DOOM: Like a tire fire, it's just got to burn itself out
— Monty

DOOOOM

You remember that IRS scandal that Democrats have been desperately hoping would go away? ItÂ’s not going away. ItÂ’s pretty clear at this point that Lois Lerner deliberately targeted Tea Party groups for extra scrutiny (read: harassment) to hinder the Tea Party groups from organizing and raising money. That this was done to aid Democrats is pretty obvious. Ms. Lerner has been on a paid vacation from the IRS ever since the scandal broke. So far no punishments have been meted out -- to Ms. Lerner or anyone else at the IRS involved in the scandal.

Larry Summers withdraws his name for the position of Fed chairman. Theory A: Summers anticipated the beating he was going to get during confirmation and wanted no part of it. Theory B: SummersÂ’ boss Obama anticipated the beating Summers was going to get during confirmation hearings and wanted no part of it. This means Yellen is probably a lock, though in truth sheÂ’s hardly a better pick than Summers on the merits.

Bad history, worse policy.

Missed by both sides was that the rush into housing signaled something seriously wrong with the economy (which this reviewer wrote about for National Review Online in 20061). A purchase of a house doesnÂ’t make one more productive, it doesnÂ’t lead to software or other commercial innovations that drive economic efficiency, nor does it open foreign markets. Housing on its best day is a consumptive sink of wealth, and when housing was all the rage in the earlier part of the new Millennium, the fact that it was made it apparent that consumption of housing was detracting from investment in the productive parts of the economy.

Keith Hennessey and Ed Lazear present some thoughts on the financial crisis of 2008.

The Democrat war on the young. Yet young people continue to vote Democrat by a large margin. It passeth all understanding.

The cost of the Great Recession? About $30 trillion...and counting.

Four of every ten college grads don’t need a degree for their work. But then, increasingly, college is just a four-year vacation in between high school and adulthood. It’s not really intended to impart any real knowledge or skills, unless you major in the hard sciences or engineering. It’s a place to have fun, drink a lot, have casual sex, and attend a lot of leftist indoctrination courses disguised as “women’s studies” or “African American studies” classes.

WhatÂ’s wrong with Kansas? Well, one of the things is that they have a huge unfunded pension liability. It's not just "blue" states, folks. It's most of them.

Greek unemployment now at 27.9%.

California plans to hike the minimum wage to $10 by 2016; will act shocked, shocked when unemployment subsequently spikes. And when off-the-books jobs (which donÂ’t generate income taxes and tend to employ off-the-books people) start to proliferate.

Yet another ObamaCare success story.

Italy damned nearly bailed on the Euro in 2011.

5 Funny story about Ms. Ronstadt: when she was scheduled to appear on Johnny Cash's TV show back in the early 70's, she showed up to the venue in a short skirt and no underwear. Mother Maybelle Carter noticed this and ordered her to go down to the local K-Mart and buy some "bloomers" before taping could commence. Mother Maybelle was having none of it.

No word on how Johnny felt about it. I think he was...conflicted.

(Got this from the DVD set of Johnny Cash's show, so it may be apocryphal.)

Have you seen the stats on finishing in four years?  It's about 40%.

More disturbing is that after six years, only about 60% have finished the degree.  The rest don't have the magic piece of paper (that they didn't need anyway) but still have the loans/still used up the grants.

Without reading the article, I'd opine that college gards do in fact need the degree for their work. Not in the sense of knowledge being used but becoz employers increasingly demand degrees as a requirement to get the job in the first place. Diploma Mills exist for that reason.

13 Re Obamacare success story:

As a freelancer and part-timer with a pre-existing condition, I was one of the first people enrolled in Obamacare about a year and a half ago.

A few months ago I was informed that I was no longer "in a network" and that if I wanted a provider, I'd should just randomly pick someone and hope they accepted the PCIP (pre-exisiting condition insurance plan.) You can imagine how well this went over.

Last week I got a letter informing me that hey, PCIP was ending on October 1 and I was now free to jump into the wonderful welcoming pool of state exchanges.  So basically I'm still not covered at all and have no idea how I'm going to get the coverage I never really had to begin with next.

15 The Federal Reserve's first mission under my guidance will be to ensure no employee holds a disproving opinion of gays and gay marriage. Every employee will be paired to participate in simulated gay wedding , complete with honeymoon, to prove their loyalty. Refusal will be grounds for termination and jail time for hate crimes. Execution will not be off the table. #2 on the agenda will be Muslim outreach. We will coordinate with NASA, of course.

...and I thought of all this during one morning's mayonnaise colonic. Just think of the things we can accomplish given time, comrades!

Only about 100,000 people were on the PCIP program.  But when it's applied to the entire population, it's going to be superawesome.

17 "Funny story about Ms. Ronstadt: when she was scheduled to appear on Johnny Cash's TV show back in the early 70's, she showed up to the venue in a short skirt and no underwear." ============================= In one of my first concert ticket expenditures ever, I bought a seat up front in a college gym to see Linda Ronstadt and Jackson Browne. She wore a yellow mini-dress , with underwear (I can attest). I offered to marry her on the spot, though I was just a little kid. Even though she can't wear that dress any more, can't sing any longer (Parkinson's sucks) and has a lefty streak three miles wide, I'd probably still marry her just for the sentimental memory of that concert.

66 I will keep on reminding y'all about one of Obamacare primary aims...to get their greedy little paws on the RESERVES held by health insurance companies--billions and billions of real money. Every insurance company is required to hold reserves equal to a payout if the worst case scenario for every subscriber. It must be liquid enough to pay ALL claims within 30 days. Figuring the reserves necessary for each subscriber is a complex formula which takes dozens of factors into account including flu season. We put aside an extra 600,000,000 when H1N1 was supposed to be so bad a couple of years ago. Insurance companies are allowed to invest this money, but, liquidity is key. So you do the math, all this lively money to be seized for single payer once the insurance companies are driven under. Oh and those exchanges, that was money not spent in delivering insurance benefits. Just another expensive mess. We budgeted 100,000,000 to build ours and it's going way over budget.

97 So, 4 of 10 grads don't need a degree for their work. Tell you what: 'twas ever thus. Big Gummint took over education, college first. You were raised to believe that going to college was going to get your nose up some crony-cap's ass. It was a long-running Public Service Ad that caused that.

Here's some chump reasoning: rich kids all go to college. Rich kids get good jobs. Ergo, if my kid goes to college, he'll be a rich kid too. And they sold you that. So, govt-friendly big corp's no longer had to run screening tests (they thought), and could skip most training. One of the economy's bigger cost-shifts, and look who ended up picking it up.

A university education is not supposed to be trade school. If you're a fuck-off, you can very easily turn four years when you're supposed to be learning what western culture is into a vacation. Rich kids can afford to. So what?

My "vacation" lasted six years. I had marketable skills before I started, and I worked full time (and played in a band) the whole time. Won a prestigious scholarship with a minimum stipend, scotching eligibility for the government loan-slavery programme. Net debt, zero. Didn't sleep much, deliberately lived poor, and now you would like to give me some shit about it? I'm not taking it.

So, higher education was co-opted by statists into the service of client corporations, before you ever got your decision made for you. Maybe before you were born -- it was 50 years ago. Very sad, but perhaps you chose badly. You may not belittle me for your failures.

98 Thr exchanges are hard for a number of reasons: 1) Exemptions, which affect your rate. For example: if you a are this or that type of person, you get subsidies and different rates. 2) Multilingual, we pay claims in something like 171 languages. I do not know how many languages the exchanges feature. 3) Calculating the applicant's rate for the various levels, etc. 4) Frankly--making it idiot proof enough that illerates and LIVs can use it. 5) Making the legal bits fluid enough to handle all the interactive parts if quoting insurance.

Anyone who has been paying attention should have lost all faith in gubmint long before Choom Boy was anointed.

Frankly, even in the days of Saint Reagan the system was out of control, totally self-serving and frighteningly inefficient. Ain't nothin' new in that regard; only the figurehead (RWR) was more confidence-inspiring.

What has changed is that government has transformed itself from nuisance to menace. Used to be, it hurt citizens through inefficiency and neglect. Now, it is malevolent.

101 A purchase of a house doesnÂ’t make one more productive, it doesnÂ’t lead to software or other commercial innovations that drive economic efficiency, nor does it open foreign markets. In times of prosperity (you young people may not recognize that word) housing does provide for employers a more stable workforce. One that isn't living on a year by year lease, looking to pack up and move, year after year. An experienced stable workforce *is* more productive then revolving door employment practices. But housing became 'tulipmania' and people bought for all the wrong reasons. Not because they were gainfully employed with a bright future, but because OMG did you see how much that house sold for? We can make a lot of money by buying a house and selling it six months later. OMG WTF BBQ!!! Let's buy!!! No money down! No credit checks, no employment verification! Housing appreciation became 'conventional wisdom'. Which sometimes is neither.

120 Four of every ten college grads donÂ’t need a degree for their work. I'm actually going to guess it's higher than that. I'm going to guess there are a lot of jobs that seem like (or just claim) a degree is required when, in fact, no degree is required. The last three jobs my wife had (last 5 for me) all claimed a Bachelor's degree was required. Neither of us graduated college and, yet, we got those jobs. Why? Because that degree doesn't mean anything. Even STEM jobs often don't require the rigor of a full 4-year degree. Yes, you'll go farther faster with one (assuming you didn't major in Wymyn's Studies or whatever), but often they aren't actually necessary.

122 And "spotted dick"-a pastry made with mutton fat? Uggh. But maybe it sounds worse than it actually is: From "Huffington Post": So, what is it, anyway? Spotted dick is a traditional British pudding made from suet, or mutton fat. The suet is mixed with other ingredients, such as baking soda, flour, molasses, corn syrup, or nutmeg. This creates a pastry dough, to which raisins or dry fruit are added, hence the dessert's "spots." The dough is traditionally either steamed or boiled, and is often served with a custard sauce. Etymology Why does such a commonplace, and even appetizing dessert have such a strange, unappetizing name? As mentioned, "spotted" refers to the currants, fruit or raisins in the pastry. "Dick" is messier to explain -- the word itself has a fuzzy history, and in the 19th century alone it was understood as an abbreviation for dictionary, a policeman, an apron, a riding wip, and, of course, male genitalia. Around the same time as these meanings were used, the first recorded spotted dick recipe was created. Etymology resources suggest that the "dick" in "spotted dick" could be "a corruption of the last syllable of pudding," "a corruption of 'dough'," or a reference to the German dick, meaning thick or viscous.

My SIL lives with us and should apply for disability. However, with three degrees she feels her "brilliance" can still help her keep a job. NOT.  She has been manic depressive since she was 15. She managed to keep a teaching job for over 10 years, but not without several "sabbaticals" after an episode. She is unmarried, 46.
When I meet people who claim the bipolar status and take no meds, I want to turn them in for cheating the system. Because there is no way they are like her. Not a snowball's chance in hell.

We enrolled her in the same program you were in here in NC. She is also going to be without come 10/1. As Bugs Bunny would say, "What a Mer-ah-gee." (mirage)

134 My eldest daughter wants to be a teacher Good luck to her. Not in a snarky way, but because the demographics don't look that good. I read recently of two major cities, Philadelphia and Chicago (there are more, but those are two quick examples) that have closed down scores of schools, releasing thousands of unemployed teacher into the supply. When the few slim openings occur, there is a huge supply of experienced teachers to pick and choose from. In times of prosperity (there's that word again) people have children, maybe marry, and five or six years later enroll them in schools. It's barely happening anymore. Schools that used to have two, three, or more kindergartens are down to one. Half full, at that. It's going to require a huge change in the thought process in this country before prosperity no longer is considered as objectionable as a four letter word.

140 Housing on its best day is a consumptive sink of wealth, and when housing was all the rage in the earlier part of the new Millennium, the fact that it was made it apparent that consumption of housing was detracting from investment in the productive parts of the economy. Sorry, I've gotta throw a flag on this one. Housing- whether single-family units or multi-family units- is an economic driver. As someone mentioned above, in good times it helps ensure a stable workforce. Beyond that, though, there are the ancillary industries which serve "Housing" and would, themselves, wither on the vine. No, having a house doesn't make me more thrifty or more productive (at least: no more productive than if I had an apartment). It doesn't produce software (on its own). Nevertheless, it frees up money for me to do other things. An apartment big enough to hold my family (including dogs) would cost me much more than my house payment, for instance. That freed-up money then goes right back into the economy in some other way. The problem was not "housing," the problem was the irrational push to get people who weren't ready to be homeowners (and might never have been ready) into houses anyway.

152 Nevergiveup @ 108 - It's been ~10+ years since I've been at SUBASE NLON. Did they finally tear down Building 1 on the Lower Base? It was falling apart back then. Posted by: butch at September 16, 2013 09:30 AM (0APJ3) Not sure. Being a Dentist I spent most of my time on the Upper Base except for getting my picture taken on the Lower Base and visiting a Sub

153 I walked in my living room yesterday afternoon and discovered my oldest watching a movie on the ABC "Family" channel. This movie was Pretty Woman-yes, the movie about a prostitute being redeemed from her life by rich, nice prostitute-hiring businessman who needed an escort for a "date" and falls in love. This. Was. On. The. ABC. FAMILY. Channel.

My theory is that, contra Plato, the forms of government do not entirely replace one another but instead merely layer onto one another. So, while 'democracy' replaces oligarchy on it's face, the oligarchs are still very much in control and allow the kabuki of democracy to go on as it provides much better security for themselves.

155 I remember Plato. I even had the Fuzzy Pumper Barber Shop.

Posted by: Bigby's Shadow Puppet Hands at September 16, 2013 09:36 AM (3ZtZW) I have always held that the "Strong Man" form of government, is the only kind that is natural to humans. It begins with our father, proceeds through the local Chieftan, and culminates with a King. What the founders did was to create a very unnatural form of government, (based on reason) and the adherents to the natural form of government have been trying to change it ever since.

159 Yellen is probably a lock, though in truth sheÂ’s hardly a better pick than Summers on the merits. In theory, Summers could do math and read the hand writing on the wall. Yellen probably wears Obama colored glasses...

160 At least Yellen has Fed experience. Summers does not.

But that's mostly by immigrants who are working off the books, so there's been no crackdown. How could they not know?? I quit one job because after about a month, my immigrant boss came in and handed me a bag of money instead of a paycheck, "so we don't have to pay taxes." Yeah, right. I'm in the IRS's headlights, dude. So I quit.

163 As a former AAG for the State of Kansas and victim of KPERS I can say with confidence that the problem existed before Sebby took office. The issue, and the article does not seem to mention it, is that teachers and school personnel for many years (decades) in Kansas did not have to contribute to KPERS and were guaranteed a payout on retirement. The contribution was to be made on their behalf by the state. Which of course, the state did not do, and thus, shortfall.
