D'OH. Gun Thread

Dangit.. I forgot.

Ok, gun pic name this firearm.

No answer below the fold because you all know what it is. Despite their current assholery, Brits made some pretty awesome firearms back in the day.

There was a time when we made the M1A1 Thompson submachine gun. There was also a time when we needed to make a cheap easy to break down version that still fired .45 rounds but was less complex. The M3 grease gun was made for this purpose. And it delivered.

OH okay, below the fold. STEN is an acronym, from the names of the weapon's chief designers, Major Reginald V. Shepherd and Harold Turpin, and EN for Enfield. Over 4 million Stens in various versions were made in the 1940s.

9mm killin machine.

14 10 Comrade Arthur @2:40,

The STEN's bad rep happened largely because of the insistence of people in jangling the hades out of the Mags and not cleaning the things.

The Sterling was in many ways the STEN MkVII the improved curved magazine, and improved magazine follower increased reliability by 40% according to the files I've read.

They also lent themselves to being G. Lucas' Imperial guns quite well.

17 Ok, question for the gun nuts. Wife just bought a Beretta CX4 Storm in .45 ACP. It came with 8 round mags. I've been looking for extended mags, and while I can find 30 in 9mm and 17 in .40, there doesn't seem to be anything out there in .45 ACP. I'm sure I've seen .45 extended mags before, but they seem to have vanished. Anyone got any suggestions?

as Anna Puma, AlexTheChick, and others here said IIRC the key to Snowden was the revelation the NSA was mapping people's webs.

NSA officials declined to say how many Americans have been caught up in the effort, including people involved in no wrongdoing, the Times reported. The documents do not describe what has resulted from the scrutiny, which links phone numbers and e-mails in a "contact chain" tied directly or indirectly to a person or organization overseas that is of foreign intelligence interest, the paper reported.

24 So, I bought a Taurus PT 145 (maybe I already mentioned this) and I went shooting and, wow is the trigger pull hard. And long. (er... oh nevermind) Anyhow, is there anything I can do about that? It was such a chore just getting it to shoot that I didn't even notice the recoil. Or should I just figure that the awful trigger pull is a safety feature and in an emergency I wouldn't be going through a whole box of ammo anyhow? The guy at the range said that it would help to relax my main hand... I'll try that next time.

(er... oh nevermind) Anyhow, is there anything I can do about that? Posted by: Synova Check on gun forums to see if that pull is typical. If not, Taurus does free repairs. If it is, check with a gunsmith to see what he charges for a trigger job*. might want to strip it and see if it is lubed right. *takes it apart. files/sands down rough edges. makes sure it doesn't fire full-auto by accident (the most important part)

Posted by: Synova at September 29, 2013 03:02 PM (7/PU+) Not a ton of gunsmiths work on Tauri, but: http://www.tjscustomgunworks.com/ and http://www.actionsbyt.com/ One of the reasons is Taurus does not like to sell parts and there is a concern about their lifetime warranty, but a trigger job really really should not break that. I usually see that done on their revolvers, I handled a Raging Bull with a 2lb glass break and my 44 tracker has a good trigger (custom).

34 Ammo's coming back. Finally got my hands on 5.56mm at Cabelas. And it came with bonus Clueless Cabelas Salesguy interaction...

As I'm putting ten boxes of Federal 55-grain into my basket, Salesguy says, "Dude, save yourself some money, I've got the 300-round boxes on the bottom shelf."

I said, "Yeah, I saw them, but they're cheaper in the 20-boxes."

"Nah, they're cheaper in bulk."

As neutrally as I could, I explained, "Well... these 20-round boxes are $9.99. That's 50 cents a round. Those 300-round boxes are $169.99. If they were fifty cents a round, they would only be $150. I'm saving twenty bucks this way."

Salesguy goes blank, takes out calculator, taps for a while, then wanders away.

38 Whenever I see a Sten, I think, "How hard could it be to design a closed-bolt Sten-like upper for the AR-15, with a side loading mag, ejecting downward into the magazine well?" Just a tube and a barrel. I'd buy one. I want a 9mm upper, but I don't want to screw around with mag blocks or, worse, yet, dedicated lowers.

39 And yes what Comrade Arthur said, check with Taurus first they may be able to fix it for you for free. The replaced the entire slide on my PT99 no charge at all because the adjustable sight broke during firing - gave me a brand new fixed sight slide.

43 Here's an ammo-buying tip if you live near a Cabelas. Get a Cabelas Visa card. Every once in a while they send me a coupon for twenty dollars off of a $100 purchase. Plus, they pay 2% cash back on Cabelas purchases. So my ten boxes of 5.56mm cost me $78. Instead of 50 cents a round, it was a more normal 39 cents.

Whenever I get one of those coupons in the mail, it's Ammo Stocking Time.

63 If you're going to do some work on your trigger, rather than filing or sanding, get a new (i.e. known to be flat) oil stone, clamp it to a workbench or table, set the trigger (or other part) on the stone and lightly "stone" the part. Then check for fit and action. Repeat as needed. This will get any tiny burrs removed first, and may be all that is needed.

That was my everyday carry gun, before the tragic boating accident. If it's a Gen 2 I highly recommend changing out the 17# standard spring for a 15# Wolf spring, the early versions of the G-36 were notorious for FTF/FTE issues. Glock, of course, denied there were any problems and quietly fixed the issue in the Gen3/4 (no one quite knows how). Also, Pearce +1 extensions. Sorry to hear about your tragic loss.

74 The taurus is used. I tried to find something that said what the average trigger pull is on it, but my google-foo failed. (the specs on the taurus site don't include that info). I thought I found something at least once that said it was in the 8 lb range, but I might be making that up. Also, I might just be spoiled. My first pistol is a Walther PPQ and the trigger is sweet. So that's exactly what I expected. I bought the taurus when I went to pick up the Baretta Neos .22 I had on lay away (no ammo, so no real rush to get it paid off.) That trigger feels like it has sand in it. Maybe that will smooth out with use. (It's funny shooting the .22. The hole in the paper is so small and the kick so non existent that on a noisy range I'm never quite sure if it fired or not.)

Eh "sorta" don't do it yourself.

You can take the weapon to a gunsmith and have it modified within Police Department parameters.  I've read here it's a good idea to get friendly with your County's Police Armorer. You can send a written work order for precisely what your goals for the work are.

Stress "reliability" and "accuracy" not "speed" in the work order, and CC your lawyer on the matter.

Lawyer, just as important for concealed carry as your holster choice IMHO.

95 Dave,
I would have to get the remainder of the receiver completed by monday, and just don't have the time.

So, I am cheating, and solving the issue with money instead of brains on my end.

On the plus side, following the 2A issues on mdshooters.com, it looks like it could be popcorn and soda time coming up.

Anyhow, had a nice visit to Thunderstick in Fawn Grove PA last week.
May have to head up there for some mags in a week or two.

98 Can some of you tell me where you have had these tragic boat accidents with your guns because I'm thinking of getting my scuba certification so I can go gun collecting. Plus, I need to go look for my guns that I lost in an unfortunate boating accident.

99 OT -- I had my 4-month-old male kitten neutered last Monday. Does anyone know how long I have to leave that cone collar on him? He hates it, and it messes up his balance, but I also don't want him hurting himself if I take it off too early.

Posted by: Empire1 at September 29, 2013 12:36 PM (et5ZX)

100 Empire, Until the vet gives the clear or the stitches are taken out. If it didn't have any stitches, I would think the cone could come off as long as there is no bleeding or other discharges, but call the vet first.

102 AJPS -- Thanks. No, he's had no problems (well, except with the collar), and the tiny incisions look healed, but yes, I'll check with my regular vet tomorrow. (She recommended the Delaware SPCA, since they do a whole lot more cats than she does -- her primary patients are military working dogs, then pets for AD/retired military.) Ghost is the first male critter I've won this discussion about, but I was pretty sure the males healed a lot faster than a female would from spaying, but the instructions they hand out made no distinction.

108 That featured weapon... is that one of those AR-15 shotguns I've read about? By the way, the pic is badly formatted on the comments page. Looks okay in the front page preview and the by-itself post page, though, and this seems 'way late for it not to be fixed, so maybe it's me?

109 Always thought that was a crazy little gun. Almost impossible to hit something.

We had the flatbottom loaded to the gills and damn if it didn't tump over as we tried to go across to get to the other side.

It is not hard to hit something with a Sten gun.  It is just hard to hit something in particular.

True enough.

113 You can make your own semi-auto version with a parts kit and a piece of pipe you drill out yourself to make the receiver. Heavy as hell, but they shoot up a storm!

114 Something doesn't look kosher about the muzzle of the Sten gun pictured.  It appears to have a "bird cage" flash suppressor, something that no original Sten ever had.

Anybody interested in the history of the Sten machine carbine (Brit for submachine gun), should get a copy of Collector Grade Publications' "The Sten Machine Carbine" by Peter Laidler.

115 I'm not sure that I'd put STEN and awesome in the same sentence. The guys that actually had to use them in combat would ditch them for a German MP40 or an American M3 "Grease Gun" (Source: Pegasus Bridge)

Posted by: Max Entropy at September 29, 2013 04:42 PM (Hc0n6)

116 The Tommy gun was better in some ways. It at least could be aimed for a 25 yard (standard pistol open sight range) hit. But it did so a great weight. Always an eye opener for a first timer picking one up. The 200 round magazine tended to be useless and irritating. It had to be hand loaded and then cranked. It was noisy. People simply preferred the M1 carbine, particularly in the Pacific. The Tommy also had another problem. It was very expensive to make. About $10K in today's dollars. Ridiculous. That is why the grease gun came about. Almost in .30 Carbine . The M2 was the answer to that desire. While both the soldiers stationed in Europe and those in the Philippines complained about the .30 stopping power, it was actually superior to the .45ACP, you just took a bit longer to realize you were hit. My father told me while those who were issued the gun complained about stopping power, no one ever traded for the Garand. LOL. You just hung next to a guy that had to carry one.

I liked the M3 more than the Thompson It's slow rate of fire made it easier to control. If it wasn't for the sear wear problem it would have been perfect. Never drop an M3 if it had a worn sear.

118 Dead thread, I know, but I gotta comment.  I saw a tanker in the chow line at a Ft. Hood mess hall with an M3 over his shoulder.  That was in 1982--the gun was older than I was....

The magazine came out the side to allow the gun to be fired from a foxhole or fortification without exposing most of the shooter. Not sure if it's true, the caliber was 9mm luger as the brits captured millions of rounds in North Africa. The color was black as that makes it more lethal.
