DOOM: Now half-price with coupon
— Monty

DOOOOM

Last week no DOOM at all, this week a puny pared-down DOOM hardly worth the name. It's not due to any lack of grim news, I assure you. Next week I shall endeavor to load the DOOM ship to the gunwales before it sets sail.

They'll turn us all into beggars 'cause they're easier to please, as Instapundit often says. But slavery of this kind is not imposed upon a reluctant and conquered people -- it is offered with a smile, and accepted by the grateful recipients with a glad heart. And that's the terrible tragedy of this kind of slavery -- we have not only asked for the chains that bind us, but we forged many of the links ourselves.

Walter Russel Mead has written often about how the the death of the so-called "blue social model" is not a war of white against black or rich against poor, but of the young against the old. This is even more true in Europe than it is here. Europe is in the process of eating its own seed-corn. America is not quite as far down the path as our cousins over on the Continent, but we're getting there -- and our war between young and old may be even more bitter than the one in Europe.

The death of the Westphalian nation-state model may be in progress right now -- bankrupt nation-states are increasingly turning to old-fashioned thievery to pay the bills (though they lay a thin gloss of the law on it and call it "taxation" or "confiscation"). (Like I said: old-fashioned thievery.)

It's not so much that austerity was tried and found too difficult. It's that it was found too difficult and not tried.

If, as I do, you assume that we must tear down before we can rebuild, ObamaCare may be the best gift Democrats have ever given the nation. It's doing a bang-up job of ruining the medical industry already, and it's not even fully implemented yet.

10 Obamacare may wind up being the only entitlement ever to be repealed. My reasoning? When the "entitlement" entitles you to death, misery, pain and suffering (instead of money/freebies), then repeal will be screamed for con gusto. The caveat? Having the politicians who will listen to us.

Funny, I don't  remember voting for a command-and-control Soviet-style economy where everyone is dependent on the   government for handouts.

But that appears to be what  I received.  I thought I was voting for people who recognized the power of  capitalism to lift all the ships in the harbor, where everyone could have a shot at being as self-sufficient as possible and   have as much money   as their pockets could contain. People who saw that Big Government = Smaller Economy, and would work to actually get that government down to a manageable size.

62 - "If, as I do, you assume that we must tear down before we can rebuild, ObamaCare may be the best gift Democrats have ever given the nation." That really is a staggeringly naive and clueless comment; the sort of thing that only can be written much less accepted within the confines of the loopy suburban WASP demographics of the cocooned and detached chattering classes. FYI, countries are not like condemned houses and politics is not like a remodeling job. With that attitude we really are doomed. Ask Detroit, Newark, Chicago, Philly, etc., how the politico-economic "tear down and rebuild" model is working out. Then juxtapose upon the nation at large, albeit ironically enough not in the gated suburban communities which are so prevalent in conservative chattering class circles.

66 U.S. Stocks Find an Excuse in Cyprus

As world markets recoil at the harsh terms of the European Union's bank bailout for tiny Cyprus, expect plenty of soothing words from Stateside market partisans. The this-too-shall-pass crowd will point out the trivial economic profile of the Mediterranean island, decrying traders' knack for overreacting to weekend surprises and reiterating the sturdy economic fundamentals that, they'll tell you, continue to support stock indexes shadow-boxing all-time highs.

There will be no need to turn in the paper currency once it is declared illegal and carries a fine and imprisonment for possession. However, due to the instability of the power grid and sporadic nature of electronic communications, a new paper currency will be issued to replace the old.

78 Ask Detroit, Newark, Chicago, Philly, etc., how the politico-economic "tear down and rebuild" model is working out. It's not being tried, there. Politicians keep promising to "fix it," and never address the structural problems. On the other hand, if you look at some States (Wisconsin and Michigan chief among them), that is what is happening. Those State Governments (now run by Republicans after however many years (decades)) are "tearing down" much of the Government apparatus. And they're seeing huge success in the "rebuilding" phase.

100 What is it with the musicians and their 3 year old "its mine!" attitude? Well, some of it is simply a lack of humor (see also: the Weird Al "Amish Paradise" kerfuffle). Some of it, though, has to do with some of the less savory practices of the music industry through the years- particularly that evil one called "Recoupment." That's the idea that the studio/label is "loaning" the musician/band everything from recording and studio time to the advertising and any touring costs, and so they have to be "repaid" from the record sales (often to the tune of 80%+) leaving the rest of the money to the musician/band. As a result, the bands are very, very jealous of their intellectual property, because that's the only chance they have of surviving their contracts.

115 Are the ones you can get from good food stores good enough, or do I need a super-special sensitive one?

Look at it this way. There are 7,000 grains in one pound. Bullet weights and powder measures are weighed in grains. For example, your average .45 acp full jacket bullet itself is 230 grains, with a powder measure of between (approximately) 3.5 - 7.0 grains depending on the powder you are using for reloading.

But ammunition reloading tools and components will be illegal anyway, comrade, and only gang members and criminals will possess sensitive scales.

Yep. Doctors are going to dwindle due to costs and be largely specialist-only, nurses will take over a lot of general medical functions doing prescriptions, screenings, ordering tests and doing referrals. Which in turn means the ones doing nursing now will be replaced by your local high school dropout who went to a trade school advertising on TV because they'll need to fill some serious holes in the system and will thus, predictably, lower standards.

Isn't that cute?  I loved that.   I especially liked this quote:

No one stops there,” he said. “Why did they choose that place?

Well gosh, maybe they chose that place because they assumed that the hills weren't teeming with brutal rapists.  That's not an unreasonable assumption; or at least it shouldn't be.   Maybe you should try putting up signs that say, "Don't sleep here or you'll be raped, murdered, or otherwise viciously attacked."

"They would have passed a police station on the way to the area they camped. They should have stopped and asked about places to sleep.”

Ah, I see.  So even though there's a police station right in the    vicinity,     the odds of the police actually being able to capture any of the violent criminals currently crawling through the Indian backwoods is so minimal as to be worthless.   The best the police in this area can do is act as tour guides.  "Oh, you'll want to sleep here, not there.  If you sleep there your chances of being raped are 85%.   If you sleep here, though, those odds go down to     50%,    which is a lot better!"

161 It may be a little of column A and a little of column B. Musicians, more than almost any other artist, hate "fair use." So when someone uses a snippet of their song, they're more likely to start threatening C&D orders and such.

And then there's the fact so many of them are just raging leftists, and hate the idea that Republicans can identify with their songs.

So many copyleft heads exploded when Glee decided to use a Jonathon Coulton (geek favorite) Song without contacting him (which he finally found out was legal since his song was a cover of "Baby got back" with a new arrangement.)

I tried to explain this their railing against it made 0 sense given the whole "fair use for everybody!" thing but whatever. (They did give him no credit which was strange.

193 Terrific article in WSJ today, by the estimable Eric Felten, who wrote a whole book's worth of drinks columns for them a few years ago.

It's about how the Cabaret Tax immediately after WWII changed American music. There was a 30% tax on any drinking or dining establishment that offered dance music with a vocalist. There was a bizarre exemption for "mechanical" and "instrumental only" music, so the big bands died overnight, and juke boxes and Be-bop were the immediate rage. You may have thought this was a merely social phenomenon, but it was tax policy pure and simple. Unintended consequence.

Felten has skin in the game. He's a trombonist and leads a dance orchestra. I've written on this subject before; it's a real cultural pivot point. If I get the chance I will bring it up again in ONT. Really interesting period, just before I was born.

You can tell a lot about musicians' background and training by asking them to improvise in E flat.

You can tell a lot about musicians' background and training by asking them to improvise in E flat.

Reese Wynans was added as the keyboard player  to Double  Trouble  in the latter days. Stevie Ray Vaughn always tuned down a half-step to E-flat to get a fuller sound from his Strat,  as did bass player Tommy Shannon.

Reese was once asked how he transposed his solos on a  Hammond  B-3 since the pitch couldn't be adjusted as an electronic keyboard could. He replied,  "I play a lot of black keys."

Hey, Detroit burned to the ground in 1805. They used to have a great museum about that in the JL Hudson building, now removed of course. After the fire, they laid out a magnificent street plan, and kinda sorta looked down on DC and Gay Paree. Folk seem to forget that Detroit was a hell of a town before the automobile was invented, mostly getting rich by supplying the farms of the northern Lower Peninsula, which then all failed because of...climate change.

After the auto explosion, it became fashionable to look down on Detroit, long before the civil rights thing. Proper people did not approve of all those Polacks and hillbillies. Youse can look it up.

213 Mead is predictably wrong. He thought Altanta -- currently the scene of White voters in suburban counties desperate to get out of the Metro Atlanta area politically through independent counties/towns, was a model for the nation. Atlanta, with a sky-high murder rate, a metro area only 47% Black but 98% Black in public employees (City/County). Atlanta! There IS a war between Whites who have money and go to work every day, and Blacks and Latinos who don't have any and work intermittently for ultra-low wages if at all, and received massive direct and indirect subsidies from White taxpayers. Numbers USA has a pretty comprehensive breakdown of how immigrants, legal and illegal, stack up against native borns for welfare usage. This just in, that single mother (or even married) from Jalisco who speaks only three words of English and has no real skills and has six kids is being subsidized heavily by White guys who go to work in the morning. Ditto for Black "youth" in the ghetto. We have an expensive Welfare state that working White Americans have paid into their entire working life, that now serves Blacks/Mexicans and has not even money to serve them, let alone Whites. Result? Cyprus. That's the end point. Mead is disastrously wrong. Portland is not my cup of tea, but low-cost and high earning White guys whose idea of a wild night out is three cups of coffee at the local indie coffee house, can afford that green idiocy. If Ayn Rand and Mitt Romney ran Detroit, it would still be a hell-hole as long as it was filled with Black people who refused to change their behavior radically (stop having a 70%+ nationwide illegitimacy rate, or over 90% in the urban core, stop having violent flash mobs and drip-drip-drip crimes/assaults).
