— andy Cue the sad trombone for poor Dianne Feinstein. When we last saw her, Ted Cruz was mercilessly beating her with a simple question that she could only respond to with emotional blather because logic and fact are lost on her. And now Harry Reid has delivered the most unkindest cut of all.
Sen. Dianne Feinstein (D-Calif.) said on Monday that a controversial assault weapons ban will not be part of a Democratic gun bill that was expected to reach the Senate floor next month. After a meeting with Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-Nev.) on Monday, a frustrated Feinstein said she learned that the bill she sponsored — which bans 157 different models of assault weapons and high-capacity ammunition magazines — wouldn’t be part of a Democratic gun bill to be offered on the Senate floor. Instead, it can be offered as an amendment. But its exclusion from the package makes what was already an uphill battle an almost certain defeat.
6th grade was a tough year for DiFi, but I'm sure liberal "journalists" will be there to console her.
Just listened to Feinstein's takedown of Ted Cruz on radio, her off the cuff eloquence is lost on TV, listen w your eyes closed.

Luke needs a class in logic.
I want to know why "appeal to authority" works as a logical argument for liberals, but not for conservatives.

DiFi tried to compare Guns to Child Pornography to answer Cruz's question (in fairness I suppose only after someone else proposed it from the crowd.)
Which the MSM will count as "eloquence" not realizing of course that the 1st amendment protects regular old adult pornography (IIRC there's lots of caselaw on this) however the so-called "exception" to it in the case of children has zero to do with "speech" and everything to do with "consent." So the comparison is horrifically wrong on so many levels.
As an aside if DiFi had any actual eloquence she'd have tried to compare the "imminent threat" standard of 1A restriction to some sort of sophistry about guns. (I'm not saying it's a *good* argument, just that it produces more red meat than what she tried.)

If all you're doing is selling ammo you can get a kind of FFL-Lite. It's pretty cheap. But you'll also need to get all the crap business stuff, including liability insurance, and that's what's going to cost you.
From a pure materials standpoint, $3k for equipment and brass/lead/primers seems a little low to me.

Speaking of Magpul and Defense Distributed, that brings up a question about the 3D printing craze: Why? Just... why?
Defense Distributed, according to the article, recently made a magazine that fed 347 rounds before shitting the bed. For a 30-round magazine, that's less than 12 cycles before it fails. What amazing new technology! And I can make this wonderment of reliability in the comfort of my own home?! Tell me more!
On the other hand, Magpul already makes plastic magazines that don't fail after 11.5 loads. And the cost is a hell of a lot cheaper.
Hasn't plastic been around for over 100 years already? Why are we inventing ways to make it LESS useful? For less than $5K I could buy an injection molder and all the dies I need to start pumping out high quality magazines, pistol grips, foregrips, buttstocks, etc.

Sheriffs are elected officials here and run all LE in the state. City police don't do dick without permission from the county guys. IMO you're seeing a tech that has some good, useable applications being force fit into an application for which it wasn't designed in response to current events. And I believe that everyone associated with 3-D guns/mags/etc is very upfront about saying this is the very beginning of the process, not anywhere near an end product.

For one, this is a home-brew project and not a commercial operation. Someone is using technology that isn't the injection molding type to make something equivalent.
Second, this takes the pressure off a commercial vendor supplying the product and into the hands of the masses that can reproduce the product at home by themselves. No one will know how many of these mags they have. If and when they finally figure out how to make the plastic durable enough to pass mil-spec standards, this will be awesome.

Yeah I think AllenG's got it.
Also I'd add that the price of 3D printers is going to drop fairly quickly over the next few years. Lack of high demand and mass production seems to be what's keeping their price up, but just like flatscreen TV's someone will innovate a way to make them significantly cheaper soon enough.
Also I could be wrong, but I think that an injection molder takes skill to use. 3D printers, not so much. Load up the spec hit "go."

At the last gun show I went to, I stopped at the local Tea Party Patriots table and was talking to the guys there. Signed up for the email list. Then came the intense looks, lowered voices and Agenda 21.
Now I've just gotten a hysterical email about how Agenda 21 is coming to Jacksonville. "Our mayor is highly educated in Agenda 21 and came directly from A21 and was put in our city to implement it."
I repeat, FFS.

AllenG, will you be buying once-used brass, or scavenging? And do you intend to limit yourself to pistol cartridges at first?
For pistol components, bullet, primer and powder might cost you 0.18 to 0.25 per round, so if you stock up for 10k rounds that's $2500. I never buy brass, but I recall the prices for a small bag seem outrageous. You may want to find a source of spent and dirty casings that you can add value to. And research a cleaning process conducive to mass production.

Syria,
The "chemical attack" mentioned a chlorine smell. Maybe the perpetrator used chlorine gas? Or maybe it was a conventional explosive rocket that hit a chlorine gas pressure tank?
FYI Chlorine gas is used in many water systems to disinfectthe water and to kill bacteria. It is cheap and easy to use in a water treatment system. You can also use a hypochlorite (liquid bleach) product, but gas was used in a lot of older systems.

"My point is to have ammunition available for sale or to give as gifts to friends. "
Sounds like a less-than-commercial kind of scenario that could be worked out with a Dillon (or eq.) progressive press rather than some seriously big money setup.
Gathering components to roll your own is a stone bitch right now. Primers especially, followed by projectiles. Projectiles are solvable for most pistol applications by casting your own. Higher-velocity applications are another can of worms. I'm personally working through the process of powdercoating my boolits to deal with that independently. Work in progress.
Primers will be a neverending and expensive quest for the forseeable future - and that's *if* the other gun control shoe fails to fall.
Depending on your scale, you may be able to procure unsorted, dirty brass from the operator of an indoor range if you offer him one more dollar then the commercial reloader to whom he's currently offloading his floor sweepings.

Speaking of money grabs, does the military still use script at any of the overseas posts?
Back when I was in Korea, we were paid in script. Used just like cash, but if you wanted to buy things off base you were suppose to trade it in at the bank for Korean money. Of course that never happened, as the Korean would give you a better rate.
Everything worked fine until one night when the base was locked down and the script was exchanged for a different style. The old script was worthless. If you had a ton of it, you needed to be able to explain where it came from.
Koreans were tossing bags of the stuff over the fence hoping to get it exchanged. Some committed suicide.

A few years ago, Discovery, (I think), ran a special on how small shops in Pakistan produced weapons....often times in very small stalls, from lumps of scrap metal. Chopped up ships were popular, because the steel was of the right thickness. They'd rough it in, mill it out, then carbon soak it for 24 hours. Barrels were drilled out by hand...frequently by children...rifled too. Non metallic parts were carved by hand.
They were cranking out cheap copies of just about any firearm you wanted. It was pretty interesting.

Yeah, I saw that. They substituted highly skilled hand labor for precision equipment. Parts would be of dubious quality, as the heat treat was hit or miss. If they weren't working for 10 cents an hour, they would be incredibly expensive. How many here can hand file an AK-47 from a block of hot rolled steel, case harden it and make a shooter? Not many, I'll wager. Takes a lifetime of working with hand tools to gain that level of skill, and even then the parts would not interchange.

I wouldn't touch one. It's nice that people that want to protect themselves have access to weapons...but if it came to it, I'd prefer a quicky zip gun, or pipe shotgun.
The carbon soaking they did was very....inaccurate. Wrap metal parts, and lumps of charcoal in several layers of wet clay, and toss into a fire for a day. As the clay dried, and cracked in the fire, I don't see how you could prevent oxygen from getting inside, and screwing things up.
Posted by: Sticky Wicket at March 19, 2013 08:10 AM (0IhFx)
Of course. All governments have wanted to do this, it's just a matter of who was going to go first.
Which begs the question: what do we do when it happens here? Because, frankly, as dumbed-down, wealth-envious and politically torpid as the 47% are, I can't see any resistance happening once Barky makes a move for the money.

Any government which resorts to outright theft of its people's wealth is no longer a legitimate government.
Which is why I want to see Cypriot bankers and politicians swinging from lampposts. Since the nutless GOP won't even consider Insty's suggestion to immediately file a bill making this sort of confiscation illegal and shove it down the Democrats' throats, then the only check to Washington's thievery is to make them fear violence.

The ol'chestnut "what is an assault weapon?"
If we define it as "anything that has been used or is designed for use in military assaults," we get all kinds of fun answers.
A wide array of bows and a wider array of arrows, including flaming.
Muskets, including match, flint, and percussion ignitions; rifled and smoothbore versions.
Any rifle that uses a Mauser-type bolt action, which is basically "all of them."
Any rifle that uses a lever action.
Any revolver that is similar to the many Colt designs
Any handgun that uses the Browning 1911 basic design. Or a Luger-type action.
Rocks
Pikes
Spears of any kind, including pointed-sticks (insert John Cleese joke here)
Fire in about 30 different forms
Any kind of throwing device - catapult, trebuchet, ballista, etc. Would the fetid carcass that these sometimes threw be considered an "Assault Weapon?"
A slingshot and/or sling.
A boomerang
I'm tired of this list. But there's no denying that all of these things most certainly HAVE been used to assault enemy formations and/or fortifications over the millenia.
There really is no limit to how ignorant liberals are...

You need an FFL type 6 for selling any reloads or manufacturing ammunition. The FFL requires you to have stated business hours and allow access to your "business" to the BATF. Form is here http://www.atf.gov/forms/download/atf-f-5310-12.pdf
Watch out for any local land zoning and business licensing issues that can complicate getting the FFL. Worst of all, you have to register with the State Department http://www.pmddtc.state.gov/registration/index.html and pay an annual fee of $2250 per year for the privilege of existing. No apparent exemptions noted except for making shotgun shells for resale: http://www.pmddtc.state.gov/registration/lr.html
This is part of that wonderful ITAR to implement treaties that U.S. has signed regarding the arms trade.
