When you hear someone say "We all need to take care of each other", what they're really saying is "I want someone to take care of me". Socialism is the creed of the deluded, the lazy, the timid, the dull, and the inept. People who desire it are either children or adults with the minds of children. Socialism in whatever guise is not just a silly ideology; it’s an impossible ideology. It violates the principle of ex nihilo nihil fit (nothing comes from nothing). You cannot draw more energy out of a system than you put into it. Socialism whispers sweet nothings into the ears of the dullards, but reality speaks more bluntly: “If you don’t work, you don’t eat.” And reality always wins. Always.
ObamaCare's inaugural week wasn't exactly the success that Democrats hoped for. In fact, it was pretty much exactly the kind of fiasco that we Doubting Thomases have been predicting it would be ever since this abomination of a law was passed. But it's important to remember that the IT infrastructure of ObamaCare is the least of its problems. IT problems can be fixed, given time and money. But this law's basic design is so horrible that no amount of IT wizardry can make it work. The lousy rollout of ObamaCare is testament to the government's essential inability to execute on large, complex projects like this, to be sure; but it's also a vanguard of the larger problems yet to come. Debt is the threat.
Part of the reason people aren't rushing for the exits is that the comedy they are watching is so horribly fascinating.
If a debt was run up in my name but without my knowledge or consent, I have no obligation (ethically) to repay that debt. ItÂ’s a fundamental precept of contract law, going all the way back to ancient times. We, as a society, are running up enormous debts and laying the burden of repayment on our children and grandchildren. They will be fully justified if they repudiate this debt.
Art Laffer and Stephen Moore pronounce Obamanomics a dead parrot. To be fair, I don't think Obama's aim was ever to rehabilitate the economy; it was to advance a social agenda at whatever the cost. And he was re-elected on that platform.
I always say this: economics is human behavior, not math. Traditional economics tends to presume rational actors moving through ideal environments, which obviously is rarely the case in the real world. Hence, the academics get it wrong far more often than they get it right. When you ignore the human element and focus only on the numbers, you miss most of what economics really is.
This is a variant of the “credit card carry”: using one low-interest-rate credit card to pay off another, higher-rate card. Which is fine, as long as you pay off the debt and don’t borrow any more. But people being who they are, the spending patterns do not change and people end up with two cards to pay off instead of just one, and a net debt that has doubled (or tripled, or quadrupled).
10 fallacies used to justify opulent government pensions.
This may be depressing, but it's not exactly news: many people are financially illiterate. This has always been the case, and it's not clear to me that more education will help.
Kwame Kilpatrick may have done his part to kill Detroit, but the blame ultimately lies with the people who voted for him. People in democracies get the government they deserve.
Here's an interesting article about what a loss of civic virtue can mean to a civilization. Now, the practice of damning a society for being a worthless sink of vice is as old as society itself, but I think there is some truth to the idea that with great material wealth and plenty there comes also an impoverishment of spirit. It often seems to me that many Americans must be "incentivized" to do the necessary: to have children, to get married, to vote, to save money, even to work for a living. How have we come to this point?
One of the principles I've always lived by is that, most of the time, there's no reward for doing the right thing. No pat on the back, no promotion, no bonus payment, no certificate, no trophy, no party. No one's going to congratulate me for doing something I should be doing anyway. This is not injustice. That's just the way things are. That's how things should be. A person who understands this can live in the world as it is with no fear. Understanding this fact is an essential step in learning how to function as an adult.
When I was a kid my mom was relentless about teaching me to be a "gentleman". Hold the door for ladies. Pull out her chair. Dress nicely and don't use vulgar language. Be respectful. If it's raining and she has no umbrella, shelter her with my jacket. Perhaps the deepest lesson my mom taught me is this: my "reward" for sheltering someone from the rain with my jacket might be nothing but a wet coat. It doesn't matter if the other person rewards me, or even acknowledges the gesture. In the end, I'm not doing it for them. I'm doing it because it's the right thing to do.
Life is getting up every morning and doing the necessary, and then getting up the next day and doing it all over again. Sometimes we do this right up until death interrupts the process. This is not sad or tragic. It's how life always was, is, and ever shall be. We find joy in our families, in our amusements, and in the work or in the things that our work makes possible. We carry our share of the load, or even a bit more to spare the weak or lame. We do not shirk, because shirking increases the burden others must carry.
And that's how civilization endures.
When I was a child, I spake as a child, I understood as a child, I thought as a child: but when I became a man, I put away childish things. - 1 Corinthians 13:11

1) idealists or lazy assholes who want to be taken care of
2) the guy who wants to be in charge of the taking care of....

Socialism works great for the elite in charge.
Also, people who submit to socialism don't do it because they don't want to work. The vast majority are willing to work hard if they are freed of responsibility.
They want to be told what to do, when to do it, how to do it and so on in exchange for a guarantee of their basic needs. A parent/child relationship.
Certainly, there are a percentage of loafers who want something for nothing, but the vast majority of socialist accepting people are frightened sheep who desperately want to be told what to do.

I've always wondered about this - creditors eventually die or go bankrupt. After strange eons, cannot debt itself die?

Debt is a lot like the negative zone of Intellectual Property....
Once upon a time yes you could outrun the reaper and death was a get out of jail free card, BUT given that most debt is corporate based I'd say no.
Mick E Maus is still Walt's despite the old laws....
we are on pace to have people again inheriting their father's and grandfather's debt much to our detriment as a society.

For all those idjits who say Obamacare is the law of the land - like the Dems and squishy sector of the GOP:
Do we have to live with bad law, or is it our right and duty to change it if it is bad for this country and we donÂ’t want it?
If we have to live with it, then shouldn't we live with the Dred Scott Decision, the separate but equal doctrine, Prohibition, and only men having the right to vote?

I taught my son to do the right thing. It actually paid off for him. One time he volunteered to help an older lady haul her groceries out to her car and she gave him 2 dollars. Now this was a few yrs ago and #1 it surprised the lady that a kid his age would even offer to help and #2 shocked the hell outta my boy that she would give him money for just helping carry stuff.
And yet, this is what people are not teaching kids anymore. They demand that everyone get a trophy for participating because no one should have hurt feelings. This has brought us a whole army of kids who think they should get special treatment just for getting out of bed.

I used to remind both my bosses and the clients at my old firm that the client's emotional state had a dollar value and only the client could tell me what it was. We had clients who were terrified of going to court and thus would take less in settlement than we would likely have gotten at trial because they would not go to court. We had clients who were adamant that they have their day in court and thus rejected excellent settlement offers and ended up with far lower verdicts. In neither case did I think that the person was acting contrary to their best interests. Instead, they were placing a tangible value on an intangible good. That is life. Needless to say, my bosses hated this because we got screwed out of fees but, as I reminded them, that was the risk to which they agreed when they decided to go into a practice area in which their pay was contingent. Life is getting up every morning and doing the necessary, and then getting up the next day and doing it all over again. There's a reason that the ALL THE THINGS post resonated so well. It's because being an adult is precisely that. Doing it over and over and over again with no end in sight. The All The Things post for those who haven't read it - http://bit.ly/cN31fS I must admit to being at the last stage of that process at the moment right now. I've read the article on repudiating the debt and shall have to ponder it more. I don't necessarily disagree on a philosophical basis but it has practical implications that are significant. Then again, that which cannot be repaid won't so theory is great and all but reality will win. It always does.

We do have that option, but only because we're the U.S.
No other country can unilaterally say that they are changing the rules of the game and that everyone else has to accept it. There is an argument to be made to take this route, although there are reasons to continue playing by the old rules.
My position is that if shit hits the fan to the extent that it would substantially degrade the quality of life in the U.S., it's time to pull the trigger and assert our authority in the world.

Thanks for the DOOOOOOOM Monty. It amazes me that there are so many people out there that work the system so they don't have to work. 60 Minutes covered SS Disability fraud last night. They game the system with Lawyers and crooked Doctors all to get a stipend of about 1100 dollars. If you just applied yourself to a job it should not be too hard to exceed that figure. Somewhere along the way the people have lost all pride. I remember my grandparents working well into their 70's so as not to be dependent on SS or any kind of welfare. Menial jobs. There took pride in what they did and cherished what they had because they earned it. Different world now.

No one's going to congratulate me for doing something I should be doing anyway.
This gets to the heart of why I HATE it when people heap praise on someone -- self included -- for doing their job. When someone asks me, "Hey, MWR. Can you please format this document so it matches the formatting of the other docs in this series," I say, "Okay!" and do it. While it's nice to receive a, "Thank you!" after it's done, it irritates me no end when someone heaps effusive praise on me like I just cured cancer and discovered cold fusion AT THE SAME TIME.
"OMG you're the greatest! Thank you so much! I don't know what we'd do without you!"
I'm guessing what you'd do is figure out how to do it yourself or else not do it at all.
All that praise like that says to me is that we've gotten to a point as a society where just doing the minimum activity required to be considered competent has become a damned milestone. If you actually DO YOUR JOB -- the job you were hired to do, and are expected to do -- it's cause for celebration. How pathetic is that?
And that's just in the workplace. How about in the home? While it's nice and rewarding when strangers compliment a parent on how well-behaved their children are, isn't it less a testament to how good a parent they are and more a testament to how BAD a parent someone else is? "Children should be seen and not heard" isn't just some stuffy Victorian era social expectation; it's basic courtesy that a parent keep their child from acting out in a setting where such behavior is unacceptable. Why is it that we feel okay about complimenting someone on the good behavior of their children, but we feel uncomfortable remarking to someone else about the poor behavior of THEIR children? The former should go without saying; it's the latter that should draw attention.

Maddow neglected to mention that the dam project started in the private sector and was only taken over by the government after FDR's policies wreaked so much economic damage that the funding stalled.
Also, in general it wasn't especially complex. Just physically very large. Countless construction projects of much greater complexity have been executed in the private sector all along. The Empire State Building, for example, is arguably a far more complex object and project.

So, until you can convince enough folks to throw granny to the wolves when she gets to old to fend for herself, then you'll have to fume alone about those who you feel are superfluous to requirements and the oh so exorbitant cost you must bear to allow them to live. (which is what? A dollar? Two? Scrooge Monty to the rescue for all those with iron hearts and tiny souls)
Oh and don't bring up the strawman about how those who want granny to live should pay for granny to live as that already happens. What I mean by granny is someone else's granny who's family is dead or unable to provide for her. In your world, somehow, being unable to predict the future and/or unable to reach financial security is solely the fault of the person's laziness or indolence and never ever caused by any outside circumstances.
I've asked before but you for some reason never answer; what is YOUR past history as far as family support? What is your current status and how did you reach it? How would others without your advantages be able to reach the same place?
It's known fact that we're not all the same. We may have equal rights but we don't have equal abilities. Somehow, you've come to the conclusion that those who have less ability than you have less value and as such can be disregarded, discarded and should be left to die for their inabilities or mistakes.
That's not civilized nor is it in societies best interest. (neither is full on socialism but compromise doesn't seem to be in your lexicon when you write these screeds.

I was on a train a few days ago (going to the moron meet-up) and there was a mother with her teen-aged son sitting behind me. he was obviously autistic, and being a bit difficult, but she was enforcing normal rules of behavior.

I also hate the shit out of proggs and fymynysts conflating "women who make lots of babies without even considering being married to their fathers" with "widows with children" all into "single mothers", to hijack the urge people have to help women who have found themselves in a tough situation through no fault of their own and use it to further the destruction of the social order.

1. I think the issue is with coercion by the govt to take care of people that are perfectly able to assist in their own support and futures stepping into society as a fruitful citizen for their OWN good and personal security in their own personal abilities .. To not have govt shelter able people to think survival Is only possible with the govt paying for your survival Long Term or indefinitely . It does harm somes ability to find personal survivability skills for themselves and their children. which I think is abusive and damaging to that person and family.
only my opinion.

LiveScience conducted a poll of an international group of scientists from a range of disciplines to determine what types of categories modern scientists feel are missing from the Nobel Prizes.
Foremost, many wondered why there is not a prize in mathematics. Tied in second place after mathematics were technology and social sciences. "The most obvious omission are all the social sciences," said Anthony Leiserowitz, director of the Yale Project on Climate Change. "The social sciences are vitally important in understanding human nature, the human condition and how to construct a more sustainable world."

Heather,
thank you! I hate that too. I was a young widow with a 2yr old son. My biggest problem with that was reversed.... i.e. the people who automatically assumed I was either divorced or never married in the first place. They lumped me in with the welfare queens who breed for cash. It was (and still is, even though I'm remarried) extremely offensive.
The idiots who started that shit should have been bitch slapped. A widow with children is not the same as a welfare breeder.

I've asked before but you for some reason never answer; what is YOUR past history as far as family support? What is your current status and how did you reach it? How would others without your advantages be able to reach the same place?
------------
My history is hard-bottom rural poor, but I won't bore you with the details. Suffice it to say that I can claim authentic white trailer-trash roots: our hovel was about a quarter-mile from the interstate, and it was years before I could get to sleep without the sound of big trucks droning by in the night.
As for how I got to where I am: a willingness to work hard. I'm smart, but not *that* smart. I'm lucky, but not *that* lucky. Really, the only thing I have going for me is a willingness to work, and do what is necessary to make a go of life. This principle has stood me in good stead all these years.
But if you want to believe that I am some Olympian superman from a long line of super-wealthy plutocrats, go ahead. You may also believe that I am devilishly handsome and a demon with the ladies. BECAUSE IT'S TOTALLY TRUE.

EXACTLY. And in cases like that it's understood by everyone that the child is not necessarily acting out because s/he is misbehaving, so some leeway is allowed. But as with that mother, it is still incumbent upon the parent to try and keep their child under control.
You must adapt your behavior to the environment in which you find yourself; you mustn't expect the environment to adapt to YOU. You don't build an igloo in the Everglades even if you've always wanted to live in an igloo, and you don't throw basic social and work conventions out the window even if adhering to them is difficult.

In your world, it is somehow our fault that bad things happen to people. Why are we to be culpable for that?
If it worries you, you should pay for the granny you don't know. Confiscating other people's money to do so doesn't make you a good person. It makes you an asshole.
Let people choose to help each other, and you will be surprised by the results. Force them, and you will have a bankrupt system where apathetic people think it is the government's problem.

History is not a nitpicky social science, but it falls under the umbrella sometimes. Polling is more about statistics which is applied math. Some humanities I think are useful.
Economics and anthropology, classic social sciences, some good work gets done. Just nothing which alters the life of our species like fracking, finding the Higgs-boson, or drive-thru restaurants. It is a sign that we now depend on ongoing financial assistance from foreign countries to finance our Government's reckless fiscal policies. Increasing America 's debt weakens us domestically and internationally. Leadership means that, 'the buck stops here.' Monty--
Your words resonate with me:"Perhaps the deepest lesson my mom taught me is this: my "reward" for sheltering someone from the rain with my jacket might be nothing but a wet coat. It doesn't matter if the other person rewards me, or even acknowledges the gesture. In the end, I'm not doing it for them. I'm doing it because it's the right thing to do."
We recently had our 30 year HS reunion. One of our classmates sadly reaped what he had sown throughout high school. In his effort to reconnect with his classmates (he did graduate)he was arrested for trespassing at the HS and although he is homeless, found a way to be there.
The classmates who managed not to mature were surely making fun of his dress of plaid shorts, prints with boots and a leather jacket. They ridiculed him behind his back and in a place he could not defend himself.
To me and those who get it, it was a miracle that he was still alive. I admonished them for their childish ways and let them know that kindness costs nothing and that helping him would have been more rewarding.
My grandpa sold Knights of Columbus insurance. He often came home without the coat he had worn when he left. When my Gram would say, 'Oh Rock! Again?" He would pull his morning newspaper from under his shirt that had insulated him for the rest of the day and reply, "I drive and move from out to in. Someone needed my coat more than I did. What's a newspaper good for?" And he would kiss her and move on.
