It's been a long time since the last DOOM, my groovy babies. It's not due to any lack of DOOM to report, I assure you. It's just that my Kyrgyz prison cell did not have internet access. But now that I have escaped my unjust bondage, I am free once again to bring the DOOM train to your cities and towns, bearing a heavy load of bad economic news.
The AP catches a glimpse of the obvious: most people are out of work at one time or another in their lives. This falls under the heading "life is not fair". You show me somebody who never had to hustle to make the rent during a rough patch, and I'll show you a trust-fund baby who probably isn't worth a mousefart in a hurricane.
Then we have the sad saga of Detroit. We know what brought Detroit to this low state; what's more topical is what is going to happen to Detroit going forward. The city was built to house about twice the people it currently contains. Detroit faces a situation that no other major American city has had to face until now: how to shrink rather than grow. And Detroit may be only the first of many such cities -- not just in America, but all over the world -- that has to grapple with that problem. (Japan is facing the same grim problem in the years and decades to come.) Economic performance is predicated on growth, yet Detroit must spend a lot of money and effort to shrink in order to survive. Time will tell if this is even possible. I suspect that the answer will be...no.
Detroit's survival is not simply a matter of fixing a broken infrastructure. A community, above all, is the people who live in it. Detroit's most funamental problem is that it may not have the human capital to survive. Much of Detroit's potential workforce is simply unsuited for the kinds of jobs that would bring prosperity back to the city. The glib solution to this problem is "education and training", yet that is a process that must play out over decades; maybe generations. It's far too late for that kind of thing in Detroit. Even if it weren't too late, doing so would require efficient political and educational systems that Detroit does not have.
Detroit has been a bad joke for as long as I've been alive. As Adam Smith said about nations, Detroit had a lot of ruin in it. But not an infinite amount. Detroit was not killed by the impersonal forces of history or simple bad luck. The city was killed by the deliberate and forceful application of Democrat social planning theories.
Of course Democrats advocate more of the same medicine that poisoned Detroit in the first place. If we lived in a different age, I would be more hopeful that lessons would be learned and more useful approaches tried. But under the reign of His Majesty the King Barack Hussein Obama, the Imperial Will is all that matters: if His Majesty wishes to retain his status as savior of Detroit, he may make it known to his minions that the failure of Detroit would equal an insult to the Royal Person. The minions will raid the public treasury to prevent such an outrage. Celah.
Los Angeles may follow Detroit into bankruptcy absent Divine intervention, and for pretty much the same reasons.
China will not save us. They may not even be able to save themselves. China-boosters like Tom Friedman like to position China as the next world superpower, but I think the real truth is less dramatic: not a world with an alternate superpower, but a world with no superpower at all. As America's global reach diminishes, regional power-blocs will hold sway, just as they have always done. It may be that no other country can -- or even wants to -- take on the mantle of global hegemon. It's a pretty thankless job, after all.
The current unrest in Egypt has many facets, but one of the most important is Egypt's looming food shortage. The Egyptian military overthrew Morsi and the Muslim Brotherhood because they had mismanaged Egypt's finances so badly that there was no money left to buy international grain (or to subsidize its purchase by Egypt's millions of poor people). Daniel Goldman (via his nom de plume Spengler) wrote a piece on this a couple of years ago in the Asia Times:
Revolutions don't only kill their children. They kill a great many ordinary people. The 1921 famine after the Russian civil war killed an estimated five million people, and casualties on the same scale are quite possible in Egypt as well. Half of Egyptians live on $2 a day, and that $2 is about to collapse along with the national currency, and the result will be a catastrophe of, well, biblical proportions.
The IRS scandal? Still a thing, Democrat protestations to the contrary.
The public sector pension tsunami just keeps rolling inexorably on. The amount of total public-sector pension debt varies depending on the assumptions and expectations you use, but even the middle-of-the-road case is enough to make one blanch: shortages running into the trillions of dollars.
I've said for a long time that automation would eventually start to intrude even on menial labor jobs, and so it proves. The history of the Industrial Age is in part the history of machines taking over the tasks of farming from human beings. That process will continue to its logical endpoint. That has some pretty grim implications for workers on the very lowest rung of the employment latter (especially migrant farm laborers of both the legal and illegal variety). The good news, I guess, is that this development may solve the illegal-immigrant problem with no governmental action required.

You are looking at this all backwards. Obviously the solution to Detroit's problems is to double the population of Detroit. Of course, there we face the problem that there are some jobs that most Americans just won't do. Living in Detroit is one of those jobs.
The traditional response to that problem has been to import illegal immigrants from Mexico but that raises other problems. Hispanics, as we have seen in Southern California, particularly Compton, don't particularly like blacks and can be viewed in this context as an invasive species driving out a fragile native species. Even more important is that if enough Hispanics lived in Detroit they might be inclined to vote the entrenched black kleptocracy out of office and that can simply not be allowed to happen.
The answer is so obvious that we will kick ourselves for not seeing it sooner. We need to import a million illegal immigrants from Africa to populate Detroit. Obama's Aunt Zeituni should be a harbinger for saving America's cities, and more importantly, for saving the corrupt Democratic machines that govern those cities. Once Detroit's population is restored, we can apply this solution in America's other declining urban centers.
Posted by: Obnoxious A-hole at July 29, 2013 04:38 AM (31Nrp)
No other city has ever succeded or even tried to educate or train their unemployable minorities. Urban renewal is simply a matter of pricing the trash out and moving young, wanna-be-hip people in.
Offering buyouts and relocation bonuses could help. Take advantage of Kelo while it's still constitutional to seize prime areas while setting up "reservations" where stubborn residents can be placed.

I can't find the article now (it may not be on the intertubes), but more than a decade ago McDonald's had a fully automated kiosk operating in a few airports overseas. There was a limited menu, of course, but the system could deliver a standard burger-and-fries meal (freshly-cooked) with no human hands involved.
As you say, I think the reason they never pushed the idea was because it wasn't cost-effective with low-wage human workers. That could change if the minimum wage is raised significantly. I have no doubt that McDonald's has the technology to switch to more automated restaurants pretty quickly if they find it cost-effective to do so. (This goes for most other large fast-food chains.)

Not really. There's a huge component that's simply grass roots "chaos capitalism" the PRC government has little interest in "controlling" other than to extract taxes from. Civil engineering and other large projects, and government run factories excepted of course.
For the most part the chaos capitalism is allowed to run free as long as it doesn't cause the government international problems (ex. software/media piracy). They understand well that international penetration of the China "brand" is something worth not inhibiting.

WMT is working on preloaded restock carts and racks that would be loaded at the distribution centers based on the product location in any particular store and position on the specific shelves.
The preloaded racks would be staged on the truck in optimal extraction order and rolled straight off the truck to the isle where the product gets restocked.

Examples included answering and talking on a cell phone during an interview, showing up for an interview wearing inappropriate clothing such as sweats or short shorts, prominent and uncovered offensive tattoos (Miss Marple finds almost all tattoos offensive, but I digress), and undiplomatic comments such as "How much vacation time do I get?" asked right off the bat.
These were often COLLEGE GRADUATES. I would guess they also do not have a work ethic nor will they show up on time.

The UPS systems require a tight load built from random sized and weighted packages. It would require a 3D analysis of the package, the ability to manipulate it within a trailer, and the speed to keep up with the unloaders at the beginning of the process.
Not a trivial problem, but eventually it will happen.

Five-six years ago I noticed WMT was hiring mostly younger people. These days I'm seeing a lot more older faces among the staff when I shop.
The older ones do actually show up, don't come equipped with a cell phone grafted to their skull, don't show up wasted from a night of partying, and have better ability to figure out the little efficiency tricks to get the job done on time.
I once witnessed a store manager in a heated argument with a young employee confiscate their cell phone for the rest of the shift. The kid just couldn't understand why he couldn't jabber on the cell phone for hours each night and repeatedly not get his aisle restocking completed.

There was a discussion on local radio the other day about the "soft skills" (don't know where that term came from) that so many young people are lacking.
One of our local career and tech ed centers makes "soft skills" a required part of the curriculum for their students. Hard skills are things like how to install brakes, or how to frame a house, or how to take someone's pulse. The soft skills are the employability skills: ability to work with others; good conduct and attitude; ability to accept feedback and use it to improve performance; work ethic; and work readiness. The hard skills each student learns from semester to semester change as the student progresses through the program, but the soft skills are incorporated into each student's marks every semester. It's really a great program.

We just installed a new toilet, which admittedly is one of the best low-flows I have seen. But it still isn't great.
The fix is pretty simple. The flapper is a sphere with two holes in it, so it fills with water and quickly closes off the outflow. Just decreasing the size of the holes will increase the time before the outflow closes.
Easy, cheap, and oh-so-satisfying!

cost to demolish a home in Detroit runs around $8000 to $10,000 dollars (http://tinyurl.com/odzvtky). There are according to some estimates about 50,000 abandoned and vacant homes in Detroit.
Detroit should offer up these abandoned buildings for Demolition Derbies or somesuch. But instead of cars ramming into each other, you'd have cars and trucks and farm equipment ramming into empty buildings.

Even getting rid of the thousands of abandoned houses in Detroit won't be simple, or cheap. The cost to demolish a home in Detroit runs around $8000 to $10,000 dollars (http://tinyurl.com/odzvtky). There are according to some estimates about 50,000 abandoned and vacant homes in Detroit. That translates into half a billion dollars, more or less, just to tear down all the blight. And that doesn't include any of the funds needed to rebuild or repurpose the sites.

As America's global reach diminishes, regional power-blocs will hold sway, just as they have always done. It may be that no other country can -- or even wants to -- take on the mantle of global hegemon. It's a pretty thankless job, after all.
We specialize in region-by-region domination. After all, we subsumed most of Genghis Khan's offspring.

I dunno what Monty means by "hustle to make rent" but it's about as bad as it's been for the wife and I, and yet we're not in dire straits.
Sure we've slashed costs everywhere, and we're tapping into savings to get through.
Ah, but that's the key isn't it. Savings.
How you ask? Well, time's weren't lean we put away $800/month in case of personal DOOM. Also we spent 2.5 years in an apartment that was well under what we could afford. (And prior to that while she was away at Grad school, I lived with my parents and worked two jobs to make sure we had some capital.)
If this country had more savings, DOOM would be less scary.

Uh... good? I guess? Though one must ask, isn't rape in general something to be opposed?
Certainly in the West that's the view. Unfortunately it's a rather recent one. For much of history the opinion was that rape was simply part of the "spoils of war". In many parts of the world that's still the case. Additionally, some armies not only tolerate it but actually encourage it as both a means of humiliating their opponents as well as trying to "breed out" their enemies.

"Old brick" - salable
"weathered board" - salable and chic in some markets
"5/4 T-and-G old growth flooring" - remachinable and very expensive.
Of course old door knobs and any stained glass panes still intact will fetch premium prices.

Oh yes, I know. My point is simply that "rape in war" is a particularly disgusting subset of "rape" in general. My particular opinion of all rapists is they should all be raped themselves, multiple times over, and then stabbed through the soft palate with a rusty corkscrew and left for the buzzards.

Detroit could drop that demolition cost to $0.00 by selling salvage rights for $10 or something like that.
I suppose any and all copper has already been stripped from most of these properties, else that would fetch a tidy sum, too.
Another Drudge headline (other than the laughable Obamacare one):
Detroit weighs garage sale of assets...
What assets? What exactly does Detroit have that's worth anything at this point? Didn't they already sell off their art?
And here's a question: if Detroit is going through bankruptcy, how can they still be on the hook for that new arena? Wouldn't any money set aside for that project be used to pay down debt owed to creditors?

Posted by: CharlieBrown'sDildo at July 29, 2013 05:20 AM (gqgiP)
Regarding McD's.
As far as break even goes, I can tell you this, Labor wasn't allowed to go above I think was 30-40% gross sales in any hour and they were fairly rigorous about that with rare exceptions (Labor my spike just before lunch rush as your employees come in and prep). A thousand dollar hour is considered good for a lunch rush at a "normal" store (i.e. one that's not located near some enhancing factor like a highway or a ballpark) So if you take a wage from $7.50-$15, you pretty much instantly have to reduce half your staff. And it's not that hard.
Our McD's usually had 10-15 people to run full tilt (we never achieved actual capacity). But you could do it with as little as 6-8 and your times wouldn't suffer as much as you think.
I can't speak to what they can or can't automate other than to say, I suspect human interaction helps them.
Also when something goes wrong, you need at least one human there to fix it.
Having said that, they tried some crazy things back in the day when I worked there: Drive though windows that actually dialed call centers rather than in restaurant workers for example.
The thing was though, there's just enough chaos in fast food that made the automation hard. (Which is why they abandoned the centralized drive though ordering.) I'm not saying it's not possible I'm just saying we're still at a point where it's not necessary. Based on my 2005 final wage, I'd say that cut off point is about $9/hour (for a good employee) anything above that and they'll seriously consider cranking up the automation.

Setting aside the city buildings (which Detroit actually owns.)
They also own the art museum, and the art in it.
Which includes (among other things) Van Gough's self portrait. I heard $200mil being tossed around, dunno if that's total art value of just the Van Gough.
How the hell a city ended up with ownership of a priceless (or at least hugely priced) piece of art, I have no fucking clue. St. Louis has a large Zoo, and decent sized art museum, but they're run by private non-profits to avoid this type of problem.

The problem with selling the buildings is you're then on the hook for the property taxes. Ixnay.
And I wasn't sure if they'd sold the art already or not; I know I'd heard that talked about last week. I've got about $0.85 to spare, so I'd be willing to grab anything from the clearance bin. Normally I'd expect to pay more, but any artwork owned by the City of Detroit is permanently marred by having been owned by the City of Detroit, and therefore should be offered at a steep discount.

"I meant: what is the minimum wage that would allow MacDonalds to switch to automated production without financial penalty?"
Automation follows the laws of diminishing returns. The first dollars spent on the easiest and most obvious procedures gives the best return, but as the tasks become more varied, the costs escalate exponentially.
For some things, its less expensive to train a chimpanzee than try to build a robot to do the same thing.

You'd think that, but McD's would likely have to radically simplify their menu for that to happen and/or change their entire pricing structure.
Hell, I can come up with 6 different combinations for a Big Mac Meal off the top of my head (and I'm not talking about changing the actual food, just ordering combinations.)
Wait, 10.
Plus another 5 that people have tried to order (and make a certain level of sense) but aren't valid "combinations" (because if they were, it'd cut into McD's margins.)
It's even worse for breakfast.
Take an Egg McMuffin meal. If memory serves, possible drink combinations include: Orange Juice, Coffee, soda (and shake, but only because shake was always possible).
Milk, not a possible combination, margins weren't high enough. (The latte's didn't exist then, so I dunno about those.)
I'm not saying the job is hard, but it does require a bit of training in it's current state.

From a senior member of the Loyal Order of the Terminally Boned, Chicago (via the Sun-Times - http://bit.ly/18II28W):
- In 2012, the unallocated cash on hand fell from $167 million to $33 million...because of the introduction of "honest" accounting.
- Had Chicago fully-funded its employee pension plans last year, the total fund balance of $231 million and the "leased asset reserves" (I believe that's the remaining proceeds from the leasing of the Skyway and parking meters) of $625 million would have been completely wiped out.
- The long-term debt load has nearly hit $29 billion, $10,780 for every man, woman, and child in Chicago.

That suggests that fast food places ought to be developing apps so that people can order with their smart phones. Obviously, security is going to be a really important part of the system and obviously, not everybody is going to choose to do this instantly, but it is the sort of thing that can be phased in and the bugs worked out with a small group of early adopters and eventually be the normal way that people get their food at drive up windows. The normal McDonalds crew might be 3 to 5 people tending the machines and handling problems.

Too much local chaos at the local store.
The results were mixed because I'm on the ground at the local store so I can quickly handle any funkiness that arises. A call center can't.
Also your order taker usually doubles as your money taker too, so it didn't really save any resources. (And if you have a dedicated order take they'll usually dishwash with downtime or they're running for the "presenter" (the guy who hands the food out the window.)
The automated drink machine was often a disaster BTW. I constantly broke, crushed cups, underpoured, or various other things.

True, but there are only 50 soda combinations in that coke machine.
And the margins on them are all roughly equal.
Want to fuck up McD's day really quickly? Order a double Cheeseburger meal, Add Mayo and Tomatoes, replace the soda with 2 milks.
The rough price of the meal itself is more or less the same, but you just tanked the margins. (Which is why an employee is there to try to steer you away from some of those things, or enforce various rules. Often those rules are simple like: If a customer is obviously trying to turn a lower priced sandwich into an exact equivalent of a higher priced one, you sell them the higher priced one. Also soda's are replaceable with milks.)

I do get the idea in principle, but having run a McD's register before, the sheer amount of choices is somewhat staggering. And as I said, there was no hard stop for "yeah we see you're trying to create a Big Mac there, No." That was all done by the human.
And you give the average customer far to much credit. Lots of my customers had trouble ordering with prompts from me, I can't imagine how it'd go with them on their own.
Plus, never underestimate the power of suggestion. It's a huge part of the McD's business model, and it works best with a human doing it. (That and McD's numbers seemed to show at least then that people responded better to having a person greet them.)
McD's could tell me how my sales would adjust when a Dairy Queen opened a mile down the road, they already knew. I'm fairly certain if kiosk ordering made sense in the big picture they'd do it.

The tragedy is there is no reason you cannot have a renewed and streamlined Detroit except: outrageous wage demands, lack of willingness to adapt to an altered economic landscape, political graft and subtrefuge, inflexibility and greed on the part of PEUs, functional crippling cultural rot, out of control regulatory fiat, and an unwillingness to use eminent domain to allow the scavenging of sun resources and fallow land...in sum "Democrats."

(Even better if "Calibonya" has to bend over and do da perp walk with "Bath House Jerry" at the helm........
Still, even with ALL the red meat....the Repubican's may still find a way to put the enema tube up their own asses in the end...(HEY double oun tonte )

Hear me, lefty whiners.
