Where the DOOM flows like water
— Monty

DOOOOM

The basic atom of society is not the individual human being; it is the family. If the family is destroyed, so is society. ItÂ’s really just that simple.

Family is society writ small, where one builds basic human capital, social capital, and skills. In Schulz’s calculation, family is a basic, vital economic unit—the X factor. Family builds empathy and self-control, which in turn shapes character. Character fosters human capital (“knowledge, education, habits, willpower”) and social capital (assets “created and maintained by relationships of commitment and trust”), which ultimately generates economic growth. You could practically build a formula out of it.

As grim as the much-touted $16 trillion of national debt is, it's nowhere near the real number. The real number is probably closer to $70 trillion dollars. For perspective, that's about 80% of the total global economic output for an entire year. Raise your hands, now: who thinks that this mind-boggling sum will ever be repaid in full?

The “foodstamps for cash” pipeline. Wasn’t SNAP supposed to end this problem?

Does it really come as any surprise to anyone who is not completely deluded that China is overstating their GDP? I've never bought into the myth that the 21st century is the "Chinese century". Chinese history is basically a long, sad tale of China almost succeeding and then finding ways to fail. I don't think this era will be any different. Has there ever been a time when being poor didnÂ’t suck? This is still a better time to be poor than any other time in human history.

The really bad news behind the drop in jobless claims.

Cisco to 4000 workers: BAM!

The pension tsunami is engulfing towns, counties, states. The latest victim: Contra Costa county. California is so boned.

Speaking of California being boned: the teen unemployment rate in California is now right around 33%.

When I say that municipal bankruptcies can lead to unexpected problems, this is what IÂ’m talking about.

Just a reminder; the Euro crisis is not over. Did anyone really think that it was, though?

So...this is where weÂ’re at. The USA canÂ’t even make money any more. Literally.

What the government thinks inflation is, and what it really is.

China will be moderately successful because of productivity gains (manual labor ---> mechanized = huge gain) and their longer work week.

But we shouldn't be looking over our shoulders quite yet.

32 So let me see if I have that SNAP sellback story right. A bodega owned by one guy is more likely to end up doing something shady than a local chain of Super Globo Mega Corp where everything is subject to audit three or four times up the line. You. Don't. Say. Monty, there's even more hilarity in the comments to the Detroit story. Apparently a coyote showed up at an Allen Park Meijers. Allen Park didn't used to be frontier land. Moral of that story? Blessed Mother Gaia will reclaim all and Outside will eat you. Here's where I'm at on the public pension stuff. It sucks for the people who have spent the last 30 years planning on getting that pension and so they haven't saved (or invested *see how I pay attention*) their own money. It does. But it's not my fault that they didn't see the handwriting on the wall. It's been obvious for the last 30 years that those promises could not be met. I will not pay the taxes necessary to meet those promises. I won't. I have no sympathy for those who would steal from me to take care of themselves when they refused to open their eyes and see what was coming. I should note that if my investments all go belly up? I don't expect anyone else to take care of me. Feh. A pox on all of them.

The really bad news behind the drop in jobless claims.

Inflation sucks. But wait, it gets worse for production/non-supervisory employees. While the June-to-July drop in inflation-adjusted weekly wages wasn't quite as bad for them as it was overall (-0.48% for produciton/non-supervisory, 0.53% overall), they lost a lot more in inflation-adjusted weekly wages over the last year (-0.42% for production/non-supervisory, -0.09% overall).

Oh yeah, the inflation for urban wage earners/clerical workers (CPI-W, used for the production/non-supervisory numbers), at 2.00%, was a bit worse than the inflation for the inflation for all urban consumers (CPI-U, used for the all-employees numbers), at 1.96%.

Funny. Here in NC the teacher unions are freaking out that Governor McCrory gave them only a 4.5% increase in funding from last year instead of the 6% that they wanted, claiming that they need that extra money due to "inflation" among other things.

Remember when McStain, being his usual asshole pandering self, went on "The View" and was asked by Whoopie Pie if his being elected would return her to slavery?  That senile old bastard could have hammered the softball out of the park if  he'd called her out not only on her utter idiocy  but also on the whole "slavery" bullshit.  Reparations have been paid, bitch.  With blood.  On the fields of Gettysburg, Shiloh, Manassas and Fredericksburg.  You want money?  Go to the congress and get it from the white Democrats who enslaved you, you simpering anal pustle.

Partly I suspect he's there to further his career amongst the GOP and we will benefit from that access, but also he's very much reflective of what the Party leadership is really like, including the dismissive and defensive tone. What Gabe supports, and how he supports it, is *GOP mainstream in DC* and its why the fractures will not heal.

OT

The Battle of Medina occurred on this day in 1813. The Battle of Medina is the bloodiest ever fought on Texas soil. Republican forces of the Gutierrez-Magee expedition fought a Royalist army under General Joaquin Arredondo. 1,400 Republicans faced off against 1,830 Royalists about 20 miles south of San Antonio. The battle ended in a Royalist victory with only about 100 Republicans surviving.  The bodies of the rest were left on the field of battle for nine years.

Among the Royalist officers in the battle was Antonia Lopez de Santa Ana who would later command a Mexican force in a victory in another war of rebellion in nearby San Antonio.

123 As of May 31, 2013, when the CRS analysis was completed, the White House had yet to meet 9 of 12 deadlines from the first year after the Affordable Care Act was enacted. It failed to meet 22 of 53 deadlines in the second year; another 8 became moot after Congress did not appropriate funds to complete the assigned tasks. In year three, the administration missed 10 out of 17 deadlines. ThatÂ’s a total of 41 out of 82 deadlines missed.

If you exclude the 9 deadlines that became moot because Congress never appropriated the funds to meet them, the Obama administration missed 41 out of 73 deadlines, or 56 percent.

152 #132  Yes!  Correct analogy from pop culture!

The day this news first broke Anna Puma and I went digging.

She arrived here with her parents right after Tienanmen Square.  She had a hole in her heart which disappeared. (On this I will tak one of the docs' word here that that sometimes happens.)  They did not return to China.  She got into MIT.  After graduating,  she went to work for Goldman Sachs. After woring there ONE YEAR,  she apparently decided "climing the technology ladder wasn't for her" so she took a job in Sweden in internet retail or something.  (Apparently she left her parents in the states,  or they havve gone back to China.  I can find no info on this.)

Then she got the idea for her internet shopping service for high-end customers,  called AHA.  Then she got "angel investors" (again,  we don't know who) and voila! She is now famous and rich and of ALL the people she could date she winds up with the former Supreme Commander of NATO,  a guy over twice her age,  who just happens to sit on a lot of boards and knows a lot of people in government and the military.

I am suspicious.

154 Families are inherently racist I wouldn't be surprised to hear that meme start up in the next couple of years. We'll be told how Africans, Aborigines, and "Native Americans" all had clan/tribal structures, and the children were raised "communally" with the fathers largely not present (because: hunting), and that its only our Caucasian cultural roots that make us think Family is the building block of society- and so that makes us raaaaacist.

And that's the thing, isn't it? I personally don't care what the color is of a person's skin, so long as their beliefs and values are similar to mine. I would have no problem marrying a black man provided he, too, shared my conservative ideals.

On the left, on the other hand, skin color trumps all.

Luckily only a fraction of those bills are unusable. There is a plan in place to weed out the bad ones.

Late to the party, as usual, but a good DOOM round-up, Monty. As far as the first piece about the family, it is absolutely correct. That is why the progs have been trying to destroy it for a century. It is the only institution, loyalty to which should exceed that to the State. Therefore, it must go. Virtually all of our current problems can traced to its destruction.

171 These 30 million bills was the Treasury's second screw up with the $100 denomination.  So one has to wonder what happened to those bills?  It was costing a small mint to store the defective bills while they sorted that out.  And now we got bills with a 'mashing' problem, ie the ink bled which seems an appropriate analogy for our financial woes.

The Family as Society's Atom is a gem of an analogy.

I wish that when these Leftist economic "trolls" start with their inequality BS, people would respond with choices and opportunities as economic goals, not equality.

179 It's ridiculous for leftists to compare 21st century American society to aboriginal societies and say "It takes a village". We are not a village; We are not a group of 50 people living together In order to get along we do needs friends and/or family members to help out with things, but the basic building block of society here has always been the family and in earlier times the church. If we do not have intact families there is no village caring for the children that don't belong to families. The state doesn't want strong, intact families because of the state is caring for us we will depend on the state. Dependency=Control.

I believe it. The  same goes for the  actual rate of inflation, which is around 8%, not the 1%   or 2%   the government professors say it is. All it takes is a quick perusal of how they arrive at that figure       (by  conveniently excluding all the purchases that families make like groceries and gasoline)    to know that their numbers are manipulated bullshit.

Also note that all those peoples were still living in tents of animal skins or mud huts while the evil white Europeans were writing King Lear, and the family centered Asian cultures had been refining gunpowder for generations, and the Mediterranean cultures gave us Philosophy and aqueducts and the principles of sanitation--yes, I'm going to say that family-based cultures are superior to the tribal cultures.

Is it even clear that this was the way back then anyway? or is that a convenient rewriting of history? It seems to me it's more likely than not the latter.  There's a stark difference between living in a community and having division of labor and "communal children" and entirely different idea.

192 A. Bloom also talked about how the family is a point of resistance to government. When a man gets a wife and children and property, he wants to protect it. He wants to raise his children, he wants to keep his land and his bank accounts. (Of course, women do this too)

So that's the real reason the left wants welfare: it destroys resistance to power.

I remember a story I heard once about a man from India who snuck into the US. He said, "I want to live in a country where the poor people are fat."

"The basic atom of society is not the individual human being; it is the family."  Back to science class for you! The family is analogous to a molecule. You can have a bar of gold with atoms, but not living things, so the rest of the analogy still works.
