They really need to get someone like Jason Statham as the Dr. Someone who can bring some character. Ralph Brown could work, likewise. Someone who isn't like 12 years old. Some of the classic doctors were pretty young when they started, but the good ones seemed a lot older than they were.

When did that happen? The killing thing, I mean? Which doctor? Haven't seen much since Sylvester McCoy and never caught the Paul McGann one, though I wouldn't mind seeing that as McGann seems like he'd be a good doctor. Are they talking about just back to Eccleston? In any event, I wonder if they've gotten a lot of feedback about the demand for a more mature doctor?

Tonight I'm gonna watch the Doctor Who movie that aired on FOX back in '96, I think. It's available on Dailymotion.

btw, for those who are unaware, they made a short that bridges the gap between the 8th Doctor Paul McGann (from the tv movie mentioned above) and the so-called War Doctor that appears in The Day Of The Doctor.

65 >>>Is that new info? no they made up that rule very early, maybe for the Pertwee regeneration. They didn't really plan on the show being on fifty years later. But other Timelords have evaded the limit. I think the Master went past 13. And anyway, the Doctor has done so much and had so much happen to him (for example, he got River Song's "regeneration energy") that it's easy to ignore. The thing is, they keep ignoring this rule. The Doctor never mentions it. No one is going to cry foul if they break the rule, but I think Doctor Who geeks do want the acknowledgement that the rule is now being broken, with an explanation, whatever it is.

anyone else disappointed that he saved galiphrane? It made the adolescent behavior ok. He had shown that he could be a burn it to the ground warrior if he had no option, and that's he had faced it before. Now he feels like an unserious clown who always magics his way out.

No. It was clearly stated back during the tail end of Tom Baker's run that time lords only had 12 regenerations. The Master had used up his 12. It was also established that they could go past 12 if they stole other people's bodies.

72 Limited to 13 generations?

That goes back to the old series. To summarize lengthy discussions, it may be more of a social limit than biological, and the Master found ways around it so the Doctor probably will, too (there have been indications of regenerations not named 'the Doctor' aside from John Hurt).

73 >>>Now he feels like an unserious clown who always magics his way out. that is... what he always is. I guess the Gallifrey incident was an exception, now gone. In smaller episodes, those not involving the Destruction of All Time and Space, they do allow people to die, thankfully. In these big episodes it's always Magic Button Time.

2. Are you surprised that the Face of Bow has not been brought up in a long while? I am. I thought they'd milk that idea. I think it did come up during the "Bad Wolf" thing, though.

107 105 What was up with that one doctor was actually true and regenerate but kept his old self schtick.

At least the new regenerations were consistent with past canon...

They were talking about Tenant, and when he did the regeneration but shoved the energy off into his severed hand.

108 8/10

There were plot holes, of course, along with half explanations, a gratuitous last moment cameo (which, while appreciated, was a bit much), too many monsters (this should have been a two-parter), and expectations that were so far off of the scale that there was NO WAY that the Moff could have met them with the same level of energy that he put out with those from The Day of the Doctor.

Having said all that, there was far more good than bad in The Time of the Doctor. The two main speeches from the Doctor were well delivered, and Matt Smith was good as always. Jenna Coleman was also great, and the guest cast did their jobs well. Hearing the old themes from the Smith era played out one final time hit the heart strings all too well.

And now we have Peter Capaldi, new kidneys and all. He has some big shoes to fill, but I suspect that he is more than up to the task to get the job done, and done rather well.

I wonder what would happen if the next Doctor were to be properly Nolanized, that is, made very dark and spooky like the recent incarnation of Batman? Would that make him more like the First Doctor, more like the Sixth Doctor, or perhaps something entirely new? Fingers crossed, I hope that Showrunner Moffatt remembers what it was that made his better episodes damn good ones, and writes them more consistently.

Bye bye bow tie, fish fingers and custard, and the absolute hard limit of 12 regenerations. Where we are going, we won't need roads..

109 No to worry, new episodes will be here in September for 8 weeks.

Pfft, all Moffatt care about is how can he stick in more Gay Lesbian and Transgender references into the show.

116 Baker could communicate so much with just a little shift in the tone of his voice: humor, command, awe, irony, intrigue...  Tennant has the same large palette.  Both of them can generate shades of meaning Smith never did.

Smith had two speeds: smiling and yelling.

121 Also, that last Smith episode seemed slapdash.  I wasn't clear on who was in space and exactly why.  And the people in that town were being shot at for 300 years?  There's just one little town on that planet?  How were the local townsfolk fighting off the bad guys?  And when the bad guys got into town, were they shooting at one another or just the townsfolk?  And did the narrator say that the Doctor was fighting "back-to-back" with the Silence?  Why?  And did the Daleks defeat all the other races in space during that 300 years?  They were fighting each other to be the one to fight the Doctor?

Can we have the John Hurt years yet?

Posted by: otho at December 25, 2013 07:36 PM (9gNQd)

123 I just assume each of the invasions over the 300 years (+ what 300 more-they didn't say but he got quite old) was handled the way he would have if the event had gotten its own episode-and since we've seen the Doctor thwart all those folks many times, the montage covered it.

As for who was in space, it was all the Doctor's enemies, like in The Pandorica Opens (two part finale of Smith's first season), though it was a little sloppy of the writers to just assume we'd get the reference.

125 Just home from long Christmas journeys, will catch the re-run in a few minutes. I don't consider the Matt Smith Doctor canonical. The first nine Doctors existed to provide Doctor lore for the One True Doctor to draw on. Tenant actual acts as if the fated of worlds that depend on him matter, and he brings the breezy charming. The main thing is that the man can seriously act. I have great hope for Capaldi, but No. 2 Son (who is 17 and has infinite time to obsess over this) says that Moffat is as much the source of the show's decline as the mincing Matt Smith, and Moffat is still going to be showrunner.

Yeah its Moffat that is the one obsessed with always having "Doctor Who" said in the episodes.  I mean how often was it said before he started?  I have never watched older episodes but it doesn't seem like something that is ever done.  I can't think it ever being asked during the Ninth Doctor's season.  And I think in all of Tenant's run it was said one time.  For Smith it seems like they wanted it said every other episode, and then the obsession with his real name.

129 I'm switching back and forth between this and sharks eating people. I just don't care. You haven't earned the effort to follow the plot. Something will happen with the rift and Capaldi will show up. I want to see that.

Sounds like John Nathan Turner. He can be attributed at least some of the blame for the decline in the 80's. There was a return to something good with Sylvester McCoy, but it wasn't enough. The loss of the great 60's and 70's runs can be traced in part to Turner. There was a last great surge in 78? to 80? with Douglas Adams, but it declined pretty sharply after that. The McCoy years were decent though. Very patchy, but when it was "on", it was good.

132 I obviously need to go back and watch some of the series before Eccleston. I was very sad to see him go (he was my first Doctor), but really liked Tennant after I got used to the idea that they love you and leave you. Hated to see him leave, but got to love Smith and have been sniffly since I saw the episode earlier on BBC iPlayer. Tennant can seriously act. I thought Human Nature/The Family of Blood in Series 3 was tremendous. Series 1-6 is available for streaming on Netflix, series 7 can be bought for streaming on Amazon for not too much. I watched them all in a few months, but not paying close attention. Have gone back and watched them more carefully to sort out all of the timelines and old references - it helped a lot. I bought a TARDIS Christmas ornament for my tree this year, but so far have not bought a fez. It would be difficult to wait for Who to return, except that Sherlock is about to start again. Sherlock mini-episode was released a couple days ago: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JwntNANJCOE

I am now the property of a kitten named Clara Christmas.

BTW: Ginger or Clara?
