Don't Forget About Amensty
— DrewM

ObamaCare repeal/delay is getting a lot of attention during the August recess but don't forget they'll be back pushing amnesty soon enough.

The Democrats and their MSM wing are doing their part. In his headline post Gabe had the story of a little girl who asked a GOP Congressman about how he could help stop her father from being deported. The Congressman handled it ok. He wasn't dismissive of the little girl and complimented her on her courage to ask the question but then gave a kind of flat "the laws the law" answer. Now, there's not much you can say to a little kid in that case but in addition to talking to the kid and the people in the hall, Republicans need to realize they are talking to the whole country (or will be if they screw up) compliments of Democratic "trackers" and a compliant media.

So what should opponents say? If they are faced with a kid they should be nice and recognize that the kid doesn't care about policy. Say something nice and then make it clear they are addressing the adults.

First it's important to remind people that this isn't about singling out illegal aliens and their families. US citizens break the law and get separated from their kids all the time. There's no reason why we should feel worse for kids of illegal immigrants than we do those kids who are punished for things they didn't do.

Then remind the audience that being anti-amnesty actually means supporting other people, people who haven't broken our laws....

People who are waiting years to come here legally and be reunited with their families deserve our sympathy. The also deserve a legal immigration system that isnÂ’t bogged down by processing the claims of millions of people who jumped the line and came here illegally.

We should remember the kids of parents who have had their identity stolen by illegal immigrants or brokers who cater to illegals. It must be awful for a child when your parents are stressed by being the victim of a crime, have to spend a lot of money to get their good name back or canÂ’t buy a house or a car because someone has wrecked their credit history.

And mostly we should remember the children of Americans who canÂ’t find work or make less money than they would otherwise because millions of illegal aliens are taking jobs from their parents or driving their wages down.

So while IÂ’m not unsympathetic to this young girlÂ’s fears, sheÂ’s not the only one with skin in the game. Maybe we could occasionally remember the people her dad and people like him are hurting. It might even make people realize we are compassionate too.

On another front, Politico has a piece on the death of the GOP in California. Naturally the solution proposed by many California Republicans is...amnesty.

Considering the rise in the state's Hispanic population basically tracks with the downward spiral of the GOP there, I'm unclear on how amnesty helps the problem.

To believe amnesty will win votes now or in the future requires you to believe that on average Hispanics support the policies that are destroying their state's economy simply out of spite for the GOP's opposition to amnesty.

Personally, I don't believe Hispanics as a group are stupid. I think they vote overwhelmingly for Democrats and big government because...on average they are Democrats who support big government. Supporting amnesty is not going to change that.

If your Congressman is holding an event, go and bring up amnesty. If they are in hiding like mine, contact them.

3 We will lose the messaging on this.

The only way to save this is to pass individual bills dealing with immigration.  The House needs to pass a border security bill.  Then it needs to pass a strong bill with new protections against visa overstay, including biometric identification.

Then, tell the Senate and Obama if they pass those bills and act on them, they (the GOP House) will consider talking about limited amnesty - perhaps for DREAM kids, etc - and work visas.

5 The death of the GOP in CA is a suicide, not murder.  The state leadership has been actively working to destroy the base's power and support since 1996 at least.

6 When are the Republicans going to catch on to this trick? They used a sick kid to push for ObamaCare, they used Cindy Sheehan to protest the war, etc. There will always be a perfect victim. Either find your own victim (a legal immigrant following the rules) or craft a good rebuttal.

The bedrock principle of this nation is that we adhere to the rule of law, not the whim of Man.

Going up to a Congressman and asking him about your deported parents smacks to me of a peasant going up to a Bishop and asking about a Papal indulgence.  Such things sicken me.  It sickened me when a parent was asking Chris Christie to sign the Marijuana bill to save his kid, it sickened me when the parents of that kid petitioned to get her onto the adult list for a lung, and it sickens me here.

Drew, you have a very perceptive point - the pop culture and LIVs are very concerned about the kids of illegal immigrants, but nary a thought is expressed over the kids of the legal citizens victimized by illegals.  A fellow who was in construction his entire life forced onto the public dole by illegals?  A teenager who can't get an entry level job because an illegal is doing it?  Broken eggs.

About 1 month ago the local news ran a story about a 13 year old girl who discovered that her identity had been stolen and used by at least 4 people on job and entitlement applications. Yeah, she had a latino surname. They interviewed her mother, one of the employers who had unknowingly hired one of the identity thieves, and some state official.
Strangely, they never got around to discussing who might have used her identity and why. Nope, they just discussed what checks were in place to catch this sort of thing and why the system didn't work. Amazing amount of denial.

22 There is no such thing as an "average" Hispanic.

The difference in attitude towards government and institutions varies wildly by region.

ex. Mexicans may trust govt a LOT more than Guatemalans or Salvadorans.

The distrust is so high here in south FL, many in the central American enclaves literally walk around with their life savings, many many thousands of dollars, in their pocket because they don't trust banks.  When robbed, they don't report to the police either, because they don't trust the police to not rob them again.

Various "outreach" programs to try and get them to trust US institutions and put their money in banks and call the police have largely been ineffective.

I know La Raza and others started saying "illegal alien is raaaaacist!" but we really need to ignore them and continue using the correct legal term- illegal alien.

35 One more thing.. concentrating on Hispanics is wrong.. we need to change the face of immigration.

There are millions here on visa overstays, and they aren't Hispanics.  They look more like our notion of ME terrorists than Juan Valdez.

We need to start a movement to out these illegals.  They are working illegally in 7-11's, Dunkin Donuts.. everywhere.  Some of them came for a visit and simply never went home.  Some of them came on H-1B visas and simply stayed - waiting for their opportunity to legally re-enter the workforce and take more of our jobs away.

76 So while IÂ’m not unsympathetic to this young girlÂ’s fears, sheÂ’s not the only one with skin in the game. Maybe we could occasionally remember the people her dad and people like him are hurting. It might even make people realize we are compassionate too. Yeah. About that. I have not an ounce of compassion for people who will use a child like that. In fact, it ups my not give a shit about what the kid's parents went through to get here to 11,000% of capacity. I stand by my response this morning that the proper response to the adults who put her up to this is FYNQ. No, seriously, it is. This is a when did you stop beating your wife question. This is pathetic, pathetic, emotionally manipulative bullshit. I am beyond sick to death of these bullshit stunt questions. I mean, I can come up with a metric fuckton myself. "Ms. Pelosi, why do you think I'm too stupid to make my own financial decisions?" "Mr. Reid, why won't you let the authorities check the crawl spaces at your house?" "Ms. Wasserman-Schultz, here. This is my stylist's card. The woman's a miracle worker, really, and I know she can help you." You want to know why we can't have grown up discussions about grown up problems? Because one side insists on using actual children to hide behind. Why did I use up all my E tickets for this ride? Why?

95 The word "illegal" must be used. MUST be. It would help if we stopped using the word "Hispanic" altogether. It would REALLY help if conservatives would stop using "Hispanic" as a synonym for either "illegal alien" or "Mexican." Well, the lunatics are running the asylum. These illegals came here voluntarily, they CHOSE this life. Yet their supposed "suffering" is the problem that needs to be addressed. No. The problem is the ruling class's contempt for law that allowed this invasion in the first place.

Almost all deportations of illegals are the result of criminal behavior.  YOu get the occasional deportation as a result of a workplace enforcement raid, but for the most part it's because they were arrested.

Nobody (the MSM in particular) bothers asking the little girl what her father did to get himself deported.

As it stands now, illegals face almost no chance of deportation if they keep their heads down and don't get caught driving drunk, committing sex crimes, etc.

129 Walter Russell Mead:

President Obama has had a rude awakening in the Middle East. The region he thought existed was an illusion built on American progressive assumptions about the way the world works. In the dream Middle East, democracy at least of a sort was just around the corner. Moderate Islamists would engage with the democratic process, and the experience would lead them to ever more moderate behavior. If America got itself on the “right side of history,” and supported this hopeful development, both America’s values and its interests would be served. Our relationships with the peoples of the Middle East would improve as they saw Washington supporting the emergence of democracy in the region, and Al Qaeda and the other violent groups would lose influence as moderate Islamist parties guided their countries to prosperity and democracy.

This vision, sadly, has turned out to be a mirage, and Washington is discovering that fact only after the administration followed the deceptive illusion out into the deep desert. The vultures are circling now as American policy crawls forlornly over the dunes; with both the New York Times and the Washington Post running “what went wrong” obituaries for the President’s efforts in Egypt, not even the MSM can avoid the harsh truth that President Obama’s Middle East policies have collapsed into an ugly and incoherent mess.

... this belies the irrational symbiosis between Muslims and Progressives in the US

You know what I hope?

I hope that Obama    will be    giving a    live    press conference at some   point in the near future,    and at this press conference I would like one of the MFM hacks in the   audience to lob him a planted question.     Something along the lines of,  "Mr.    President, there has been talk    lately   that your extensive use of Executive Orders to circumvent    Congress is counter to   the duties required of the President by the Constitution.     That, essentially, what you're doing is illegal.   How would you answer those allegations, Mr. President?"

And I hope that Obammy,   illiterate as he is in matters of history, and overflowing as he does with pomposity and hubris, will     abandon the teleprompter and answer off the cuff:      "Well first off,    (reporter's name), when the President does it, it's not illegal."

Because you   know he thinks it.   And you know he's too stupid to realize what he'd said.

The United States is a country that is governed by a system of laws.  When people break those laws, they must face the consequences.  Every day, little girls like you are mistreated by parents who break laws, and then leave their children to suffer more of the consequences.

In some cases, other people's kids suffer because someone broke laws.  Like when <illegal immigrant drunk driver killed story>

This has nothing to do with which law was broken.  If your Daddy broke the law, he has to face the consequences, or else the laws mean nothing."

Because we're more comfortable with that with which we're familiar, and statistics are what they are. If the Black Community wanted me to do differently, they'd self-police to explain "that culture" (the drug/thug culture which is highly prevalent) is not "our culture." I don't hold much respect for the white guy with the tattoos on his arms and neck wearing the stained wife-beater, either. Don't blame me for race relations in 2013. IMO?  Unless we militarize the border (which I'm actually for, but will never happen)... we cannot 'control' the border... its too long...

BUT... simply enforcing the identity theft laws... the fraud laws... most of which ARE State laws... and then telling them once caught that, as this IS a State Law, we will not chase you across international borders... here... you have a court date in 90 days...

Self Deport for the win....

They would not be here if they FEARED our Law..... if they FEARED getting caught.... but they know that we are not enforcing our own laws...

Off-topic, but there's only so much banging of my head against a brickwall that I can stand in an hour.

Electro-shock therapy sees a resurgence, despite controversial past

WTSP (Tampa, FL): http://tinyurl.com/mlcu27a

Fort Myers, Florida (News-Press) -- The patients are rolled on gurneys into a small screened-off area at Park Royal Hospital every 15 minutes with assembly line regularity.

One is a woman in her 60s, who, like the others, gets a momentary jolt of electricity sent through her head, causing a brain seizure and her body to tense for several seconds. The hope: That this treatment - the electroconvulsive, or "electro-shock," therapy - will ease the symptoms of her bipolar disorder that has so far not responded well to drugs.

The procedure, one of thousands performed at Park Royal since the 76-bed hospital opened last year, has worked on the woman in the past, says Dr. Ivan Mazzorana, who performs all of them on patients here. And, he said, it's likely to do so again.

These days, the treatment goes by its more clinical-sounding acronym, "ECT."

"When you bring it up, most people say, 'Oh my God! Not ECT, that's something from the past,'" Mazzorana said. "It's a very simple procedure, safer, and it's a lot quicker than the medication."...

I can almost guarantee you -- GUARANTEE -- that there will be idiot leftwing     Luddites who, when they   discover such a "resurgence," will begin protesting and calling ECT   "barbaric."    The same idiots who protest against vaccines.

200 First it's important to remind people that this isn't about singling out illegal aliens and their families. US citizens break the law and get separated from their kids all the time. There's no reason why we should feel worse for kids of illegal immigrants than we do those kids who are punished for things they didn't do. Bingo. Apparently, anyone who has kids now has the right to break any law they want and be a completely incompetent employee, because if they are arrested or fired, their kids will be hurt by that. It boggles my mind that we have to tip-toe around saying that people need to follow the laws of this country or face the consequences.

206 192 How is someone's skin color relevant to how they present themselves? It's not within their control. ---------- Because we're more comfortable with that with which we're familiar, and statistics are what they are. I'll not hold your skin color against you- but if you're going to dress according to stereotypical norms, I'm going to consider you a stereotypical sample. ---------- You said this: "Until then, I'll judge you based on your looks- and, yes, that includes the color of your skin." So I guess your nuanced position is that if a white kid is wearing a hoodie that is not going to raise the same flags for you as if a black kid is wearing one. Really disappointed to hear you and others here embrace that position. I think it's fundamentally unAmerican and intellectually lazy.

1) Not a racial profiler.  A big-picture profiler.  Dress, demeanor, skin color, age, gender. Not illegal, unless including race in police descriptions is illegal.

2) Hell of a jump to implying AllenG and I are guilty of illegal activities in the workplace. That earns you a hearty GFY, long time poster or not. I suggest you take your holier-than-thou and shove it where the crime statistics apparently don't shine.

My viewpoint is admittedly cynical, but no one of any color or background gets a pass from me until they prove themselves personally, and I sure as shit am not going to sacrifice some readiness and safety just so someone won't call me racist.

If we take a lead role in immigration reform, we can shape it so that we know who is in the country, where they work, where they live, we can have background checks, take fingerprints and DNA, delay any possible hope of citizenship for at least 20 years, limit benefits, have the ability to recover costs from their home country, be able to deport criminals and undesirables quickly and easily plus many other things.

If we leave this to the liberals, there will be 15 million new democrat voters before the next election.

258 198 MWR Back around 1960, we went to church with a family, the dad was the police chief. They lost a child in an auto accident. Her mourning period lasted more than a month, so he had his wife submitted for electoshock therapy until she simply wasn't "there" any more even though she still took up the same "space" as before. Before the shock, while she would easily cry, she was still herself. But after the electorshocks, she was like a rag doll. That decade, another mother in our congregation lost her son in the Vietnam War, and just couldn't get over it quickly. Same thing; husband had her go through electroshock after which she no longer spoke with congregants, in her case because she just quit leaving home to go out in public after the electroshock therapy. Those women were turned into near mutes, shadows of themselves, and they NEVER got better after the electroshocks. At least while they were mourning, they were still themselves, and only crying on occasion. But after the "therapy" they became completely withdrawn instead of a little withdrawn and still "there" with their eyes connecting, and listening intently instead of seeming deaf and mute. So yeah, I don't like the idea that electroshock therapy is endorsed, particularly when ObamaCare will utilize the LEAST EXPENSE when "treating" patients according to the bureaucratic determined "best" means to THEIR ends.

266 If our team writes the immigration bill, we will decriminalize people here illegally, get all their information and have a clause that provides for immediate deportation if they are caught registering to vote or voting in an election. How cute. Let's say you're right, and that's really what happens. About 10 minutes after the law goes into effect, some newly "legalized" illegal alien undocumented worker tries to register to vote, is denied (and threatened with deportation) and the ACLU and La Raza step in to sue the US Government on 14th Amendment grounds. Then, CJ John Roberts finds "it's a tax," and strikes down that part of the law- allowing 12 million more new Democrat voters. But I don't think "our" (that is: your) team will really write such a tough law. That would make them "mean" and they can't stand people not thinking well of them.

271 The politician could have explained to the girl that all nations must have laws (rules), or there will be chaos. He could have asked her if she'd ever seen another kid trying to push his way into the front of a line --either in school, or at an amusement park, etc. He could have explained that the kid was breaking the rules, and that his rule-breaking had to be punished because we need rules in order to have fairness and safety and order in society. The politician could have explained to the little girl that her father made a choice to break the law (the rules) and push himself ahead in the line of people waiting to get into this country legally, and that was a bad choice and the wrong thing to do, and that her father knew in advance that his bad choice could have consequences that would negatively affect his family -- but he did it anyway. Put the blame where it belongs -- on the lawbreakers.

287 247 I have no idea what that refers to. But the truth is that ECT really does WORK. People who could have been helped by it have instead been scared away for years because of inaccurate pop cultural portrayals. What it refers to is that people in this country aren't swayed by medical evidence or reason/logic, but if some star on the Idiot Box does something, somehow it's now mainstream to most of America. No doubt it's helped people and will continue to help people. Just like vaccines and countless other technologies.

299 Death by 1000 cuts, and no way to stop the bleeding from all of them. Or with this GOP, any of them. Posted by: grognard at August 19, 2013 12:13 PM Yep, Saul Alinsky's Cloward Piven Strategy in action. http://bit.ly/1akLEkI One of two things must be true. Either the Democrats are unfathomable idiots, who ignorantly pursue ever more destructive policies despite decades of contrary evidence, or they understand the consequences of their actions and relentlessly carry on anyway because they somehow benefit. I submit to you they understand the consequences. For many it is simply a practical matter of eliciting votes from a targeted constituency at taxpayer expense; we lose a little, they gain a lot, and the politician keeps his job. But for others, the goal is more malevolent - the failure is deliberate. Don't laugh. This method not only has its proponents, it has a name: the Cloward-Piven Strategy. It describes their agenda, tactics, and long-term strategy. The Strategy was first elucidated in the May 2, 1966 issue of The Nation magazine by a pair of radical socialist Columbia University professors, Richard Andrew Cloward and Frances Fox Piven. David Horowitz summarizes it as: The strategy of forcing political change through orchestrated crisis. The "Cloward-Piven Strategy" seeks to hasten the fall of capitalism by overloading the government bureaucracy with a flood of impossible demands, thus pushing society into crisis and economic collapse. Cloward and Piven were inspired by radical organizer [and Hillary Clinton mentor] Saul Alinsky: "Make the enemy live up to their (sic) own book of rules," Alinsky wrote in his 1989 book Rules for Radicals. When pressed to honor every word of every law and statute, every Judeo-Christian moral tenet, and every implicit promise of the liberal social contract, human agencies inevitably fall short. The system's failure to "live up" to its rule book can then be used to discredit it altogether, and to replace the capitalist "rule book" with a socialist one. (Courtesy Discover the Networks.org) Newsmax rounds out the picture: Their strategy to create political, financial, and social chaos that would result in revolution blended Alinsky concepts with their more aggressive efforts at bringing about a change in U.S. government. To achieve their revolutionary change, Cloward and Piven sought to use a cadre of aggressive organizers assisted by friendly news media to force a re-distribution of the nation's wealth. [ ... ] No matter where the strategy is implemented, it shares the following features: The offensive organizes previously unorganized groups eligible for government benefits but not currently receiving all they can. The offensive seeks to identify new beneficiaries and/or create new benefits. The overarching aim is always to impose new stresses on target systems, with the ultimate goal of forcing their collapse.

Why should a fucking politician be telling you what you can and cannot do? This is fucking America." Dana's no social con. Very libertarianish. And he mainly cares about getting rich off UFC. Everyone knows the narrative for increased immigration/open borders: It's only Faaaair, Immigration is the holiest sacrament of America, etc.

The Right has never offered a counter to those and, if they don't come up with something just as powerful, just as easily understood, it's a lost battle.

I wanted to be able to look at someone wearing a hoodie and say "hey, that's a nice hoodie." But Blacks- represented by the likes of Jesse Jackson and Al Sharpton- among others- decided that I had to care about race. They decided that race should be given consideration in how I feel about someone (specifically someone I don't know). If that's going to be the case, that's going to be the case. And the simple fact is: the white kid in a hoodie is probably just some hipster douche wearing a hoodie. The black kid wearing a hoodie is probably *not*. But I bet that more illegals would give pause to giving false info if told that it means no more Free Shit. Which brings up the larger issue that "in the shadows" is exactly right for illegals, which is cousin to the concept of self deportation. If you're not comfortable giving citizenship info i.e. here illegally then you should be relegated to crappy jobs, no benefits, and fearing imprisonment.
