to know how to handle and shoot the caliber she'll be carrying.

I taught my kids on a .22.... so they got good sight picture habits... stance... trigger pull...
Less boom made them want to shoot more initialy... and with the cheaper ammo made it so they shot more rounds more often...
But I did then transition them up to my .45 and had them do enough rounds to get proficient with it...

issue. The right to bear arms is there for one reason - to shoot the fuckers that would take it away.
>>>END OF STORY.. We should not let the left bend the dialog.
There does need to be a better defense than "It's in the Constitution" otherwise one day it won't be. So it isn't the "end of story"
The answer to the attacks from the left are simple. Democracy by itself is not adequate protection against tyranny. There are a number of good historical examples, find and understand your own.
If they argue that the citizenry would not stand a chance against a tyrannical government (e.g. It's pointless) the easy retort is, "If that's true the Citizens need to be better armed"

Maybe, but practicing with a .22 hones basic shooting skills. If you can't hit anything with a .22, you're not going to hit anything with a .40, either.
If you're good with a .22, chances are you'll be at least adequate with the .40. But yeah- it'll take practice with the .40 to be good with it.
From what I understand (and have experienced while hunting), in an intense shooting situation you don't notice the recoil and report like you do at the range. If I try to shoot my 7mm Mag with no hearing protection at an outdoor range, it's painfully loud. When I'm shooting at a deer, I'm aware that the rifle fired, but barely hear or feel it.
IIRC the phenomenon is known as "auditory exclusion".

You can start a beginner off with a .22 revolver and move quickly to a .38/.357 with light target loads. Too long with a .22 or switching from a .22 auto to a larger caliber revolver doesn't work as well. If all you have is a large caliber revolver start them off on that with light loads. Hearing protection is a must. The noise scares beginners more than recoil will.

True. But that doesn't mean that shooting the .22 is not beneficial.
2 things.
1. Shooting a high powered rifle like a 7mm Rem Mag or 30-06 is going to wear down your shoulder quickly. Two boxes of shells in you are likely done for the day.
2. After two boxes of shells you could take your family to dinner...at a nice place.
The shooters discipline is *part* familiarity with your weapon, and part repetition of your shooting routine. To get good at the repetition part you need to shoot thousands of rounds. Doing that on your high powered rifle would wear out the barrel rendering the gun useless, destroy your shoulder, and cost you a mint. So most shooters do routine repetition practice with a .22 and do confidence shooting with their big guns only occasionally.

A lot of words, the bottom line is Feinstein and her ilk are just evil. They don't care about safety and they aren't putting on a show to pander to constituents even dumber than they are. It's not about the show. They truly just want to do this for sake of pure power.
Even if they aren't secretly planning some Stalinist-style police state, the fact that we have guns is psychological... to them, and to us. A person who is truly helpless will have more fear and in that fear they will act differently. They want conservatives to toe the line. They want them to fear the government.
Feinstein isn't smart enough to have a secret agenda. Her agenda is clear, bow down and kiss her ring.

But I tried to watch more of it. One future cop gets sucked back in time with the freedom fighters. She is wearing a smart suit and has cortex installed smart chips and video contacts. And suddenly she is talking with someone in this timeline. Geeky kid with a hidden room in the family barn. But he is somehow receiving and transmitting data with the cop though he says his gear is experimental and encrypted. And when you meet the geeky kid's family, they are rural and complaining about how corporate fat cats get saved while if it was them, they would be screwed. Next issue is then future cop easily manages to sweet talk the local cops into talking with DHS to create a strike force to hunt her fugitives.

I'm keeping my fingers crossed that the Liber8 neo-Occupoopers stay the bad guys.

Here's the thing...the Liber8 group, was against the tyrranical government in the future.
They weren't calling for government goodies, like the Occupoopers.
They were calling for their Rights and Freedoms to be restored.
The lady cop was called a 'Protector' in the future.
Which seemed like an Orwellian re-naming of law enforcement.

I suppose the Dallas 1963 assassination provides such a case in point. But not so more recently, where no bodies were recovered from the IRS leased property incident where the Feds and police coincidentally were in drill, and then the horror of the H.C.Library UT student where witness testimonies were no longer broadcast and held as evidence after the official account hit the media and public. How did Austin Police full force storm the library within 2 minutes of an alarm call, long before the campus police arrived? The alarm would have been directed to campus police, one block uphill, then to the City of Austin Police Dept. I'm not arguing that campus police are as "professional" as might be desired, but fully capable of responding, ARRIVING at the sight, even if only to stand around and await backup from the City of Austin. Hm, "police" more broadly being identified as "law enforcement" now is including the Feds AND the US Military against the citizenry as the unconstitutional DHS and Executive Branch coupled with the whoring Judicial and incestuous Legislative have determined to be "best" for authoritarianism, no thank you.
And the circle returns to the Constitution, specifically our Bill of Rights as US citizens. Hell, now citizenry "means" serfdom according to authoritarians.

Kind of makes you wonder doesn't it. One of the biggest lobbies against the NRA and gun rights is who? Police unions. No no, you can't defend yourself, that's OUR job. A lot of great law enforcement that gets it, especially in the rural areas, but they are outnumbered.
I would also point out the drug war. I've never smoked weed in my whole life, but I find this effort ridiculous. Over half of our entire law enforcement system (police, courts, corrections, everything) is tied up in this. Last year over half of all criminal arrests were for marijuana possession. It's asinine. Those are resources that could be reallocated to REAL criminals.

I asked her "If you're not comfortable with teachers protecting your children, why would you be comfortable with letting them train and educate them?".

Well, stoners are a lot easier to catch. But, as far as their true negative impact on society versus the criminally aggressive, they're pretty far down on the list of danger.

Perhaps drawing lots will be the best way to figure out who'll be the "occupier". Oh and no guarantee that you both want be shot dead, of course. Not necessary to setup an LLC and may actually limit your options in some respects. What you probably want is a NFA trust arrangement. Also allows you currently to buy suppressors, NFA firearms, etc. and for the trust to hold them. Regular firearms not regulated under the National Firearms Act can also belong to the trust. Make sure to get a good local attorney experienced in such things in drawing it up.

The Missouri v. Holland is the case where a U.S. Canadian migratory bird (read ducks, geese, etc) used a more expansive reading of the commerce clause to allow federal government to regulate hunting and fishing of species that crossed state lines regularly.
Bond. v. U.S. is a current case before the Sup. Ct. that may overrule or narrow Missouri v. Holland

See volokh.com for an extended talk about how treaties fit with the Constitution.
Given that Heller established an individual right to firearms protected from Congress, current consensus is that a Treaty cannot give a power to Congress that it lacks. Second, any levying of penalties on individual citizens must require House and Senate to pass implementing legislation. Third, Printz establishes that states and local governments may not be ordered to perform enforcement of federal laws.
Where I believe ratification of the Small Arms Treaty is problematic is that it would allow the President more latitude to ban importation or export of firearms, parts kits, ammunition etc. in order to conform to the Treaty.

To me, a citizen and former military member, who has served all over the globe. The issue about gun ownership transcends the issue of “second amendment” rights, etc…
It to a degree is now a issue of culture, and effect. It is a matter of what we desire and how we perceive the role of government, and the role of the individual; of having laws that address the real problems that we face, or dance around the issue; of the worthiness of freedom with all its warts (to include what some may feel approach ‘anarchy’), vs. the burden of tyranny, both upon the soul of the individual, but his enterprising spirit as well.
Culture:
One thing I have learned, what is valued most by so many other cultures, (regardless what they thought of our policies, presence, etc), - is what they perceive as America’s belief in the individual. One common theme ran among many of our admirers – they loved our ‘cowboy’ movies. They saw in those movies a sense of hope and belief of the individual, of ability to overcome adversity, in many cases in a lawless land.
Somehow over time, individual gun ownership became entwined with our culture, in part by necessity - as our early frontiersmen went West beyond both the grips and scope of any formal government. Guns were used to not only secure food, but fend off adversaries, and in some cases re-establish law from corrupted officials (even as recently as – the “battle of Athens, post WWII). The point is – whether by design or default - guns are now in fact synonymous with our individual freedom.
A change in, a restriction of, our gun ownership is but one shackle on our body of freedom, but a hobbled individual becomes dependent versus independent, a slave, and not a master of his own destiny, and is counter to our basic culture.
Effect
Unfortunately, gun laws, in all their forms have little effect on crime.
And maybe most importantly the gun laws already in effect – target however effectively or ineffectively the most important issues.
In regards to “assault weapons”. Current laws already severely limit and restrict true military style weapons, the most important feature being that they are automatic weapons. What is legally available to the general public, while maybe looking scary, are really cosmetic look-alike weapons that fire only in semi-automatic mode. Just because my Volkswagen remodel looks like a Porsche does not mean it is one, in performance, speed, or anything else.
In regards to ‘back-ground’ checks – they are working! And they are sufficient, in the Sandy Hook massacre, the perpetrator was stopped from buying guns, he had to kill to get the ones he used.
Let us not use the unfortunate events in Connecticut and Colorado as ‘red herrings’ to advance a political and social agenda. [That will have little effect on the issue – gun violence, and impact negatively on our social fabric]. And that is what it is. A political agenda advanced by a few, fueled by fear, a simple move ‘to get rid of guns’ by private individuals – period.
So letÂ’s call it for what it is, and look at what for instance the PresidentÂ’s past position on guns has been:
- Prior to taking office, President Obama sat on the board of the Joyce Foundation, an anti-gun organization that is the largest funding source for radical anti-gun groups in the nation.
- In 1996, Obama supported a ban on the manufacture, sale and possession of handguns.
- In 1999, he proposed a 500 percent excise tax on firearms and ammunition. In 2005, Obama voted against legislation to protect homeowners from prosecution in cases where they used a firearm to halt a home invasion.
The deadly attacks in Connecticut and Colorado have fueled Obama's hatred for guns and gun rights, and he - and many others –motivated by fear and a misguided feeling of ‘the need to act’ are moving rapidly to dramatically restrict our rights to bear arms.
I for one, strongly oppose Obama's undermining our basic and fundamental rights and the thought that the federal government - not the people have the ultimate power.
I am urging all of us to stand against any and all attempts by this administration to encroach on our freedom.
