A lot of crying...someone will die, but not really, and everything will be okay if everyone 'believes' in the Doctor!

Christopher Eccleston was a good Doctor, and I'm not just saying it to be kitchy. Eccleston was an 'adult' in the role, not a moody young prick.

They really need to get someone like Jason Statham as the Dr. Someone who can bring some character. Ralph Brown could work, likewise. Someone who isn't like 12 years old. Some of the classic doctors were pretty young when they started, but the good ones seemed a lot older than they were.

You really should start with the ~700 episodes going back to 1963.

It's also suggested that they've now confronted that, and also set it right, so that would permit a more older-acting doctor.
Posted by: ace at December 25, 2013 09:28 PM
When did that happen? The killing thing, I mean? Which doctor? Haven't seen much since Sylvester McCoy and never caught the Paul McGann one, though I wouldn't mind seeing that as McGann seems like he'd be a good doctor. Are they talking about just back to Eccleston? In any event, I wonder if they've gotten a lot of feedback about the demand for a more mature doctor?
Posted by: otho at December 25, 2013 05:39 PM (9gNQd)
Tonight I'm gonna watch the Doctor Who movie that aired on FOX back in '96, I think. It's available on Dailymotion.
btw, for those who are unaware, they made a short that bridges the gap between the 8th Doctor Paul McGann (from the tv movie mentioned above) and the so-called War Doctor that appears in The Day Of The Doctor.

Possible spoiler if you missed the last episode:
anyone else disappointed that he saved galiphrane? It made the adolescent behavior ok. He had shown that he could be a burn it to the ground warrior if he had no option, and that's he had faced it before. Now he feels like an unserious clown who always magics his way out.

Is that new info?
Posted by: weft cut-loop at December 25, 2013 09:37 PM
No. It was clearly stated back during the tail end of Tom Baker's run that time lords only had 12 regenerations. The Master had used up his 12. It was also established that they could go past 12 if they stole other people's bodies.
Posted by: otho at December 25, 2013 05:43 PM (9gNQd)
Is that new info?
That goes back to the old series. To summarize lengthy discussions, it may be more of a social limit than biological, and the Master found ways around it so the Doctor probably will, too (there have been indications of regenerations not named 'the Doctor' aside from John Hurt).

1. How do you all feel about that Face Of Bow stuff? I didn't like it. But I did find exploring Earth in its final days thousands of years from now interesting.
2. Are you surprised that the Face of Bow has not been brought up in a long while? I am. I thought they'd milk that idea. I think it did come up during the "Bad Wolf" thing, though.

To stop the Timelord/Dalek War from killing everything, he destroyed all the Daleks (something he's only slightly guilty about) and all the Timelords (something that causes him more pain).
This was never shown, except in small flashbacks during Day of the Doctor, but has been referred to a lot during the New Who era.

At least the Azgarn (sp?) in Stargate SG-1 had a more plausible reason for extinction.

Plausible enough that the time lords sent Tom Baker's Doctor on a mission to abort the entire species.

They were talking about Tenant, and when he did the regeneration but shoved the energy off into his severed hand.
Posted by: buzzion at December 25, 2013 06:39 PM (LI48c)
There were plot holes, of course, along with half explanations, a gratuitous last moment cameo (which, while appreciated, was a bit much), too many monsters (this should have been a two-parter), and expectations that were so far off of the scale that there was NO WAY that the Moff could have met them with the same level of energy that he put out with those from The Day of the Doctor.
Having said all that, there was far more good than bad in The Time of the Doctor. The two main speeches from the Doctor were well delivered, and Matt Smith was good as always. Jenna Coleman was also great, and the guest cast did their jobs well. Hearing the old themes from the Smith era played out one final time hit the heart strings all too well.
And now we have Peter Capaldi, new kidneys and all. He has some big shoes to fill, but I suspect that he is more than up to the task to get the job done, and done rather well.
I wonder what would happen if the next Doctor were to be properly Nolanized, that is, made very dark and spooky like the recent incarnation of Batman? Would that make him more like the First Doctor, more like the Sixth Doctor, or perhaps something entirely new? Fingers crossed, I hope that Showrunner Moffatt remembers what it was that made his better episodes damn good ones, and writes them more consistently.
Bye bye bow tie, fish fingers and custard, and the absolute hard limit of 12 regenerations. Where we are going, we won't need roads..

Pfft, all Moffatt care about is how can he stick in more Gay Lesbian and Transgender references into the show.

As for who was in space, it was all the Doctor's enemies, like in The Pandorica Opens (two part finale of Smith's first season), though it was a little sloppy of the writers to just assume we'd get the reference.

I have great hope for Capaldi, but No. 2 Son (who is 17 and has infinite time to obsess over this) says that Moffat is as much the source of the show's decline as the mincing Matt Smith, and Moffat is still going to be showrunner.
Posted by: Frumious Bandersnatch at December 26, 2013 12:03 AM (1xUj/)
Yeah its Moffat that is the one obsessed with always having "Doctor Who" said in the episodes. I mean how often was it said before he started? I have never watched older episodes but it doesn't seem like something that is ever done. I can't think it ever being asked during the Ninth Doctor's season. And I think in all of Tenant's run it was said one time. For Smith it seems like they wanted it said every other episode, and then the obsession with his real name.

I don't consider the Matt Smith Doctor canonical. The first nine Doctors existed to provide Doctor lore for the One True Doctor to draw on. Tenant actual acts as if the fated of worlds that depend on him matter, and he brings the breezy charming. The main thing is that the man can seriously act.

Sounds like John Nathan Turner. He can be attributed at least some of the blame for the decline in the 80's. There was a return to something good with Sylvester McCoy, but it wasn't enough. The loss of the great 60's and 70's runs can be traced in part to Turner. There was a last great surge in 78? to 80? with Douglas Adams, but it declined pretty sharply after that. The McCoy years were decent though. Very patchy, but when it was "on", it was good.
